Abstract:The Fe-N-C material is a promising non-noble-metal electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Further improvement on the ORR activity is highly desired in order to replace Pt/C in acidic media. Herein, we developed a new-type of single-atom Fe-N-C electrocatalyst, in which Fe-Nx active sites were modified by P atoms. The half-wave potential of the optimized material reached 0.858 V, which is 23 mV higher than that of the pristine one in a 0.1 mol L−1 HClO4 solution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that P doping can reduce the thermodynamic over potential of the rate determining step and consequently improve the ORR activity.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is garnering significant interest due to its potential applications in mitigating CO2 and producing fuel. However, the scaling up of related catalysis is still hindered by several challenges, including the cost of the catalytic materials, low selectivity, small current densities to maintain desirable selectivity. In this study, Fluorine (F) atoms were introduced into an N-doped carbon-supported single nickel (Ni) atom catalyst via facile polymer-assisted pyrolysis. This method not only maintains the high atom utilization efficiency of Ni in a cost-effective and sustainable manner but also effectively manipulates the electronic structure of the active Ni-N4 site through F doping. The catalyst has also been further optimized by controlling the F states, including convalent and semi-ionic states, by adjusting the fluorine sources involved. Consequently, this catalyst with unique structure exhibited comparable electrocatalytic performance for CO2-to-CO conversion, achieving a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of over 99% across a wide potential range and an exceptional CO evolution rate of 9.5 × 104 h-1 at -1.16 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). It also delivered a practical current of 400 mA cm-2 while maintaining more than 95% CO FE. Experimental analysis combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations have also shown that F-doping modifies the electron configuration at the central Ni-N4 sites. This modification lowers the energy barrier for CO2 activation, thereby facilitating the production of the crucial *COOH intermediate.

Abstract:The atomically dispersed Fe3+ sites of Fe−N−C single-site catalysts (SSCs) are demonstrated as the active sites for CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR) to CO but suffer from the reduction to Fe2+ at ∼ −0.5 V, accompanied by the drop of CO faradaic efficiency (FECO) and deterioration of partial current (JCO). Herein, we report the construction of F-doped Fe−N−C SSCs and the electron-withdrawing character of fluorine could stabilize Fe3+ sites, which promotes the FECO from the volcano-like highest value (88.2%@−0.40 V) to the high plateau (> 88.5%@−0.40–−0.60 V), with a much-increased JCO (from 3.24 to 11.23 mA·cm−2). The enhancement is ascribed to the thermodynamically facilitated CO2RR and suppressed competing hydrogen evolution reaction, as well as the kinetically increased electroactive surface area and improved charge transfer, due to the stabilized Fe3+ sites and enriched defects by fluorine doping. This finding provides an efficient strategy to enhance the CO2RR performance of Fe−N−C SSCs by stabilizing Fe3+.
Fluorine-tuned single-atom catalysts with dense surface Ni-N4 sites on ultrathin carbon nanosheets for efficient CO2 electroreduction

Abstract:A fluorine-tuned single-atom catalyst with an ultrathin nanosheet morphology (only ∼1.25 nm) and high Ni content of 5.92 wt% was fabricated by a polymer-assisted pyrolysis approach. The synthetic approach not only controls the establishment of the ultrathin nanosheet structure for achieving high surface communication, but also incorporates F dopants to manipulate the electronic structure of the metalloporphyrin-like active sites (Ni-N4). As a result, such catalyst with unique structural features exhibits a remarkable electrocatalytic performance for CO2-to-CO conversion with the Faradaic efficiency (FE) over 95% in a wide potential range and an outstanding CO evolution rate of 1146 mmol gcat–1 h–1 at –0.97 V vs. RHE. The in situ attenuated total reflection-infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the F-doping modulates the electron configuration of the central Ni-N4 sites and thereby reduces the energy barrier for CO2 activation, which is favorable to the generation of the key *COOH intermediate.

Abstract:Metal-N-4 single-atom catalysts have emerged as the frontier of catalysis. However, the low metal loading and abundance of single atoms embedded in carbon skeleton hinder their practical application. Herein, we report an effective "trapping and exposing" strategy for constructing single-atom Fe-N-4 catalysts with high density of single-atom active sites. The strategy involves the strong binding of metal ions to sucrose (trapping) to prevent the migration and agglomeration of Fe3+, followed by the introduction of a mesoporous structure using an SBA-15 template to achieve sufficient exposure of the Fe-N-4 sites (exposing). The as-prepared catalyst comprises Fe-N-4 moieties (10.8 wt%) with a hierarchical structure. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the chelating reaction between sucrose and Fe3+ ions has a low free energy, resulting in the formation of highly dispersed Fe-N-4 single atoms. The single-atom catalyst displays a high peak power density of 0.784 W cm(-2) in a H-2-O-2 proton exchange membrane fuel cell and achieves an impressive CO current density of 109 A g(-1) at negligible overpotentials in a flow cell. Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 based on metal-free carbon catalysts is an attractive approach for useful products. However, it remains great chemical challenge due to the unsatisfied activity and poor selectivity. Here, we report a successful case to greatly improve the CO2-to-CO conversion on carbon black (CB) and nitrogen-doped carbon black (N-CB). By introducing fluorine, the faradaic efficiency of CO was increased from 12.8% (CB) and 50.8% (N-CB) to 93.1% (nitrogen and fluorine co-doped carbon black, N,F-CB) at -0.7 V. A partial current density of 4.19 mA cm-2 remained durable about 23 h. The superiority of N,F-CB can be attributed to the high catalytic areas and abundant N active sites inspired by fluorine doping. Specifically, the fluorine precursor of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) firstly performs as nitrogen fixator, protecting more nitrogen from escaping during the carbonization treatment. The content of nitrogen sites is about 4.4 times higher than the N-CB. Meanwhile, PVDF as area extender significantly improves the catalytic area, the specific surface area and ECSA of N,F-CB are 8.7 and 6.9 times higher than that of CB. This work provides an insight that heteroatoms can manipulate the catalytic activity and selectivity through the catalytic area of carbon materials with more active sites.

Fluorine-doped nickel oxyhydroxide as a robust electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Fluorine (F) anion doping has recently emerged as a promising approach for boosting the activity of earth-abundant metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). But many key questions concerning this new approach remain unanswered, including the nature of F-doping, the mechanistic understanding of F-doping effects as well as the long-term stability of F-doped catalysts. Herein, we report a case study of F-NiOOH/Ni(OH)2/NF catalyst that was fabricated using a simple anodic electrooxidation method in a F-containing alkaline solution. A combination of experimental and computational studies revealed that F anions substitute for OH groups in the NiOOH surface layer and such a substitutional F-doping results in significant improvement of OER activity. In particular, the F-doped catalyst possesses outstanding stability when operated in a F-containing electrolyte. For instance, F-NiOOH/Ni(OH)2/NF showed an overpotential fluctuation of only ±4 mV in a 100-h constant current test at 100 mA cm−2 in a 0.01 M KF alkaline solution. Furthermore, our study found that this simple F-doping method is applicable to other transition metal oxide/hydroxide catalysts for boosting OER activity.

Abstract:A high‐performance dual single‐atom doped carbon catalyst is prepared by pyrolyzing Co and Hf co‐doped ZIF‐8 metal–organic frameworks. Owing to the synergistic effect of the Co–N4 and Hf–N4 moieties, the dual single‐atom doped carbon shows greatly enhanced catalytic activities toward oxygen reduction in acidic medium. Single‐atom metal‐doped M–N–C (M═Fe, Co, Mn, or Ni) catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). However, their performance still has a large gap considering the demand for their practical applications. This study reports a high‐performance dual single‐atom doped carbon catalyst (HfCo–N–C), which is prepared by pyrolyzing Co and Hf co‐doped ZIF‐8 . Co and Hf are atomically dispersed in the carbon framework and coordinated with N to form Co–N4 and Hf–N4 active moieties. The synergetic effect between Co–N4 and Hf–N4 significantly enhance the catalytic activity and durability of the catalyst. In an acidic medium, the ORR half‐wave potential (E1/2) of the catalyst is up to 0.82 V , which is much higher than that of the Co–N–C catalyst without Hf co‐doping (0.80 V). The kinetic current density of the catalyst is up to 2.49 A cm−2 at 0.85 V , which is 1.74 times that of the Co–N–C catalyst without Hf co‐doping. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits excellent cathodic performance in single proton exchange membrane fuel cells and Zn–air batteries. Furthermore, Hf co‐doping can effectively suppress the formation of H2O2, resulting in significantly improved stability and durability.

Abstract:The local coordination environment around catalytically active sites plays a vital role in tuning the activity of electrocatalysts made of carbon-supported metal nanoparticles. However, the rational design of electrocatalysts with improved performance by controlling this environment is hampered by synthetic limitations and insufficient mechanistic understanding of how the catalytic phase forms. Here we show that introducing F atoms into Pd/N–C catalysts modifies the environment around the Pd and improves both activity and durability for the ethanol oxidation reaction and the oxygen reduction reaction. Our data suggest that F atom introduction creates a more N-rich Pd surface, which is favourable for catalysis. Durability is enhanced by inhibition of Pd migration and decreased carbon corrosion. A direct ethanol fuel cell that uses the Pd/N–C catalyst with F atoms introduced for both the ethanol oxidation reaction and oxygen reduction reaction achieves a maximum power density of 0.57 W cm−2 and more than 5,900 hours of operation. Pd/C catalysts containing other heteroatoms (P, S, B) can also be improved through the addition of F atoms.

Abstract:The substantial advances of non-precious Fe-N-C materials with both high activity and stability to replace platinum-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells remain a great challenge, since their intrinsic active site design and contributing microstructure exploration are still unclear. Herein, we propose a solid-phase thermal migration strategy to synthesize Fe, N co-doped nanocarbons with a short nanotubular structure, using ferrocene as Fe source and polyaniline (PANI) as N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) source. In acidic and alkaline environments, the thermally activated Fe-N-C exhibits efficient ORR performance, and half-wave potential is 30 mV higher than a commercial Pt/C (JM, 20 wt% Pt) in alkaline medium and only 100 mV less than the Pt/C in acidic media. Impressively, the catalyst used in zinc-air battery exhibits an outstanding power density of 144.74 mW·cm −2 , higher than the one assembled by the Pt/C (125.67 mW·cm −2 ). Combining experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, the superior ORR activity should be attributed to the formation of the efficient off-plane Fe-pyridinic-N 4 species at end of the nanotubes. More important, these zigzag-type Fe-pyridinic-N 4 sites at the end regions serve as the main active sites, leading to a higher ORR activity. This work opens a door to clarify the active catalytic site types and the contributing microregions of the Fe-N-C catalysts, providing ideas for designing non-noble metal catalysts with curved surfaces and rich edge structures.

Abstract:The manuscript presents a significant advancement in the field of electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation by unveiling the role of fluorine coordination in tuning the activity of atomically dispersed iron-nitrogen (Fe-N 4 ) active sites within porous carbon (PC). The innovative approach employs chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to fabricate F-Fe-NC active sites, which, upon fluorination, modulate the electronic configuration of iron, enhancing nitrogen adsorption and activation. The F-Fe-NC catalyst demonstrated a remarkable enhancement in electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) performance, achieving an ammonia yield rate (R NH3 ) of 125.49 μg h −1 mg cat. −1 and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 25.19 %. In-situ electrochemical mass spectrometry and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to dissect the NRR kinetics and elucidate the underlying reaction mechanism, identifying the potential-determining step. The study introduces a novel, high-performance catalyst for electrocatalytic NRR and provides a practical strategy for optimizing the active-site microenvironment, laying the groundwork for the future commercial application of electrocatalytic NRR processes.

Secondary-Atom-Doping Enables Robust Fe–N–C Single-Atom Catalysts with Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with nitrogen-coordinated nonprecious metal sites have exhibited inimitable advantages in electrocatalysis. However, a large room for improving their activity and durability remains. Herein, we construct atomically dispersed Fe sites in N-doped carbon supports by secondary-atom-doped strategy. Upon the secondary doping, the density and coordination environment of active sites can be efficiently tuned, enabling the simultaneous improvement in the number and reactivity of the active site. Besides, structure optimizations in terms of the enlarged surface area and improved hydrophilicity can be achieved simultaneously. Due to the beneficial microstructure and abundant highly active FeN 5 moieties resulting from the secondary doping, the resultant catalyst exhibits an admirable half-wave potential of 0.81 V versus 0.83 V for Pt/C and much better stability than Pt/C in acidic media. This work would offer a general strategy for the design and preparation of highly active SACs for electrochemical energy devices.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce high-value-added products is considered an effective method for achieving carbon neutrality and mitigating greenhouse effects. However, due to the coexistence of competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) alongside CO2RR, the selectivity of catalysts still requires improvement. Moreover, the complex preparation methods and high cost of noble metal catalysts pose challenges. Therefore, it is crucial to find a catalyst that is easy to prepare, cost-effective in terms of raw materials, and exhibits high selectivity. In this study, chitosan was utilized as a carbon source for the catalyst, with nickel as the primary metal. Through gasification at 650 degrees C and morphology control via formation of hollow structures using Cd metal particles, along with F doping modification, an electrocatalyst (NiCd650F0.2) was prepared. This catalyst exhibited the highest CO selectivity of 90.3 % at -1 V vs. RHE, with a CO partial current density of -10.68 mA & sdot;cm-2 at -1.2 V vs. RHE. Stability tests demonstrated that its selectivity and activity remained excellent over 8 hours. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicated that F doping significantly lowers the adsorption energy barrier of reactions, promoting reaction kinetics and enhancing catalyst selectivity.

Abstract:Doping hetero-atoms into non-noble metal phosphides, which is a better strategy for enhancement of electrocatalytic activity due to regulation of the electronic structure of catalysts. Herein, the F-doped CoP/Ni 2 P nanoarrays grown on nickel foam (NF) was fabricated by facile method as a self-supported electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and this nanowires structure provide large specific surface area and more active sites. Additionally, the synergy effect between CoP and Ni 2 P can accelerate the electron transfer rate and increase the reaction rate. Moreover, the addition of strongly electronegative fluorine (F) can cause significant changes in electronic structure and enhance electrocatalytic HER performance. Therefore, the fabricated F-CoP/Ni 2 P/NF catalyst exhibits excellent HER activity in both alkaline and acidic electrolyte with a lower overpotential of 99 mV and 106 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and good durability. Hence, this work provides a simple method for exploring heteroatoms-regulated non-precious metal catalysts, which can be used to develop more efficient HER catalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed FeN5 active sites supported on defect‐rich porous carbon nanofibers (FeN5/DPCF) are successfully developed by a two‐step thermal treatment strategy with the aid of dicyandiamide. This dual‐functional strategy can not only construct intrinsic carbon defects by selectively etching pyridinic‐N and pyrrolic‐N, but also introduces an additional N from the neighboring carbon layer coordinating to the commonly observed FeN4, thus creating an FeN5 active site supported on defective porous carbon nanofibers (FeN5/DPCF) with a local 3D configuration. The optimized FeN5/DPCF achieves a high CO Faradaic efficiency (>90%) over a wide potential range of −0.4 to −0.6 V versus RHE with a maximal FECO of 93.1%, a high CO partial current density of 9.4 mA cm−2 at the low overpotential of 490 mV, and a remarkable turnover frequency of 2965 h−1. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergistic effect between the FeN5 sites and carbon defects can enhance electronic localization, thus reducing the energy barrier for the CO2 reduction reaction and suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction, giving rise to the superior activity and selectivity.

Abstract:AbstractTransition metal‐coordinated nitrogen sites on carbon catalysts (M‐N‐C) hold potential for CO2 electroreduction (CO2ER), but optimal morphology and active sites are unclear. We introduce a novel approach, developing zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8)‐derived carbon catalysts with Fe‐N and graphitic‐N sites (Fe2‐NC) via molecular confinement and thermal activation. Fine‐tuning ZIF‐8 size and activation temperature yielded 44.98% active N sites. The 300 nm Fe2‐NC catalyst displayed outstanding CO2‐to‐CO conversion, with a 170 mV overpotential and 94.3% Faradaic efficiency at −0.5 V, outperforming state‐of‐the‐art materials. Enhanced CO2ER kinetics and conductivity contributed to this superiority. Results highlight the correlation between maximum CO Faradaic efficiency and cumulative Fe‐N/graphitic‐N sites, dependent on size and activation. The 300 nm Fe2‐NC in a gas diffusion electrode‐loaded flow cell achieved a 15.3‐fold CO partial current density increase. In a Zn‐CO2 battery, the 300 nm Fe2‐NC demonstrated a peak power density of 0.618 mW cm−2, showcasing energy storage potential.
Effect of F Doping on CO2 Electrocatalytic Performance of Zinc-Based Rare Earth Layered Double Hydroxides

Abstract:As one of the major greenhouse gases, CO 2 is significantly influencing global climate change. Efficient utilization of CO 2 is considered an important approach to address the current environmental and energy challenges. In particular, using CO 2 as a raw material for the production of hydrocarbons is an attractive strategy for reducing carbon emissions while ensuring a stable energy supply. In this study, fluorine (F) doped ZnLa layered double hydroxide (F-ZL-LDH) and F-doped ZnCe layered double hydroxide (F-ZC-LDH) were prepared using a hydrothermal synthesis method. The materials' structural composition and morphology were analyzed using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The research results demonstrate that both catalysts exhibit abundant active sites, high selectivity, and excellent electrocatalytic performance for CO 2 RR to generate CO, with Faradaic efficiencies reaching 89.29% and 89.87% for F-ZL-LDH and F-ZC-LDH, respectively. The doping of fluorine results in the presence of numerous defects and pore structures on the surfaces of F-ZC-LDH and F-ZL-LDH, increasing the surface active area and enhancing charge transfer rates. Meanwhile, F doping facilitates CO 2 adsorption and mass transfer on the electrode surface. Moreover, F doping in the catalysts also restricts the adsorption and desorption of *H during the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of NiCo LDH electrocatalysts can be improved through fluorine doping. The roles of Ni and Co active sites in such catalysts remain ambiguous and controversial. In addressing the issue, this study draws upon the molecular orbital theory and proposes the active center competitive mechanism between Ni and Co. The doped F-atoms can directly impact the valence state of metal atoms or exert an indirect influence through the dehydrogenation, thereby modulating the active center. As the F-atoms are progressively aggregate, the eg orbitals of Ni and Co transition from e2 g to e1 g , and subsequently to e0 g . The corresponding valence state elevates from +2 to +3, and then to +4, signifying an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease in the electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, a series of F-NiCo LDH catalysts are synthesized to verify the eg orbital occupancy analysis, and the catalytic OER overpotentials are 303, 243, 240, and 246 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 , respectively, which coincides well with the theoretical prediction. This investigation not only provides novel mechanistic insights into the transition and competition of Ni and Co in F-NiCo LDH catalysts but also establishes a foundation for the design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis of CO2 to CO is not only conducive to the artificial carbon cycle, but also green and efficient technology for producing chemicals. In consideration of the practical application, the novel strategy for largescale preparation of catalyst has great potential to be developed. Herein, a facile one-step approach was developed for constructing a group of N-doping carbon-encapsulated metal catalysts (M@N-C (M = Fe, Co, and Ni)) for CO2 electroreduction to CO. In addition, the impact of metal on catalytic performance was detailedly researched. Specifically, the Ni@N-C catalyst achieves an excessive CO Faraday efficiency (FECO) (>90 %) on a broad achievable potential window of - 0.67 V to - 0.97 V vs RHE in the H-type cell. The optimal catalyst attains a FECO of 98 % at - 0.57 V vs RHE and an industrial-relevant current density of 430 mA cm-2 at - 1.07 V vs RHE in the flow cell. This work provides a facile way to fabricate catalyst on a large scale with preeminent performance for industrial CO2 electroreduction to CO.
