Abstract:Rational molecular design of π-conjugated donor polymers is critical for developing high-performance organic solar cells. Currently, random copolymerization strategy is considered as a facile method to synergistically fine-tune the light absorption, HOMO/LUMO energy levels, charge mobility, and solubility of donor (D)-acceptor (A) copolymers. Here, we design such D 2 -D 1 -A structured random terpolymers PF8BDTBT that comprise a planar and electron-rich unit of benzo[1,2-b:4.5-b']dithiophene (D 1 , BDT), flanked by an electron-rich 9,9-dioctylfluorene (D 2 , F8) and an electron-deficient benzothiadiazole (A, BT). Among them, the composition ratio of F8/BT moieties is varies while maintaining the BDT unit as a π-bridge unit to faciliate molecular packing. As a result, optical properties of PF8BDTBT can be readily modulated; for instance, an increase of BT ratio leads to enhanced absorption between 500 and 750nm and narrower optical bandgap, while higher F8 contents results in stronger absorption in the range of 350-500nm and a deeper HOMO energy level. Grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering patterns of PF8BDTBT thin films reveal a strong tendency of π-stacking with increasing BT ratio, which is retained in PF8BDTBT:PCBM blends. Moreover, all terpolymer blend films show a fine phase-separation morphology which is beneficial to exciton dissociation and charge transport. Finally, the optimal terpolymer PF8BDTBT12 (F8:BDT:BT = 0.33:1:0.67 mol%) exhibits broad yet intense optical absorption, matched energy levels with PCBM and favorable π-π stacking. The corresponding additive-free inverted photovoltaic cells yield the best efficiency of 4.26% with an impressive open-circuit voltage close to 1 V.
