Abstract:Estimates of the effective radiative forcing from aerosol-radiation interaction (ERFari) of anthropogenic Black Carbon (BC) have been disputable and require better constraints. Here we find a substantial decline in atmospheric absorption of -5.79Wm(-2)decade(-1) over eastern central China (ECC) responding to recent anthropogenic BC emission reductions. By combining the observational finding with advances from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase6 (CMIP6), we identify an emergent constraint on the ERFari of anthropogenic BC. We show that across CMIP6 models the simulated trends correlate well with simulated annual mean shortwave atmospheric absorption by anthropogenic BC over China. Making use of this emergent relationship allows us to constrain the aerosol absorption optical depth of anthropogenic BC and further provide a constrained range of 2.4-3.0 Wm(-2) for its top-of-atmosphere ERFari over China, higher than existing estimates. Our work supports a strong warming effect of BC over China, and highlights the need to improve BC simulations over source regions.

Abstract:As an important fraction of light-absorbing particles, black carbon (BC) has a significant warming effect, despite accounting for a small proportion of total aerosols. A comprehensive investigation was conducted on the characteristics of atmospheric aerosols and BC particles over Wuhan, China. Mass concentration, optical properties, and radiative forcing of total aerosols and BC were estimated using multi-source observation data. Results showed that the BC concentration monthly mean varied from 2.19 to 5.33 μg m−3. The BC aerosol optical depth (AOD) maximum monthly mean (0.026) occurred in winter, whereas the maximum total AOD (1.75) occurred in summer. Under polluted-air conditions, both aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) and BC radiative forcing (BCRF) at the bottom of the atmosphere (BOA) were strongest in summer, with values of −83.01 and −11.22 W m−2, respectively. In summer, ARF at BOA on polluted-air days was more than two-fold that on clean-air days. In addition, compared with clean-air days, BCRF at BOA on polluted-air days was increased by 76% and 73% in summer and winter, respectively. The results indicate an important influence of particulate air pollution on ARF and BCRF. Furthermore, the average contribution of BCRF to ARF was 13.8%, even though the proportion of BC in PM2.5 was only 5.1%.

Abstract:Air pollution, a threat to air quality and human health, has attracted ever-increasing attention in recent years. In addition to having local influence, air pollutants can also travel the globe via atmospheric circulation and international trade. Black carbon (BC), emitted from incomplete combustion, is a unique but representative particulate pollutant. This study tracked down the BC aerosol and its direct radiative forcing to the emission sources and final consumers using the global chemical transport model (MOZART-4), the rapid radiative transfer model for general circulation simulations (RRTM), and a multiregional input-output analysis (MRIO). BC was physically transported (i.e., atmospheric transport) from western to eastern countries in the midlatitude westerlies, but its magnitude is near an order of magnitude higher if the virtual flow embodied in international trade is considered. The transboundary effects on East and South Asia by other regions increased from about 3% (physical transport only) to 10% when considering both physical and virtual transport. The influence efficiency on East Asia was also large because of the comparatively large emission intensity and emission-intensive exports (e.g., machinery and equipment). The radiative forcing in Africa imposed by consumption from Europe, North America, and East Asia (0.01 Wm-2) was even larger than the total forcing in North America. Understanding the supply chain and incorporating both atmospheric and virtual transport may improve multilateral cooperation on air pollutant mitigation both domestically and internationally.
Aerosol Radiative Forcings Induced by Substantial Changes in Anthropogenic Emissions in China from 2008 to 2016

Abstract:Anthropogenic emissions in China play an important role in altering the global radiation budget. Over the past decade, the strong clean-air policies in China have resulted in substantial reductions of anthropogenic emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and primary particulate matter, and air quality in China has consequently improved. However, the resultant aerosol radiative forcings have been poorly understood. In this study, we used an advanced global climate model integrated with the latest localized emission inventory to quantify the aerosol radiative forcings by the changes of anthropogenic emissions in China between 2008 and 2016. By comparing with multiple observation datasets, our simulations reproduced the considerable reductions of sulfate and black carbon (BC) mass loadings reasonably well over eastern China (the key region subject to stringent emission controls) during the period and accordingly showed a clear decline in both aerosol optical depth and absorption aerosol optical depth. The results revealed a regional annual mean positive direct radiative forcing (DRF) of +0.29 W m−2 at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) due to the reduction of SO2 emissions. This positive aerosol radiative forcing was comprised of diminished sulfate scattering (+0.58 W m−2), enhanced nitrate radiative effects (−0.29 W m−2), and could be completely offset by the concurrent reduction of BC emissions that induced a negative BC DRF of −0.33 W m−2. Despite the small net aerosol DRF (−0.05 W m−2) at the TOA, aerosol–radiation interactions could explain the surface brightening in China over the past decade. The overall reductions in aerosol burdens and associated optical effects mainly from BC and sulfate enhanced the regional annual mean downward solar radiation flux at the surface by +1.0 W m−2 between 2008 and 2016. The enhancement was in general agreement with a long-term observational record of surface energy fluxes in China. We also estimated that aerosol effects on cloud radiative forcings may have played a dominant role in the net aerosol radiative forcings at the TOA in China and over the northern Pacific Ocean during the study period. This study will facilitate more informed assessment of climate responses to projected emissions in the future as well as to sudden changes in human activities (e.g., the COVID-19 lockdown).

Abstract:Surface continuous measurements on black carbon (BC) were performed at Tongyu (44.42 degrees N, 122.87 degrees E) from March to December 2008. Tongyu is an international reference site of semi-arid climate and environment researches, located in a continental semi-arid area of northeastern China. Mass concentrations and potential contributing sources of BC are discussed for the sampling site. Hourly BC concentrations ranged from 77.61 ng m(-3) to 59.55 mg m(-3) with an average of 2.52 mg m(-3), showing a clear seasonal pattern with high values in spring, fall, and winter and low values in summer. Events of high BC concentrations occurred frequently in spring as a result of long-range transport of polluted air masses from the north, northwest, and south in the atmosphere over the Asian continent. The Yangtse River Delta (YRD) and China Anhui Province, the North China Plain (NCP), Northeast China, the Mongolian boundary near China and Russia, Middle Asia, and some areas of Russian Far East were major potential contribution sources for the observed pollutants. The region between Jiangsu Province and Anhui Province of China and the boundary regions between China and Russian Primorskiy and Khabarovskiy were possible source areas of fire emissions having great contributions to high BC levels at Tongyu. The region between Jiangsu Province and Anhui Province of China was the most important anthropogenic fire source of agricultural residue burning outflows.
Significant Contribution of Coarse Black Carbon Particles to Light Absorption in North China Plain

Abstract:Black carbon (BC) has adverse impacts on human health and significantly influences the global climate as one of the major atmospheric heating contributors. These effects strongly depend on the microphysical properties of BC. BC particles and their distributions are mostly monitored and studied by online refractory BC instruments, which account for particles with aerodynamic diameters <1 μm. During a field campaign conducted in the beginning of the heating season in Beijing, coarse BC particles (aerodynamic diameter >1 μm) were found to take up a high mass proportion (∼50%) of all BC particles, and they consisted of two types. One type was coarse-BC-containing particles with massive coating from secondary processes. Superaggregated BC (fractal BC structure) with a diameter of 2.6 μm was also noticed using transmission electron microscopy. Such two types of coarse BC particles unnoticed by typical online refractory BC instruments contribute to 17–43% of BC light absorption, indicating a possible underestimation of BC warming effects. Thus the emission and physical and chemical properties of such coarse BC should be further investigated to better constrain aerosol radiative effects.

Abstract:With urbanization worldwide in recent decades, anthropogenic dust (AD) emissions due to heavy urban construction and off-road vehicle use have been increasing. Its perturbations on urban air pollution at the global scale are still unclear. Based on observations, we found that a high urban AD optical depth is often accompanied by severe non-dust aerosol optical depth in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), both magnitudes even comparable. To investigate the causes, an AD emission inventory constrained by satellite retrievals is implemented in a global climate model. The results show that AD-induced surface radiative cooling of up to -15.9 ± 4.0 W m-2 regionally leads to reduced PBL height, which deteriorates non-dust pollution, especially over India and northern China, in addition to the tremendous direct AD contribution to pollutants. The estimated global total premature mortality due to AD is 0.8 million deaths per year and is more severe in populous regions.
The First Indirect Radiative Forcing of Black Carbon Aerosol and Its Effect on Regional Climate of China

Abstract:The regional climate model (RegCM3) and a tropospheric atmosphere chemistry model (TACM) was coupled, thus a regional climate chemistry model system (RegCCMS) was constructed, which was applied to investigate the spatial distribution, the indirect radiaitive forcing and the climatic effect of black carbon aerosol over China in January and July 2003. The simulated results show that there is high concentration of black carbon aerosol in Sichuan, Hebei and Shandong Provinces. The maximum value of the concentration reaches to 4 μg·m~(-3) in Sichuan Province in January, and 3.5 μg·m~(-3) in Central China in July, respectively. The average indirect radiative forcing at the tropopause due to black carbon aerosol is -0.389 W·m~(-2) in January and -1.18 W·m~(-2) in July over China, respectively. In some areas, indirect radiative forcing reaches -4～-4.5 W·m~(-2). Sensitivity test shows that the black carbon aerosol makes the surface air temperature drop and precipitation reduce. Mean changes in surface air temperature and precipitation are 0.025K and 0.0027 mm·d~(-1) in January and 0.16K and 0.095 mm·d~(-1) in July, respectively. There are significant differences of the reduction of the surface air temperature and precipitation in different seasons and areas.
Spatial and Temporal Variation of Anthropogenic Black Carbon Emissions in China for the Period 1980–2009

Abstract:Multi-year inventories of anthropogenic black carbon emissions, including both fuel consumption and biomass open burning, at a high spatial resolution of 0.25 degrees x0.25A degrees have been constructed in China using GIS methodology for the period 1980-2009, based on official statistical data and time-varying emission factors. Results show that black carbon emissions increased from 0.87 Tg in 1980 to 1.88 Tg in 2009 with a peak in about 1995, and had been continually increasing in the first decade of the 21 century. Residential contribution to the total BC emissions declined from 82.03% in 1980 to 42.33% in 2009 at a continuous diminishing trend, but had always been the dominant contributor in China. While contributions from industry and transportation sectors had increased notably. BC emissions were mainly concentrated in the central eastern districts, the three northeastern provinces and the Sichuan Basin, covering 22.30% of China's territory, but were responsible for 43.02%, 50.47%, 50.69% and 54.30% of the national black carbon emissions in 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2009, respectively. Besides, China made up 70%-85% of BC emissions in East Asia, half of the emissions in Asia, and accounted for averagely 18.97% of the global BC emissions during the estimation period.
Semidirect Radiative Forcing of Internal Mixed Black Carbon Cloud Droplet and Its Regional Climatic Effect over China

Abstract:Black carbon (BC) is one of the most important atmospheric aerosols. It can exert a positive radiative forcing by absorbing solar radiation and a negative radiative forcing by acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). Furthermore, cloud droplets with BC can absorb more solar radiation and reduce their single‐scattering albedo (SSA), leading to a positive cloud radiative forcing (SSA forcing) at TOA. Here we include such a process into the coupled modeling system (RegCCMS) which consists of a regional climate model (RegCM3) and a tropospheric atmosphere chemistry model (TACM) to investigate BC loading, SSA forcing, and its climatic responses in different seasons over China. The year 2003 was selected as the base year for this study. Results show high BC loadings in Sichuan, Hebei, and Shandong provinces with weak seasonal variations. The national average SSA forcing due to the cloud droplets absorption is 0.04, 0.096, 0.085, and 0.056 W/m2 at TOA, while −0.05, −0.14, −0.12, and −0.077 W/m2 at the surface in January, April, July, and October, respectively. It can reach as much as 0.6 W/m2 at TOA and −0.8 W/m2 at the surface in the regions with high BC concentration and cloud cover. Numerical experiments indicate that internal mixed BC and cloud droplet can absorb more solar radiation, then heat the air, hence reducing the cloud cover and increasing vertical velocity. On the other hand, more solar absorption due to mixture droplets can alter atmospheric and hydrologic cycle, which consequently changes the distribution of cloud cover and eventually affects surface air temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation. Given an above 90% confidence level of statistical significance of linear correlation between SSA forcing and climate changes, surface air temperature changes for 4 months vary from −0.0022 to +0.0103 K and precipitation changes range from −0.0047 in January to 0.029 mm/d in April. These changes show an extremely large seasonal variation; so do those of cloud amount (Max: −0.066%) and solar flux (Max: 0.21 W/m2). Owing to the small SSA forcing, its climatic responses are easily masked by internal model variability in summer season, especially for precipitation and cloud. Even so, small SSA forcing in colder seasons may lead to noticeable local surface drought or cooling. For example, precipitation decreases in Yangtze River Basin reaching 1.2 mm/d in October; surface air temperatures decrease by 0.2 to 0.4 K in east China in April. It is obvious that SSA forcing and its climate responses are weaker compared to BC direct, indirect, and semidirect effects. However, it does have nonnegligible influence on regional climate changes over China.
Mixing State of Black Carbon at Different Atmospheres in North and Southwest China

Abstract:Large uncertainties remain when estimating the radiative forcing by black carbon (BC) because the corresponding microphysical properties have not been well addressed. In this study, the BC size distributions were studied based on three different field campaigns at an urban site, a suburban site, and a background site in China using a single particle soot photometer (SP2) in tandem with a differential mobility diameter. Measurement results indicate that the BC particles were composed of either thinly or thickly coated aerosols. The mean number fractions of the thinly coated BC aerosols were 51 %, 67 %, and 21 % for the urban, suburban, and background sites, respectively. The corresponding thickly coated (thinly coated) core mass median diameters were 187 (154), 182 (146), and 238 (163) nm, respectively. The mean diameter of the thickly coated BC-containing aerosols was larger than that of the thinly coated BC-containing aerosols, while the mean BC core diameter of the thickly coated BC-containing aerosols was smaller than that of the thinly coated BC-containing aerosols. About 10 % of the BC-containing aerosols with the BC core are attached to the other non-BC components, which were mainly generated by coagulation between the BC and non-BC components. The measurement results in our study can be further used in modeling studies to help with constraining the uncertainties of the BC radiative effects.
The Fast Response of the Atmospheric Water Cycle to Anthropogenic Black Carbon Aerosols during Summer in East Asia

Abstract:Abstract Studies of the climate effects of black carbon (BC) in East Asia are not abundant and the effects remain uncertain. Using the Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1) with Peking University’s emissions data, the fast response of the atmospheric water cycle to anthropogenic BC during summer in East Asia is investigated in this study. Results show that the CESM1-simulated BC concentration and its direct effective radiative forcing are comparable to observations. With the combination of aerosol–radiation interaction (ARI) and non-aerosol–radiation interaction (including aerosol–cloud interaction and surface albedo effects), anthropogenic BC induces a “wetter south and drier north” pattern over East Asia during summer. Also, anthropogenic BC affects the summer precipitation primarily through changing moisture transport rather than altering local evaporation over East Asia. Using the self-developed atmospheric water tracer method, the responses of dominant moisture sources [the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) and northwest Pacific] to anthropogenic BC are investigated. Results show that the moisture originating from southwest monsoon-related sources (especially the TIO) is more responsive to anthropogenic BC effects over East Asia. In particular, differing from total precipitation, TIO-supplied precipitation shows a significant response to the ARI of anthropogenic BC over East Asia. Process analyses show that anthropogenic BC affects the southwest monsoon-related moisture supplies primarily via advection, deep convection, and cloud macrophysics. Interestingly, the anthropogenic BC-induced changes of TIO-supplied water vapor in these three processes are all dominated by the ARI over East Asia.

Aerosol direct radiative forcing over China: A 40-year MERRA-2-based evaluation

Abstract:Aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) has substantial impacts on regional and global climate changes, whereas it remains one of the largest uncertainties among various climate forcing factors. The 40-year detailed clear-sky ADRFs over China from 1981 to 2020 are systematically studied based on the MERRA-2 satellite reanalysis data, which hopefully benefit for the evaluation of the performances of aerosol-climate models. The clear-sky shortwave ADRFs show diverse spatial distributions with strong top of atmosphere (TOA) and surface cooling and atmospheric heating over the Taklamakan desert, eastern China, and southern China. A high clear-sky longwave surface ADRF reaching ∼6.5 W/m 2 over dust source regions is found, and continuous increase of ADRFs over the Taklamakan desert during the past four decades may indicate that dust episodes therein are becoming severe. The mean clear-sky shortwave surface, TOA and atmospheric ADRFs, and longwave surface ADRF over China during 1981–2020 are found to be −12.3, −5.1, 7.2, and 1.0 W/m 2 , respectively. The seasonality of clear-sky ADRFs shows strongest mean values in spring, moderate forcings in summer and fall, and weakest levels in winter. The monthly average clear-sky surface and TOA ADRFs over China vary by approximately twofold, ranging the weakest values of −7.8 and −3.9 W/m 2 in December to the strongest −17.6 and −7.1 W/m 2 in April, respectively. Distinctive seasonal and monthly patterns of clear-sky ADRFs are generally seen among the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Tarim Basin in China, while the monthly ADRF patterns over a typical area of these four regions are similar during four different decades. The clear-sky ADRFs over China are highly correlated with aerosol optical thickness, and dust has strong influences on clear-sky shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing among column aerosol compositions. Our study indicates general underestimations of clear-sky atmospheric ADRF over China by aerosol-climate models and stronger impacts of aerosol scattering than absorption on the TOA radiation budgets in China.

Contribution of Human Activities and the Natural Carbon Cycle to Carbon Emissions in China and Their Impact on Global Radiative Forcing

Abstract:The impact of China's anthropogenic and natural CO2 emissions on global climate must be correctly assessed. Unfortunately, past studies generally evaluated anthropogenic emissions or the natural carbon cycle separately and few included trade-related (import and export) CO2 emissions. We combined these factors and found that global-scale and China-produced CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning showed an increasing trend, strong before 2012 then less pronounced. The corresponding radiative forcing (RF) also increased from 2000–2018. From 2000 to 2018, the contribution of China's fossil fuel combustion to global RF was 11.32%, but the net anthropogenic contribution decreased to 9.50% when trade-related emissions were included. Further including the offset from China's terrestrial ecosystems, we calculated a net contribution from China to global RF of 7.63%. Our results indicate that China's trade-related emissions and terrestrial ecosystems are fundamental in mitigating global anthropogenic warming effects.
Direct Radiative Forcing of Light-Absorbing Carbonaceous Aerosols in China

Abstract:China is an important emitter of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols (LACs), including black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC). Currently, there are large uncertainties in model-estimated direct radiative forcing (DRF) of LACs, partially due to the poor understanding of the emissions and optical properties of LACs. In this study, we estimated the DRF of LACs over China during the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) using the global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) coupled with the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model of GCMs (RRTMG). We updated the refractive index of BC, includedbiomass burning (BB) sources, biofuel (BF) and coal combustion (CC) sources in the residential sector as BrC emission sources and the optical properties were updated, which were not fully considered in the previous model studies. Our results showed that model could reasonably capture the spatial and temporal variations of LACs in China with the correlation coefficients between model simulated and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observed daily absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) of LACs at 440 nm above 0.63 and the corresponding values of the normalized mean bias within +/- 30%. The simulated annual mean LACs AAOD at 440 nm in China was 0.016 (0.021) in 2017 (2014) and BrC contributed about 20% (21%). The estimated annual mean clear-sky LACs DRF at the top of the atmosphere in China was 1.02 W m(-2) in 2017 and 1.38 W m(-2) in 2014, and the contribution of BrC was about 10% and 11%, respectively, which was dominated by the BF sources (46% in 2017 and 44% in 2014) and the BB sources (38% in 2017 and 43% in 2014), with CC sources being low (16% in 2017 and 13% in 2014). The annual mean AAOD and DRF of LACs in China decreased by 0.005 and 0.36 W m(-2) from 2014 to 2017, which were largely attributed to the reductions of anthropogenic emissions during the implementation of APPCAP. Our results would improve the understanding of the light absorption capacity and climate effects of LACs in China.

Abstract:An online coupled regional climate and chemistry model was used to investigate the direct effects of anthropogenic aerosols (sulfate, nitrate, black carbon BC and organic carbon OC) with different mixing states over China. Three mixing assumptions were considered, including external (EM), internal (IM, BC-core surrounded by well mixed scattering-shells) and partially internal (PIM, 32.2% of sulfate and nitrate, 35.5% of BC and 48.5% of OC were internally mixed) mixtures. Results indicated that high levels of anthropogenic aerosols were found in Southwest and Central to East China. Regional mean surface loadings of sulfate, nitrate, BC, primary OC over China were 9.56, 3.64, 2.30, and 2.99 mu g m(-3), respectively. PIM-aerosol optical depth and single scattering albedo, which were consistent with AERONET and satellite observations, were 0.51 +/- 0.37 and 0.95 +/- 0.02 in Central to East China, implying that proportions of internally mixed aerosols in PIM were reasonable to some degrees. Both aerosol direct radiative forcing (DRF) and corresponding climate responses were sensitive to aerosol mixing states and BC/OC hygroscopicities. The more BC was internally mixed or hydrophilic, the more solar radiation was absorbed, thus leading to more decreases in cloud amount (CA) and subsequently less surface cooling. Combining with the uncertainties of BC/OC hygroscopicities, regional mean PIM-aerosol DRF at the top of atmosphere ranged from -0.78 to -0.61 W m(-2) in all-sky and from -5.24 to -4.95 W m(-2) in clear-sky. Additionally, responses of cloud amount and water path, total column absorbed solar radiation (TCASR), surface air temperature and precipitation (TP) to PIM-aerosol DRFs over China were about -0.45 similar to -0.37%, -0.44 similar to -0.32 g m(-2), +0.69 similar to +0.72 W m(-2), -0.13 similar to -0.11 K and -4.56 similar to -4.29%, respectively. These responses were also sensitive to the lateral boundary condition perturbations especially for CA, TCASR and TP, while DRFs themselves were not. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Aerosol particles can strongly affect both air quality and the radiation budget of the atmosphere. Above Beijing, the capital city of China, large amounts of aerosols within the atmospheric column have caused the deterioration of local air quality and have influenced radiative forcings at both the top and the bottom of the atmosphere (BOA and TOA). Observations of aerosol radiative forcing and its efficiency have been made using two sun-photometers in urban Beijing between 2013 and 2015, and have been analyzed alongside two air quality monitoring stations' data by dividing air quality conditions into unpolluted, moderately polluted, and heavily polluted days. Daily average PM2.5 concentrations varied greatly in urban Beijing (5.5-485.0 mu g/m(3)) and more than one-third of the analyzed period is classified as being polluted according to the national ambient air quality standards of China. The heavily polluted days had the largest bottom of atmosphere (BOA) and top of atmosphere (TOA) radiative forcings, but the smallest radiative forcing efficiencies, while the unpolluted days showed the opposite characteristics. On heavily polluted days, the averaged BOA aerosol radiative forcing occasionally exceeded -150 W/m(2), which represents a value about three-times greater than that for unpolluted days. BOA aerosol radiative forcing was around two-to-three times as large as TOA aerosol radiative forcing under various air quality conditions, although both were mostly negative, suggesting that aerosols had different magnitudes of cooling effects at both the surface and the top of the atmosphere. Unpolluted days had the largest average values of aerosol radiative forcing efficiencies at BOA (and TOA) levels, which exceeded -190 W/m(2) (-70 W/m(2)), compared with the lowest average values in heavily polluted days of around -120 W/m(2) (-55 W/m(2)). These results suggest that the high concentrations of particulate matter pollution in the urban Beijing area had a strong cooling effect at both BOA and TOA levels.

We show that black carbon (BC) aerosols play the key role in modifying the PBL meteorology and hence enhancing the haze pollution. With model simulations and data analysis from various field observations in December 2013, we demonstrate that BC induces heating in the PBL, particularly in the upper PBL, and the resulting decreased surface heat flux substantially depresses the development of PBL and consequently enhances the occurrences of extreme haze pollution episodes. We define this process as the dome effect of BC and suggest an urgent need for reducing BC emissions as an efficient way to mitigate the extreme haze pollution in megacities of China.

Abstract:Black carbon(BC) is one of the most important absorbent aerosols in the atmosphere,and it has a significant impact on climate change.This study analyzed the concentration and seasonal variation of carbonaceous aerosols sampled on the Pukou campus of Nanjing University in 2008.With a box model coupled with OPAC(Optical Properties of Aerosols and Clouds) and TUV(Tropospheric Ultraviolet and Visible radiation model),the optical thickness and radiative forcing of BC were estimated on the basis of the sampling data.Investigations showed that the average concentrations of BC and organic carbon(OC) are 6.7±4.6 μg/m3and 21.3±13.3 μg/m3,respectively,and the average ratio of OC/BC is 3.4.The mass concentration of BC is higher in winter and fall but lower in summer.The model calculation suggests that the annual mean optical depth and absorbing coefficient of BC are 0.07 and 44 Mm 1,respectively.In a clear sky at noon,BC has a maximum instantaneous direct radiative forcing of 22.9±14.3 W/m2at the surface and 12.5±7.3 W/m2at the top of the atmosphere.
