Abstract:With the development of Voronoi theory and algorithm, more and more attention was paid in the application of Voronoi in Cartography. In this paper, Voronoi Diagram and its applications were briefly introduced at first. Then the author focused on its applications in Cartography from the identification and extraction of map information, map generalization, automatic name placement and other aspects. Finally, problems encountered in the applications and the directions of its future development were given.

Abstract:The use of Voronoi diagrams in GIS-oriented spatiotemporal databases is considered. The Voronoi algorithms generate appropriate meshes for data interpolation. We illustrate the data representation in this database generated from a point-based spatiotemporal relation in the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) database.

Abstract:Voronoi diagram is a basic data structure in geometry. It has been increasingly attracting the investigation into diverse applications since it was introduced into GIS field. Most current methods for computing Voronoi diagrams are implemented in vector mode. However, the vector-based methods are good only for points and difficult for complex objects. At the same time, most current raster methods are implemented only in a uniformed-grid raster mode. There is a lack of hierarchical method implemented in a hierarchical space such as quadtrees. In this paper such a hierarchical method is described for computing generalized Voronoi diagrams by means of hierarchical distance transform and hierarchical morphological operators based on the quadtree structure. Three different solutions are described and illustrated with experiments for different applications. Furthermore, the errors caused by this method are analyzed and are reduced by constructing the dynamical hierarchical distance structure elements.

Abstract:Query processing for trajectory data is very important to spatio-temporal databases. Most of the research work in this field is based on the Euclidean space. However, in many applications, the spatio-temporal trajectories of moving objects are distributed in spatial network environment intensively, and the movements of moving objects are constrained by given network segments. Under such circumstances, existing Euclidean-based methods are ineffective. In this paper, we present a Network Voronoi Diagram (NVD) based method, to solve range query problem on a huge amount of spatio-temporal trajectories in spatial networks. The experiments demonstrated that our method is very efficient even when the trajectory datasets are huge.

Abstract:A new form of weighted Voronoi diagrams named Projective Weighted Voronoi Diagram (PWVD) is introduced. Thus the interspace produced by tessellation can be used in GIS spatial competition analysis model. Several different partition models and competition triangles' attribute and distribution characters are discussed. The final section shows some potential applications of the analysis method.

Abstract:The theoretical and computational aspects of weighted Voronoi diagrams have been widely researched and applied, but few algorithms are implemented in combination with the geographic information system software for practical use. A general vector-based approach is proposed to generate multiplicatively weighted Voronoi diagrams, additively weighted Voronoi diagrams and additively weighted power Voronoi diagrams for points by using methods of region division and region union based on ArcGIS Engine, aiming to establish a kind of spatial data model used for boundary division, urban centricity expression and force field analysis, etc. Finally, this paper shows an experiment proving the practicability of the proposed algorithm in the visualization of spatial data.

Abstract:The paper presents a computational model of spatialautocorrelation based on a Voronoi-like auxiliary structure. It shows that the Voronoi-like partition of map objects can be used to discern spatial patterns (e.g. clustered or dispersed) of geographic phenomena. In this paper, we transform the problem of characterizing the patterns for different geometry types (i.e. points, curves, and polygons) into a process of calculating spatial autocorrelation based on the auxiliary partition units. The method is shown to be successful for the designated tasks.

Abstract:Voronoi diagrams own very special characteristics and have been introduced into GIS field for spatial relation description, buffer analysis, spatial interpolation, spatial information visualization, measurement of spatial distribution. This paper proposes the concept of Voronoi diagrams' eccentricity (VDE), i.e. VDE = d2/S, where the d is the distance from generator's geometric center to the Voronoi polygon's gravitational center, S is the area of the Voronoi polygon. Furthermore, the adjacent eccentricity direction (AED) is defined to sense VDE's direction in different adjacent generator. VDEs and AEDs can reflect the spatial distribution's uniform, density change and cluster outline feature. A preliminary experiment based on VDE and AED for extracting the outlines of clusters has been done and proves the method is feasible and meaningful.
Study on the Algorithm for Creating Projective Weighted Voronoi Diagrams and Competitive Triangles in GIS

Abstract:Different from the former focus on the neighbor region analysis of spatial objects, the purpose of the study is to locate and analyze the competitive region of weighted objects in the Euclidian R 2 space. A new form of weighted Voronoi diagrams named projective weighted Voronoi diagram (PWVD) is introduced to resolve this problem. Based on the model of spatial tessellation of ordinary voronoi diagram and weighted Voronoi diagram, a projective spatial tessellate model is presented, which can produce competitive region in planar space. Thus the interspaces produced by the tessellation i.e. competitive triangles (CT), are examined. Next, three weighted methods: proportional, gravitational and Gaussian are applied to produce different CT respectively. The properties of the triangles and PWVD, such as the inclusion and overlap of CT and the intrusion, inter intrusion and neighbor region sharing of PWVD and CT are analyzed too. At last section, the creation algorithm of CT is discussed and the result of computer simulation shows that it is feasible to use the competitive triangles as the competitive region of the Euclidian R 2 space. From this study, it is concluded that the method might be widely used in future's GIS spatial analyses and practical applications.
A Practical Algorithm for Constructing Voronoi Diagrams of General Figures

Abstract:Considering the complexity of geographical elements in GIS,a practical algorithm for constructing Voronoi diagrams of general figures is put forward in this paper.Firstly,the general figures were scattered into point-set by using the interpolation method.Secondly,Voronoi diagrams of the point-set were constructed with sweep-line algorithm.In order to distinguish the different types of the Voronoi edges,the existing data structure of sweep-line algorithm was amended.Lastly,Voronoi polygons were merged according to the proposed rules if they belonged to the same figure.In addition,how to deal with the complex figures in this algorithm was also discussed.Case study indicated that the proposed method has a general advantage in the time and computational precision.

Abstract:Introducing Clifford Algebra as the mathematical foundation, we proposed a unified multi-dimensional GIS data model, constructed by linking data objects of different dimensions within the multivector structure of Clifford algebra. Then, algorithms for geographical network analysis (such as shortest path, minimum unicom and maximum flow analysis) and high-dimensional voronoi diagram were constructed. We use both simulation and real world data to test the usability and performance of our algorithms. The result gives very positive prospect of implement GIS analysis algorithms under Clifford Algebra framework. In that way, traditional GIS analyses algorithms can be extended not only accommodate various dimensions but also get beneficial on performance.

Abstract:Weighted Voronoi diagram for polygons generalizes the generator points to polygons based on weighted Vor-onoi diagram. Since it is computation redundancy and low efficiency for large scale of data, this paper presents a parallel algorithm of weighted Voronoi diagrams for polygons, which is improved with extracting boundary points and realized on Hadoop platform. The experiment results show that the algorithm can be used to deal with large scale raster data to signifi-cantly improve the speed. It can also be applied in the urban green-belt planning of Xi’an city to provide decision-making basis for green space design.

Abstract:This paper presents a dynamic spatial-data index model that enhances the spatial-data indexing efficiency of hierarchical tree with Voronoi data structure. In "global GIS", the Earth data is very large and changed continuously in local areas. Current GIS researches represent data model based on either raster or vector models. In these models hierarchy of space and object are separately handled and can be hierarchically grouped using different kinds of tree structure (such as B-tree, kd-tree, Qua-tree, R-tree and R+-tree, etc). Different users may be careful for different areas on different hierarchy. How to pick-up data of the interested area in run time is a key problem in "the global GIS"? The major limitation of current spatial-data hierarchical index models lacks of the spatial relationships (such as adjacency, etc.) among the same level. When spatial objects are dynamic changed in a spatial process, maintenance of spatial-data index among spatial objects at different of hierarchy are difficult. To solve this problem, Voronoi data model is introduced in this paper. Voronoi spatial model combines the features of both vector (object modeling) and raster (field modeling) model. Hierarchical index that organizes both the object and space can be integrated in the Voronoi spatial model. Additionally, Voronoi structure has a feature of stability on the local dynamic change. This paper demonstrates how to set up dynamic spatial-data index mechanism by combining Voronoi spatial structure and hierarchical tree.
Reverse Nearest Neighbor Queries Using Voronoi Diagrams

Abstract:To effectively solve reverse nearest neighbor queries in a dataset,the properties of the Voronoi diagram and space-dividing regions were used to evaluate the reverse nearest neighbors of the given query points.By using Voronoi diagrams,the reverse nearest neighbors of a given point could be queried without computing the nearest neighbors every time.In each query,only a few data points were filtered out to perform a judgment about the reverse nearest neighbor.An algorithm and judgment method are given for instances of changes to the reverse nearest neighbor of the given query points caused by the addition or deletion of data points from the dataset.To more easily search for these points in a database,corresponding database storage structures were designed.Comparative analysis shows that this method is suitable for reverse nearest neighbor queries of data points on planar surfaces and complex curved surfaces.

Abstract:Voronoi Diagram is a fundamental geometric structure of space partition. To generate the Voronoi diagrams of the line or polygon objects, the raster method is more convenient than the vector method, while raster generation works better with the generation of full-feature Voronoi Diagram. But for the vector data, the computation in the raster method is realized based on the partition of space. So the generation algorithm is high level of space complexity and the obtaining the neighbors of pixel is very difficult. In order to resolve these problems, a generation of Voronoi Diagram with raster and vector properties based on linear quadtree structure is introduced. The main principle is to reduce the space complexity produced by the partition of space and obtains the neighbors by the spatial index which the linear quadtree structure itself is regarded as. The computing model of backward dilation based on mathematical morphology and several optimized computing characteristics of the model are proposed. The test proves that the time complexity of the method is lower than that of uniform grid structure and that of common quadtree structure, and the space complexity is lower than that of uniform grid structure.

Abstract:The existing methods for the construction of Voronoi Diagram and the nearest neighbor query have several disadvantages. In view of the disadvantages, the new methods were studied in detail. To construct the Voronoi diagram effectively, the datasets were grouped in advance, and then the divide-and-conquer method combined with the increment method was used to generate Delaunay triangulation. By generating the Voronoi diagram from Delaunay triangulation, the Creat_Vor algorithm was proposed. In order to effectively query and update the nearest neighbors of the given points, the methods based on the spatial grids and the Voronoi diagram were studied. The VGride_NN algorithm and VGride_BNN algorithm were put forward. Theory and experiments show that the new methods have advantages in dealing with the dynamic dataset.

Abstract:The optimum layout of urban system is one of important contents in urban planning. To make regional urban system planning more suitable to the requirements of urbanization development, this paper tests a quantitative method based on GIS & Voronoi diagram. Its workflows include calculating city competitiveness data, spreading the city competitiveness analysis by aid of spatial analysis and data mining functions in GIS, getting the structural characteristics of urban system, and proposing the corresponding optimum scheme of the allocation. This method is tested using the data collected from Shandong Province, China.

Abstract:Voronoi diagram on the earth surface is a powerful tool to study spatial proximity at continental or global scale. However, its computation remains challenging because geospatial features have complex shapes. This paper presents a raster-based algorithm to generate Voronoi diagrams on earth׳s surface. The algorithm approximates the exact point-to-point geographical distances using the cell-to-cell geographical distances calculated by a geographical distance transform. The result is a distance image on which Voronoi diagram is delineated. Compared to existing methods, the proposed algorithm calculates geographical distances based on an earth ellipsoid and allows Voronoi generators to take complex shapes. Most importantly, its approximation error is bounded thus enabling users to control the accuracy of the Voronoi diagram through grid resolution.
