Abstract:We read with great interest the recent article “Hypothermia may attenuate ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiomyocyte death by reducing autophagy” by Cheng et al. [ [1] Cheng B.C. Huang H.S. Chao C.M. Hsu C.C. Chen C.Y. Chang C.P. Hypothermia may attenuate ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiomyocyte death by reducing autophagy. Int J Cardiol. 2013; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijcard.2013.01.162 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Scopus (22) Google Scholar ] in the International Journal of Cardiology. The authors demonstrated that application of mild hypothermia could reduce the cell autophagy in H9c2 cardiomyocytes subjected to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). To the best of our knowledge, autophagy, as one of the forms of programmed cell death, was firstly reported by the authors to be a potential mechanism for the cardioprotection provided by mild hypothermia. And it would help us to expand our understanding of the basic mechanisms of the beneficial effects of mild hypothermia. Based on their findings, both hypothermia applied pre-ischemia and post-ischemia significantly reduced the I/R-induced cell death possibly through reducing autophagy in H9c2 cardiomyocytes, while pre-ischemic hypothermia had earlier and superior benefits than post-ischemic hypothermia during reperfusion [ [1] Cheng B.C. Huang H.S. Chao C.M. Hsu C.C. Chen C.Y. Chang C.P. Hypothermia may attenuate ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiomyocyte death by reducing autophagy. Int J Cardiol. 2013; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijcard.2013.01.162 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Scopus (22) Google Scholar ]. However, the authors didn't provide us the information about the impact of hypothermia on autophagy during ischemia in H9c2 cells. It would be very interesting to know these details, since autophagy has been reported to be cardioprotective during ischemia [ 2 Yan L. Vatner D.E. Kim S.J. et al. Autophagy in chronically ischemic myocardium. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2005; 102: 13807-13812 Crossref PubMed Scopus (449) Google Scholar , 3 Matsui Y. Takagi H. Qu X. et al.
