Abstract:Component commonality has been widely recognized as an important way to achieve product variety at low cost. This topic has drawn lots of attention from researchers and most results are built primarily on static models (single-period models or multi-period, periodic-review models with zero lead times) and their results typically show that using common component can be beneficial and significant when the number of products increases, demand correlation decreases and the degree of commonality increases[1][2]. Unlike most of the studies on the component commonality problem before, we study a multi-product ATO system which has stochastic component lead times is positive and demand for the product takes place continuously over time according to an independent Poisson process. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision process and by conducting a series of numerical studies we find that some properties exist in the static models do not hold in dynamic circumstance anymore.

Abstract:This paper studies the optimal allocation of one active redundancy to a k-out-of-n system in the context of statistically dependent component lifetimes. It is proved that assigning the redundancy to the weakest component is more favorable so as to get a larger system lifetime in terms of both the usual stochastic order and the stochastic preference order.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we studied the stochastic ordering behavior of series as well as parallel systems lifetimes comprising dependent and heterogeneous components, experiencing random shocks, and exhibiting distinct dependency structures. We establish certain conditions for the lifetime of individual components, the dependency among components defined by Archimedean copulas, and the impact of random shocks on the overall system lifetime to reach the conclusion. We consider components whose survival functions are either increasing log-concave or decreasing log-convex functions of the parameters involved and systems exhibit different dependency structures. These conditions make it possible to compare the lifetimes of two systems using the usual stochastic order framework. Additionally, we provide examples and graphical representations to elucidate our theoretical findings.

Abstract:For components having dependent and possibly non-identically distributed lifetimes, we study the stochastic comparison between lifetimes of a used coherent system and a similar new system consisting of used components. Sufficient conditions for the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order and the reversed hazard rate order under the situation when component lifetimes have general distribution are provided. As for proportional hazards component lifetimes, sufficient and necessary conditions guaranteeing several stochastic orders are derived, including the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order, the reversed hazard rate order, the likelihood ratio order and the relative ageing orderings. Several numerical examples are provided for illustrations.

Abstract:This paper studies the allocation of independent redundancies with a common life distribution to k-out-of-n systems of independent components with non identical life distributions. A sufficient condition is found for allocating more active redundancies to the weaker component to gain a larger lifetime for k-out-of-n systems, and assigning more standby redundancies to the weaker (stronger) components is proved to yield larger lifetime for series (parallel) systems in the sense of the increasing concave (convex) order. Also, the optimal policy is proved to be majorized by all other policies when the system's components are stochastically ordered.

Abstract:Most of the research, on the study of the reliability properties of technical systems, assume that the components of the systems operate independently. However, in real life situation, it is more reasonable to assume that there is dependency among the components of the system. In this paper, we consider a (n−k+1)-out-of-n structure in which the component lifetimes are dependent random variables. We investigate stochastic properties of the inactivity time of the failed components of the system, extending some existing results in the literature where the components of the system are assumed to be independent and identically distributed. The results are then extended to the case where the system has an arbitrary coherent structure with exchangeable components.

Abstract:In recent research, one of the major focus on redundancy allocation problems has been on the possibility of using allocative components randomly selected from a heterogeneous population consisting of <math>m</math> different subpopulations. Under this setup, most of these works assume that the components within each subpopulation are independent. Here, we consider systems comprising <math>n</math> possibly dependent subsystems with independent or dependent components. Then we provide sufficient conditions on the number of components randomly chosen from the heterogeneous population in order to improve the reliability of the whole system. In addition, we present illustrative numerical results for different copula functions and marginal lifetime distributions.

Abstract:Modern systems are operating under dynamic environments and the components therein often exhibit positively correlated lifetimes. Moreover, due to various practical reasons such as the load sharing mechanism, it is not uncommon that lifetimes of some components dominate the others within the same system. In this study, we first propose a statistical model for system reliability evaluation by jointly considering the correlated component lifetimes and the lifetime ordering constraints. In specific, the effects of the dynamic environments are incorporated by modelling the cumulative hazard function as an exponential dispersion process and the lifetime ordering constraints are modelled by truncating the support of the joint lifetime distribution. We then discuss the statistical inference based on the proposed model. The point estimates of the model parameters as well as the lifetime quantiles are obtained by the maximum likelihood method, and the confidence intervals are constructed by using the generalized pivots. Extensive simulation show that the proposed interval estimation procedures can achieve accurate coverage even under small sample sizes. Two real examples are used to illustrate the proposed modelling and estimation framework.

Abstract:This paper considers parallel and series systems with heterogeneous components having dependent exponential lifetimes. The underlying dependence is assumed to be Archimedean and the component lifetimes are supposed to be connected according to an Archimedean copula. Sufficient conditions are found to dominate a parallel system with heterogenous exponential components, with respect to the dispersive order, by another parallel system with homogenous exponential components where the dependence structure between lifetimes of components is the same. We also compare two series systems (and two parallel systems) with general one-parameter dependent components and with respect to the usual stochastic ordering. Examples are given to illustrate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:This paper studies the optimal component allocation policy of a k-out-of-n system composed of n independent subsystems. Each subsystem includes one or several allocative components arranged in parallel [series], and these allocative components are drawn from a randomly selected batch of manufactured components. We compare two allocation policies by means of the majorization order. As a consequence, we get the optimal allocation policy under the constraint of the maximum number of components allowed for each subsystem and the entire system. We also analyze the influence of the batches heterogeneity on the k-out-of-n system reliability. Finally, several illustrative examples are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigatek-out-of-nsystems with independent and identically distributed components. Some characterizations of the IFR(2), DMRL, NBU(2) and NBUC classes of life distributions are obtained in terms of the monotonicity of the residual life given that the (n-k)th failure has occurred at timet≥ 0. These results complement those reported by Belzunce, Franco and Ruiz (1999). Similar conclusions based on the residual life of a parallel system conditioned by the (n-k)th failure time are presented as well.
