Abstract:In this article, a novel semi-elliptical bending waveguide (SEBWG) slow wave structure (SWS), which evolves from the folded-waveguide (FWG) SWS, is proposed and optimally designed by a new method that incorporates both the multistage collaborative deep learning (MCDL) and the differential evolution (DE) algorithms for traveling-wave tubes (TWTs). The major advantages of the SEBWG SWS over the conventional FWG SWS are its wider bandwidth, larger interaction impedance, and lower reflection coefficient. Additionally, to improve the design efficiency of the SEBWG SWS, MCDL utilizes artificial neural networks (ANNs) and datasets generated by electromagnetic (EM) simulations to build surrogate models. These surrogate models can subsequently be utilized to replace the time-consuming EM simulations. Following that, the DE algorithm is implemented to identify the optimal structural parameters that satisfy the design requirements. For verification, a G-band SEBWG TWT is investigated as an example. With a pencil electron beam of 19.45 kV and 40 mA, the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results indicate that the TWT equipped with the proposed SEBWG SWS can achieve a beam-wave interaction efficiency exceeding 2.22% across the bandwidth from 214 to 226 GHz, which represents an increase of more than 32.9% over that of the TWT with the FWG SWS. Furthermore, the proposed MCDL-DE method will enable the design process to become almost fully automated, reducing the workload of designers involved in numerous simulations.
