Abstract:neutral electrolyte was used to prepare plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings on biodegradable high-purity Mg (HP-Mg). Formation mechanism, surface morphology, and chemical compositions of the PEO coating were investigated. It was found that a porous layer formed first at the low cell voltage with an outward-growth characteristic, and then a dense layer was inward formed after the cell voltage reached the critical voltage. The main compositions of the PEO coating were MgF2, K2MgF4, KMgF3, Mg-3(PO4)(2), and MgO. Electrochemical measurements were carried out in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 degrees C to evaluate the long-term degradation performance. The coated HP-Mg exhibited superior degradation properties, and the coating remained intact over 180 days of degradation. During the degradation process, the pores and microcracks within the coating would gradually be filled with degradation products, enhancing the coating adhesion strength. The results of the cytotoxicity test validated the biosafety of the coating. Besides, a high-quality coating can be fabricated on the surface of biodegradable orthopedic Mg screws using this PEO treatment. The PEO coating possessed excellent degradation performance and biocompatibility, showing great potential in the practical production of biodegradable Mg implants.
