Abstract:The study of citation tones, lexical tones produced in isolation, is one of the first steps towards understanding speech prosody in tone languages. However, methodologies for investigating citation tones vary significantly, often leading to limited comparability of tone inventories, both within and across languages. This paper presents a systematic review of research methods and practices in 136 citation tone studies on 129 tonal language varieties in China, including 99 studies published in Chinese, which are therefore not easily available to an international scientific readership. The review provides an overview of possible analytical decisions along the research pipeline, and unveils considerable variation in data collection, analysis, and reporting conventions, particularly in how f0, the primary acoustic correlate for tone, is operationalised and reported across studies. Key methodological issues are identified, including small sample sizes and inadequate transparency in communicating methodological decisions and procedure. This paper offers a clear road map for citation tone production research and proposes a range of recommendations on speaker sampling, experimental design, acoustic processing techniques, f0 analysis, and result reporting, with the goal of facilitating future tonal research and enhancing resources for underrepresented tonal varieties.

Abstract:In this paper,a new theory on tone and intonation,PENTA Model,which is put forward by Yi Xu,is introduced.He argues that surface F0 only reflects underlying tone and intonation components indirectly.Three degrees of separations can be identified: articulatory implementation,target assignment and parallel encoding.Because of the physical constraint of the vocal organ,there is a dynamic threshold of pitch change,and pitch targets are approached asymptotically.The assignment of pitch target is nonunique,and a number of communicative functions,such as lexical tone,focus,new topic and emotion,are transmitted simultaneously.

Abstract:An analysis procedure of Chinese intonation is tentatively proposed from a global perspective. This procedure starts from an observation of the interaction among three prosodic parameters and the hierarchical systems of production by looking at three continuums of utterances, followed by developing a system of acoustic and perceptual based features which can be further applied to the analysis of various types of intonation. This procedure is demonstrated by investigating into the five-syllable utterances produced by a male speaker. This pilot study suggests that the hierarchies of both duration and intensity might go up in a non-linear way in a speaker's mind, while the degree of pitch measured in semitone increases in a linear way. The selection and combination of global features indicate the restriction coming from both extrinsic (the communicative principle of explicitness) and intrinsic factors (the constraint of physical realization).

Abstract:Although previous studies have demonstrated that fundamental frequency (f0) is a significant cue in tone perception, there are other factors influencing it (e.g., segments). In the present study, we explored Initials and Finals' effect on tone perception. One perception experiment was conducted with six continua (i.e., Tone 2-Tone 3) based on syllables which include three types of Initials (i.e., plosive, affricate, fricative) and two types of Finals (i.e., with/without the medial). Results showed that both Initials and Finals had significant effect on tone perception and there existed significant interaction. For syllables with the medial, syllables with plosive and affricate were more likely to be perceived as tone 3 rather than tone 2 as compared to syllables with fricative. Syllables with plosive whose Finals include the medial were more likely to be perceived as tone 3 in contrast with syllables with plosive whose Finals exclude the medial, the latter were more likely to be perceived as tone 2. However, such effect was totally reversed between syllables with fricative.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate how tone 2 in Mandarin varies in different intonational contexts. Target tones were embedded in three focus positions and two non-focus positions in actual utterances. The high point and low point pitch values of the tones were observed and compared. The results witness a constant lower tonal high point of tone 2 over that of tone 1 and tone 4, while a similarly equal low point of tone 2 and tone 4. These results support our hypothesis in previous study that there exist [+upper] and [-upper] registers in Mandarin where tone 2 belongs to the latter one.

Abstract:Much research work has been done on the theory of intonation, especially for non-tonal languages. Pitch in tone languages is multi-functional, so intonation theories based on non-tonal languages may be not quite suitable for tone languages. In this paper, a transcription approach for Chinese intonation is put forward, which is mainly based on the Autosegmental-Metrical (AM) theory. Therefore the approach can be called C-AM approach. It is supposed that Chinese intonation is composed of pitch accents and boundary tones, which are marked by the combination of tonal register and tonal range. A finite-state grammar of Chinese intonation is proposed.

Abstract:An increasing interest in spoken word recognition has focused on studies of tonal language recently since previous cognitive and neuroanatomical models of speech perception were proposed based on studies of non-tone language. To examine the language general of these models, some studies have attempted to investigate the difference between was faster than vowel change alone. Even for tone plus consonant (T+C), two slower changes in Experiment 1, the detecting time was faster than vowel change alone. However, no further difference was observed among combined conditions. These results showed that tone involved in Chinese syllable perception. The influence of tone alone was weaker than vowel and stronger than the consonant, but its combined effect with segmental information was dramatic. The findings indicate an integrating effect between segmental and suprasegmental information in Chinese syllable perception. It suggests a future approach to investigate the integrating processing using cognitive neuroscience techniques.

Abstract:This paper reports the development of a quantitative target approximation (qTA) model for generating F(0) contours of speech. The qTA model simulates the production of tone and intonation as a process of syllable-synchronized sequential target approximation [Xu, Y. (2005). "Speech melody as articulatorily implemented communicative functions," Speech Commun. 46, 220-251]. It adopts a set of biomechanical and linguistic assumptions about the mechanisms of speech production. The communicative functions directly modeled are lexical tone in Mandarin and lexical stress in English and focus in both languages. The qTA model is evaluated by extracting function-specific model parameters from natural speech via supervised learning (automatic analysis by synthesis) and comparing the F(0) contours generated with the extracted parameters to those of natural utterances through numerical evaluation and perceptual testing. The F(0) contours generated by the qTA model with the learned parameters were very close to the natural contours in terms of root mean square error, rate of human identification of tone, and focus and judgment of naturalness by human listeners. The results demonstrate that the qTA model is both an effective tool for research on tone and intonation and a potentially effective system for automatic synthesis of tone and intonation.

Abstract:The most prominent prosodic feature of tonal languages such as Standard Chinese is their use of pitch to distinguish lexical meanings (i.e., tone). However, speech ambiguity arises in Standard Chinese because the same pitch contour can also cue another linguistic function (i.e., intonation) in the same linguistic system. As most Standard Chinese speakers also speak a local Chinese dialect, speech ambiguity can further arise when the same or similar pitch contours cue the same linguistic function (e.g., tone), but different categories of that function in two linguistic systems of a bi-dialectal speaker. This dissertation investigates how pitch is processed within a linguistic system (i.e., Standard Chinese) and across two linguistic systems (i.e., Standard Chinese and Xi’an Mandarin) when the same pitch contour cues different linguistic functions (i.e., tone and intonation) or different categories of the same linguistic function (i.e., tone).

Abstract:The four tones of Mandarin Chinese are primarily realized by changes in fundamental frequency (F0) but duration and amplitude vary systematically as well. Whether the amplitude contour was sufficient for tone perception was examined by using signal-correlated noise stimuli (which retain only duration and amplitude) of the tones in /i/, each combination resulting in a word. Five versions of each tone were used, with both typical and atypical durations. Duration did not greatly affect the judgments, while the tones with similar amplitude contours were mostly heard either correctly or as the other tone (1 and 4 flat or with early peaks; 2 and 3 with late peaks). Additionally, the time course of the F0 information was examined by presenting brief segments (40, 60, 80, and 100 ms) from several locations in /i/. The level F0 of tone 1, and segments that happened to have a level F0, primarily elicited tone 1 judgments. Most segments with movement in F0 were heard correctly, though tone 3 often elicited tone 2 judgments. This confirms the importance of F0 change and allows us to estimate where in the syllable that change becomes perceptible. [Work supported by NIH Grant HD-01994.]

Abstract:Psychology of Music, Ahead of Print. In tone languages where pitch is used to distinguish word meanings, questions arise about how tonal pitch is preserved in singing. While most studies focus on tone-melody matching by examining pitch changes between tones/notes, the pitch change of tones realized within individual notes is less investigated. This article explores how singers realized tones when singing in Chaozhou, a Southern Chinese language with a complex tonal system. It used a Chaozhou song containing 10 tonal patterns to collect data from 34 Chaozhou singers. Results show that tones are realized to varying degrees when sung, and pitch range, pitch level, and neighboring pitch of tones appear to be influential factors. Vocal training affected the realization of falling tones /53/ and /42/ by reducing the pitch fall and also affected rising tone /23/ with a larger pitch change being found for non-professional singers than for professionals. However, the singers' experience of singing in Chaozhou did not greatly affect the tone realization. An effect of the metrical structure was only found for tones /53/ and /42/. In addition, tone sandhi affects tones /53/ and /21/. The analysis also hints at the potential effect of melodic intervals on the pitch change of tones when sung.

Abstract:Tones,which are usually regarded as marks signaling the semantic differences between words,are proved to be highly motivated in this data based study.It is found that the phonetic features of a word's tone including pitch,length and acoustic intensity are closely related to such features as form,length,texture,etc.of the referent of that word.A hypothesis is proposed that the tone allows the speaker to imitate the perceived features of the world by directly utilizing the tonic features or their influences on the way of articulation of the word.
Pitch and Phonation Type Perception in Wenzhou Dialect Tone

Abstract:Wenzhou dialect is characterized by alarge tonal inventory and tones which combine pitch contour and phonation type cues. In this paper, a perception experiment was conducted to investigate identification cues of the eight tones in Wenzhou. The results of the experiment show that: I) Not all native speakers can identify tones using pitch contour alone. II) It was difficult for participants to recognize tone 1. III) Some stimuli, especially tone 4, could carry a wide range of F0 contours and still be identified as belonging to the original tonal category; many other tones, however, were perceived as belonging to other categories after only slight modifications to F0. IV) Phonation type impacts the identification of some tone categories. Based on the results, the phonological organization of Wenzhou’s tone system is examined and the possibility of reconstructing the Middle Chinese tone system is discussed.
The Influence on Realization and Perception of Lexical Tones from Affricate's Aspiration.

Abstract:Consonants in /CV/ syllables usually have potential influence on onset fundamental frequency (i.e., onset f0) of succeeding vowels. Previous studies showed such effect with respect to the aspiration of stops with evidence from Mandarin, a tonal language. While few studies investigated the effect on onset f0 from the aspiration of affricates. The differences between stops and affricates in aspiration leave space for further investigations. We examined the effect of affricate’s aspiration on the realization of onset f0 of following vowels in the form of isolated syllables and continuous speech by reference to a minimal pair of syllables which differ only in aspiration. Besides, we conducted tone identification tests using two sets of tone continua based on the same minimal pair of syllables. Experimental results showed that the aspirated syllables increased the onset f0 of following vowels compared with unaspirated counterparts in both kinds of contexts. While the magnitude of differences varied with tones. And the perception results showed that aspirated syllables tended to be perceived as tones that have relative lower onset f0, which in turn supported the production result. The present study may have applications for speech identification and speech synthesis.
Intonation processing increases task-specific fronto-temporal connectivity in tonal language speakers

Abstract:Language comprehension depends on tight functional interactions between distributed brain regions. While these interactions are established for semantic and syntactic processes, the functional network of speech intonation - the linguistic variation of pitch - has been scarcely defined. Particularly little is known about intonation in tonal languages, in which pitch not only serves intonation but also expresses meaning via lexical tones. The present study used psychophysiological interaction analyses of functional magnetic resonance imaging data to characterise the neural networks underlying intonation and tone processing in native Mandarin Chinese speakers. Participants categorised either intonation or tone of monosyllabic Mandarin words that gradually varied between statement and question and between Tone 2 and Tone 4. Intonation processing induced bilateral fronto-temporal activity and increased functional connectivity between left inferior frontal gyrus and bilateral temporal regions, likely linking auditory perception and labelling of intonation categories in a phonological network. Tone processing induced bilateral temporal activity, associated with the auditory representation of tonal (phonemic) categories. Together, the present data demonstrate the breadth of the functional intonation network in a tonal language including higher-level phonological processes in addition to auditory representations common to both intonation and tone.

Abstract:This paper explores the effects of talker-to-listener distance (TLD) on tone and examines its impact on tone perception by both native listeners and second language learners.Speakers naturally adjust vocal effort to talk to people at different distances, which leads to changes not only in intensity, duration and formant frequencies, but also in fundamental frequency (f0). Fundamental frequency is the primary acoustic cue that differentiates Mandarin lexical tones from one another. This study aims to answer the question of whether changes in f0 as a function of TLD affect tone perception by native (L1) and second language (L2) listeners. If so, what are the specific changes that have an impact on tone perception?The production study investigates the acoustic correlates of the effects of TLD on tone, using 7959 monosyllabic Mandarin speech files recorded by three speakers under 11 levels of TLD. The perception study explores the effects of TLD on L1 and L2 tone perception by 2 native listeners and 52 L2 listeners.The effects of TLD on speech production are systematic, and we present models and analyses with sufficient detail to simulate these effects. Intensity, duration, and initial and maximum f0 increase along with TLD, while time-normalized toneshapes remain invariant. The results of the perception study show that native listeners' performance is robust under changes in TLD, while L2 listeners' perception of tone interacts with TLD. One significant finding is that tone 3 recognition improves with TLD.This work investigates the relationship between speech production and perception when acoustic attributes change naturally in response to the demands of speech communication. The results have potential applications in speech synthesis, pronunciation training and second language testing.

Abstract:Previous studies on tone perception have mainly focused on the role of F 0, while there are few but increasing studies on the effect of non-modal phonation. This study investigates the role of non-modal phonation in perceiving the five level tones used in Hmu, in which the lowest level tone (T11) is often referred to as “breathy voice”. First, an acoustic analysis was conducted on those tones to determine the voice quality and whether breathiness is limited to specific tones, revealing that breathiness only co-occurs with T11. Second, a perception experiment was performed to investigate whether breathiness can influence T11 identification. Results show that identification scores significantly differ only for the pairs of two continua that involve T11. This suggests that, relative to other tones, native speakers rely on breathiness in T11 identification, which derives from the accompanying phonation in its production. These findings shed light on how, alongside F 0, non-modal phonation contributes to tone perception, which demonstrates a new kind for the role of phonation in tonal contrasts. Considering these results, it is thus necessary to incorporate phonation cues when defining tone.

Abstract:To investigate the interaction between tone and intonation on the production of the sentence-final syllables and the effects of a specific type of characters, i.e. sentence-final particles (SFPs) in Nanjing dialect, acoustic analyses were carried out in the current study. Participants were asked to produce sentences under four conditions: (1) SFPs in interrogative sentences; (2) SFPs in declarative sentences; (3) homophones of the SFPs in interrogative sentences; (4) homophones of the SFPs in declarative sentences. The acoustic productions were analyzed in order to compare the same SFPs in different intonation patterns, i.e., interrogatives and declaratives, and SFPs and their homophones in the carrier sentences. Results showed that the influence of intonation on tones within sentence-final syllables indeed exists, but SFPs mitigate the extent to which intonation functions. These results suggest that intonation is present in tonal languages as well, whereas SFPs influence the realization of intonation by reducing the extent of global rising.

Abstract:The missing information of lexical tone of Chinese has been proved to have no inhibitory effect on understanding in quiet environment in previous study. The current study set out to examine the importance of tone for speech comprehension when the contextual information is incomplete. The first experiment examined the correlation between second language (L2) speech comprehensibility and tone error ratio through 180 L2 speech samples with severe segmental and suprasegmental errors. The second experiment investigated the correlation between functional load of missing tone and word choices of sentences with tone-caused ambiguity pinyin sequences without tone information, and 30 native Mandarin speakers were asked to dictate the 14 ambiguous level-tone sentences. The results showed that tone error ratio strongly correlated with comprehensibility, and the word choice is also significantly correlated with the FL of the tones, suggesting that tone is not a redundant information in communication, and its ambiguity resolution function can be measured through FL model.
