Abstract:Designing catalysts with excellent activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline environments is a crucial challenge for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. Owing to their unique chemical properties and high electrical conductivity, transition metal tellurides (TMTs) are considered as an ideal type of electrocatalysts for OER, whereas most of the currently developed TMTs exhibit excessive overpotentials. Doping engineering is a potential solution to activate the OER activity of TMTs. In this work, Cobalt telluride nanowires with different sulfur doping levels are in-situ synthesized on nickel foam through a hydrothermal approach (S X -CoTe/NF, X = 5, 15, 30). The results show that S 15 –CoTe/NF has excellent performance, necessitating merely 255 mV of overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 , which is 53 mV lower than that of pristine CoTe/NF. The electrode exhibits good stability in alkaline solution by retaining its activity up to 100 h for OER. A series of analyses showed that the doping of sulfur effectively optimized the electronic states of the cobalt sites, increased the density of active sites, and decreased the electron transfer resistance, thereby significantly improving the OER performance of CoTe/NF. This paper offers a new strategy for developing stable and efficient TMTs OER catalysts.
