Abstract:The transition towards sustainable energy sources has ushered in the era of electrofuels or synthetic fuels (e-fuels), which are produced/synthesised with electricity from renewable sources, water, and CO2, and are a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. This paper presents a systematic review of the techno-economic (TEA) and life cycle assessments (LCA) pertaining to e-fuel production. We critically evaluate the advancements in production technologies, economic feasibility, environmental implications, and potential societal impacts. Our findings indicate that while e-fuels offer a promising solution to reduce carbon emissions, their economic viability remains contingent on the optimization of production processes and the cost of input materials. The LCA underlines the importance of sourcing renewable energy for hydrogen production to ensure genuine sustainability of e-fuels. The review further identifies knowledge gaps, recommending areas for future research and policy intervention for e-fuels. As the world steers towards a greener future, understanding the holistic implications of e-fuels becomes paramount, and this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview to guide stakeholders in their decision-making processes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to systematically review the techno-economic assessment (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) of electronic fuels (e-fuels) to comprehensively understand the economic feasibility and environmental impact of their production processes. Specifically: 1. **Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA)**: - Evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different production pathways, including catalytic deoxygenation, hydrothermal gasification, direct air capture (DAC), and power-to-liquid (PtL) methods. - Identify cost reduction strategies and technological optimization schemes to improve the economic feasibility of e-fuels. 2. **Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)**: - Assess the environmental impact of e-fuels throughout their entire life cycle, from raw material acquisition to end-of-life, particularly focusing on carbon footprint and other environmental factors. - Ensure that e-fuels have genuine sustainability in practical applications. 3. **Comprehensive Analysis**: - Combine TEA and LCA to provide a holistic perspective covering the economic feasibility, cost structure, and environmental impact of e-fuels. - Identify knowledge gaps and propose future research directions and policy recommendations. Through these systematic assessments, the paper aims to provide decision-makers, industry practitioners, and researchers with a multifaceted understanding and guidance on the development of e-fuels, promoting their application in the sustainable energy transition.
