Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) perovskite (including pure-2D and quasi-2D) is formed by introducing large-group ammonium halides into conventional bulk perovskite. In the past twenty years, 2D perovskite materials were widely developed with the enriched species and advanced physical-knowledge in material characteristics as well as optoelectronic device applications. To review achievments in 2D perovskite, the fundamental mechanism and properties of 2D perovskite are introduced to offer insight into device performance. Moreover, the preparation methods of 2D perovskite films are summarized and compared. The latest successful applications of the 2D perovskite in the solar cells and light-emitting diodes fields, especially the advanced stability of 2D perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) and the efficient 2D perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), are also achieved. Furthermore, the challenges and outlook of 2D perovskite materials are proposed.

Abstract:As an important category of perovskite materials, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites are attracting increasing research attention these days. Their possibility of combining high performance and stability for perovskite based optoelectronic devices has triggered a new wave of research. This review mainly focuses on the application of 2D perovskite materials for solar cells. We start with a brief introduction of 2D perovskite structures and their unique properties. The recent progress in 2D perovskite solar cells is summarized in three aspects according to the existing forms of the perovskite materials in the devices. In the end, a short outlook with our opinion is given to indicate the possible development trend for this kind of perovskite material.

Abstract:Due to the superior optoelectronic properties of halide perovskites, it has attracted wide attentions during the past decade, especially in the field of energy. When the dimension of halide perovskites reduces, novel properties will appear, such as large exciton binding energy, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and enlarged band gap. This way, low dimensional halide perovskites, especially two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites, have attracted intensive attention in recent years and showed promising applications, including photodetectors, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and solar cells. Various methods were then developed for the synthesis of 2D halide perovskites and studying the exciting optoelectronic properties. The optoelectronic devices based on 2D halide perovskites showed excellent performance, particularly high sensitive photodetection, high electroluminescence with sharp emission peak, and environmental stable solar cells with decent power conversion efficiency. In this case, 2D halide perovskites become superstar materials in perovskites research area. In this review, we summarize the recent progresses in the synthesis and energy applications of 2D halide perovskites, and challenges and future directions in the field.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, research on organic‐inorganic lead halide two‐dimensional (2D) perovskites has been blossoming. 2D perovskites have completely different layered structures from three‐dimensional perovskites, with interleaved organic and inorganic layers, leading to 2D perovskite materials being more stable and possessing anisotropic electrical transport. Meanwhile, 2D organic‐inorganic lead halide perovskite single crystals are receiving increasing attention because of their remarkable properties, such as long charge carrier lifetime, low defect density, and high photoluminescence quantum yield, increasing their potential for optoelectronic applications. Previously, a series of material systems based 2D perovskites single crystals has been synthesized and applied in various device applications. Abstract:Halide perovskite materials have attracted worldwide attention in the photovoltaic area due to the rapid improvement in efficiency, from less than 4% in 2009 to 26.1% in 2023 with only a nanometer lever photo-active layer. Meanwhile, this nova star found applications in many other areas, such as light emitting, sensor, etc. This review started with the fundamentals of physics and chemistry behind the excellent performance of halide perovskite materials for photovoltaic/light emitting and the methods for preparing them. Then, it described the basic principles for solar cells and light emitting devices. It summarized the strategies including nanotechnology to improve the performance and the application of halide perovskite materials in these two areas: from structure–property relation to how each component in the devices affects the overall performance. Moreover, this review listed the challenges for the future applications of halide perovskite materials.

Abstract:In the past decade, metal‐halide perovskites have attracted increasing attention in optoelectronics, due to their superior optoelectronic properties. However, inherent instabilities of conventional three‐dimensional (3D) perovskites over moisture, heat, and light remain a severe challenge before the realization of commercial application of metal‐halide perovskites. Interestingly, when the dimensions of metal‐halide perovskites are reduced to two dimensions (2D), many of the novel properties will arise, such as enlarged bandgap, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and large exciton binding energy. As a result, 2D metal‐halide perovskite‐based optoelectronic devices display excellent performance, particularly as ambient stable solar cells with excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE), high‐performance light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) with sharp emission peak, and high‐sensitive photodetectors. In this review, we first introduce the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of 2D perovskites. Then, the 2D perovskite‐based solar cells, LEDs, and photodetectors are discussed. Finally, a brief overview of the opportunities and challenges for 2D perovskite optoelectronics is presented.

Abstract:The certified power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells is gradually approaching that of crystalline silicon solar cells. Accordingly, considering the advantages of improved thermal stability and environmental friendliness of lead-free all-inorganic halide double perovskites (LFAIHDPs), they have attracted considerable attention in optoelectronic applications. Herein, we review the recent progress on LFAIHDPs via heterovalent substitution of the lead element, including their geometrical and electronic structures, synthetic processes, and applications in optoelectronic devices. Many experimental and theoretical efforts have been devoted to investigating the thermal stability, defects, and optoelectronic properties of lead-free all-inorganic halide double perovskite materials, which have been presented. Lastly, we discuss the application of machine learning strategies to predict novel perovskite structures with excellent thermal stability and optoelectronic performance.

Abstract:Optoelectronic devices are key building blocks for sustainable energy, imaging applications, and optical communications in modern society. Two-dimensional materials and perovskites have been considered promising candidates in this research area due to their fascinating material properties. Despite the significant progress achieved in the past decades, challenges still remain to further improve the performance of devices based on 2D materials or perovskites and to solve stability issues for their reliability. Recently, a novel concept of 2D material/perovskite heterostructure has demonstrated remarkable achievements by taking advantage of both materials. The diverse fabrication techniques and large families of 2D materials and perovskites open up great opportunities for structure modification, interface engineering, and composition tuning in state-of-the-art optoelectronics. In this review, we present comprehensive information on the synthesis methods, material properties of 2D materials and perovskites, and the research progress of optoelectronic devices, particularly solar cells and photodetectors which are based on 2D materials, perovskites, and 2D material/perovskite heterostructures with future perspectives.

This is seen in the rapid rise of power conversion efficiency, which is currently over 23%. It has also stimulated a widespread application of halide metal perovskites in other fields, such as light‐emitting diodes, field‐effect transistors, detectors, and lasers. Despite the fascinating characteristics of the halide metal perovskites, the presence of toxic lead (Pb) in their chemical composition is regarded as one of the major limiting factors preventing their commercialization. Addressing the toxicity issues in these compounds by a careful and strategic replacement of Pb<sup>2+</sup> with other nontoxic candidate elements represents a promising direction to fabricate lead‐free optoelectronic devices. Such attempts yield a halide double perovskite structure which allows flexibility for various compositional adjustments. Here, the authors present the current progress and setbacks in crystal structures, materials preparation, optoelectronic properties, stability, and photovoltaic applications of lead‐free halide double perovskite compounds. Prospective research directions to improve the optoelectronic properties of existing materials are given that may help in the discovery of new lead‐free halide double perovskites.</p>

Abstract:Research on lead-halide perovskites for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications represents a rapidly developing field of optoelectronics on account of their remarkable optoelectronic properties, including large absorption coefficient, low-temperature solution processability, tunable bandgap, high-carrier mobility, and so on. Unfortunately, the toxicity of metal Pb and intrinsic instability of lead-halide perovskites are still big obstacles for their practical applications and future commercial development. Therefore, various lead-free eco-friendly perovskites and their derivatives have been alternatively explored to overcome the above hurdles. In this review, the preparation methods, structures, optical characteristics, and stability of lead-free metal halide perovskites are summarized according to different dimensions at molecular level. Furthermore, we emphatically introduce the optoelectronic properties of low-dimensional lead-free halides with broadband emission originated from the self-trapped excitons. Then, we give a brief description of preliminary exploration results and significant achievements of optically excited white light-emitting devices (WLEDs) and electrically excited multi-color LEDs. Finally, this review was finished with a critical perspective into the potential challenging issues of this rapidly evolving fields.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) materials have been widely developed recently in material characteristics with advanced optical and electrical properties, and they have been extensively studied as candidates for the next generation of optoelectronic devices. This review will mainly focus on the preparation methods and the light emitting applications of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), 2D black phosphorene (BP) and 2D perovskites. The review will first introduce the preparation methods for TMDs and BP. Due to the variations of band structure, exciton binding energies and light-matter interaction in TMDs and BP, the different light emitting devices (LEDs) designs based on TMDs and BP will be discussed and summarized. Then the review will turn the focus to 2D perovskites, starting with a description of the preparation methods for the different structural perovskites. In order to review and summarize the achievements of 2D perovskites-based LEDs, the high efficiency perovskites LEDs are discussed. Finally, the review will present challenges, opportunities, and outlook for the future development of 2D materials-based light emitting applications.

Abstract:Abstract Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites have attracted extraordinary attention due to their superior semiconducting properties and have emerged as one of the most promising materials for next-generation light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The outstanding optical properties originate from their structural characteristics. In particular, the inherent quantum-well structure endows them with a large exciton binding energy due to the strong dielectric- and quantum-confinement effects; the corresponding energy transfer among different n -value species thus results in high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), particularly at low excitation intensities. The review herein presents an overview of the inherent properties of quasi-2D perovskite materials, the corresponding energy transfer and spectral tunability methodologies for thin films, as well as their application in high-performance LEDs. We then summarize the challenges and potential research directions towards developing high-performance and stable quasi-2D PeLEDs. The review thus provides a systematic and timely summary for the community to deepen the understanding of quasi-2D perovskite materials and resulting LED devices.

Abstract:In the growing list of 2D semiconductors as potential successors to silicon in future devices, metal-halide perovskites have recently joined the family. Unlike other conversional 2D covalent semiconductors such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, etc., 2D perovskites are ionic materials, affording many distinct properties of their own, including high photoluminescence quantum efficiency, balanced large exciton binding energy and oscillator strength, and long carrier diffusion length. These unique properties make 2D perovskites potential candidates for optoelectronic and photonic devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, nanolasers, waveguides, modulators, and so on, which represent a relatively new but exciting and rapidly expanding area of research. In this Review, the recent advances in emerging 2D metal-halide perovskites and their applications in the fields of optoelectronics and photonics are summarized and insights into the future direction of these fields are offered.

Abstract:<p>Lead‐based halide perovskites have received great attention in light‐emitting applications due to their excellent properties, including high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), tunable emission wavelength, and facile solution preparation. In spite of excellent characteristics, the presence of toxic element lead directly obstructs their further commercial development. Hence, exploiting lead‐free halide perovskite materials with superior properties is urgent and necessary. In this review, the deep‐seated reasons that benefit light emission for halide perovskites, which help to develop lead‐free halide perovskites with excellent performance, are first emphasized. Recent advances in lead‐free halide perovskite materials (single crystals, thin films, and nanocrystals with different dimensionalities) from synthesis, crystal structures, optical and optoelectronic properties to applications are then systematically summarized. In particular, phosphor‐converted LEDs and electroluminescent LEDs using lead‐free halide perovskites are fully examined. Ultimately, based on current development of lead‐free halide perovskites, the future directions of lead‐free halide perovskites in terms of materials and light‐emitting devices are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites can be readily synthesized, they exhibit tunable physical properties and excellent performance, and they are heavily studied optoelectronic materials. Compared to the typical three-dimensional perovskites, morphological-level one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures enable charge transport and photon propagation with low exciton binding energies and long charge-carrier diffusion lengths, while molecular-level 1D nanostructures exhibit good compositional and structural flexibilities, highly tunable bandgaps, strong quantum confinement effects, and excellent ambient stabilities. The 1D natures of these emerging halide perovskites enhance the performance of optoelectronic devices. Herein, we highlight recent progress realized in the syntheses and characterizations of both morphological- and molecular-level 1D halide perovskites with tunable structures, compositions, and properties, as well as their photovoltaic, light-emission, and photodetection applications. In addition, current challenges, future prospects, and promising research directions are discussed to provide guidance in advancing the field of 1D perovskites.

Abstract:With outstanding photovoltaic properties, metal halide perovskite materials have marked great achievements in the field of next-generation solar cells; however, there still remain some challenges that hinder the commercialization progress regarding device efficiency and stability. Introducing novel materials with enhanced properties in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is a promising strategy to overcome these difficulties. Two-dimensional materials (e.g., graphene and its derivatives, transition-metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorus) have been widely investigated and applied in electronics and optoelectronics owing to their preeminent properties with the unique van der Waals structure. Herein recent advancements in the incorporation of 2D materials into PSCs are summarized. Three key points including optimizing perovskite crystallization, promoting charge transport, and passivating of defects for the enhanced efficiency and stability of PSCs by 2D materials are discussed. In the end, some perspectives on tackling the challenges for the PSCs and the 2D material coordination for higher device efficiency and stability are outlined.
