Abstract:Charge-transfer-type thermochromic materials gain increasing research interest due to its smart character of reversibly continuous color-change presenting with temperature. However, the interaction between different chromophore in the same host matrix and the underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. Herein, we proposed a chromaticity coordinates vector principle in a model system of α-Al2O3 as host and Cr3+ and Fe3+ as chromophore probes to illustrate the interaction effect of different inorganic chromophore on the thermochromic behaviour of the materials. Single chromophore of Fe3+ or Cr3+ with different doping compositions was assessed firstly to acquire the basic thermochromic behaviour. Then, samples containing both of Fe3+ and Cr3+ with varied stoichiometry were prepared to assess the thermochromic contribution of each chromophore. Phase purity and structural evolution with different doping species and compositions were analysed via Rietveld refinement of the powder x-ray diffraction data and vibration spectroscopic techniques. Chromaticity coordinates of the samples as a function of temperature were recorded. The color of Al2-xFexO3 show continuous change from the slight yellow to bright orange with x increase from 0.10 to 0.32, which is ascribed to the increasing of internal band optical transition of 3d-electrons in octahedral field. The color of Cr-doped materials show purple to green color transition either via increasing the doping level or via heating up to 550 oC with the composition-depend color transition at doping-level dependent temperature points. For Fe,Cr-co-doped samples, the color changes from light yellowish brown to dark brown gradually with the increase of Fe doping amount. While keeping Fe-amount constant, by increasing of Cr-doping amount, the color of the samples changed from khaki to dark brown gradually. All of the thermochromic vector of a*-parameter follow the typical vector calculation principle for the Fe-doped, Cr-doped, and Fe,Cr-co-doped materials with nominal stoichiometric relationships, except for the highly doped samples (i.e. for the compositions of x≥0.28 and y≥0.40), which could be ascribed to the phase segregation. The proposed temperature-chromaticity coordinates vector relationships for different chromophore in the common host matrix provide a fundamental design and fabrication principle for charge-transfer type thermochromic materials.
