Abstract:Main results of the authors’ recent analytical and numerical studies of the highest waves created by fast monohull ships and catamarans are summarized. Due to constructive interference among the divergent waves radiated by sources and sinks distributed over a ship hull surface, the highest waves created by a ship that advances at high speed in calm water are found well inside the cusps of the Kelvin wake. These highest ship waves are much shorter than the waves at the cusps, and are also significantly shorter than the ship length. The ray angles where the highest ship waves are found, and their wavelengths, are mostly kinematic flow features that are only weakly influenced by the shape of the ship hull. Moreover, the highest-waves ray angles and wavelengths are determined via simple analytical relations in terms of the Froude number and, for a catamaran, the distance between the twin hulls of the catamaran. These simple general results about the highest waves created by a fast ship widely expand the classical results obtained by Kelvin in 1887 for a ship modeled as a 1-point wavemaker.
