Abstract:The quantification of hydrological partitioning is key for sustainable water resource management. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of hydrological partitioning, we explored the relationship between the proportionality hypothesis and coupled water-energy equations. Additionally, we derived a water-energy complementary equation to assess water-energy balances. These balances are crucial for evaluating the hydrological effects of climate variations and catchment characteristics. The water-energy complementary relationship describes the sum of the nth power of the water supply ratio and that of the energy supply ratio to unity. More importantly, the proposed equations were applied to hydrological modelling for the monthly water balance, denoted as WECM. The model was evaluated using the CAMELS dataset in the United States and applied to the Hanjiang River Basin in China as a case study. The results demonstrate the applicability and robustness of the WECM in hydrological modeling. It performs well under large sample conditions, shows comparable performance to the ABCD model across various climatic conditions, and significantly outperforms the TWBM in sub-humid and arid regions. Specifically, in the Hanjiang River Basin case study, the WECM model achieved outstanding simulation accuracy, with an average NSE value of 0.863, KGE value of 0.868, and VE value of 7.469 % during the validation period. The NSE value increased by 3.3 % compared to the TWBM and by 2.3 % compared to the ABCD model, indicating a slight improvement in simulation accuracy. In summary, the proposed model shows strong applicability and clear advantages in monthly runoff simulations.
