Abstract:There are some questions of stabilizing some red clay foundations with only cement.The method of utilizing cement and additional flyash is considered to stabilize red clay.Through the laboratory experiment compressive strength of red clay sample with different mixing ratio of cement and flyash is tested at different ages,and the reinforced mechanism of cement and flyash on red clay is analyzed and probed.The results show that the strength of stabilized soil is increased with the increase of cement and flyash mixing ratio and curing age.Furthermore,cement and flyash affect the sample strength differently at early,middle and later curing ages.

Abstract:Fly ash, a byproduct of coal-fired thermal power stations, is among the most intricate artificially produced substances. The challenge of its suitable disposal has emerged as both an ecological issue and a squandering of potentially resources. Fly ash has good pozzolanic activity and contains reactive Al and Si components, it has the potential to dissolve under alkaline conditions to form a dense green gel, i.e. alkali activated binder. But, the widespread implementation of fly ash from different sources in generation of products is constrained by the heterogeneity of raw-material supply. In this work, physical performances, chemical-compositions, microstructures, element distribution, crystal structure, chemical-bonds, glassy content, as well as existence form of glassy-phases of eleven fly ashes sourced from different province in China were investigated via FESEM-EDS, XPS, XRD-Rietveld, FTIR, TEM NMR analysis. Then, a reactivity index of fly ash (R value) that concerned the effects of both initial state, particle morphology, internal composition was proposed. R value has been demonstrated to exhibit high predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.81–0.93) for predicting the strengths development of alkali activated products prepared with different activator modules, especially at early period. A further eleven literature datasets were utilized to validated against the accuracy of the predictions. R value facilitates an effective evaluation of fly ashes' fitness for fabricating high-strength alkali activated composites.

Abstract:<p>Efficient activation of fly ash is necessary for its further applications in zeolite synthesis and useful element extraction. However, traditional fusion activation is energy-intensive and complicated. Herein, a simple, highly efficient and green activation method of fly ash was presented. The activation degree of fly ash could be 80% by adding 1.0 mol/L NaOH solution at 200 °C. The fly ash was fully activated at 350 °C. The mechanism and kinetics of hydrothermal activation of fly ash were further studied. The outmost amorphous glass body of the fly ash was firstly activated. The fly ash was activated from the surface of the glass microspheres to the center gradually. The mullite in the center of the glass microspheres was finally activated. Therefore, the morphology and crystal phase of the microspheres in the fly ash can be controlled by adjusting the activation conditions. The activation process can be divided into two stages under mild conditions. The hydrothermal activation process was controlled by internal diffusion at initial stage and chemical reaction at later stage. Under more severe conditions, the glass microspheres in fly ash were rapidly activated and converted into flower-liked microcrystal clusters. This work provides a progressive strategy of conversion and utilization of fly ash for its practical application in valuable element extraction and zeolite synthesis.</p>

Abstract:On the basis of analyzing the characteristics of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) ash residue a broad overview is given of the recent advances both at home and abroad in the comprehensive utilization of CFB fly ash. Owing to its low carbon content and the presence of a certain hydraulic activity the CFB ash residue can be used directly for the fabrication of cement or building materials. However, the high carbon content and poor hydraulic activity of the fly ash make it necessary to develop some relevant technologies prior to using it. The latter include the pelleting of fly ash for its return burning, the direct sending back of fly ash, and its sending back for desulfurization following its hydration, its use as a raw material for the manufacture of cement and also as soil ameliorative agents, etc.

Abstract:Coal fly ash, an industrial by-product, is derived from coal combustion in thermal power plants. It is one of the most complex anthropogenic materials, and its improper disposal has become an environmental concern and resulted in a waste of recoverable resources. There is a pressing and ongoing need to develop new recycling methods for coal fly ash. The present review first describes the generation, physicochemical properties and hazards of coal fly ash at the global level, and then focuses on its current and potential applications, including use in the soil amelioration, construction industry, ceramic industry, catalysis, depth separation, zeolite synthesis, etc. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of these applications, the mode of fly ash utilization worldwide and directions for future research are considered.
MSWI fly ash as alkaline cementitious material admixture

Abstract:In this work,the chemical and mineral compositions of the MSWI fly ash and the possibility to use the pretreated MSWI fly ash as an admixture of alkaline cementitious material were investigated.The results showed that MSWI fly ash was mainly composed of clay minerals and the phenomenon of swelling were observed when the raw fly ash was added as an admixture.The expansivity of 15.7% could be achieved within 24 h with the addition of 30% fly ash to the test blocks,and the compressive strength of 28 d was only 12.4 MPa;after the thermal pretreatment.The optimized activation of the fly ash could be obtained at 900 ℃,the compressive strength of 28 d could reach 46.0 MPa with the same content of fly ash,and the phenomenon of swelling no longer existed.The leaching toxicity of fly ash test showed that the product met the China Standard.

Abstract:The research progress of different technologies of fly ash for CO2 capture, utilization, and storage at home and abroad was summarized, and the research opportunities were discussed. Fly ash could mineralize, capture, and store CO2 through direct dry, semi dry, wet, and indirect methods, reducing the leaching of heavy metals in fly ash while mineralizing CO2. The mineralized fly ash was more suitable for making concrete additives because it could effectively reduce the content of free CaO and MgO. Fly ash could also be made into activated carbon, zeolite, porous silica, and other products for physical adsorption and capture of CO2. The type of products depended mainly on the composition and physical/chemical properties of fly ash. In terms of CO2 utilization, fly ash could not only expand the utilization of building materials but also be made as catalysts or catalyst carriers required for various chemical processes of CO2 and new materials such as pseudo boehmite. The proposal of "double carbon" in China and the physical/chemical characteristics of fly ash from coal-fired power plants provide a new method for comprehensive utilization of fly ash.

Abstract:Circulating fluidized bed (CFB)-based coal burning technology is a type of clean coal combustion technology. Owing to its characteristics of low temperature combustion and desulfurization in furnace, the CFB fly ash is quite different from ordinary fly ash. Based on the comprehensive understanding of physical and chemical characteristics of CFB fly ash, this review summarizes the research progress of the application of CFB fly ash in Portland cement, magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) cement, solid-waste–based cementitious material (SWCM), concrete, geopolymer, artificial aggregate, and other building materials. The study shows that CFB fly ash can improve the early physical and mechanical properties and reduce the drying shrinkage properties for cementitious materials. Its unique chemical composition endows it with good application performance in the MOS cement, geopolymer, and SWCM. However, unfavorable characteristics of CFB fly ash, such as loose and porous structure, self-hardening behavior, and expansibility greatly hinder its practical applications in building materials. Therefore, some measures, such as addition of rational water-reducing agent, ultrafine grinding, mixing of ordinary fly ash, controlling the dosage of CFB fly ash, and water-cement ratio, must be taken to improve the negative influence of CFB fly ash on the building materials, in order to expand its application range. This article summarizes the application and research status of CFB fly ash in building materials, aiming at further promoting the research studies on CFB fly ash resource utilization in building materials and improving the efficiency of CFB fly ash resource utilization.

Abstract:In China,incineration becomes more and more popular to treat municipal solid waste,during which a lot of fly ash is generated.As hazardous waste,fly ash needs further treatment before landfill or reuse.This paper analyzes the physical and chemical characteristics of fly ash and discusses the issues from conventional treatment process including cement stabilization,chemicals stabilization,acidic solvent extraction and melting.When fly ash is directly used for cement production,concrete and road pavements,it will cause new environmental issues due to heavy metals and salts that fly ash contains.Waterwashing can remove most of the soluble salts and the concentrations of heavy metals in leachate from baked water-washed fly ash will be much lower than that from baked original fly ash.The technology of washing-and-baking has a good promising prospect for fly ash utilization.

Abstract:This study focused on the utilization of fly ash as the primary raw material in the development of new fly ash shotcrete materials. Through the manipulation of the amount of fly ash added and the type and quantity of additives, the properties of the fly ash shotcrete materials were investigated through testing their curing time, compressive strength, and microstructure at various curing ages. Fly ash has emerged as a prominent solid waste in China, leading to various environmental concerns and posing a threat to the health of living organisms, including humans. To enhance the industrial applicability of this waste material, a novel approach has been proposed wherein sand is replaced with fly ash as the primary raw material for wall grouting of coal mine roadways. To address the issue of low compressive strength and to improve the properties of fly ash shotcrete materials, a method employing an alkali activator to stimulate the chemical activity of fly ash has been put forward. The long‐term effectiveness of the shotcrete material has been evaluated using compressive strength testing and scanning electron microscopy testing methods. The impact of replacing sand with fly ash on the compressive strength of shotcrete and the activation effect of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), NaOH, and Na2SiO3 on fly ash shotcrete have been studied. The results indicate that the compressive strength of fly ash shotcrete shows optimal improvement when the content of Na2SO4 is 3%. The ideal ratio of cement to fly ash is 1:3. Therefore, incorporating an appropriate amount of alkaline activator could effectively address the compressive strength issues of fly ash shotcrete materials.

Abstract:China's coal-fired power plants produce about 600 million tons fly ash annually, which has caused severe economic and environmental problems.This paper first describes briefly the production and utilization status of coal fly ash in China.Then it analyzes the main challenges to the fly ash utilization in China due to the conflict between the huge amount production of fly ash and the depressed consumption of fly ash, as well as the increasing driving forces in the environmental protection.Subsequently, the new developments of fly ash utilization in China, including valuable elements extraction, geopolymer production, fly ash-based ceramics synthesis and soil desertification control are introduced in detail.
Activation behavior of the novel CO 2 foaming agent for mining on fly ash

Abstract:Although there have been many research results on the chemical activation of fly ash (FA) as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in cementitious materials. However, there is a lack of research on the use of CO 2 foaming agent (sodium bicarbonate and potassium aluminum sulfate) to activate fly ash. In this experiment, the effects of CO 2 foaming agent, sodium bicarbonate, and potassium aluminum sulfate on the activity of FA mixed paste were investigated. The mechanism of FA activation by activator was revealed by selective acid dissolution, QXRD, BSE-EDS statistical analysis, and quantitative analysis of TGA. The results showed that the remaining fly ash amounts of MG, SBG, and PASG after 28 days were 17.5%, 25.9%, and 43.3% lower than those of the control group, respectively. In addition, potassium aluminium sulphate promoted hydration to generate more CH to activate the FA. Sodium bicarbonate promoted hydration and produces more CH to activate FA by generating nano-CaCO 3 . The mixture of sodium bicarbonate and potassium aluminum sulfate took advantage of both nano-CaCO 3 and potassium aluminum sulfate to promote silicate hydration to provide CH. As a result, the two synergistically activate FA. The above results show that CO 2 foaming agents can be used not only as foaming agents to prepare lightweight materials, but also as chemical activators to activate solid waste. This will have a high practical application value.

Abstract:Fly ash is waste which severely affected the healthy of people. To utilize it, the mineralogy properties must be studied. By using multielement chemical analysis, the principle chemical composition was analyzed. By using X-ray, electron probe, spectrum analysis testing methods, the cenospheres which are the main component of fly ash surface morphology and the differences of the components were mainly studied. The research indicated that the fly ash is a high quality material which can be used in the engineering construction.

Abstract:Expansive clays are found in many countries worldwide, and they exhibit inherent volume change during the seasonal moisture variation causing cracks, heaves, and damages to the overlying pavements. Chemical stabilisation is one of the most used approaches to treat the expansive clay subgrades. Cement, Lime and Fly ash are the most commonly used stabilisers, in which fly is cheaper and a by-product obtained from the coal power plant. This paper reviews fly ash stabilisation on various clay types, including low plasticity clays, high plasticity clays, silty clays, organic clays, and peats. The review begins with the properties of fly ash, followed by the characteristics of fly ash stabilised subgrades. The micro-level mechanism, physical, mechanical, and hydraulic characteristics of stabilised pavements are presented graphically for the Class C, and F fly ashes. The micro-level studies reveal that the pozzolanic reaction is stronger than the cation exchange during the fly ash stabilisation. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR) and resilient modulus (Mr) increased with the fly ash addition and curing time for most soft soils except peat clays. Based on the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics, using 15% class C fly ash with 7 days of curing is recommended for optimum performance. Although few research studies confirm that the leachate limit of stabilised soil is within the acceptable limit, further studies are required to investigate the uptake of heavy metals and other certain carcinogenic contaminants. This study will provide key information for researchers and Engineers on the selection of fly ash stabilisation measures for expansive subgrades.

Abstract:As global climate issues become increasingly pronounced, human society is confronting unprecedented environmental challenges. The escalating anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions have intensified the global warming process, resulting in a cascade of environmental degradation issues. CO 2 mineralization stands out as a highly promising approach for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to mitigate global warming. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state of accelerated CO 2 mineralization using typical industrial solid waste, "fly ash," as a raw material. The article commences by introducing the physicochemical properties of fly ash, and various typical CO 2 mineralization kinetic models. Subsequently, it provides a comprehensive evaluation of accelerated CO 2 mineralization pathways, encompassing reactor design (reactor types, operational parameter design, etc.), fly ash activation pretreatment (milling, calcination, etc.), and chemical additives (organic amines, amino acid salts, sodium salts, ammonium salts, etc.). A summarization and analysis of the integrated utilization of products obtained through different mineralization pathways are presented. Finally, the paper discusses the scale-up applications and potential challenges faced by reported fly ash carbonation, emphasizing that research on accelerated solid waste carbonation is an inevitable process for the industrial application of this technology. We hope that this review will contribute to advancing the industrialization of CO 2 sequestration through mineralization of solid waste.

Abstract:Through combustion experiments in an electricheated laboratoryscale fluidized bed combustor by using flyash slurry with high carbon content and coalwater mixture as fuels, the inflence of some factors, such as moisture content, mixed ratio of coal, bed temperature, and retention time etc., upon agglomeration behavior of flyash slurry and coalwater mixture has been studied, and the fluidized bed agglomeration combustion effects being investigated. Results of experiments show that the fluidized bed agglomeration combustion using abovementioned fuels is able to effectively decrease the carbon content in fly ash, providing a practical way for beneficially using unburnt combustibles in fly ash as a resourse.
