Abstract:Ocean reanalysis provides a temporally continuous and spatially gridded four-dimensional estimate of the ocean state for a better understanding of the ocean dynamics and its spatial/temporal variability. Here we present a 19-year (1992-2010) high-resolution ocean reanalysis dataset of the upper ocean in the South China Sea (SCS) produced from an ocean data assimilation system. A wide variety of observations, including in-situ temperature/salinity profiles, ship-measured and satellite-derived sea surface temperatures, and sea surface height anomalies from satellite altimetry, are assimilated into the outputs of an ocean general circulation model using a multi-scale incremental three-dimensional variational data assimilation scheme, yielding a daily high-resolution reanalysis dataset of the SCS. Comparisons between the reanalysis and independent observations support the reliability of the dataset. The presented dataset provides the research community of the SCS an important data source for studying the thermodynamic processes of the ocean circulation and meso-scale features in the SCS, including their spatial and temporal variability.
Annual Resolution Records of Sea-Level Change Since 1850 CE Reconstructed from Coral Δ18o from the South China Sea

Abstract:Compared with other ocean basins, annual resolution long-term series of sea-level records in the South China Sea (SCS) are still rare. Here we first analyzed the correlation mechanism between the oxygen stable isotopes (delta O-18) of Porites coral and instrumental sea-level, sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall of the SCS, and NINO 3.4 SST during 1980-2015 CE (Common Era); and we then quantitatively reconstructed sea-level at an annual resolution based on the coral delta O-18 in the SCS. The results show that the sea-level fell slightly (-0.73 +/- 0.27 mm/yr) during 1850-1900 CE; then has continuously risen (1.31 +/- 0.06 mm/yr) with a total increase of 152 & PLUSMN; 7 mm from 1900 to 2015 CE. On the inter-annual timescale, ENSO by mediating the overflow effect of seawater in the Western Pacific Warm Pool and the location of storm genesis in the western Pacific, indirectly affects sea-level, rainfall and SSS, which is finally reflected in changes in coral delta O-18 in the SCS. On the long-term timescale, especially since the 1900s, the gradual increase in SST and glaciers and ice sheets meltwater injected into the ocean due to the continuous warming mainly caused by human activities has not only promoted the rise of sea-level, but also caused a gradual negative bias of delta(18)Oseawater (i.e. a gradual decrease of SSS), these processes are faithfully recorded by coral delta O-18. Compared with SST, SSS or delta(18)Oseawater may play a more important role in promoting the negative bias of coral delta O-18 in the SCS. Our study not only provides a better understanding of sea-level history and relationship mechanism around the SCS during 1850-2015 CE, but also may have the potential to provide a valuable proxy for the accurate quantitative reconstruction of sea-level at an annual resolution over a longer time scale for recent past periods.
Design and Implementation of the Seabed Dynamic Environment Monitoring System Based on Ocean Observing Network

Abstract:The seabed dynamic environmental monitoring system is an important subject of the ocean observatory testing system in the South China Sea. On the basis of the ocean observing network built during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, the stability and reliability of the system have been improved, with a series of subsystems designed and applied, including the CAN field bus communication, ARM dual redundancy backup, Modem acoustic gateway, DC/DC parallel redundancy and backup battery. It mainly carries the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), CTD developed by the National Ocean Technology Center and high-precision pressure sensors, and integrates the shore-based monitoring and feedback subsystem, control and data acquisition subsystem, and communication and power management subsystem, achieving long-term real-time stable monitoring on the bottom boundary velocity profile, turbulent velocity field, temperature, salinity, pressure and other ocean dynamic factors. Through experiments and testing, the system is proved both stable and reliable, and conducive to the expansion and integration of sensors, which provides a reliable verification and observation node for the seabed observing network.
Observed tidal currents and the characteristics of principal tidal constituents in the South China Sea deep basin in 1997-1999

Abstract:Current observations from three moored Autonomous Temperature Line Acquisition System (ATLAS) buoys are analyzed to examine the tidal currents in the upper layer of central deep basin of South China Sea (SCS). Spectrum analysis of current data shows that diurnal and semi-diurnal tidal constituents play an important role in the total current, especially the diurnal tidal constituents. In the northern SCS deep basin, two major diurnal constituents K 1 and O 1 could contribute 33% and 21% to depth averaged current, respectively. From north to south, the magnitude of diurnal tidal constituents to the total current decrease while that of semi-diurnal tidal constituents remain similar. The magnitude, direction and contribution of most tidal currents, except the semi-diurnal tidal current in the northern part, vary significantly with water depth. This indicates that the tidal current is mainly baroclinic in upper layer of SCS deep basin. Copyright © 2009 by The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Abstract:Based on historical temperature and salinity (T–S) profiles, the correlation between the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly, sea surface dynamic height (SSH) anomaly, and temperature profile anomaly is constructed by regression analysis. A three-dimensional temperature field is reconstructed in the northern South China Sea by satellite SST and SSH, with daily temporal and 0.25°×0.25° spatial resolutions. The three-dimensional salinity field is also reconstructed based on the correlation between salinity and temperature. Compared with the observational T–S profiles, the reconstructed T–S field reflects the characteristics and structure and accurately describes the mesoscale variability of the ocean temperature field. The new expanded T–S field can be used as the initial field in numerical models and be assimilated into numerical reanalysis and prediction systems, improving their output.

Abstract:This article studied horizontal and vertical distributions of DO content and the flux of ocean-atmosphere exchange in two integrated investigation cruises respectively in July 1998 and January 1999 in South China Sea.The results indicated that the maximum DO content occurred in surface water.The maximum of DO content in the vertical distribution universally existed in the subsurface water(20～75m),with a value of 440 μmol/dm~3,and simultaneously,the maximum of pH content and the minimum of nutrient element PO_4 content occurred at the same water level,which was located near the lower bound of thermocline.Correlation analyses were used to analyze the relationship between DO and nutrient element PO_4 contents in the surface water in summer.The correlation coefficient r was-0.915(n=288),presenting a distinct negative correlation.The vertical distribution of DO content was consistent with the vertical change of pH content and the correlation coefficient r was 0.95(n=288),presenting an intense positive correlation.The upward DO flux of ocean-atmosphere exchange was-0.346~0.226mol /(m~2 ·d) in summer and-0.234~3.123 mol /(m~2 ·d) in winter according to the date obtained in July 1998 and January 1999.The primary production of ocean creatures in the South China Sea in summer is relatively higher than that in winner,so the up flux areas of dissolved oxygen in summer is wider than that in winner.In the meanwhile,the variations of exchange flux between sea and atmosphere depending on areas are also different.

Abstract:In the East China Sea, red tide has become one of the most common marine disasters.Using satellite detecting red tide has already begun for a long time.Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) has been used to monitor and analyze the red tide which happened recently in the East China Sea.The results demonstrate that: 1)The normalized water leaving radiance was obtained using Quick Atmospheric Correction (QUAC) for GOCI, and it was effective that normalized water leaving radiance (nLw) 555 nm was chose as the characteristic to monitor red tide;2) Temporal and spatial distribution of red tide in East China Sea was detected by the threshold of nLw (555 nm) which is peak and less than 1.5 mW·cm-2·sr-1·μm-1.The three events were that Prorocentrum donghaiense in May 2011, the Skeletonema costatum in July 2011, Prorocentrum donghaiense in May 2014, respectively.3) The red tide area was mainly affected by the tidal and photosynthetically active radiation during a day.NLw (555 nm) was obtained by the atmospheric correction of GOCI through QUAC.And, the red tide area was obtained by the threshold of nLw (555 nm).Combining the photosynthetically active radiation, temperature and tide, the potential reason of variety of red tide during a day was analyzed.
Reconstruction of Three‐Dimensional Ocean Structure from Sea Surface Data: an Application of Isqg Method in the Southwest Indian Ocean

Abstract:Using sea surface data, including sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface height (SSH), and sea surface salinity (SSS), from two reanalysis data sets as input, we explore the potential for retrieving subsurface three-dimensional (3-D) structures in the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) based on the "interior+surface quasi-geostrophy" (isQG) method. We find that the isQG method is particularly successful south of 35 degrees S corresponding to greater SSH anomaly (SSHA) and to higher ratio of the barotropic mode (BT) and the first baroclinic mode (BC1). Meanwhile, higher-resolution surface data may provide more coherent retrieved results with original reanalysis data in the inactive eddy regions north of 35 degrees S, where coarser data set cannot resolve mesoscale signals. Based on a long time series reconstruction by the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) surface data from 2011 to 2015 in the SWIO, our spectrum correlation analysis shows that the isQG solution achieves a better skill near the surface layer and under the thermocline depth with horizontal scale larger than 50 km, but it degrades from similar to 30- to 200-m depth south of 35 degrees S. In contrast, the spectral correlation north of 35 degrees S is relatively low, with correlation coefficient beyond (below) 0.5 for signals with a wavelength longer (shorter) than 200 km near surface layer and from 250- to 500-m depth. Mechanisms about the regional-dependent isQG skill are also discussed. This study should have important implications for both operational oceanography and ocean dynamics research in the SWIO, including the greater Agulhas system.

Abstract:The high density (2km×6km), high resolution (19 sequence boundaries) seismic reflection profiles and 42 industrial wells (including VSP data, gamma ray, sonic and density logs) are now available in Qiongdongnan Basin to the northwest of South China Sea. Then we explored the time–depth relationships of strata, obtained the compaction curves of shale and sand, and recovered the original sediment thickness. Furthermore, we calculated the sediment budget and analyzed the deepwater sedimentation processes.

Abstract:Mapping benthic reefs at high resolution and accuracy is vital for the management and conservation of coral habitats. Optical remote sensing data has emerged as a valuable tool for large-scale reef mapping in the past decades, with numerous data sets and methods being utilised and developed. In this study, we present a comprehensive comparison of optical remote sensing based bathymetry and benthic mapping methods. We use different optical data including WorldView-2 stereo and Sentinel-2 imagery to map the water depths of coral reef areas in the Xisha region of the South China Sea. Bathymetry data derived from photogrammetric and linear regression methods are compared to the reprocessed Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) data. We find that the linear regression method (root-mean-square-error, RMSE = 0.60 m) outperforms photogrammetry (RMSE = 1.02 m), and the higher resolution WorldView-2 data yields less systematic biases than Sentinel-2 data. Considering that water depths reflect changes in temperature and light, which are critical factors influencing coral reef distribution, we propose to use satellite-derived bathymetry as a feature for coral reef classification. We demonstrate that combining topography and spectral information can improve the overall mapping accuracy, particularly for compositions characterised by sharp boundaries.

Abstract:The South China Sea (SCS) is one of the largest marginal seas in the world. It includes a river-dominated, highly productive ocean margin on the northern shelf and an oligotrophic ocean-dominated basin along with other subregions with various features. It was a challenge to estimate the air–sea CO2 flux in this area. We developed a retrieval algorithm for sea surface partial pressure of CO2 ( CO2) by a combination of our previously established mechanistic semianalytical method (MeSAA) and machine learning (ML) method, named MeSAA-ML-SCS, built upon a large dataset of sea surface CO2 collected from in situ measurements during 44 cruises /legs to the SCS in the last two decades. We set several semianalytical parameters, including CO2_therm represented the combined effect of thermodynamics and the atmospheric CO2 forcing on seawater CO 2; upwelling index (UISST) and mixing layer depth (MLD) to characterize the mixing processes; and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) with remote sensing reflectance at 443 and 555 nm [Rrs(443) and Rrs(555)], which were proxies of biological effects and other characteristics for distinguishing shelf, basin, and subregions. We set the difference between seawater CO2 and atmospheric CO2( ) as the output, and the seawater {p} boldsymbol {Delta p}mathbf {C}mathbf {O}_{mathbf {2}}^{mathbf {Sea{-}Air}} 11.69~mu {p} 0.24~mu 2.87times106$ km2, while the northern shelf acts as a sink (2.02 ± 0.64 Tg C/year). With the forcing of increasing atmospheric CO2, the area-integrated CO2 efflux over the entire SCS is decreasing with a rate of 0.41 Tg C/year during 2003–2019. This shared long time series, high-accuracy dataset (1 km) can be helpful to further improve our understanding of the air–sea CO2 exchange dynamics in the SCS.

Rapid environmental assessment in the South China Sea: Improved inversion of sound speed profile using remote sensing data

Abstract:Complex perturbations in the profile and the sparsity of samples often limit the validity of rapid environmental assessment (REA) in the South China Sea (SCS). In this paper, the remote sensing data were used to estimate sound speed profile (SSP) with the self-organizing map (SOM) method in the SCS. First, the consistency of the empirical orthogonal functions was examined by using k -means clustering. The clustering results indicated that SSPs in the SCS have a similar perturbation nature, which means the inverted grid could be expanded to the entire SCS to deal with the problem of sparsity of the samples without statistical improbability. Second, a machine learning method was proposed that took advantage of the topological structure of SOM to significantly improve their accuracy. Validation revealed promising results, with a mean reconstruction error of 1.26 m/s, which is 1.16 m/s smaller than the traditional single empirical orthogonal function regression (sEOF-r) method. By violating the constraints of linear inversion, the topological structure of the SOM method showed a smaller error and better robustness in the SSP estimation. The improvements to enhance the accuracy and robustness of REA in the SCS were offered. These results suggested a potential utilization of REA in the SCS based on satellite data and provided a new approach for SSP estimation derived from sea surface data.

A construction of pseudo salinity profiles for the global ocean: Method and evaluation

Abstract:This study demonstrates a reconstruction of salinity profiles for the global ocean for the period 1993–2008. All available temperature‐salinity (T‐S) profiles from the Global Temperature‐Salinity Profile Program and Argo data are divided into two subsets; one half is used for producing the vertical coupled T‐S empirical orthogonal function (EOF) modes, and the other half is used for the verification. We employed a weighted least‐squares method that minimizes the misfits between the predetermined EOF structures and independent observed temperature and altimetry data. Verification shows that the South Indian and North Atlantic oceans maintain good correlations to 900 m depth between the observed and reconstructed salinity with altimetry data. Meanwhile, the Pacific and Antarctic oceans below 500 m shows significant negative correlations which are associated with the relationship between steric height and salinity variability in these basins. In order to guarantee general agreement with observations for all ocean depths, we calculate a regional correlation index considering the impact of altimetry data and employ it for our final products. Except for the surface ocean, the pseudo salinity profiles show general improvements compared to the existing climatology and the reanalysis outputs from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory's ensemble coupled data assimilation system. Near the surface layer, reanalysis outputs show a relatively high performance due to the coupling between the atmosphere and ocean. An assimilation system produces reliable surface flux variability not accounted for the construction of the global pseudo salinity profiles. These results encourage the application of the global pseudo salinity profiles into an assimilation system for the 20th century when the observed salinity data are sparse.
Submesoscale Eddies In The South China Sea

Abstract:Submesoscale eddies are often seen in high-resolution satellite-derived ocean color images. To efficiently identify these eddies from surface chlorophyll data, here, we develop an automatic submesoscale eddy detection method and apply it to the South China Sea. The detected submesoscale eddies are found to have a radius of 13 +/- 5 km and an aspect ratio of 0.5 +/- 0.2, with a notable predominance of cyclones. Further investigation reveals that the surface structure of these eddies displays a unique "cat's-eye" pattern, and the eddies become more circular with increasing eddy radius. Submesoscale eddies can strongly regulate surface chlorophyll via horizontal advection while they have less coherent signatures in sea surface temperature. These findings may help to improve submesoscale parameterizations in Earth system models.
Capabilities Of Three Satellite Images To Map Coral Reefs At Dong-Sha Atoll

Abstract:Coral reefs are complex marine ecosystems and environment-sensitive that are constructed and maintained by biological communities that thrive in the warm tropical ocean. Remote sensing provides a more efficient way to observe and monitor shallow coral reefs than alternative field survey. Dong-Sha Atoll is located at the northern continental margin of the South China Sea. The area of the atoll is more than 300 km(2) with an average depth of 10 m, and has being abused by destructive fishing during recent decades. In this paper, three satellite broadband multi-spectral imageries (Quickbird2, ETM+, and SPOT5) are used to survey this area. In the preprocessing, low-resolution images are geometrically corrected to high-resolution imagery. For information extraction, unsupervised classification functions are adopted for ETM+ and SPOT5 data, and supervised classification method for Quickbird2. The classification results are (or not) merged into coral reef, and operated by vectorization, simplification, and topological analysis. There are 1331 coral reefs larger than 100 m(2) with the detection limitation of 3x3 pixels at multi-band data of Quickbird2. The results extracted from SPOT5 data are better than that of ETM data at silty lagoon due to its higher resolution, and less at atoll reef bodies in the absence of blue waveband.
A GIS-based method for depicting the characteristics of mesoscale eddies: a case study in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:The paper presents a geographical information system (GIS)-based method for depicting the characteristics, particularly the internal structures and evolutionary processes, of mesoscale eddies. This was done by examining topologic relations among closed sea surface height (SSH) contours that were reconstructed from the Naval Research Laboratory Navy layered ocean model (NLOM). Different scenarios of the topological relations among the contour lines permitted the identification of the outermost outline of eddies and the depiction of the number of cores in each mesoscale oceanic eddy. With full consideration of the internal structure of the eddies, we then reconstructed the evolutionary processes of these eddies, and the results were compared with empirical observations on three long-lived mesoscale eddies in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Tracking results were similar, thereby validating our method as being efficient and robust in reconstructing mesoscale ocean eddies, especially their evolutionary processes based on their internal structures.

Abstract:A detailed survey of the reefs in the Nansha Islands’ sea that are of strategic importance is conducive to their future development. In this study, a total of 50 Landsat 8 operational land imager (OLI) images were used to analyze the geological features and spectral characteristics of the Nansha reefs. The exposed islands/sandbanks, reef flats and sub-tidal reefs were identified with the near-infrared band, the red and green bands, and the blue band, respectively. Based on the relationships among various characteristics and bands illustrated in the OLI images, the maximum between-cluster variance threshold algorithm (OTSU method) and the mathematical morphology were employed to extract characteristic parameters of the spatial geometry of the reefs from top to bottom, which were subsequently operated by a series of post-processing methods such as vectorization, simplification and topological analysis. Among the 132 standalone reefs and 16 atolls that are identified in the study, four reefs have yet to be named in the Standard Names of Various Islands in the South China Sea and the website Nansha Islands Online (http://www.nansha.org/). Another 24 ones are exposed to the atmosphere even during high tides. Taiping Island with an area of 0.57 km 2 represents the largest exposed geological feature. This study demonstrated the applicability of medium-resolution satellite images to derive the coral reef information effectively and thus provided information for the related departments that are responsible to manage the coast. An improved resolution of multispectral bands with the panchromatic band in higher spatial resolution (15 m for OLI image) is expected to provide an optimum satellite based approach to map marine habitats.

Abstract:A three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) system based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is established for the South China Sea (SCS). A set of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) are performed to evaluate the performance of this data assimilation system and investigate the impacts of different types of observations on representation of three-dimensional large-scale circulations and meso-scale eddies in the SCS. The pseudo-observations that are examined include sea surface temperatures (SSTs), sea surface heights (SSHs), sparse temperature/salinity (T/S) profiles, sea surface velocities (SSVs), and sea surface salinities (SSSs). The results show that SSHs can extend their impacts into the subsurface or even the deep ocean while other surface observations only have impacts within surface mixed layer. SSVs have similar impacts though confined to their spatial coverage, suggesting that SSVs could be a substitute of SSHs nearshore where SSHs are of poor quality. Despite their sparseness, the T/S profiles improve the representation of the temperature and salinity structures below the mixed layer, and a combination of T/S profiles with surface observations leads to a better representation of the meso-scale eddies. Based on the OSSE results, an affordable observing network for the SCS in the near future is proposed.
Remote Sensing Estimation of Sea Surface Salinity from GOCI Measurements in the Southern Yellow Sea

Abstract:Knowledge about the spatiotemporal distribution of sea surface salinity (SSS) provides valuable and important information for understanding various marine biogeochemical processes and ecosystems, especially for those coastal waters significantly affected by human activities. Remote-sensing techniques have been used to monitor salinity in the open ocean with their advantages of wide-area surveys and real-time monitoring. However, potential challenges remain when using satellite data with coarse spatiotemporal resolutions, leading to a loss of valuable information. In the current study, based on the local dataset collected over the southern Yellow Sea (SYS), a region-customized algorithm was developed to estimate SSS by using the remote sensing reflectance. The model evaluations indicated that our algorithm yielded good SSS estimation, with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.29 psu and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.75%. Satellite-derived SSS results compared well with those derived from in situ observations, further suggesting the good performance of our developed algorithm for the study regions. We applied this algorithm to Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data for the month of August from 2011 to 2018 in the SYS, and produced the spatial distribution patterns of the SSS for August of each year. The SSS values were high in offshore waters and lower in coastal waters, especially in the Yangtze River estuary. The negative correlation between the monthly Changjiang River discharge (CRD) and SSS (R = −0.71, p < 0.001) near the Yangtze River estuary was observed, suggesting that the SSS distribution in the Yangtze River estuary was potentially influenced by the CRD. In offshore waters, the correlation between SSS and CRD was weak (R < 0.2), suggesting that the riverine discharge’s effect might be weak.
