Abstract:The China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) is a crucial milestone on China’s path to achieve fusion energy, serving as a bridge between the experimental reactor ITER and the demonstration reactor (DEMO). Within CFETR, the helium-cooled ceramic breeder (HCCB) blanket stands out as a leading candidate, utilizing lithium orthosilicate to generate tritium and helium for its transport. Maintaining precise temperature control is critical to ensure reliable tritium release and efficient energy production within the fusion reactor’s ceramic pebble bed. However, challenges arise from potential clogs due to pebble swelling or the presence of fragment dust from pebble crushing, potentially affecting tritium extraction and heat dissipation. This study focuses on investigating the behavior of purge flow in the presence of pebble bed clogs using coupled simulations of the discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Analyzing the flow characteristics of the purging gas revealed distinctive pressure and temperature patterns in the blocked regions. Furthermore, the simulation explored tritium transport within a clogged pebble bed. The obtained insights offer valuable guidance for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the tritium extraction system (TES).
