Abstract:The design of efficient and nonprecious electrocatalysts towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extremely essential for a wide range of renewable energy technologies but remains a grand challenge. Herein, a novel hybrid composite constructed from Co9S8/Co-doped ZnS (Zno(0.8)Co(0.2)S) nanorods with the atomic-level coupled nanointerface rooted in porous carbon polyhedra (Co9S8/Zn0.8Co0.2S@C) have been fabricated and investigated as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for OER. The composite catalyst can afford a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low overpotential of only 292 mV and a small Tafel slope of similar to 52 mV decade(-1), which are superior to the state-of-the-art IrO2/C and most reported Co-based catalysts. Experimental and computational studies reveal an electronic coupling between Co9S8 and Zn0.8Co0.2S that can facilitate the electron injection from the electrode and transport to the active site, and thus generates a favorable local coordination environment and greatly enhances the OER process. In Situ Construction of Porous Hierarchical (ni 3-X Fe X )fen/ni Heterojunctions Toward Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:As a choke point in water electrolysis, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) suffers from the severe electrode polarization and large overpotential. Herein, the porous hierarchical hetero-(Ni3-xFex)FeN/Ni catalysts are in situ constructed for the efficient electrocatalytic OER. X-ray absorption fine structure characterizations reveal the strong Ni-Fe bimetallic interaction in (Ni3-xFex)FeN/Ni. Theoretical study indicates the heterojunction and bimetallic interaction decrease the free-energy change for the rate-limiting step of the OER and the overpotential thereof. In addition, the high conductivity and porous hierarchical morphology favor the electron transfer, electrolyte access and O2 release. Consequently, the optimized catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 223 mV at 10 mA·cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 68 mV·dec-1, and a high stability. The excellent performance of the optimized catalyst is also demonstrated by the overall water electrolysis with a low working voltage and high Faradaic efficiency. Moreover, the correlation between the structure and performance is well established by the experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations, which confirms the origin of the OER activity from the surface metal oxyhydroxide in situ generated upon applying the current. This study suggests a promising approach to the advanced OER electrocatalysts for practical applications by constructing the porous hierarchical metal-compound/metal heterojunctions.
Stable Iron Hydroxide Nanosheets@Cobalt-Metal-Organic-Framework Heterostructure for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution.

Abstract:Most studies are devoted to the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as templates to construct desirable electrocatalysts in situ by high-temperature pyrolysis. The emergence of heterostructures invokes new opportunities to use the full potential of pristine MOFs as efficient catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a MOF surface-reaction strategy is developed to synthesize MOF-based heterostructures without pyrolysis. Uniform Fe(OH)(3) nanosheets are grown controllably on the Co-MOF-74 surface by a fast "phenol-Fe" reaction that takes advantage of the hydroxyl sites in Co-MOF-74. The resulting Fe(OH)(3)@Co-MOF-74 heterostructure delivers an excellent performance in the OER with a low overpotential of 292 mV at 10 mA cm(-2). Notably, the introduction of Fe can improve the intrinsic activity of the original Co atom significantly. The turnover frequency in Fe(OH)(3)@Co-MOF-74 (1.209 s(-1)) is more than 25 times higher than that in Co-MOF-74 (0.048 s(-1)). This work presents a fresh concept for the fundamental design of advanced pure-MOF-based heterostructures and, thereby, provides a new avenue for the fabrication of other energy-conversion and -storage materials.
Unveiling the Enhancement of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Activity in Ru-Fe2O3/CoS Heterojunction Catalysts

Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to meet the practical demand for water splitting. In this study, an effective approach is proposed that simultaneously enhances interfacial interaction and catalytic activity by modifying Fe2O3/CoS heterojunction using Ru doping strategy to construct an efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution catalyst. The unique morphology of Ru doped Fe2O3 (Ru-Fe2O3) nanoring decorated by CoS nanoparticles ensures a large active surface area and a high number of active sites. The designed Ru-Fe2O3/CoS catalyst achieves a low OER overpotential (264 mV) at 10 mA cm-2 and demonstrates exceptional stability even at high current density of 100 mA cm-2, maintaining its performance for an impressive duration of 90 h. The catalytic performance of this Ru-Fe2O3/CoS catalyst surpasses that of other iron-based oxide catalysts and even outperforms the state-of-the-art RuO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation as well as experimental in situ characterization confirm that the introduction of Ru atoms can enhance the interfacial electron interaction, accelerating the electron transfer, and serve as highly active sites reducing the energy barrier for rate determination step. This work provides an efficient strategy to reveal the enhancement of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution activity of heterojunction catalysts by doping engineering.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 into value-added chemicals has been envisioned as a promising strategy to alleviate the issue of increasing CO 2 emissions. However, the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as the anodic reaction, typically consumes approximately 90% of the electricity input, necessitating the development of an efficient OER for energy-saving purposes. Herein, we developed a unique heterostructure of multi-double (bi)-shelled Co-based spheres via a facile template-free method, in which each bi-shelled structure is composed of Co 9 Se 8 /Co 9 S 8 /CoO (Co-S-Se) with a symmetric configuration. These heterogeneous nanospheres possess both sufficient heterointerfaces and a high density of active sites and exhibit excellent OER activity in alkaline media with a low overpotential of 226 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 46.5 mV dec −1 , and long-term durability over 15 h. As a proof and concept, when coupled with a cathodic CO 2 reduction reaction, the electrochemical performance of Pd nanosheets (NSs) for CO 2 reduction can be significantly enhanced in terms of product selectivity and energy input. Our study might provide insight into the development of efficient OER electrocatalysts for practical CO 2 reduction reactions.

Abstract:There is a pressing requirement for developing high-efficiency non-noble metal electrocatalysts in oxygen evolution reactions (OER), where transition metal sulfides are considered to be promising electrocatalysts for the OER in alkaline medium. Herein, we report the outstanding OER performance of Co9S8@CoS2 heterojunctions synthesized by hydrogen etched CoS2, where the optimized heterojunction shows a low η 50 of 396 mV and a small Tafel slope of 181.61 mV dec-1. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of this heterostructure is attributed to the interface electronic effect. Importantly, the post-stage characterization results indicate that the Co9S8@CoS2 heterostructure exhibits a dynamic reconfiguration during the OER with the formation of CoOOH in situ, and thus exhibits a superior electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a four-electron–proton coupling process with a high kinetic energy barrier, which affects the overall efficiency of water splitting. Rational construction of specific interfaces and optimization of electron interactions can effectively promote the kinetic behavior of OER. Herein, ultrathin FeOOH nanosheets were loaded on Co9S8 nanorods by hydrothermal method to construct heterogeneous structures (FeOOH-Co9S8/NF), and the modulation of catalytic activity by structural changes in the phase interface region was investigated. FeOOH-Co9S8/NF showed excellent performance as an OER catalyst, requiring an overpotential of only 215 mV to reach 100 mA cm−2. The rich heterogeneous interface can optimize the coordination environment of the Co site by redistributing the interfacial charge to obtain the appropriate chemisorption strength of oxygen-containing intermediates. This paper explores the relationship between interfacial electronic structure changes and catalyst performance enhancement, and provides an experimental basis for further practicalization of OER catalysts.

Abstract:Structural engineering and compositional controlling are extensively applied in rationally designing and fabricating advanced freestanding electrocatalysts. The key relationship between the spatial distribution of components and enhanced electrocatalysis performance still needs further elaborate elucidation. Here, CeO2 substrate supported CoS1.97 (CeO2-CoS1.97) and CoS1.97 with CeO2 surface decorated (CoS1.97-CeO2) materials are constructed to comprehensively investigate the origin of spatial architectures for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). CeO2-CoS1.97 exhibits a low overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) due to the stable heterostructure and faster mass transfer. Meanwhile, CoS1.97-CeO2 has a smaller Tafel slope of 49 mV dec(-1) through enhanced adsorption of OH-, fast electron transfer, and in situ formation of Co(IV)O-2 species under the OER condition. Furthermore, operando spectroscopic characterizations combined with theoretical calculations demonstrate that spatial architectures play a distinguished role in modulating the electronic structure and promoting the reconstruction from sulfide to oxyhydroxide toward higher chemical valence. The findings highlight spatial architectures and surface reconstruction in designing advanced electrocatalytic materials.
Construction of a Three-Phase MnS2/Co4S3/Ni3S2 Heterostructure for Boosting Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:The rational construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a critical role in energy conversion systems. Designing heterostructures is a common and effective strategy to improve the performance of electrocatalysts. In this paper, an MnS2/Co4S3/Ni3S2 heterostructure was synthesized on Ni foam using a one-step vulcanization method. It provides a modified electronic structure and plentiful three-phase heterogeneous interfaces that can effectively enrich the active sites and accelerate electron transfer, thereby improving the OER activity. Thanks to the heterostructure, the MnS2/Co4S3/Ni3S2 exhibits a low overpotential of 265 and 304 mV for the OER to reach current densities of 50 and 100 mA/cm2, respectively. Furthermore, the surface reconstruction of MnS2/Co4S3/Ni3S2 has been investigated, which revealed the formation of metal hydr(oxy)oxides evolved during the OER process. This work provides a facile strategy for constructing three-phase heterostructures, shedding light on the development of high-performance, nonprecious metal-based OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:It has been extensively researched that oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions involves dynamic surface restructuring. In particular, the development and design of sulfide/oxide pre-catalyst can reasonably adjust the composition and structure after surface reconstruction, which is very important for oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, a simple two-step hydrothermal method was used to achieve in situ S leaching and doping by precipitation-dissolution equilibrium, inducing the composition change and structure reconstruction of CoFe oxides. In addition, the cross-linked nanosheet structure generated in situ widely exposes the active area, and the crystal/amorphous interface accelerates the charge and mass transfer efficiency. The structurally transformed FeOOH and CoOOH showed excellent OER activity, with overpotentials of 299 and 322.2 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 , significantly superior to one-step or uncured catalysts. Low-cost iron based materials combined with simple methods can be easily mass-produced. This provides an opportunity for the effective design of heterogeneous surface reconfigurable electrocatalysts for practical water electrolysis.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a necessary procedure in various devices including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries but required a higher potential to improve oxygen evolution efficiency due to its slow reaction kinetics. In order to solve this problem, a heterostructured electrocatalyst (Co3O4@FeOx/CC) is synthesized by deposition of iron oxides (FeOx) on carbon cloth (CC) via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD), then growth of the cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanosheet arrays. The deposition cycle of FeOx on the CC strongly influences the in-situ growth and distribution of Co3O4 nanosheets and electronic conductivity of the electrocatalyst. Owing to the high accessible and electroactive areas and improved electrical conductivity, the free-standing electrode of Co3O4@FeOx/CC with 100 deposition cycles of FeOx exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER with a low overpotential of 314.0 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 29.2 mV dec−1 in alkaline solution, which is much better than that of Co3O4/CC (448 mV), and even commercial RuO2 (380 mV). This design and optimization strategy shows a promising way to synthesize ideally designed catalytic architectures for application in energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Facile preparation of low-cost electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is significant but remains a big challenge. Herein, a novel and facile strategy for transforming of intrinsic non-stoichiometric ultrathin Co5(O9.48H8.52)NO3 nanosheets into oxygen-vacancy enriched Co3O4/CoOOH heterostructure nanosheets for efficient OER has been developed. The as-synthesized Co3O4/CoOOH heterostructure nanosheets displayed excellent OER performances, showing an extremely low overpotential of 260 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2, a relatively small Tafel slope of 52 mV dec-1, and long-term durability of at least 20 h. This work provides a new way for the production of oxygen vacancy on metal (oxy)hydroxide nanosheets through electric-field assisted in situ transformation of non-stoichiometric metal oxyhydroxides nanosheets.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with sluggish kinetics is the key half-cell reaction for several sustainable energy systems, such as electrochemical water splitting, fuel cells, and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Two-dimensional transition-metal hydroxides have good prospects for the OER. Herein, 2D hierarchical FeLDH(FeCo)/Co(OH)2 (LDH=layered double hydroxide) arrays were fabricated by growing 2D-ZIF-67 (ZIF=zeolitic imidazolate framework) on carbon cloth, transformation of 2D-ZIF-67 into Co(OH)2 , and electrodeposition of FeLDH(FeCo) on Co(OH)2 at ambient temperature. The optimized hierarchical catalyst exhibits high OER activity that requires a small overpotential of only 242 mV to drive 10 mA cm-2 (279 mV for 100 mA cm-2 ) and prolonged durability for 100 h at 20 mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH. The FeLDH(FeCo)/Co(OH)2 interfaces are observed to be the electrocatalytically active centers for the OER. The interfaces contribute to accelerating the OER kinetics owing to fast transfer of intermediate oxygen species. Furthermore, the FeCo alloy promotes electron transfer among the newly formed interfaces related to CoOOH in the OER process, which leads to improved durability. This work gives insight into the design and synthesis of hierarchical bimetallic hydroxide arrays with high OER activity and durability, as well as understanding of the origin of the OER promotion by metals and metal hydroxides.
Realizing Efficient Oxygen Evolution at Low Overpotential via Dopant-induced Interfacial Coupling Enhancement Effect

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting remains a long way from large-scale practical application due to the fact that the catalytic efficiency cannot satisfy the requirement, and thus reasonable design catalyst is particularly essential. Herein, a heteroatom-doped heterogeneous interfacial catalyst (Fe-CoN/CoS 2 ) has been successfully synthesized by nitridation and sulfidation process for water electrolysis. Strikingly, an ultralow OER overpotential (154 mV) at 10 mA·cm -2 for OER is achieved. Meanwhile, Fe-CoN/CoS 2 is of low HER overpotentials of 72 and 39 mV to drive current density of 10 mA·cm -2 in alkaline and acid condition, respectively. Furthermore, the electrolytic cell assembled with Fe-CoN/CoS 2 drives a voltage of 1.48 V at 10 mA·cm -2 . The doping of Fe can further reinforce the interaction of heterointerface between CoN and CoS 2 , resulting in the interfacial coupling enhancement. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the Fe-doping can alter the electronic structure around the heterointerface and boosts the intrinsic catalytic activity, thus reduces the adsorption energy barriers about H ⁎ and oxygen-containing intermediates. This work provides a significant insight into the understanding of transition metal ion-doping heterointerface for facilitating the catalytic activity.

Engineering cobalt sulfide/oxide heterostructure with atomically mixed interfaces for synergistic electrocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:It remains challenging to develop economical and bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Herein, we construct Co9S8 nanoflakes decorated Co3O4 nanoarrays with enriched heterogeneous interface zones on Ni foam (Co9S8@Co3O4/NF) via a novel step-wise approach. The Co9S8@Co3O4/NF hybrid manifests excellent performance with low overpotentials of 130 mV for HER (10 mA·cm−2) and 331 mV for OER (100 mA·cm−2), delivering a small voltage of 1.52 V for water splitting at 10 mA·cm−2 as well as outstanding catalytic durability, which surpasses precious metals and previously reported earth-abundant nanocatalysts. Further experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the excellent performance is attributed to the followings: (i) Highly conductive Ni facilitates the efficient charge transfer; (ii) porous core-shell nanoarchitecture benefits the infiltration and transportation of gases/ions; (iii) heterogeneous interface zones synergistically lower the chemisorption energy of hydrogen/oxygen intermediates. This work will shed light on the controllable synthesis and engineering of heterostructure nanomaterials for clean energy storage and conversion technologies.

Interfacial engineering of transition-metal sulfides heterostructures with built-in electric-field effects for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Developing highly efficient, durable, and non-noble electrocatalysts for the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the pivotal for meeting the practical demand in water splitting. However, the current transition-metal electrocatalysts still suffer from low activity and durability on account of poor interfacial reaction kinetics. In this work, a facile solid-state synthesis strategy is developed to construct transition-metal sulfides heterostructures (denoted as MS2/NiS2, M = Mo or W) for boosting OER electrocatalysis. As a result, MoS2/NiS2 and WS2/NiS2 show lower overpotentials of 300 mV and 320 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA·cm−2, and smaller Tafel slopes of 60 mV·dec−1 and 83 mV·dec−1 in 1 mol·L−1 KOH, respectively, in comparison with the single MoS2, WS2, NiS2, as well as even the benchmark RuO2. The experiments reveal that the designed heterostructures have strong electronic interactions and spontaneously develop a built-in electric field at the heterointerface with uneven charge distribution based on the difference of band structures, which promote interfacial charge transfer, improve absorptivity of OH−, and modulate the energy level more comparable to the OER. Thus, the designed transition-metal sulfides heterostructures exhibit a remarkably high electrocatalytic activity for OER. This study provides a simple strategy to manipulate the heterostructure interface via an energy level engineering method for OER and can be extended to fabricate other heterostructures for various energy-related applications.

Abstract:Reasonable design of specific interface structures and optimization of electron transfer between the various active sites is considered an effective approach to upgrade oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetic performance. Herein, a Co(OH)F/Ni(OH) 2 @FeOOH (CoFNiFe) core–shell heterostructure electrode is designed with nickel foam (NF) as the supporting material through a hydrothermal technique and rapid interface method. The OER electrocatalytic results demonstrate that the overpotential of the Co(OH)F/Ni(OH) 2 @FeOOH/NF (CoFNiFe/NF) electrocatalyst sustaining 100 mA cm −2 is 289 mV, indicating the excellent OER electrocatalytic performance of the CoFNiFe heterojunction. Moreover, the OER performance is upgraded through the reduction of the energy barrier in the electrocatalytic experiment, which is caused by interfacial electron transfer from Co(OH)F/Ni(OH) 2 (CoFNi) to FeOOH at the nanointerface. The introduction of F − and the formation of FeOOH/CoOOH/NiOOH heterointerfaces supply more descendent active sites, further improving the OER electrocatalytic behaviour. This research provides a feasible approach to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts by designing core–shell heterostructures to modulate the electronic structure of the nanointerface.

Abstract:Exploration of high-efficient and structurally stable electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at anode by a simple and feasible strategy is remained challenging for achieving hydrogen production with low-energy consumption. Herein, we successfully constructed a tri-phase interfacial structure of CoFe alloy/CoFe oxide/cobalt-doped iron oxide (denoted as CoFe/CoFeOx/Co-Fe3O4) as a high-efficient and low-cost OER electrocatalyst by one-step chemical bath deposition approach. The tri-phase interfacial structure was achieved by controlling the dosage of reductants/oxidants and tuning the proportion of Co/Fe salts. The as-prepared CoFe/CoFeOx/Co-Fe3O4 not only delivered remarkable OER activity, i.e., a low overpotential of 291 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 47.8 mV dec-1, but also exhibited a decent stability for long-term electrolysis. To unveil the catalytic mechanism, two reasonable aspects about adsorption regulation of oxygenate intermediates and interfacial charge transfer at electrode/electrolyte were predictively proposed.

Constructing heterogeneous interface between Co3O4 and RuO2 with enhanced electronic regulation for efficient oxygen evolution reaction at large current density

Abstract:Exploring effective strategies for developing new high-efficiency catalysts for water splitting is essential for advancing hydrogen energy technology. Herein, Co3O4/RuO2 heterojunction interface is construct through ion exchange reaction and pyrolysis. The as-synthesized Co3O4/RuO2-4 exhibits outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 with a low overpotential of 276 mV, and remarkable stability (maintaining activity for 60 h at 100 mA cm-2). Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the electrons around the heterogeneous interface transferred from RuO2 to Co3O4, resulting in electron redistribution and optimization of energy barriers for OER intermediates. This unique composite catalyst structure offers a new potential for designing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts at large current density.
