Abstract:Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is widely used as a nondestructive tree root testing tool due to its convenience. The accurate and efficient inversion of complex underground root permittivity distribution using GPR data is a key factor in effectively identifying root systems. In this study, we propose a multipath permittivity inversion network (MPPINet). MPPINet utilizes multipaths to extract efficacious feature information from B-scan images and improves the utilization efficiency by fusing different trajectories, which enables accurate inversion of the permittivity distribution of the tree root system. We applied MPPINet to reconstruct the permittivity maps of underground tree root distribution in different scenarios. Simulation experiments validated the accuracy and the reliability of MPPINet in inverting underground tree root distribution permittivity. For the case of limited data volume, MPPINet shows better generalization performance and adaptability to multitarget scenarios of root systems in complex underground environments, and the inversion results are better than other end-to-end inversion networks such as U-Net, PINet, and GPRInvNet. We conduct preburied root experiments and actual root-digging experiments to validate the method's feasibility under factual conditions. The experimental results confirm that MPPINet still maintains good generalization in multitarget recognition detection of real-world complex underground root systems, which can assure further research to realize 3-D scanning imaging of underground root systems.
