Abstract:The blood flow patterns within the left atrium (LA) and left atrial appendage (LAA) are crucial for diagnosing and treating thrombosis and stroke. Although computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become a primary tool for studying hemodynamics, its complex operations and high computational costs limit its application for rapid clinical diagnosis in patient-specific cases. To address this challenge, we introduce LAFlowNet (LA: left atrium, net: network), a neural network utilizing point cloud data from the LA/LAA to rapidly predict instantaneous and mean velocity and pressure fields. The novelty of the proposed network lies in integrating edge convolutional layers with PointNet to capture local geometric details and utilizing dual-channel to fuse global and local geometric features. Evaluated using the Normalized Mean Absolute Error (NMAE) metric, LAFlowNet achieves an accuracy of over 90% for instantaneous flow field prediction and over 80% for mean flow field prediction. It outperforms several classical neural networks and demonstrates an inference speed over 300 times faster than CFD. Furthermore, the potential enhancement of the current stroke risk stratification system through the inclusion of mean left atrial pressure (mLAP) and mean left atrial velocity (mLAV) is explored. This is the first work to apply deep learning to calculate the flow field inside LA/LAA, contributing to real-time LA/LAA flow field analysis and advancing the existing stroke risk stratification system.
