Abstract:The simple storage of ammonia combined with the tendency to liberate hydrogen without carbon dioxide emissions has made ammonia breakdown popular among the research community in recent years. This review article has discussed the current advances in ammonia breakdown technology for hydrogen generation, focusing on new materials and mechanical designs for catalysis. Moreover, it would help to update the knowledge about the catalytic reaction processes and emphasize the benefits and drawbacks of each strategy. Furthermore, the significance of discovering a cost-effective metal catalyst with better efficiency and higher reliability is also debated. This article may serve as a fundamental resource to scale up information about the catalytic production of hydrogen from ammonia.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the key challenges in ammonia decomposition for hydrogen production. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Efficiency and Cost-effectiveness of Catalysts**: The ammonia decomposition reaction requires efficient catalysts to lower the reaction temperature and increase the conversion rate, and these catalysts need to have high stability and reliability. However, the currently widely used ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts, although effective, are expensive and have limited supply. Therefore, finding cost-effective and better-performing alternative catalysts has become a research focus. 2. **Innovation in Catalytic Materials and Mechanical Design**: The paper explores the application of new materials and mechanical designs in the ammonia decomposition reaction, aiming to improve catalytic efficiency and controllability of the reaction process. This includes research on different metal catalysts (such as cobalt, chromium, iron, molybdenum, nickel, palladium, platinum, etc.) and the design and optimization of bimetallic catalysts. 3. **Mechanism and Kinetics of Ammonia Decomposition Reaction**: Understanding the detailed mechanism and kinetic process of the ammonia decomposition reaction is crucial for optimizing catalyst design and reaction conditions. The paper summarizes recent research achievements in this field, emphasizing the roles of different metals and their combinations in the catalytic process. 4. **Practical Application of Ammonia Decomposition Technology**: As a potential clean hydrogen source, the practical application of ammonia decomposition faces many challenges, such as storage and transportation issues. The paper discusses how to overcome these challenges by improving catalysts and reaction systems, promoting the large-scale application of ammonia decomposition technology. In summary, the main goal of the paper is to propose methods for improving catalyst design and reaction conditions through a review of current research progress in ammonia decomposition technology, in order to achieve efficient, low-cost, and sustainable hydrogen production.
