Abstract:Ocean surface waves induced by wind forcing and topographic effects are a crucial physical process at the air–sea interface, which significantly affect typhoon development, ocean mixing, etc. Higher-resolution wave modeling can simulate more accurate wave states but requires a huge number of computational resources, making it difficult for Earth system models to include ocean waves as a fast-response physical process. Given that high-resolution Earth system models are in demand, efficient high-precision wave simulation is necessary and urgent. Based on the wave dispersion relation, we design a new wave modeling framework using a multiscale grid system. It has the fewest number of fine grids and reasonable grid spacing in deep-water areas. We compare the performance of wave simulation using different spatial propagation schemes, reveal the different reasons for wave simulation differences in the westerly zone and the active tropical cyclone region, and quantify the matching of spatial resolutions between wave models and wind forcing. A series of numerical experiments show that this new modeling framework can more precisely simulate wave states in shallow-water areas without losing accuracy in the deep ocean while costing a fraction of the price of traditional simulations with uniform fine-gridding space. With affordable computational expenses, the new ocean surface wave modeling can be implemented into high-resolution Earth system models, which may significantly improve the simulation of the atmospheric planetary boundary layer and upper-ocean mixing.

Abstract:Using the latest version of Mesoscale Modeling System (MM5v3), we assimilated wind data from the scatterometer and built a model to assimilate the wind field over eastern China seas and adjacent waters and applied the wave model WAVEWATCH-III to test the sea area with assimilative wind and blended wind of QSCAT and NCEP as driving forces. High precision and resolution numerical wave results were obtained. Analysis indicated that if we replace the model wind result with the blended wind, better sea surface wind results and wave results could be obtained.

Abstract:The design proposal of regional tidal prediction based on the tide assimilation numerical simulation results was proposed and the web-oriented visual tidal forecast system was set up.The system applies ASP.NET technology to establish tidal prediction simulation model of the Bohai,Yellow and East China Sea with the application of Princeton Ocean Model(POM)results which are assimilated by the data of TOPEX/Poseidon(T/P)satellite altimeter and tide gauge records.By simulating the harmonic constant of main tidal constituents,the system can calculate the tidal level of any point at any time,which lays the foundation for visual simulation research of regional tidal prediction.

Abstract:Data explanation The dataset includes the major data for the manuscript: ‘Modeling Multi-Decadal Morphological Evolution of the Radial-Shaped Sand Ridges in the Southern Yellow Sea, China’. There are 7 data structures in the mat file: Elevation_SLRscenarios: this includes the elevation data for the sea level rise scenarios at year 2059, including the base scenario (noSLR), SLR1 (3 mm/yr), and SLR2 (11 mm/yr). Abstract:Wave climate analysis and other applications for the Pacific Ocean require a reliable wave hindcast. Five source and sink term packages in the Wavewatch III model (v3.14 and v4.18) are compared and assessed in this study through comprehensive observations, including altimeter significant wave height, advanced synthetic aperture radar swell, and buoy wave parameters and spectrum. In addition to the evaluation of typically used integral parameters, the spectra partitioning method contributes to the detailed wave system and wave maturity validation. The modified performance evaluation method (PS) effectively reduces attribute numbers and facilitates the overall assessment. To avoid possible misleading results in the root mean square error-based validations, another indicator called HH (indicating the two authors) is also calculated to guarantee the consistency of the results. The widely used Tolman and Chalikov (TC) package is still generally efficient in determining the integral properties of wave spectra but is physically deficient in explaining the dissipation processes. The ST4 package performs well in overall wave parameters and significantly improves the accuracy of wave systems in the open ocean. Meanwhile, the newly published ST6 package is slightly better in determining swell energy variations. The two packages (ACC350 and BJA) obtained from Wavewatch III v3.14 exhibit large scatters at different sea states. The three most ideal packages are further examined in terms of reproducing waveinduced momentum flux from the perspective of transport. Stokes transport analysis indicates that ST4 is the closest to the NDBC-buoy-spectrum-based transport values, and TC and ST6 tend to overestimate and underestimate the transport magnitude, respectively, in swell mixed areas. This difference must be considered, particularly in air–wave–current coupling research and upper ocean analysis. The assessment results provide guidance for the selection of ST4 for use in a background Pacific Ocean hindcast for high wave climate research and China Sea swell type analysis.

Abstract:Accurate information on waves and storm surges is essential to understand coastal hazards that are expected to increase in view of global warming and rising sea levels. Despite the recent advancement in development and application of large-scale coastal models, nearshore processes are still not sufficiently resolved due to coarse resolutions, transferring errors to coastal risk assessments and other large-scale applications. Here we developed a 50-year hindcast of waves and storm surges on an unstructured mesh of >650,000 nodes with an unprecedented resolution of 2-4 km at the global coast. Our modelling system is based on the circulation model SCHISM that is fully coupled with the WWM-V (WindWaveModel) and is forced by surface winds, pressure, and ice coverage from the ERA5 reanalysis. Results are compared with observations from satellite altimeters, tidal gauges and buoys, and show good skill for both Sea Surface Height (SSH) and Significant Wave Height (Hs), and a much-improved ability to reproduce the nearshore dynamics compared with previous, lower-resolution studies. Besides SSH, the modelling system also produces a range of other wave-related fields at each node of the mesh with a time step of 3 hours, including the spectral parameters of the first three largest energy peaks. Abstract:In order to understand the influence of tide on sand exchange between an estuary and adjacent coastal region, three estuaries around North West England were chosen for detailed study using an open-source numerical morphological model system, TELEMAC. The source code of model was modified to customize tidal conditions and bed sand sizes. An "input- reduction" method was used to model sediment transport under several tides. "Morphological representative tide" was further achieved for long-term morphological modelling. It is clear that the dominant hydrodynamic processes of an estuary are influenced by tidal asymmetry. Local sediment transport is affected by seabed bathymetry and tidal asymmetry. Furthermore, shape and bathymetry of an estuary can influence tidal elevation and velocity. Tidal range can change transportation of the tidal wave which further changes the range of sediment transport.

Abstract:This dataset studies the breaking process of internal solitary waves on rough slopes by conducting laboratory internal wave flume experiments. High-resolution velocity and density field data were obtained by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planer Laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF). The breaking parameters and turbulent structure are analyzed, and the laws of water mixing and energy dissipation induced by internal solitary wave breaking under different roughness conditions are summarized. ‘SM’, ‘HM’, ‘CY’, ‘TR’, ‘CS’ stands for different rough bottom cases shown in Excel. The number '8' represents 8cm of collapse height.

Abstract:A high‐resolution wave model is crucial for accurate modeling of sediment and organic material transports, but its computational costs hinder direct coupling to an ecosystem model. We developed a machine learning model using long short‐term memory to simulate large‐scale, high‐resolution waves. Trained with numerical wave model (NWM) outputs and wind data from nine locations, our model successfully replicates NWM results for daily mean significant wave height and period in Chesapeake Bay with identical spatial resolution. Compared to the NWM, the data‐driven model has root‐mean‐square errors below 6 cm for daily mean significant wave height and 1 s for the wave period in the bay. It demonstrates excellent model skills and can accurately forecast daily mean significant wave height and period at NOAA wave stations comparable to NWMs. Using minimal wind data and having a short runtime, our data‐driven model shows promise as an alternative for wave forecasting and coupling with sediment and ecological models.

Multi-scale Sea Ice Kinematics Modeling Dataset with a Tripolar Grid Hierarchy (TS Grids) in CESM

Abstract:1. We design a new tripolar grid generation method for global ocean-sea ice modeling. The generated grid is orthogonal and compatible with ocean and sea ice models. A hierarchy of ocean-sea ice model grid is constructed and incorporated in CESM by using the grid generation method. The generated tripolar grids are regarded as TS045, TS015 and TS005, with the nominal resolution of 0.45o (800x560), 0.15o (2400x1680) and 0.05o (7200x5040), respectively. The resolution range for the grid hierarchy covers climate modeling to sub-mesoscale capable for ocean modeling. 2. Atmosphere forced simulations based on CESM D-type experiments are carried out for TS grid. Both TS045 and TS015 experiments start with no sea ice, integrate for 42 years. TS005 starts from the equilibrium state of TS015 result (36 year), runs for another 7 years. 3. TS0*.grid files include necessary grid information, such as grid latitude, longitude, etc. TS0*.kmt files denote the deepest level at each grid location. Bilinear interpolators from TS grid to atmosphere T62 grid are provided with map*.nc files. The model outputs at year 42 are provided with T*.nc files. The last two kinds of netcdf files are compressed with Linux command "gzip".

Abstract:The Xisha islands is a unique area where offshore structures can be utilized as exploration bases in the remote sea. Forecasting of sea state parameters is critical for the design and operation of offshore structures. The goal of this work is to establish an effective operational model to simulate wind waves in the Xisha Islands based on the third-generation wave model WAVEWATCH-III. During the process, two significant difficulties are highlighted and addressed: grid modeling optimization and physical source terms assessment. Typhoon-induced waves using different grid modeling techniques and physical parameterizations were modeled and evaluated using buoy measurements near islands and reefs. It was found that the unstructured triangular grid had a better performance than the other grid options in complex terrain environments like the Xisha Islands. The ST2 source-term package can provide efficient and accurate results in significant wave heights than the other source-term packages in the South China Sea.

Performance Evaluation of Parameterizations for Wind Input and Wave Dissipation in the Spectral Wave Model for the Northwest Atlantic Ocean

Abstract:An ocean wave model for the northwest Atlantic Ocean based on WAVEWATCH III is used to evaluate four different source term packages (known as ST2, ST3, ST4, and ST6) for the wind input and wave dissipation. The performance of ST2, ST3, ST4, and ST6 is assessed using available measurements from buoy stations and satellite altimeters. The model results for significant wave height (H-s), mean wave period (T-m02), wave spectrum, wind input, and wave dissipation are examined during two periods: (i) winter storms in February and (ii) Hurricane Ophelia in September/October 2011. Analyses of model results demonstrate that ST4 and ST6 have the best performance with an average scatter index within 19.0% for H-s and T-m02 in the presence of strong currents and sea ice. These four packages perform differently under different sea states. Package ST6 generally overestimates H-s under the wind-wave-dominated sea states because of strong wind input and fast wave growth but underestimates H-s under swell-dominated sea states because of strong swell dissipation. The effects of ocean surface currents and sea ice on the wave model performance are also investigated. The linear kinematic effects of surface currents on waves can cause non-linear dynamic effects, which can differ among the four packages. Wave scattering in sea ice increases the wave directional spread and may cause an increase in H-s. In the presence of sea ice, wind input is reduced and shifted to higher frequencies and wave dissipation is further suppressed.

Abstract:This record contains data related to article "A 12-Year Climate Record of Wintertime Wave-Affected Marginal Ice Zones in the Atlantic Arctic based on CryoSat-2 ". Wave-affected marginal ice zone (MIZ) is an integral part of the sea ice cover, and a key region for air-ice-sea interactions in polar regions. We develop a novel retrieval algorithm for wave-affected MIZs based on the delay-Doppler radar altimeter onboard CryoSat-2 (CS2). CS2 waveform power and the waveform stack statistics are used to determine the MIZ locations. Based on the CS2 data since 2010, we generate a record of wave-affected MIZs in the Atlantic Arctic, spanning 12 winters between 2010 and 2022. The dataset contains two parts. First, the txt file contains retrieved MIZ locations obtained from each single track. Each column of data is represented by the corresponding CS2 product name, year, month, day, hour, regional flag (1:GS region,2:NS region,3:BS region), the start longitude and latitude of the marginal ice zone on each track, the end longitude and latitude of the marginal ice zone. Second,the gridded dataset is based on the along-track MIZ retrieval results, and it records the presence of the MIZ on the monthly basis. The latitude-longitude grid is adopted, with 2 degrees of longitude spacing and 1 degree of latitude spacing. Each file contains the following variables: the time, the MIZ flag, and the location flag.

Abstract:Reliable long-term wave data are significant for understanding changes and variability of ocean waves, which has important implications for coastal engineering, land erosion, and coastal flooding. This study develops a regression-guided weather-type statistical method for modelling regional or global significant wave height Hs . The model classifies the atmospheric circulation patterns (predictor) through the regression-guided clustering approach, linking the atmospheric circulation with clustered regional Hs (predictand). It is applied in the Chinese marginal seas and also the global ocean. A comprehensive skill assessment shows robust skill and computationally efficiency of the model in capturing climatology and variability of both mean and extreme Hs in the Chinese marginal seas and global oceans. Furthermore, the reconstructed global Hs data show similar seasonal trends as the ERA5 data, with a gradual decrease in Hs observed during boreal summer in the central Pacific and western North Atlantic regions at lower latitudes. This method proves to be robust for both regional and global Hs reconstruction, and also applicable for Hs climate prediction and projections.

Abstract:In order to improve the skill of weather forecast and provide better meteorological service for Olympic Sailing Competition,high resolution numerical model system for Qingdao Olympic Sailing Competition(including forecast model and interpretation models) is developed. Based on Weather Research & Forecast(WRF) Model Version 3.0,a forecast model is set up with gird of 60×50×38 and horizontal resolution of 500 m.It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to produce 15-hour forecast on an IBM computer with 8 threads,which meets the requirement of operational forecast. Dynamic interpretations to the forecast results are carried out with the aid of a high-resolution Planetary Boundary Layer Model(PBLM) and an Urban Neighborhood Scale Model(UNSM)(with the horizontal resolution of 100 m and 10 m respectively). This model system runs continuously during the summer of 2008,and the model products are used in Qingdao Branch of Beijing Olympic Meteorological Service Center.Results show that,the model system is robust and practical,and performs quite well on the simulation of urban heat island and local circulations (e.g.,sea-land breeze and terrain/building effects).Analyses of numerical cases indicate that urbanization leads to urban heat island,increases sea-land temperature difference,and strengthens sea-breeze.Meanwhile the drag effect of urban building decreases the wind speed,and slows down the advance of seabreeze. The introducing of fine underlying surface data is critical to high resolution numerical simulation of local circulations(e.g.,sea-breeze). The dynamic interpretation to the forecast results with the aid of a high resolution PBLM with the horizontal resolution of 100 m indicates that,generally PBLM could simulate the wind field and the effects of surrounding terrain very well.The PBLM results are consistent with the observations from buoys and automatic weather stations,and have similar characteristics with Lidar observations.Further fine-scale dynamic interpretation in terms of UNSM with the horizontal resolution of 10 meters shows that UNSM could well simulate the wind in urban blocks.So the dynamic interpretations based on the terrain-following coordinate PBLM and the build-aware UNSM are effective to simulate the effect of local terrain and buildings on the wind in interest venues.
A Highly Effective Global Surface Wave Numerical Simulation with Ultra-High Resolution

Abstract:Surface wave is the most energetic form of motions in the ocean and is crucially important to navigation safety and climate change. High-resolution global wave model plays a key role in accurate surface wave forecasting. However, operational forecasting systems are still not in high-resolution due to entailed high demand for large computation, as well as low parallel efficiency barrier. Here breakthroughs encompassing the design and application of irregular quasi-rectangular domain decomposition, master-slave cooperative computing workflow and pipelining scheme were applied to a global wave model, which has been used in several operational forecasting systems and earth system models. Our realistic surface wave simulations on Sunway TaihuLight Supercomputer demonstrated that our model had outstanding scalability and achieved 45.43 PFlops in ultra-high resolution of (1/100)°, using full-scale supercomputer with 10,649,600 cores. That provides a highly effective solution for accurate surface wave forecasting and climate change prediction.

Abstract:A new ocean-atmosphere-wave regional coupled model named Windwave version 1.0 for simulating and predicting winds and waves has been developed for the Northwest Pacific Ocean.&#160;In particular, the global-to-regional nesting technique is adopted for the ocean component to alleviate the bias due to the inconsistency in the lateral boundary.&#160;This paper is devoted to describing the coupling details of Windwave and the initialization scheme and assessing its basic performance, especially in predicting surface winds and significant wave heights (SWH) on the weather timescale.&#160;The control experiment set contains 31 experiments for August 2020, with seven typhoons passing through the Northwest Pacific.&#160;Each experiment starts at 0:00 am UTC of each day and runs for three days.&#160;Experiment results show that the new coupled model performs well in predicting surface winds, SWH, surface air temperature, and sea surface temperature on the weather timescale.&#160;In particular, the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) of surface winds at 10 m height over the Northwest Pacific of the control experiment are 1.82 m s-1, 2.22 m s-1, and 2.59 m s-1, respectively, at lead times of 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h.&#160;Meanwhile, the RMSEs of SWH at lead times of 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h are 0.39 m, 0.43 m, and 0.51 m.&#160;In addition, we have explored the impacts of the different sea surface aerodynamic roughness parameterization schemes on predicting surface winds and SWH.&#160;In total, five different sea surface aerodynamic roughness parameterization schemes are adopted, corresponding to one control set and four sensitivity sets of experiments.&#160;Under normal conditions, the sea surface aerodynamic roughness parameterization scheme considering the effects of wind-wave direction tends to perform better for winds and waves, while that depending on wave age and SWH tends to perform worse.&#160;Under extreme wind and wave conditions, the schemes considering the effects of wind-wave direction and that considering wave age and peak wave length have better performance.&#160;These findings can provide new insights for developing a more advanced sea surface aerodynamic roughness parameterization scheme.
