Abstract:For a walking robot, detecting the contact force of the manipulator plays an important role in adapting to the unstructured environment or performing tasks at the disaster site. In this paper we describes a method that enables the six-legged robot Octopus II to detect the force exerted on its foot tip without any force sensor installed nearby. To realize this indirect measurement, the general idea is using motor current as the input, which varies in proportion to the output torque of the motor, to compute the force exerted to the foot tip. In this method, the direct kinematics model of the robot leg is established. The force Jacobian is derived. Experiments are designed and carried out to validate the method.
