Abstract:The alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNT) is the fundamental requirement to ensure their excellent functions but seems to be desolated in recent years. A facile method, hot-press combined with peel-off (HPPO), is introduced here, through which CNT can be successfully vertically aligned on the polymeric membrane substrate. Shear force and mechanical stretch are proposed to be the main forces to align the tubes perpendicular to the substrate surface during the peel-off process. The alignment of CNT keeps its orientation in a thin hybrid membrane by dip-coating cellulose acetate dope solution. It is expected that the stable alignment of CNT by HPPO would contribute to the realization of its potential applications.
Preparation of Coaxial-Electrospun Poly[bis(p-methylphenoxy)]phosphazene Nanofiber Membrane for Enzyme Immobilization

Abstract:A core/sheath nanofiber membrane with poly[bis(p-methylphenoxy)]phospha-zene (PMPPh) as the sheath and easily spinnable polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the core was prepared via a coaxial electrospinning process. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology of the nanofiber membrane. It was found that the concentration of the PAN spinning solution and the ratio of the core/sheath solution flow rates played a decisive role in the coaxial electrospinning process. In addition, the stabilized core/sheath PMPPh nanofiber membrane was investigated as a support for enzyme immobilization because of its excellent biocompatibility, high surface/volume ratio, and large porosity. Lipase from Candida rugosa was immobilized on the nanofiber membrane by adsorption. The properties of the immobilized lipase on the polyphosphazene nanofiber membrane were studied and compared with those of a PAN nanofiber membrane. The results showed that the adsorption capacity (20.4 ± 2.7 mg/g) and activity retention (63.7%) of the immobilized lipase on the polyphosphazene nanofiber membrane were higher than those on the PAN membrane.
Formation of a planar biomimetic membrane with a novel zwitterionic polymer for nanopore sequencing

Abstract:Biological membranes containing transmembrane channels play a crucial role in numerous cellular processes, and mimicking of cell membranes has garnered significant interest in various biomedical applications, particularly nanopore sequencing technology, where remarkable progress has been made with nanopore membranes. Considering the fragility of biomimetic membranes formed by artificial lipids and the limited mimicry of those formed by common block copolymers, this study developed a novel amphiphilic polymer by covalently linking hydrophilic heads of phospholipids to the ends of hydrophobic poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) chains. The absence of hydrophilic blocks allowed for good control over the polydispersity of this polymer within a narrow range. The high flexibility of PDMS chains, combined with relatively uniform molecular weights, would confer enhanced stability and robustness to polymeric membranes. Dynamic light scattering measurements and microdroplet formation tests demonstrated good amphipathic properties of these novel polymers when maintaining an appropriate hydrophilic-hydrophobic ratio. Moreover, the high similarity between the hydrophilic heads and natural phospholipids makes this polymer more compatible with biomolecules. A successful protein insertion experiment confirmed both the stability of this polymeric membrane and its compatibility with membrane proteins. As a result, this novel amphiphilic polymer exhibits great potential for biomembrane mimicking and paves a new path for material design in biomedical applications.

Porous Organic Polymer As Fillers for Fabrication of Defect-Free PIM-1 Based Mixed Matrix Membranes with Facilitating CO2-transfer Chain

Abstract:Considering both molecular sieving effect and compatibility of filler-polymer interface, the main challenges in the fabrication of excellent mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are the selection of fillers. Here, porous organic polymer (POP) is chosen as fillers to fabricate a series of novel PIM-1 based MMMs for CO2 separation. TPFC-based POPs showed highly selective CO2 adsorption capacity and good interfacial compatibility with PIM-1 matrix. Moreover, amine modified POPs in MMMs can provide specific transfer chains for facilitating CO2 molecules separation. As a result, the obtained PIM-TPFC-CH2NH2 MMM exhibited excellent CO2 permeability of 7730 barrer and selectivity of 45.9 and 36.4 for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 gas pairs, far beyond the 2008 Robeson upper bound and surpassed most reported state-of-the-art MMMs.

Abstract:Two kinds of biomembrane mimetic polymers P(MPC-co-SMA) and P(MPC-SMA-TSMA) were synthesized with acrylate monomers 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (M PC), stearyl methacrylate (SMA) and 3-(methacryloyloxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (TSMA) by free radical copolymerization in solution with AIBN as initiator. The phosphorylcholine containing copolymers were dip-coated on cover glasses. The hydrophilicity, stability and surface structure of the coatings were measured by dynamic contact angles (DCA) in water. It was found that the coating surfaces were amphiphilic. The P(MPC-SMA-TSMA) coating was more stable than the P(MPC-co-SMA) one in aqueous environment due to crosslinking and grafting. The biocompatibility of the coatings was evaluated by platelet adhesion and protein adsorption. The copolymer P(MPC-SMA-TSMA) can be simply coated on a surface to fabricate a stable biomimetic coating with excellent hemocompatibility.

Abstract:Chitosan-based porous organic-inorganic hybrid membranes supported by microfiltration nylon membranes were prepared, in which gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) was used as an inorganic source as well as crosslinking reagent. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) with different molecular weight and content was used as imprinting molecule for morphology control. In situ crosslinking of chitosan and simultaneous polymerization of GPTMS in PEG template environment endowed the hybrid membrane with specific characteristics. Distinct hybrid effect between chitosan (CS) and GPTMS was revealed by shifting in X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, decomposition in simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) testing. As manifested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the molecular weight and content of PEG had remarkable effect on the resulting surface morphology of the hybrid membrane and a given surface morphology could be obtained by extracting of the imprinted PEG molecular. Among three types of porogen used: PEG 400, PEG 4000 and PEG 20000, only PEG 20000 could result in a porous surface. Moreover, a special porous surface with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structure-in-structure pore fashion was obtained when content of PEG 20000 was controlled at 15%. Experimental results also showed that the hybrid membrane had low swelling ratio and high stability in acidic solution. After conveniently coordinated with copper ions, the porous metal chelating hybrid membrane could effectively adsorb the model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA). As expected, the hybrid membrane imprinted with 15% PEG 20000 had remarkably high copper ion binding and BSA adsorption capacity, which might result from the large surface area, high ligand density and suitable interconnected 3D hierarchical porous surface.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) offer in principle a robust, cost-efficient alternative to antibodies, but it is still a challenge to develop such materials for protein recognition. Here, we report the molecular imprinting of a functional polymeric hydrogel layer with lysozyme as the template in a two-step grafting procedure by a novel initiation approach on track-etched polyethylene terephthalate membrane surface. This is based on surface functionalization with aliphatic C-Br groups which can be used as an initiator for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and photo-initiated copolymerization. At first, the scaffold poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) was obtained through SI-ATRP of poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) and subsequent hydrolysis. Thereafter, it was assembled with the template to form a stable PMAA/lysozyme complex. In the second step, a polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel was synthesized via UV-initiated surface grafting/crosslinking copolymerization around the scaffold/protein complex. Finally, the template was eluted to yield the grafted hydrogel layer with binding sites having complementary size, shape and appropriate arrangement of the functional groups to rebind lysozyme. The selectivity of lysozyme recognition, relative to cytochrome C with a similar size and isoelectric point, was increased by optimization of the scaffold chain length, UV grafting/crosslinking time and the chemical crosslinking degree of the PAAm-based hydrogel. The feasibility for the development of protein MIP in a straightforward way by independent optimization of crucial parameters - structures of scaffold with functional groups and of the crosslinked hydrogel matrix - have been demonstrated.
Towards high-performance hybrid hydrophilic membranes: chemical anchoring of hydroxyl-rich nanoparticles on PVDF membranes via a silane coupling agent

Abstract:Physical blending with hydrophilic nanoparticles (NPs) is generally adopted to improve the performance of hydrophobic membranes. Stable immobilization of the NPs remains challenging due to the weak bonding. Covalent bonding is expected to overcome this problem. Herein, γ -methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (MPTS) was grafted onto PVDF membranes, affording a versatile materials platform to firmly anchor hydroxyl-rich nanomaterials (HRNs) (TiO 2 , SiO 2 , β -FeOOH-1, β -FeOOH-2, etc.) via a facile dehydration process. The stability of the resulting hybrid PVDF- g -PMPTS/HRN membranes is remarkably improved, as evidenced by their almost unchanged water contact angles even under ultrasonication for 30 min. The immobilization yield of HRNs, hydrophilicity, roughness and water flux of the membranes are enhanced with increasing graft degree of PMPTS. The resulting hybrid membranes exhibit much better water flux recovery ratio and BSA rejection ratio compared to the pristine PVDF membrane, owing to their excellent anchoring stability and outstanding hydrophilicity. This work provides a general effective chemical route to the construction of hybrid hydrophilic membranes with high performance.
Toward the Highly Ordered Lamellar Hybrid Membrane for Molecular Sieving by One-Pot Self-Assembly of Hybrid Hyperbranched Polymer

Abstract:Ordered lamellar hybrid membranes are of great interest, due to their application as functional materials, including molecular sieving, biosensors, optical devices, and drug, as well as gene deliveries, but their fabrication remains challenging because three critical issues regarding synthesis of regular nanosheets, interfacing, and their spatial distribution in a polymer matrix are difficult to address simultaneously. Here, we fabricated a well-defined hybrid lamellar membrane through one-pot self-assembly, whose structure consisted of alternating layers of hydrophilic hyperbranched poly(ether amine) (hPEA) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). The POSS-capped photosensitive hPEA initially formed ultrathin sandwich-like hybrid nanosheets (HNS) with a thickness of 5 +/- 0.5 nm in an aqueous solution through a living crystallization-driven self-assembly, which subsequently, generated a highly ordered lamellar hybrid membrane with a uniform layer of spacing through direct self-stacking by filtration. The resulting membrane acquired a well-defined lamellar structure, thereby providing an ideal model to study molecular diffusion in confined spaces. Also, it could be used for the separation of molecules of different sizes or charges in water solution and is capable of being efficiently, effectively, and economically (known as 3E) applied for the purification of products of methyl orange and fluorescein from their precursor mixtures. This one-pot assembly of the hybrid polymer provides a facile and essential alternative to fabricate highly ordered hybrid membranes.
Tethering Hydrophilic Polymer Brushes Onto PPESK Membranes Via Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was used to graft hydrophilic comb-like poly((poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate), or P(PEGMA), brushes from chloromethylated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (CMPPESK) membrane surfaces. Prior to ATRP, chloromethylation of PPESK was beforehand performed and the obtained CMPPESK was prepared into porous membranes by phase inversion process. It was demonstrated that the benzyl chloride groups on the CMPPESK membrane surface afforded effective macroinitiators to graft the well-defined polymer brushes. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the grafting of P(PEGMA) chains. Water contact angle measurements indicated that the introduction of P(PEGMA) graft chains promoted remarkably the surface hydrophilicity of PPESK membranes. The effects of P(PEGMA) immobilization on membrane morphology, permeability and fouling resistance were investigated. It was found that the comb-like P(PEGMA) grafts brought smaller pore diameters and higher solute rejections to PPESK membranes. The results of dynamic anti-fouling experiments showed the anti-fouling ability of the membranes was significantly improved after the grafting of P(PEGMA) brushes.

Abstract:The molecularly imprinted membrane has shown irreplaceable superiority in advanced water treatment, biochemical purification, and in most cases, pretreatment of environmental determinands. However, effective and controllable construction of imprinted sites in membrane-based interpenetrating pores is as yet the significant bottleneck. Herein, we proposed a thermally induced strategy on the polydopamine-embedded molecularly imprinted membrane (DEMIM) for enhanced selective separation of Ciprofloxacin (CIP). The porous sleeve was constructed with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), together with the integrated β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) for hydrophilicity and anti-fouling requirements. Based on the thermally induced operation, polydopamine (PDA) embedded in the membrane matrix acted as a secondary reaction platform, effectively improving the interpenetrating-bicontinuous porous morphology and enhancing the availability of imprinted sites in microchannels. The imprinting polymerization was carried out by the efficient thiol-ene Click reaction, which was investigated in depth by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The impressive relative separation factor (2.33–4.59) and permselectivity (9.50–12.50) indicated the superior availability of DEMIM for the selective separation. The remarkable regeneration performance (fluctuation in 8.4%∼10.8%) demonstrated the feasibility of the porous membrane-based sleeve for regeneration of molecular imprinting. The approach and methodologies achieved in this work will potentially promote the development of novel molecularly imprinted membranes for advanced applications.

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) developed from membrane separation technology and molecularly imprinting technology have shown great advantages in water treatment, drug extraction and biochemical separation. Inspired by superiority of core-shell structure onto nanomaterials, the mimetic-core-shell design on MIMs would possess both properties of substrate (core) and molecularly imprinted polymers (shell). In this work, a mimetic-core-shell structure was carried out on ciprofloxacin-imprinted membranes (CIMs) for the supplement of antifouling and high-selective surface. (i) Antifouling performance was enhanced based on β-cyclodextrin by forming the supramolecular envelope system with the substrate. (ii) Selectivity was provided by CFX-imprinted sites on the embedded secondary platform (polydopamine). As a result, impressive rebinding selectivity (αCFX/NFX=3.47, αCFX/EFX=3.91 and αCFX/OFX=5.42) and permselectivity (βNFX/CFX=1.57, βEFX/CFX=1.68 and βOFX/CFX=1.83) with stable regeneration performance were achieved on optimal CIMs (M4-CIMs). The structure-performance relationship of CIMs were explored by chemical and morphology analyzation. Visual-simulative method was included for a detail and in-depth investigation of sites formation and selective recognition mechanisms. Importantly, results from dead-end filtration of semi-practical samples reveals the potential availability of mimetic-core-shell CIMs for selective separation applications.

Abstract:The immobilization of membrane-bound molecules on organic-inorganic cholesteryl-succinyl silane (CSS) nanofibers is investigated. Fluorescent microscopy and a cell capture assay confirm the stable and functional immobilization of membrane-bound antibodies and imaging agents on the electrospun CSS nanofibers. An insert-and-tighten mechanism is proposed for the observed hydration-induced reduction in lipid nanofiber diameter, the immobilization of membrane-bound molecules, and the improved efficiency of cell capture by the functionalized CSS nanofibers over their film counterparts. The ability to stably and functionally immobilize membrane-bound molecules on the CSS nanofibers presents a promising method to functionalize lipid-based nanomaterials. Abstract:The spontaneous assembly of nanoscale building blocks into continuous semipermeable membranes is a key requirement for the structuration of synthetic protocells. Engineering the functionality and programmability of these building units provides a step toward more complex cell-like entities with adaptive membrane properties. Inspired by the central role of protein (lectin)-carbohydrate interactions in cellular recognition and adhesion, we fabricate semipermeable polysaccharide-polymer microcapsules (polysaccharidosomnes) with intrinsic lectin-binding properties. We employ amnphiphilic polysaccharide-polymer membrane building blocks endowed with intrinsic bio-orthogonal lectin-glycan recognition sites to facilitate the reversible noncovalent docking of functionalized polymer or zeolitic nanoparticles on the polysaccharidosomes. We show that the programmed attachment of enzyme-loaded nanoparticles gives rise to a membrane-gated spatially localized cascade reaction within the protocells due to the thermoresponsiveness of the polysaccharidosome membrane, and we demonstrate that extended closely packed networks are produced via reversible lectin-mediated adhesion between the protocells. Our results provide a step toward nanoscale engineering of bioinspired cell-like materials and could have longer-term applications in synthetic virology, protobiology, and microbiosensor and microbioreactor technologies.

Abstract:A novel method for the surface modification of a microporous polypropylene membrane by tethering phospholipid analogous polymers (PAPs) is given, which includes the photoinduced graft polymerization of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and the ring-opening reaction of grafted poly(DMAEMA) with 2-alkyloxy-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholanes. Five 2-alkyloxy-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholanes, containing octyloxy, dodecyloxy, tetradecyloxy, hexadecyloxy, and octadecyloxy groups in the molecular structure, were used to fabricate the PAP-modified polypropylene membranes. The attenuated total reflectance FT-IR spectra of the original, poly(DMAEMA)-grafted, and PAP-modified membranes confirmed the chemical changes on the membrane surface. Scanning electron microscope pictures showed that, compared with the original membrane, the surface porosities of poly(DMAEMA)-grafted and PAP-modified membranes were somewhat reduced. Water contact angles measured by the sessile drop method on PAP-modified membranes were slightly lower than that on the original polypropylene membrane, but higher than those on poly(DMAEMA)-grafted membranes with the exception of octyloxy-containing PAP-modified membranes. However, BSA adsorption experiments indicated that the five PAP-modified membranes had a much better protein-resistant property than the original polypropylene membrane and the poly(DMAEMA)grafted membranes. For hexadecyloxy- and octadecyloxy-containing PAP-modified membranes, almost no protein adsorption was observed when the grafting degree was above 6 wt %. It was also found that the platelet adhesion was remarkably suppressed on the PAP-modified membranes. All these results demonstrate that the described approach is an effective way to improve the surface biocompatibility for polymeric membranes.
Surface molecularly imprinted electrospun affinity membranes with multimodal pore structures for efficient separation of proteins

Abstract:Molecular imprinting is an important tool for generating synthetic receptors with specific recognition sites. The resulting artificial receptor has been extensively used in areas that require molecular recognition. Nevertheless, various imprinted materials synthesized using conventional imprinting protocols have low binding capacities and slow binding kinetics because of difficulty in extracting the original templates and high resistance to mass transfer. The combination of molecular imprinting and nanostructured materials is expected to overcome such difficulties. In this work, template molecules were attached onto the electrospun fibers and by using electrospun nanofibers and attached molecules as sacrificial templates, surface molecularly imprinted membranes with bi-, tri- or tetramodal pore structures were fabricated in the absence or presence of SiO2 nanoparticles in the molecular imprinting precursor. As a demonstration, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and hemoglobin from bovine blood (bHb) were chosen as template molecules and imprinted electrospun affinity membranes with multimodal pore structures were successfully fabricated for protein separation. Compared with the membrane with a bi- or trimodal pore structure, the tetramodal membrane, which consisted of tubule channels, imprinted nanocavities on the inner surface of tube wall, gaps between tubes and pores in the tube wall left by SiO2 nanoparticles, exhibited a very favorable recognition property and efficient separation toward the template protein molecules in aqueous medium. In a two-protein system, the tetramodal membrane has also shown a very high specific recognition for the template proteins over the non-template proteins. Dynamic binding tests and reusability tests further revealed that tetramodal porous membranes had excellent selectivity, faster binding kinetics and good regenerability. These results indicate that in conjugation with the surface molecular imprinting technique the use of electrospun fibers as sacrificial templates could be used as an efficient strategy for development of high performance affinity membrane materials.
Specific Recognition of Proteins and Peptides Via Controllable Oriented Surface Imprinting of Boronate Affinity-Anchored Epitopes

Abstract:Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are chemically synthesized materials mimicking the recognition of antibodies towards antigens. Epitope imprinting has been an effective strategy, making imprinting of proteins flexible to a great extent. However, so far there is apparently a lack of facile and versatile epitope imprinting approaches. Herein, we present a new method called controllable oriented surface imprinting of boronate affinity-anchored epitopes. In this method, a C-terminus nonapeptide epitope was glycated and anchored as a template onto a boronic acid-functionalized substrate, followed by controllable oriented surface imprinting via the polycondensation of multiple silylating reagents containing functionalities capable of interacting with the epitope. The developed imprinting approach allowed for precise control of the thickness of the imprinting layer through adjusting the imprinting time, generating excellent binding properties. This method was verified to be versatile and efficient. Thus, it could greatly facilitate the preparation of MIPs for specific recognition of proteins and peptides.

Abstract:Abstract Pore size uniformity is one of the most critical parameters in determining membrane separation performance. Recently, a novel type of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) has shown uniform pore size and high porosity. However, their brittle nature has prevented them from preparing robust membranes. Inspired by the skin-core architecture of spider silk that offers both high strength and high ductility, herein we report an electropolymerization process to prepare a CMP membrane from a rigid carbazole monomer, 2,2’,7,7’-tetra(carbazol-9-yl)-9,9’-spirobifluorene, inside a robust carbon nanotube scaffold. The obtained membranes showed superior mechanical strength and ductility, high surface area, and uniform pore size of approximately 1 nm. The superfast solvent transport and excellent molecular sieving well surpass the performance of most reported polymer membranes. Our method makes it possible to use rigid CMPs membranes in pressure-driven membrane processes, providing potential applications for this important category of polymer materials.
