Abstract:From lithium-ion batteries to high-temperature superconductors, oxide materials have been widely used in electronic devices. However, demands of future technologies require materials beyond oxides, as anion chemistries distinct from oxygen can expand the palette of mechanisms and phenomena, to achieve superior functionalities. Examples include nitride-based wide bandgap semiconductors and halide perovskite solar cells, with MAPbBr3 being a representation revolutionizing photovoltaics research. Here, we demonstrate magnetoelectric behaviour in quasi-two-dimensional halides (K,Rb)3Mn2Cl7 through simultaneous thermal control of electric and magnetic polarizations by exploiting a polar-to-antipolar displacive transition. Additionally, our calculations indicate a possible polarization switching path including a strong magnetoelectric coupling, indicating halides can be excellent platforms to design future multiferroic and ferroelectric devices. We expect our findings to broaden the exploration of multiferroics to non-oxide materials and open access to novel mechanisms, beyond conventional electric/magnetic control, for coupling ferroic orders.

Abstract:The combined effect of electronic correlation and strong spin-orbit-coupling(SOC) can give rise to a variety of exotic quantum phases. Double perovskites provide a simple structure to study the spin-orbit-lattice entangled states. In this thesis, focusing on the 5d osmate double perovskite system, we conduct a combination of work including theoretical model simulation, first-principle calculation, and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments to understand the fundamental physical properties of this material system.

Abstract:Time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is pivotal for materials' optical, magnetic, topological, and transport properties. Chiral phonons, characterized by atoms rotating unidirectionally around their equilibrium positions, generate dynamic lattice structures that break TRS. Here, we report that coherent chiral phonons, driven by circularly polarized terahertz light pulses, polarize the paramagnetic spins in cerium fluoride in a manner similar to that of a quasi-static magnetic field on the order of 1 tesla. Through time-resolved Faraday rotation and Kerr ellipticity, we found that the transient magnetization is only excited by pulses resonant with phonons, proportional to the angular momentum of the phonons, and growing with magnetic susceptibility at cryogenic temperatures. The observation quantitatively agrees with our spin-phonon coupling model and may enable new routes to investigating ultrafast magnetism, energy-efficient spintronics, and nonequilibrium phases of matter with broken TRS.

Abstract:Magnetic materials with noncoplanar magnetic structures can show unusual physical properties driven by nontrivial topology. Topologically-active states are often multi- q structures, which are challenging to stabilize in models and to identify in materials. Here, we use inelastic neutron-scattering experiments to show that the insulating double perovskites Ba 2 YRuO 6 and Ba 2 LuRuO 6 host a noncoplanar 3- q structure on the face-centered cubic lattice. Quantitative analysis of our neutron-scattering data reveals that these 3- q states are stabilized by biquadratic interactions. Our study identifies double perovskites as a highly promising class of materials to realize topological magnetism, elucidates the stabilization mechanism of the 3- q state in these materials, and establishes neutron spectroscopy on powder samples as a valuable technique to distinguish multi- q from single- q states, facilitating the discovery of topologically-nontrivial magnetic materials.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites have emerged as promising semiconductors for high-performance photovoltaics, light-emitting devices as well as quantum information technologies. In this review, we highlight the magneto-optical effects in these materials from both fundamental research and practical application perspectives. We summarize the experimental results measured for basic physical quantities and the assignment of various spectral peaks using the magneto-optical spectroscopy. These results provide a solid foundation underlying the excellent photo-electronic properties of lead halide perovskites. Additionally, we provide an overview of carrier spin precession and its hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spin bath in response to the applied magnetic field, which is essential for developing perovskite-based spintronic devices. We also illustrate the magnetic-field effects in optoelectronic devices, aiming at providing instructions for performance optimization. Finally, we discuss several challenging research directions towards a comprehensive understanding of the perovskite family and their potential applications in quantum physics, which might be accessed with the magneto-optical techniques. Overall, this review highlights the intriguing possibilities for lead halide perovskites in magneto-optical research and technology, and provides insights for future investigations to advance this promising field.

Abstract:Perovskite semiconductor nanocrystals of lead halides exhibit excellent electronic and optical properties that are suitable for many optoelectronic applications. In this report, we investigate the underlying mechanism of the optical response of the material by probing coherent interaction between the exciton and lattice vibration by two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. Coherent exciton-phonon coupling has been observed with time-domain oscillations in the dynamics of signals related to either ground or excited electronic states. Furthermore, the spectra of the coherent phonon derived from the dynamics of biexciton formation have larger amplitudes for higher frequency modes, which is attributed to the phonon bottleneck effect. Moreover, the composition-dependent coherent coupling between the exciton and lattice vibration in mixed halide samples reveals a critical role played by the anharmonicity and fluctuation of lattice vibration in the excited-state dynamics of perovskite nanocrystals.

Abstract:The generation and manipulation of spin-polarized electrons are the basis of spintronic applications. Spin injection from a ferromagnetic surface or heterojunction to a semiconductor adjacent layer is often used to create spin-polarized carriers; however, for halide perovskites, due to the mismatch of lattice parameters with most ferromagnets at room temperature, this spin injection is challenging. In this study, we synthesize all-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 surrounded by Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. It is found that this nanocomposite shows both magnetization and magnetic field-induced circularly polarized photoluminescence at room temperature. Specifically, with the attachment of Fe3O4 nanoparticles closely on the surface of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, both the degree of circular polarization and g-factor enhanced by 3.5 times compared with that of pure CsPbBr3. The phenomenon should be due to the formation of exciton magnetic polaron through the coupling of the magnetic aligned nanoparticles with the excitonic state of the host semiconductor in the external magnetic field. The effective spin injection provides a method of controlling the excitonic spin polarization of all-inorganic halide perovskites for spintronic applications.

Abstract:Materials combining the optoelectronic functionalities of semiconductors with control of the spin degree of freedom are highly sought after for the advancement of quantum technology devices. Here, we report the paramagnetic Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid perovskite Mn:(PEA)2PbI4 (PEA = phenethylammonium) in which the interaction of isolated Mn2+ ions with magnetically brightened excitons leads to circularly polarized photoluminescence. Using a combination of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and magneto-optical experiments, we find that the Brillouin-shaped polarization curve of the photoluminescence follows the magnetization of the material. This indicates coupling between localized manganese magnetic moments and exciton spins via a magnetic proximity effect. The saturation polarization of 15% at 4 K and 6 T indicates a highly imbalanced spin population and demonstrates that manganese doping enables efficient control of excitonic spin states in Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites. Our finding constitutes the first example of polarization control in magnetically doped hybrid perovskites and will stimulate research on this highly tuneable material platform that promises tailored interactions between magnetic moments and electronic states.

Abstract:Chiral lead halide perovskites (LHPs) exhibit pronounced absorption or transmission circular dichroism (CD), which can be efficiently tuned by externally applied magnetic fields, giving rise to magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). To date, a systematic understanding of natural optical activities (NOAs) and magneto-optical activities (MOAs) in LHPs on an equal footing is still lacking. In this work, a joint experimental and theoretical study is carried out systematically in order to establish a unified picture of CD and MCD via a gyration vector for highly crystalline and solution-processable chiral LHPs. Experimentally, MCD strengths that appear near photoabsorption band edges of the chiral LHPs can be enhanced remarkably with increasing fields up to ±1.6 T. The experimental results can be well accounted for by a theory based on excitonic states, material chirality, and field dependence of the gyration vector. Importantly, numerical values of the exciton’s g-factor and chirality-induced spin–orbit coupling (SOC) strength can be extracted. Our work suggests that the magnetic field can be an important tool to elucidate the microscopic origin of NOA in chiral LHPs.

Abstract:Multiferroic materials coupled ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) and ferroelectric ordering in a single phase. Hexagonal YMnO3 is the most studied member of rare earth manganites multiferroic materials, due to its fascinating underlying physics and broad application prospect in magnetic storage media and spintronics. We used Raman spectroscopy to characterize the vibration modes in hexagonal YMnO3 single crystal grown by optical floating-zone method. The Raman spectroscopies were analyzed in detail in the temperature range from 78 to 313 K. A vibration mode (E-2 at 107 cm(-1)) was first discovered experimentally, indicating the high quality of YMnO3 single crystals. The vibration modes of atoms were confirmed by polarized Raman spectrum analysis.

Abstract:Magnetic-field-enhanced spin-polarized electronic/optical properties in semiconductors are crucial for fabricating various spintronic devices. However, this spin polarization is governed by weak spin exchange interactions and easily randomized by thermal fluctuations; therefore, it is only produced at cryogenic temperatures, which severely limits the applications. Herein, a room-temperature intrinsic magnetic field effect (MFE) on excitonic photoluminescence is achieved in CsPbX3:Mn (X = Cl, Br) perovskite nanocrystals. Through moderate Mn doping, the MFE is enhanced by exciton–Mn interactions, and through partial Br substitution, the MFE is stabilized at room temperature by exciton orbital ordering. The orbital ordering significantly enhances the g-factor difference between electrons and holes, which is evidenced by a parallel orbit–orbit interaction among excitons generated by circular polarized laser excitation. This study provides a clear avenue for engineering spintronic materials based on orbital interactions in perovskites.

Abstract:Quadratic magneto-optical (MO) effects can be utilized to investigate the spin order in antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials; however, the previously reported studies were all limited in antiferromagnets with collinear AFM order. Here, we develop a phenomenological theory to investigate the quadratic MO effects in hexagonal non-collinear AFM crystals with triangular spin structures. Based on the permittivity tensor up to the second-order in magnetization, we derive the formula to describe the quadratic MO responses and perform numerical calculations to obtain the MO rotation angle for different AFM spin configurations and sample orientations. For the sample with its spin plane lying perpendicular to the surface plane, we have revealed the emergence of quadratic MO response, which exhibits a strong dependence on the light incident angle. The MO rotation angle shows an approximately sinusoidal variation with a periodicity of 180° when the sample is rotated around its surface normal. The size of the MO response and its deviation from the sinusoidal form are analyzed for different values of the second-order permittivity tensor elements. This study provides important insights into the non-collinear AFM spin-induced quadratic MO effect, which may be used as a guidance for optical detections of the non-collinear AFM order, and, in particular, the ultrafast spin dynamics using the optical pump–probe technique.

Abstract:All-inorganic metal halides perovskites (CsPbX 3 , X = Br or Cl) show strong excitonic and spin-orbital coupling effects, underpinning spin-selective excitonic transitions and therefore exhibiting great promise for spintronics and quantum-optics applications. Here we report spin-dependent optical nonlinearities in CsPbX 3 single crystals by using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Many-body interactions between spin-polarized excitons act like a pseudo-magnetic field and thus lift the degeneracy of spin states resulting in a photoinduced circular dichroism. Such spontaneous spin splitting between “spin-up” and “spin-down” excitons can be several tens of milli-electron volts under intense excitations. The exciton spin relaxation time is ~20 picoseconds at very low pump fluence, the longest reported in the metal halides perovskites family at room temperature. The dominant spin-flip mechanism is attributed to the electron-hole exchange interactions. Our results provide essential understandings towards realizing practical spintronics applications of perovskite semiconductors.
Axial–Equatorial Halide Ordering in Layered Hybrid Perovskites from Isotropic–Anisotropic 207Pb NMR

Abstract:Bandgap-tuneable mixed-halide 3D perovskites are of interest for multi-junction solar cells, but suffer from photoinduced spatial halide segregation. Mixed-halide 2D perovskites are more resistant to halide segregation and are promising coatings for 3D perovskite solar cells. The properties of mixed-halide compositions depend on the local halide distribution, which is challenging to study at the level of single octahedra. In particular, it has been suggested that there is a preference for occupation of the distinct axial and equatorial halide sites in mixed-halide 2D perovskites. 207Pb NMR can be used to probe the atomic-scale structure of lead–halide materials, but although the isotropic 207Pb shift is sensitive to halide stoichiometry, it cannot distinguish configurational isomers. Here, we use 2D isotropic–anisotropic correlation 207Pb NMR and relativistic DFT calculations to distinguish the [PbX6] configurations in mixed iodide–bromide 3D FAPb(Br1−xIx)3 perovskites and 2D BA2Pb(Br1−xIx)4 perovskites based on formamidinium (FA+) and butylammonium (BA+), respectively. We find that iodide preferentially occupies the axial site in BA-based 2D perovskites, which may explain the suppressed halide mobility.

Coupling of structure and magnetism to spin splitting in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites are famous for the diversity of their chemical compositions, phases and phase transitions, and associated physical properties. We use a combination of experimental and computational techniques to reveal strong coupling between structure, magnetism, and spin splitting in a representative of the largest family of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites: the formates. With the help of first-principles simulations, we find spin splitting in both conduction and valence bands of [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, induced by spin-orbit interactions, which can reach up to 14~meV. Our magnetic measurements reveal that this material exhibits canted antiferromagnetism below 15.5 K. The direction of the associated antiferromagnetic order parameter is strongly coupled with the spin splitting already in the centrosymmetric phase, allowing for the creation and annihilation of spin splitting through the application of a magnetic field. Furthermore, the structural phase transition into experimentally observed polar Pna2$_1$ phase completely changes the aforementioned spin splitting and its coupling to magnetic degrees of freedom. This reveals that in [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, the structure and magnetism are strongly coupled to spin splitting in a way that allows for its manipulation through both magnetic and electric fields. As an example, for a given point inside the Brillouin zone of centrosymmetric Pnma phase of [NH$_2$NH$_3$]Co(HCOO)$_3$, spin splitting can be turned on/off by aligning the antiferromagnetic vector along certain crystallographic directions or through inducing a polar phase by the application of an electric field. We believe that our findings offer an important step toward fundamental understanding and practical applications of materials with coupled properties.
