Abstract:Plasmon-enhanced catalysis is a process that significantly depends on the strong electromagnetic fields generated near the photocatalyst surface. These fields are closely related to the structure and composition of the metallic nanostructure. In this study, we present the synthesis of quaternary metallic (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt) nanostructures with an innovative hybrid design that features a solid core and multiple hollow frame compartments. Initially, AuPtAg hybrid nanocrystals are created, followed by the transformation of the Ag solid component into Pd-based hollow nanoframes through a galvanic replacement reaction. The integration of both solid and hollow elements within a unified structure, along with the presence of plasmonic metals (Au/Ag) and catalytic metals (Pd/Pt), results in broadband plasmonic absorption across the visible spectrum and promising use in plasmon-enhanced catalysis. In particular, a significant enhancement in the catalytic conversion rate under UV-vis light irradiation is achieved when the material is used as a photocatalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Finite-difference time-domain simulation suggests that the combination of solid and hollow components within a single structure significantly intensifies the near-surface electromagnetic fields. This research introduces a viable synthetic strategy for creating multimetallic nanostructures with a hybrid composition of both solid and hollow elements. This offers valuable insights for the precise engineering of advanced photocatalysts for plasmonic catalysis applications.
