Abstract:Pristine graphene is a desirable candidate to improve the pavement performances of modified asphalt due to its superior two-dimensional (2D) nano properties. However, the influences of defects unavoidably existing in pristine graphene nanosheet on the reinforcing effect of modified asphalt remain unclear. Herein, the singlevacancy defect and Stone-Wales defect on the interfacial interactions between pristine graphene and asphalt molecules are comprehensively explored by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the first time. MD simulations show that the graphene with single vacancy defect or StoneWales defect can selectively adsorb polar and non-polar molecules in asphalt to enhance the densification of pristine graphene modified asphalt, thus improving the mechanical properties of them. DFT calculations further reveal that defects produce localized polarization of electrostatic potential by altering the charge distribution of pristine graphene, which endows pristine graphene with a unique amphipathic property in asphalt matrix via a new dipole - dipole interactions, thus enhancing thermodynamic stability of the original colloidal structures of asphalt. This in-depth understanding of defective graphene modified asphalt on aromatic scale provides a new insight on the selection of graphene-based modifier to design durable asphalt pavement materials.
