Abstract:This study investigates the optical properties of ion-bombarded Au-SiO2 nanocomposites, focusing on the enhanced Fano resonance observed in these samples. The formation of nanocrystals and nanocavities due to ion bombardment leads to significant interactions between plasmonic and vibrational modes, resulting in pronounced Fano resonance in the strong coupling regime. The study aims to explain the closer spacing of modes, the elevated baseline absorbance, and the asymmetric lineshape observed in the ion-bombarded samples. A detailed analysis is provided, comparing these findings with other sample preparations, such as Au-coated SiO2 and 20 nm Au colloidal on SiO2. The implications of these results for understanding plasmonic behavior and their potential applications in nanophotonics are discussed

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly discusses the enhanced Fano resonance phenomenon observed in ion bombarded Au-SiO2 nanocomposites. The focus of the study is to understand how the formation of nanocrystals and nanocavities due to ion bombardment significantly affects the interaction between plasmons and vibrational modes, leading to strong Fano resonance. By comparing samples with Au-coated SiO2 and 20nm Au colloids on SiO2, the authors analyze the reasons for the decrease in mode spacing, increased baseline absorption, and asymmetric line shapes. These findings are of significant importance for understanding the behavior of plasmons and their potential applications in nanophotonics, such as the development of highly sensitive sensors and novel optical devices. The paper also discusses how ion bombardment uniquely enhances the plasmon-vibration coupling compared to other fabrication methods such as deposition or colloidal methods.
