Abstract:Data-driven strategies have proven efficient for the design of high-performance electrocatalysts in the vast material search space. In this review, we present an overview of data-driven approaches to emerging electrocatalyst design: high throughput experiments, high-throughput calculations, and machine learning. High-throughput experiments facilitate rapid synthesis and characterization of electrocatalysts, leading to efficient exploration of various materials. High-throughput calculations predict and screen materials' properties, allowing for the identification of promising electrocatalysts. The integration of machine learning further augments these high-throughput approaches through critical insight extracted from the large dataset, fast prediction of materials' performance, and optimization of material discovery. Employing these data-driven strategies synergistically could accelerate the development of electrocatalysts. Such advancements could promote green energy technologies and substantially contribute to mitigating the grand challenges posed by global climate change.

Abstract:Theoretical advancements on the thermodynamics, kinetics, and thermokinetic correlation are summarized, based on which the thermodynamics guided‐, kinetics guided‐, and the synergistic thermokinetic correlation guided‐design strategies of advanced electrocatalysts are discussed. Efficient and robust electrocatalysts play a central role in clean energy conversion, enabling a number of sustainable processes for future technologies. The traditional explorations of electrocatalyst relying on the trial‐and‐error approaches are definitely tedious and inefficient. Theoretical progresses on reactive thermodynamics and kinetics in recent years have initiated a powerful theory‐guided design strategy of electrocatalysts. Herein, this review first summarizes design principles for reactive activity and stability, presenting the thermodynamics, kinetics, and the synergistic thermokinetic correlation in electrocatalytic reaction. Second, the screening criterion, reasonable design, mechanistic understanding, and performance evaluation of the typical electrocatalysts as divided into the thermodynamics oriented‐, kinetics oriented‐, and thermokinetic correlation oriented‐designs are discussed. The necessity of correlating thermodynamics and kinetics into the rational design and mechanism clarification is highlighted. Finally, the conclusions and perspectives of the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts are proposed.

Abstract:The exploitation of competent electrocatalysts is a key issue of the broad application of many promising electrochemical processes, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). The traditional searches for good electrocatalysts rely on the trial-and-error approaches, which are typically tedious and inefficient. In the past decades, some fundamental principles, activity descriptors and catalytic mechanisms have been established to accelerate the discovery of advanced electrocatalysts. Hence, it is time to summarize these theo-ry-related research advances that unravel the structure-performance relationships and enables predictive ability in electrocatalysis studies. In this review, we summarize some basic aspects of catalytic theories that are commonly used in the design of electrocatalysts (e.g., Sabatier principle, d-band theory, adsorption-energy scaling relation, activity descriptors) and their relevance. Then, we briefly introduced the fundamental mechanisms and central challenges of HER, OER, ORR, CO2RR and NRR electrocatalysts, and highlight the theory-based efforts used to address the chal-lenges facing these electrocatalysis processes. Finally, we propose the key challenges and opportu-nities of theory-driven electrocatalysis on their future.

Abstract:Future renewable energy supply and a cleaner Earth greatly depend on various crucial catalytic reactions for the society. Atomically dispersed metal site electrocatalysts (ADMSEs) have attracted tremendous research interest and are considered as the next-generation promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts due to the maximum atom utilization efficiency, tailorable catalytic sites, and tunable electronic structures. Despite great efforts have been devoted to the development of ADMSEs, the systematic summary for design principles of high-efficiency ADMSEs is not sufficiently highlighted for ORR. In this review, the authors first summarize the fundamental ORR mechanisms for ADMSEs, and further discuss the intrinsic catalytic mechanism from the perspective of theoretical calculation. Then, the advanced characterization techniques to identify the active sites and effective synthesis methods to prepare catalysts for ADMSEs are also showcased. Subsequently, a special emphasis is placed on effective strategies for the rational design of the advanced ADMSEs. Finally, the present challenges to be addressed in practical application and future research directions are also proposed to overcome the relevant obstacles for developing high-efficiency ORR electrocatalysts. This review aims to provide a deeper understanding for catalytic mechanisms and valuable design principles to obtain the advanced ADMSEs for sustainable energy conversion and storage techniques.

Abstract:Scientists are increasingly paying attention to using theoretical design as a guide combined with modern in-situ characterization techniques to develop catalysts with high activity, low cost, and long-term life. The review discusses the progress of catalyst theoretical design and corresponding experiments based on three typical oxygen evolution catalytic mechanisms, including the adsorbate evolution, lattice oxygen-mediated, and unconventional bifunctional mechanisms. This work briefly describes the commonly used tools and descriptors in theory as well as the electrochemical techniques and characterizations in experiments. Our purpose is to sort out the ways to closely integrate the theoretical method and experimental verification from the perspective of reaction mechanism, and to provide some experience reference for the future development of theoretical tools and experimental technologies. The summarization of the progress in the design strategy of OER electrocatalysts is beneficial to building the future global energy mix. The strategy of combining theoretical design and experimental verification can shed light on the design, preparation, and application of advanced OER catalysts.image

Abstract:The current scientific landscape is primed for a transformative leap in materials research. This review envisions promoting electrocatalyst discovery through a "data fablab" paradigm, combining advanced combinatorial synthesis, high‐throughput screening, and machine learning‐driven analysis. By critically assessing these synergies, complex chemical exploration aims to simplify on a compact "electrocatalyst chip", accelerating solutions to global energy, sustainability, and technological challengs. Throughout history, the quest for a "magic crystal ball" to predict the future and uncover the world's greatest innovations has captivated human imagination. For scientists, the dream of a compact chip brimming with data and wisdom is equally tantalizing. Despite the meteoric rise of artificial intelligence, the research paradigm for electrocatalysts has lagged, advancing at a surprisingly sluggish pace. Abstract:Metal-based electrocatalysts with different sizes (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) show different catalytic behaviors for various electrocatalytic reactions. Regulating the coordination environment of active sites with precision to rationally design an efficient electrocatalyst is of great significance for boosting electrocatalytic reactions. This review summarizes the recent process of heterogeneous supported single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles catalysts in electrocatalytic reactions, respectively, and figures out the construct strategies and design concepts based on their strengths and weaknesses. Specifically, four key factors for enhancing electrocatalytic performance, including electronic structure, coordination environment, support property, and interfacial interactions are proposed to provide an overall comprehension to readers in this field. Finally, some insights into the current challenges and future opportunities of the heterogeneous supported electrocatalysts are provided.

Abstract:Various metal-based electrocatalysts from nanocrystals, to clusters and single-atoms, have been well-discovered towards high-efficient power devices and electrocatalytic conversion. To accelerate energy transformation materials discovery, developing high-throughput DFT calculations and machine-learning techniques is of great necessity. This review comprehensively outlines the latest progress of theory-guided design of advanced energy transformation materials. Especially, we focus on the study of single atoms in various power devices, such as fuel cell (oxygen reduction reaction, ORR; acid oxidation reaction; alcohol oxidation reaction), and other reactions for energy-related electrocatalytic conversion of small molecules, such as H2O2 evolution reactions (2e− ORR), water splitting (H2 evolution reaction/O2 evolution reaction, HER/OER), N2 reduction reaction (NRR), and CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). Firstly, the electronic structure, interaction mechanism, and reaction activation path are discussed to provide an overall blueprint in electrocatalysis and batteries mentioned above. Thereafter, the experimental synthesis strategies, structural recognition, and electrocatalytic performance for the advanced energy transformation materials are figured out. Finally, some viewpoints into the current issues and future design concept of the advanced energy transformation materials are provided.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis can enable efficient energy storage and conversion and thus is an effective way to achieve carbon neutrality. The unique structure and function of organisms can offer many ideas for the design of electrocatalysts, which has become one of the most promising research directions. Recently, the understanding of the mechanism of bio-inspired electrocatalysis has become clearer, which has promoted the design of bio-inspired catalysts and catalytic systems. Various bio-inspired catalysts (enzyme-like catalysts, layered porous catalysts, superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic surfaces, and so on) have been developed to enable efficient electrocatalytic reactions. Herein, we discuss the key advances in the field of bio-inspired electrocatalysts progressed in recent years. First, the role of bio-inspiration in increasing the intrinsic activity and number of active sites of catalysts is introduced. Then, the structure and mechanism of layered porous catalytic systems that mimic biological transport systems are comprehensively discussed. Subsequently, the design of three-phase interfaces from micro-nanoscale to atomic scale is highlighted, including the wettability of the electrode surface and the transport system near the electrode. We conclude the review by identifying challenges in bio-inspired electrocatalysts and providing insights into future prospects for the exciting research field.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt) is considered "the Holy Grail" of electrocatalysts, which has emerged as an important branch in electrocatalysts. Designing electrocatalysts is the first and most important step to achieve Pt with advanced performance. However, the traditional composition and morphology strategies have been unable to further promote the performances of Pt-based materials. Therefore, some new strategies for advanced Pt-based catalysts, including phase-, surface-, interface-, and strain-engineered, emerged at a historic moment, which have harvested unprecedented electrochemical improvements. Herein, recent advances of the above new strategies for designing high-performance Pt-based electrocatalysts are highlighted. In each section, the authors first introduce the basic concepts of phase-, surface-, interface-, and strain-engineered strategies and their essences for improving the electrocatalyic performances. The synthetic methods and electrochemical applications of these catalysts are summarized and demonstrated by representative examples. Finally, the recent challenges and valuable perspectives for the future development of advanced Pt-based catalysts are proposed.

Abstract:In-depth understanding of the real-time behaviors of active sites during electrocatalysis is essential for the advancement of sustainable energy conversion. Recently, the concept of dynamic active sites has been recognized as a potent approach for creating self-adaptive electrocatalysts that can address a variety of electrocatalytic reactions, outperforming traditional electrocatalysts with static active sites. Nonetheless, the comprehension of the underlying principles that guide the engineering of dynamic active sites is presently insufficient. In this review, we systematically analyze the fundamentals of dynamic active sites for electrocatalysis and consider important future directions for this emerging field. We reveal that dynamic behaviors and reversibility are two crucial factors that influence electrocatalytic performance. By reviewing recent advances in dynamic active sites, we conclude that implementing dynamic electrocatalysis through variable reaction environments, correlating the model of dynamic evolution with catalytic properties, and developing localized and ultrafast in-situ/operando techniques are keys to designing high-performance dynamic electrocatalysts. This review paves the way to the development of the next-generation electrocatalyst and the universal theory for both dynamic and static active sites.

Abstract:Following the fast development of electrocatalysts, atomic catalysts have surely become the most frontier research topic in energy supply systems. In varied electrochemical reactions, they have displayed untapped potential for practical applications due to the exceptional performances in both electroactivity and selectivity, ultra‐high metal utilization, and flexible substrates. Besides the conventional experimental synthesis strategies and characterization techniques, advanced theoretical calculations and even machine learning algorithms have been introduced to understand and predict the electrocatalysis performances of novel atomic catalysts, supplying the insightful knowledge for the future rational design and synthesis of the atomic catalyst with the desired properties. Therefore, this review will highlight the recent advance achievements in atomic catalysts regarding the atomic catalyst synthesis and applications, covering the mainstream electrochemical process in energy applications. Meanwhile, we also summarize the application of advanced theoretical explorations as valuable references for future electrocatalyst design. Moreover, we will summarize the existing challenges for the practical applications and the prospects of present atomic catalysts.

Abstract:The challenging sluggish reaction kinetics of hydrogen energy‐related electrocatalysis can be overcome via exploring electrocatalysts with high‐efficient activity and long‐term durability. However, the deficiency of comprehensive and in‐depth understanding of the evolution of the electrocatalysts, nature of active centers, intermediate species absorbed in the electrocatalysts, and the reaction pathway during the electrocatalytic processes seriously limits the elucidation of the composition/structure–activity relationship of electrocatalysts. To this end, plenty of powerful in situ techniques that can provide atomic/molecular information are employed to bridge the understanding of fundamental mechanisms to the practical development of electrocatalysts. This review summarizes design strategies based on composition regulation and morphology design for tuning the electronic/geometric structures of electrocatalytic materials with improved activity and stability. Moreover, the recent application of in situ infrared, Raman, and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy is elaborated with emphases on tracking the dynamic evolution during electrocatalysis and building a link between the composition/structure and activity of electrocatalysts. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives for in situ monitoring techniques to gain an understanding more deeply and comprehensively in the hydrogen energy‐related electrocatalysis are proposed. This review provides insights into the rational optimization of electrocatalysts and inspire the unraveling mechanism of the enhanced electrocatalytic performance in future research.

Abstract:<p>In the past few decades, tremendous advances have been made in electrocatalysis due to the rational design of electrocatalysts at the nanoscale level. Further development requires engineering electrocatalysts at the atomic level, which is a grand challenge. Here, the recent advances in cation exchange strategy, which is a powerful tool for fine‐tuning atomic structure of electrocatalysts via surface faceting, heteroatom doping, defects formation, and strain modulation, are the main focus. Proper atomic structure engineering effectively adjusts the electronic structure, and thus enhances the electronic conductivity and facilitates the adsorption/desorption of reaction intermediates. By virtue, the cation exchange strategy greatly boosts the intrinsic and apparent activities of electrocatalysts and shows a great potential toward design of new energy conversion devices, such as water splitting devices and metal–air batteries. It is believed that cation exchange offers new insights and opportunities for the rational design of a new generation of electrocatalysts.</p>

Abstract:Electrochemical energy conversion has emerged as one of the most promising approaches to alleviate the issues of energy shortage and environmental pollution by converting small molecules into higher value products in a sustainable way. Practical applications of this technology are limited by the development of electrocatalysts with low cost, high activity, and long durability. Huge advances have been achieved in electrocatalyst discovery during the past decades, and computational means have played an irreplaceable role. Inspired by this, we introduce and discuss ???how computations accelerate electrocatalyst discovery???in this review, from the aspects of providing insights and guidelines. By using some typical examples, the advances of theoretical investigations aimed at identifying the active sites and understanding the reaction mechanisms and activity origin are first summarized. Then, an overview of the design principles and screening strategies for superior electrocatalysts is highlighted. We close by outlining the future perspectives in this field.

Abstract:Advances, challenges, and perspectives in modeling the realistic electrocatalytic processes at complex solid‐liquid interfaces have been extensively reviewed and discussed. The significance of the inclusion of explicit solvation and electrode potential as well as the strategies toward the design of highly efficient electrocatalysts are crucial for rational design of electrocatalysts. The rational design of electrocatalysis has emerged as one of the most thriving means for mitigating energy and environmental crises. The key to this effort is the understanding of the complex electrochemical interface, wherein the electrode potential as well as various internal factors such as H‐bond network, adsorbate coverage, and dynamic behavior of the interface collectively contribute to the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity. In this context, the authors have reviewed recent theoretical advances, and especially, the contributions to modeling the realistic electrocatalytic processes at complex electrochemical interfaces, and illustrated the challenges and fundamental problems in this field. Specifically, the significance of the inclusion of explicit solvation and electrode potential as well as the strategies toward the design of highly efficient electrocatalysts are discussed. The structure‐activity relationships and their dynamic responses to the environment and catalytic functionality under working conditions are illustrated to be crucial factors for understanding the complexed interface and the electrocatalytic activities. It is hoped that this review can help spark new research passion and ultimately bring a step closer to a realistic and systematic modeling method for electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The electrooxidation of organics opens up an innovative way for the efficient use of electrical energy and environmentally friendly generation of high-value-added chemicals. The key challenges are the design of efficient and stable electrocatalysts and the creation of energy-efficient coupled systems. This review reports recent advances in the electrooxidation of organics. Then, the major fundamental principles of electrocatalyst design are elaborately summarized in terms of (1) improving the intrinsic catalyst activity of the catalytic site, (2) increasing the variety and number of active sites, and (3) promoting the formation of highly active intermediates. Afterward, the energy-saving and multifunctional coupling systems consisting of organic electrooxidation reaction at anode and reduction reaction at cathode are overviewed and systematically discussed. Finally, the key challenges and prospects regarding further accelerating the basic research and applied research of organic electrooxidation are briefly proposed.

Abstract:Utilizing renewable electricity resources to produce various C/ O/N/H-containing chemicals is an extremely promising energy conversion pathway. However, huge amounts of electricity inputs are always necessary for these electrochemical synthetic processes. Therefore, developing efficient electrocatalyst candidates is the key, where the charge-transfer model plays a vital role in the rational design of electrocatalysts. During the past decade, three main achievements have been attained in electrochemical catalysis: (i) Numerous new materials with unique physicochemical properties have been explored, (ii) The systems of activity descriptors and design principles have been successfully established, and (iii) The insights into the underlying catalysis mechanisms have deepened. The charge-transfer model is crucial for these strides and achievements. This short review will systematically discuss the charge-transfer model, including its origin, description, correlation with material properties, acquisition, and representative applications in electrochemical fields. We also make a brief conclusion and outlook for the chargetransfer model in the development of electrochemistry.

Abstract:Clean and sustainable energy needs the development of advanced heterogeneous catalysts as they are of vital importance for electrochemical transformation reactions in renewable energy conversion and storage devices. Advances in nanoscience and material chemistry have afforded great opportunities for the design and optimization of nanostructured electrocatalysts with high efficiency and practical durability. In this review article, we specifically emphasize the synthetic methodologies for the versatile surface overcoating engineering reported to date for optimal electrocatalysts. We discuss the recent progress in the development of surface overcoating-derived electrocatalysts potentially applied in polymer electrolyte fuel cells and water electrolyzers by correlating catalyst intrinsic structures with electrocatalytic properties. Finally, we present the opportunities and perspectives of surface overcoating engineering for the design of advanced (electro)catalysts and their deep exploitation in a broad scope of applications.
