Abstract:The individual introduction of heavy halogens and polar heteroatom groups into N-phenylcarbazole as phosphorescence hosts has been widespread reported, but the effectiveness is usually limited. Herein, a series of N-(2- cyano-n-bromophenyl)-carbazoles and N-(2-carbamoyl-n-bromophenyl)-carbazoles (n represents the position of bromine in phenyl ring) are designed and synthesized using commercially available (CCZ) and self-made (LCZ) 9H-carbazole sources, respectively. The diverse characterization methods such as NMR, HPLC, elemental analysis, and single crystal cannot distinguish CCZ and LCZ derivatives, but crystalline room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) easily recognizes them, indicating that the trace undetectable "impurity" plays a vital role in promoting the crystal RTP of CCZ derivatives. We verify that the two-in-one introduction of bromine and polar groups significantly boosts crystal RTP, wherein intermolecular hydrogen bonding among carbamoyl units can mitigate the quenching effect of bromine on fluorescence. As a result, two fluorescence-RTP hybrid white- emitting crystals with the CIEx,y x,y chromaticity coordinates of (0.27-0.36, 0.28-0.36) and the maximal PL efficiencies of 29.6-37.7 % are achieved under 320-380 nm light excitation. This work provides an effective molecular design strategy for balancing crystal RTP efficiency and lifetime at a higher level and demonstrates the different dependence of fluorescence and RTP emissions on excitation wavelengths.
