Abstract:In this paper a computational methodology on impact dynamics of the flexible multibody system is presented. First, the floating frame of reference approach and nodal coordinates on the basis of finite element formulation are used to describe the kinematics of planar deformable bodies. According to the kinematic description of contact conditions, the contact constraint equations of planar flexible bodies are derived. Based on the varying topology technique the impact dynamic equations for a planar multibody system are established. Then the initial conditions of the equations in each contact stage are determined according to the discontinuity theory in continuum mechanics. The experiments between the aluminum rods are performed to check the correctness of the proposed method. Through the comparison between the numerical and experimental results the proposed method is validated. Experimental results also show that the impulse momentum method cannot accurately predict the complex impact dynamic phenomena and the continuous model may lead to a serious error when used to simulate the impact problems with significant wave propagation effects.

Abstract:There is an increasing number of discontinuous dynamics problems, such as contact and impact, in the engineering field. The known modelling theories and methods, which are used to solve the continuous dynamics of flexible multibody systems, are not able to solve those problems or to solve those problems perfectly. In this paper, an appending constraint method was proposed to solve the contact/impact dynamics of flexible multibody system based on the idea of topology variable. The impact experiment of flexible bars was designed to verify the validity of the proposed method. At last, a multi-variable method was proposed to solve the multi-scale problems of time and space when the global simulation of the discontinuous dynamics of flexible multibody systems was carried out, and the computational efficiency of the global simulation of the discontinuous dynamics of flexible multibody systems was improved by using this method.

Abstract:To solve the contact/impact problem of flexible bodies in arbitrary shape, the finite element method is widely used to discretize the contact bodies. In the finite element method, two contact models are mainly used to compute the contact force, i.e., penalty function method and additional constraint method, which are different in constraint imposition strategy. The penalty function method regards the contact effect as a force function of local penetration at the contact point and its rate. This method has gained significant popularity because it does not bring extra dimensions to the dynamic equations and does not need to solve constraint equations either. However, as the non-penetration constraint is not precisely satisfied in the contact process when using the penalty function method, the accuracy of the numerical simulation depends on the choice of the penalty parameter. On the other hand, the additional constraint method can strictly satisfy the contact constraint condition by introducing the Lagrange multipliers into the dynamic equations, but the method poses some numerical difficulties due to the additional effort required to solve the multipliers. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of the two contact methods, the interactive mode method is proposed. This method divides the whole model into local static module and main dynamics module. The static module establishes a local finite element model of the contact region to compute the contact force, and the main dynamics module is used to obtain the kinematic variables of the whole body. In the simulation, the two modules are coupled by exchanging displacements and forces in each time step. In the current integration step, the main dynamics module provides the displacements of the boundaries of the local contact region at first, the values are transferred to the local finite model to compute the contact force next, and then the contact force is fed back to the dynamics module for the calculation of the next step. The proposed method combines the advantages of both the additional constraint method and the penalty function method, in which not only the artificial selection of penalty parameter is avoided, but also the non-penetration constraint of local contact region is satisfied and the numerical solution is convenient. The validity of the proposed method is verified by the comparison between simulation results and experimental results of a rod-plate impact case. Furthermore, a multi-point impact problem of a slider sliding in the gap chute is presented to validate the proposed method of dealing with the general impact problem.

Abstract:The efficiency and accuracy are two most concerned issues in the modeling and simulation of multi-body systems involving contact and impact. This paper proposed a formulation based on the component mode synthesis method for planar contact problems of flexible multi-body systems. A flexible body is divided into two parts: a contact zone and an un-contact zone. For the un-contact zone, by using the fixed-interface substructure method as reference, a few low-order modal coordinates are used to replace the nodal coordinates of the nodes, and meanwhile, the nodal coordinates of the local impact region are kept unchanged, therefore the total degrees of freedom (DOFs) are greatly cut down and the computational cost of the simulation is significantly reduced. By using additional constraint method, the impact constraint equations and kinematic constraint equations are derived, and the Lagrange equations of the first kind of flexible multi-body system are obtained. The impact of an elastic beam with a fixed half disk is simulated to verify the efficiency and accuracy of this method.

Abstract:The impact dynamics of a flexible multibody system is investigated. By using a partition method, the system is divided into two parts, the local impact region and the region away from the impact. The two parts are connected by specific boundary conditions, and the system after partition is equivalent to the original system. According to the rigid-flexible coupling dynamic theory of multibody system, system’s rigid-flexible coupling dynamic equations without impact are derived. A local impulse method for establishing the initial impact conditions is proposed. It satisfies the compatibility con-ditions for contact constraints and the actual physical situation of the impact process of flexible bodies. Based on the contact constraint method, system’s impact dynamic equa-tions are derived in a differential-algebraic form. The contact/separation criterion and the algorithm are given. An impact dynamic simulation is given. The results show that system’s dynamic behaviors including the energy, the deformations, the displacements, and the impact force during the impact process change dramatically. The impact makes great effects on the global dynamics of the system during and after impact.

Abstract:The impact problem of a flexible multibody system is a non-smooth, high-transient, and strong-nonlinear dynamic process with variable boundary. How to model the contact/impact process accurately and efficiently is one of the main difficulties in many engineering applications. The numerical approaches being used widely in impact analysis are mainly from two fields: multibody system dynamics (MBS) and computational solid mechanics (CSM). Approaches based on MBS provide a more efficient yet less accurate analysis of the contact/impact problems, while approaches based on CSM are well suited for particularly high accuracy needs, yet require very high computational effort. To bridge the gap between accuracy and efficiency in the dynamic simulation of a flexible multibody system with contacts/impacts, a partition method is presented considering that the contact body is divided into two parts, an impact region and a non-impact region. The impact region is modeled using the finite element method to guarantee the local accuracy, while the non-impact region is modeled using the modal reduction approach to raise the global efficiency. A three-dimensional rod-plate impact experiment is designed and performed to validate the numerical results. The principle for how to partition the contact bodies is proposed: the maximum radius of the impact region can be estimated by an analytical method, and the modal truncation orders of the non-impact region can be estimated by the highest frequency of the signal measured. The simulation results using the presented method are in good agreement with the experimental results. It shows that this method is an effective formulation considering both accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, a more complicated multibody impact problem of a crank slider mechanism is investigated to strengthen this conclusion.

Abstract:The modeling of a flexible multibody system with elastic impact was investigated.Based on Hertz impact theory,dynamic variational equation of each flexible body was established,in which the geometric nonlinearity is taken into account.By using kinematic constraint equations and reduced coordinate formulation,equations of flexible double pendulum were derived.An experiment of the impact of a flexible pendulum with a fixed rigid body was carried out to verify the correctness of the modeling method,and then a flexible double pendulum was simulated to obtain the time history of the impact force.The result shows the sudden change of angular velocity and the transverse deformation during the course of impact wave propagation.

Abstract:Using a substructure synthesis method this paper studies the longitudinal compressive impact of a flexible bar with a rigid body. The crucial variable affecting the validity of the method is derived theoretically. By computational simulation tests, excellent agreement has been found between the solution of this model and the exact solution when the variable is chosen suitably. Considering both the computational efficiency and the accuracy of solutions obtained on the model in different engineering problems, several optimum values of the variable are suggested.
A New Subregion Mesh Method for the Investigation of the Elastic-Plastic Impact in Flexible Multibody Systems

Abstract:Impact processes between flexible bodies often lead to local stress concentration and wave propagation of high frequency. Therefore, the modeling of flexible multibody systems involving impact should consider the local plastic deformation and the strict requirements of the spatial discretization. Owing to the nonlinearity of the stiffness matrix, the reduction of the element number is extremely important. For the contact-impact problem, since different regions have different requirements regarding the element size, a new subregion mesh method is proposed to reduce the number of the unnecessary elements. A dynamic model for flexible multibody systems with elastic-plastic contact impact is established based on a floating frame of reference formulation and complete Lagrange incremental nonlinear finite-element method to investigate the effect of the elastic-plastic deformation as well as spatial discretization.Experiments on the impact between two bodies are carried out to validate the correctness of the elastic-plastic model.The proposed formulation is applied to a slider-crank system with elastic-plastic impact.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient formulation based on the Lagrangian method is presented to investigate the contact–impact problems of flexible multi-body systems. Generally, the penalty method and the Hertz contact law are the most commonly used methods in engineering applications. However, these methods are highly dependent on various non-physical parameters, which have great effects on the simulation results. Moreover, a tremendous number of degrees of freedom in the contact–impact problems will influence the numerical efficiency significantly. With the consideration of these two problems, a formulation combining the component mode synthesis method and the Lagrangian method is presented to investigate the contact–impact problems in flexible multi-body system numerically. Meanwhile, the finite element meshing laws of the contact bodies will be studied preliminarily. A numerical example with experimental verification will certify the reliability of the presented formulation in contact–impact analysis. Furthermore, a series of numerical investigations explain how great the influence of the finite element meshing has on the simulation results. Finally the limitations of the element size in different regions are summarized to satisfy both the accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:A review of recent developments in the impact dynamics of the multibody systems is presented, including recent advances in modeling theory of the impact dynamics,numerical algorithms and experiments. The modeling theories are divided into three groups:the impulse-momentum method,the continuous impact force model and the finite method based on continuum mechanics,the advantages and limitations of which are compared in respect of impact process description and numerical behavior.The latest developments of impact dynamics experiments in the field of non-contact measurement are reviewed,and relevant experimental studies are summarized for validating the above mentioned methods.Then some new discoveries in experiments are shown,and the new challenges in front of the impact dynamics of multibody systems are proposed based on the demand from engineering practice.

Abstract:A brief review about several phases and present status of flexible multi-body dynamics was given and the existing modeling methods of rigid-flexible coupling dynamics were summarized.Five indexes,including scientific index,general index,identifiable index,compatible index and efficient index,were proposed to evaluate the existed modeling methods.It shows that the existed modeling methods can not satisfy the actual needs of engineering application and new modeling method which satisfies all the evaluating indexes should be investigated.The research targets including modeling theory,computational methods and experiments were suggested for the rigid-flexible coupling dynamics of the flexible multi-body systems.

Abstract:Flexible multibody system dynamics (MSD) is one of the hot spots and difficulties in modern mechanics. It provides a powerful theoretical tool and technical support for dynamic performance evaluation and optimization design of a large number of complex systems in many engineering fields, such as machinery, aviation, aerospace, weapon, robot and biological engineering. How to find an efficient accurate dynamics modeling method and its stable reliable numerical solving algorithm are the two core problems of flexible MSD. In this paper, the research status of modeling methods of flexible MSD in recent years is summarized first, including the selection of reference frames, the flexible body's kinematics descriptions, the deductions of dynamics equation, the model reduction techniques and the modeling methods of the contact/collision, uncertainty and multi-field coupling problems. Then, numerical solution technologies and their latest developments of flexible MSD are discussed in detail. Finally, the future research directions of modeling and numerical computation of flexible MSD are briefly prospected.

Abstract:Multi-variable method is proposed to deal with flexible multi-body systems with contact/impact. With this method, the floating reference frame technique is combined with the nonlinear finite element technique to raise the solving efficiency of the whole system and the computation accuracy in the local contact/impact region. The motion of the non-contact/impact region is described with the floating reference frame technique and the modal reduction approach is used to raise the solving efficiency. The nonlinear finite element technique is employed for describing the nonlinear and plastic deformation in the local contact/impact region. Some numerical examples are presented with the proposed method. In addition, experimental investigations with a Laser-Doppler vibrometer are presented. The numerical results agree well with the experimental ones.

Abstract:Based on additional contact constraint method, the form of dynamic equation with and without impact is unified. According to impact detection, automatic change of topological model is realized. Following the principle of no penetration between objects, contact force is calculated. Through the simulation with impact occurred many times, from the view of accuracy and efficiency, the additional contact constraint method and LS-DYNA penalty function method are contrasted.

Abstract:Convention.al modeling methods for dynamics of flexible multibody systemshave been widely believed that dynamic equations by using methods are unavoidably linearized prematurely in deformation coordinates, which results in loss of dynamic stiffening terms in the equations. This paper presents a multi-flexible-bodydynamics formulation incorporating a recently developed theory based on nonlinearexpression of deformation fields over a flexible body undergoing large motion accompanied by small vibrations. The deformation fields are described by second ordernon-linear form of deformation coordinates, and equations of motion including dynamic stiffening terms are derived by means of Kane's method. Simulation resultsof a rotating flexible body, involving stiffening during spinnup motion, demonstratethe validity and generality of the theory presented in this paper.

Abstract:The present study offers a regularized approach for multi-link flexible manipulator arms with frictional impacts. The complex risks of global dynamics simulation, which involve nonlinear frictional impact, stick–slip, and foreshortening deformation, as well as multi-scale numerical problems, were implemented. The system is described as an assembly of n$$n$$ flexible links connected by n$$n$$ rotary joints. The stretching, bending, and the torsional deformations of the flexible links were considered in addition to the flexibility and mass of the joint. The introduction of a contact force potential energy approach transformed the non-differentiable functions of the normal and tangential frictions into differentiable ones, thereby generating Lagrange equations for the general recursive formulation of the systems. A numerical simulation for the double pendulum and spatial manipulator arms collision with targets was generated, thereby allowing the calculation of the frequent switching between the stick/sliding and forward/backward sliding. Several normal contact and friction models were adopted, and their corresponding results were analyzed. The generated ordinary differential equations of the proposed smoothed algorithm were solved using explicit solvers to verify any improvements in the global computational efficiency of the frictional collision dynamics for the flexible manipulator arms.

An Enhanced Multi-Point Dynamics Methodology for Collision and Contact Problem

Abstract:The general methodologies for collision and contact problems of a multibody system often artificially divide the movements of the objects into the rigid displacements and contact deformations. Both the parts of the movements are often analyzed independently, which should be simultaneously processed in nature. Therefore, this article proposes an enhanced methodology to unify the rigid displacements and the contact elastic deformations of a collision system. The rigid displacements accompanying flexible deformations in collision are expressed as the displacements of a number of equivalent points of the colliding bodies. This method converts the collision problem into the collisions between the points within a multi-point system, and can therefore precisely model the real contact forces and deformations of the system. Numerical simulations for the collision-contact problems are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
