Abstract:Multiscale wind velocity fluctuation and complex inertial response of sand saltation to wind variations give rise to intermittent and nonuniform sand transport, which greatly challenges the prediction of transport rate under wind conditions around saltation threshold. In this paper, three‐dimensional sand saltation within simulation domain of wind tunnel scale is modeled based on large eddy simulation of turbulent wind. Special attention is paid to the prediction of surface shear stress and consequently aerodynamic entrainment. When the wall stress model considering the influence of large‐scale turbulent structures was employed in case of relatively small resistance level for calculating particle aerodynamic entrainment, the model results predict sand transport below the impact threshold. The sand transport rate in this regime increases exponentially with mean wall stress, in contrast to the standard power law‐like behavior above the impact threshold. Aerodynamic entrainment and strong transport events lag behind high‐speed fluids sweep on a large scale even in wind tunnel, but the spatiotemporal variability of small‐scale sand transport is still unclear and quite complex due to transport inertia.
Unified Model of Sediment Transport Threshold and Rate Across Weak and Intense Subaqueous Bedload, Windblown Sand, and Windblown Snow

Abstract:Nonsuspended sediment transport (NST) refers to the sediment transport regime in which the flow turbulence is unable to support the weight of transported grains. It occurs in fluvial environments (i.e., driven by a stream of liquid) and in aeolian environments (i.e., wind-blown) and plays a key role in shaping sedimentary landscapes of planetary bodies. NST is a highly fluctuating physical process because of turbulence, surface inhomogeneities, and variations of grain size and shape and packing geometry. Furthermore, the energy of transported grains varies strongly due to variations of their flow exposure duration since their entrainment from the bed. In spite of such variability, we here propose a deterministic model that represents the entire grain motion, including grains that roll and/or slide along the bed, by a periodic saltation motion with rebound laws that describe an average rebound of a grain after colliding with the bed. The model simultaneously captures laboratory and field measurements and discrete element method (DEM)-based numerical simulations of the threshold and rate of equilibrium NST within a factor of about 2, unifying weak and intense transport conditions in oil, water, and air (oil only for threshold). The model parameters have not been adjusted to these measurements but determined from independent data sets. Recent DEM-based numerical simulations (Comola, Gaume, et al., 2019, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019GL082195) suggest that equilibrium aeolian NST on Earth is insensitive to the strength of cohesive bonds between bed grains. Consistently, the model captures cohesive windblown sand and windblown snow conditions despite not explicitly accounting for cohesion.

Abstract:Turbulence in the atmospheric surface layer, especially in deserts and semi-arid regions, significantly affects sand movement. In unstable stratification, turbulence exhibits complex intermittency, complicating its impact on saltation. This study uses wavelet transform analysis to examine the effects of turbulence intermittency in unstable stratification on saltation. Our analysis reveals that in unstable stratification, the energy distribution of turbulence is more dispersed, the intermittent characteristics are more significant, and the intermittent burst duration of streamwise turbulence is longer, while the vertical intermittent burst duration is shorter. The fitting formulas of the energy ratio and stratification stability of the streamwise wind speed, vertical wind speed, and temperature at different frequencies are given. In addition, there is a complex nonlinear relationship between stratification stability and friction velocity on saltation. In unstable stratification, the critical wind speed required for saltation is higher than that of near-neutral, and the jumping speed and horizontal transport are weakened. Moreover, the coherence between wind speed and saltation flux increases significantly at low frequency with the increase in instability, indicating that large-scale motion plays a key role in saltation under these conditions. The more unstable the stratification is, the more obvious the phase difference fluctuation of the low frequency part is, and the more unfavorable the formation of stable saltation sand conditions. This study reveals the turbulence intermittently and its complex effects on sand particle movement in unstable stratification, which is of great significance for predicting and controlling dust storms, land desertification, and soil erosion.

Abstract:To recognize the movement of wind-blown sand saltation, one of the main movements in wind-sands, the initial velocity of lift-off sand particles by wind and collision has been an important problem in the research, either theoretically or experimentally. This paper presents a 2D model of grain/bed impaction under consideration of random distribution of contact points of the grains in the bed, pattern of the granular bed, initial velocity and angle accordingly. After that, a distribution of initial velocity of the lift-off sand particles is deduced out from the proposed impact model. The quantitative results show that some of them are in agreement with those experimental data well.
Large Effects of Particle Size Heterogeneity on Dynamic Saltation Threshold

Abstract:Reliably predicting the geomorphology and climate of planetary bodies requires knowledge of the dynamic threshold wind shear velocity below which saltation transport ceases. Here we measure this threshold in a wind tunnel for four well-sorted and two poorly sorted sand beds by visual means and by a method that exploits a regime shift in the behavior of the surface roughness caused by momentum transfer from the wind to the saltating particles. For our poorly sorted sands, we find that these measurement methods yield different threshold values because, at the smaller visual threshold, relatively coarse particles do not participate in saltation. We further find that both methods yield threshold values that are much larger (60--250\%) for our poorly sorted sands than for our well-sorted sands with similar median particle diameter. In particular, even a rescaling of the dynamic saltation threshold based on the 90th percentile particle diameter rather than the median diameter cannot fully capture this difference, suggesting that relatively very coarse particles have a considerable control on the dynamic threshold. Similar findings were previously reported for water-driven sediment transport. Our findings have important implications for quantitative predictions of saltation transport-related geophysical processes, such as dust aerosol emission.

Saltation Transport Rate in Unsteady Wind Variations

Abstract:Wind flow in the atmospheric boundary layer is usually turbulent. The gusty wind significantly influences the saltation transport which is treated as equilibrium saltation. This study performs one-dimension numerical simulations of unsteady sand saltation to discuss the effects of parameters of periodical wind variations on saltation response and sand transport rate prediction. The results show that unsteady transport rates are larger than steady rates of equivalent mean wind velocity. The ratio of unsteady/steady transport rates increases with the increase of amplitude and frequency. For the average wind velocities much larger than the threshold value, the errors of transport rates predicted by unsteady and steady model are about 10%, while for a wind velocity slightly larger than saltation threshold, the errors will be more than 200%. The sand transport rates are not zero even though the average wind velocity equals (is even smaller than) the threshold value, whereas Q must be zero in the steady model. Finally, an unsteady transport rate prediction formula is proposed which takes mean velocity, fluctuating intensity and period as independent variables.

Abstract:This article presents an approach for developing the probability density function of lift-off speed of sand on the basis of the conventional experiments of sand-flux and the simulation model of saltation movement. To show the efficiency of the obtained distribution of initial speed of lift-off sand from sand bed, finally, some simulations of sand saltation on the basis of a selected lift-off speed function are conducted to predict sand flux and wind profile which are measurable. By comparing the predictions with the experimental measurements, it is found that the predictions from the probability density of lift-off speed obtained in this paper are better than those given in literature.
A Study on the Initiation of Saltation in the Model of Wind-Blown Sand Transport Considering the Effect of Turbulence

Abstract:Turbulence plays an important role in the transport of wind-blown sand. If the model of wind-blown sand transport considering the effect of turbulence is to be established, the influence of turbulence needs to be introduced into the four sub-processes of saltation, namely (1) aerodynamic entrainment, (2) the subsequent trajectories of saltating particles, (3) the collision of particles with the soil surface and the subsequent splashing of surface particles into the fluid stream, and (4) the modification of the wind profile through momentum transfer between the wind flow and saltating particles. In this paper, turbulence is introduced into two models predicting the first and the third sub-processes of saltation by the aerodynamic drag force and the creep velocity of surface particles respectively. The effects of turbulence on the two sub-processes are discussed. Our results show that turbulence has an important effect on aerodynamic entrainment. That is, when the wind velocity exceeds the threshold velocity, about 20% of all surface particles are unable to lift-off from the bed surface. The effect of turbulence on aerodynamic entrainment is mainly caused by large-scale turbulent motions. The model of number of lifting sand particles caused by aerodynamic drag force is modified by introducing a lift-off rate $$\sigma$$ (i.e., the ratio of the number of actually lifting sand particles judged by our theory to the total number of lifting sand particles judged by existing theory), which is $$N_{a} = \sigma \times \zeta \rho \;(u_{\tau }^{2} - u_{c}^{2} )$$ , where σ is defined as the lift-off rate, uτ is the friction wind velocity, uc is the threshold velocity, ρ is the air density, and ζ is the empirical constant. In addition, the results show that the cumulative distribution of creep velocity under the direct action of turbulence (which can be characterized by the SGompertz distribution) has little effect on the velocity distributions of rebound particles and ejected particles.

Abstract:Saltation is an important geological process and the primary source of atmospheric mineral dust aerosols. Unfortunately, no studies to date have been able to precisely reproduce the saltation process because of the simplified theoretical models used. For example, sand particles in most of the existing wind sand movement models are considered to be spherical, the effects of the sand shape on the structure of the wind sand flow are rarely studied, and the effect of mid-air collision is usually neglected. In fact, sand grains are rarely round in natural environments. In this paper, we first analyzed the drag coefficients, drag forces, and starting friction wind speeds of sand grains with different shapes in the saltation process, then established a sand saltation model that considers the coupling effect between wind and the sand grains, the effect of the mid-air collision of sand grains, and the effect of the sand grain shape. Based on this model, the saltation process and sand transport rate of non-spherical sand particles were simulated. The results show that the sand shape has a significant impact on the saltation process; for the same wind speed, the sand transport rates varied for different shapes of sand grains by as much as several-fold. Therefore, sand shape is one of the important factors affecting wind-sand movement.

Abstract:Abstract Splash functions delineate the intricate interaction between wind‐driven particles and the bed. However, due to limitations in measurement methods, achieving a comprehensive understanding of splash functions remains challenging. In this study, we utilized a high‐speed system and particle trajectory tracking algorithm to reconstruct 857 collision events involving natural sand particles obtained from field samples and artificial glass microspheres interacting with a bed composed of analogous particles in a wind tunnel. During the experiments, the ratio of the wind shear velocity ( u * ) to the impact threshold ( u *ti ) consistently ranged between approximately 1.22 and 1.79. Our findings indicate that the impact angle remains independent of both impact velocity and particle size, maintaining an approximate value of 10.5 ± 6.5°. The evaluation of splash functions depends on the criterion used to define ejection, that is, the ratio of the centroid's height of the liftoff particles to their particle size ( H / d ). Additionally, at the same critical height ( H / d = 1.5), our splash functions show differences of varying degrees from previous experiments and theoretical studies performed under no wind conditions. We believe that the main reason for these differences may be that the energy exchange between the bed surface and the airflow increases the looseness of the large‐particle (>0.1 mm) bed surface. These findings hold significant implications for accurately modeling sand‐bed collisions in natural environments.

Abstract:The wind-blown sand saltating movement is mainly categorized into two mechanical processes, that is, the interaction between the moving sand particles and the wind in the saltation layer, and the collisions of incident particles with sand bed, and the latter produces a lift-off velocity of a sand particle moving into saltation. In this Letter a methodology of phenomenological analysis is presented to get probability density (distribution) function (pdf) of the lift-off velocity of sand particles from sand bed based on the stochastic particle–bed collision. After the sand particles are dealt with by uniform circular disks and a 2D collision between an incident particle and the granular bed is employed, we get the analytical formulas of lift-off velocity of ejected and rebound particles in saltation, which are functions of some random parameters such as angle and magnitude of incident velocity of the impacting particles, impact and contact angles between the collision particles, and creeping velocity of sand particles, etc. By introducing the probability density functions (pdf's) of these parameters in communion with all possible patterns of sand bed and all possible particle–bed collisions, and using the essential arithmetic of multi-dimension random variables' pdf, the pdf's of lift-off velocities are deduced out and expressed by the pdf's of the random parameters in the collisions. The numerical results of the distributions of lift-off velocities display that they agree well with experimental ones.

Abstract:The dataset comprises 5 tables including sample information, grain size distributions, grain roundness, sand petrography and heavy-mineral tables. The sample information table includes River/Dune types, names, locality, collected people, collected year and spatial coordinate, whereas other tables provide detailed sand textural and compositional information. The detailed textural and compositional dataset allow us to evaluate the differences between fluvial and aeolian sand in the river-fed Yarlung Tsangpo system, and The "multiple window" approach provides opportunity to explore intersample and intrasample variability, and help to understand the grain-size control on sand texture and composition. The dataset is a supplement to the manuscript "Fluvial-aeolian interaction and compositional variability in the river-fed Yarlung Tsangpo dune system (southern Tibet)" by Liang et al. Abstract:In deserts the temperature of the sand bed can reach up to more than 50 degrees C, however, existing knowledge on the lift-off and falling velocities and angles of sand particles in windblown sand flux is based mainly on experimental results over a temperature range of 20 degrees C to 30 degrees C. Consequently, existing experimental results cannot reflect the actual interaction between saltating sands and the bed. In this study, the influence of the sand bed temperature on the probability distribution of lift-off and falling velocities and angles of sand particles is investigated through an improved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. Results demonstrate that the distribution shape of lift-off and falling velocities and angles of sand particles is not greatly influenced by the temperature of sand bed, however it has a certain influence on the center of the probability distributions of horizontal velocities, as well as the average, decay constant and amplitude of the distributions of vertical velocities and angles. We present formulas to describe the probability distributions of lift-off and falling velocities and angles with regard to the influence of sand bed temperature. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Improved Parameterization for Effect of Soil Moisture on Threshold Friction Velocity for Saltation Activity Based on Observations in the Taklimakan Desert

Abstract:Soil moisture is an important factor in saltation activity as it affects the threshold friction velocity. Based on observed data of wind speed, soil moisture, and saltation from March 2008 to February 2018 in the Taklimakan Desert, the effects of soil moisture on the threshold friction velocity for saltation activity are analyzed, and an improved parameterization for the effect of soil moisture on threshold friction velocity is developed. The results illustrate that soil moisture significantly impacted threshold friction velocity when the soil moisture was greater than 0.025 m(3)/m(3) in the study area. The corrected parameterization of the threshold friction velocity of moist soil can effectively lower the sensitivity of threshold friction velocity to soil moisture. The threshold friction velocities were 48.7%, 49.5%, and 32.1% lower, and the horizontal dust fluxes were 66.6%, 69.2%, and 65.8% greater for soil moistures of 1.0%, 2.0%, and 5.0%, respectively. Compared with the observed horizontal dust fluxes, the error is reduced by 80.2% when the corrected parameterization was used, and the correlation coefficient between the calculated result and the observations increased from 0.87 to 0.91. The results demonstrate that the effects of soil moisture on dust emissions are nonnegligible.
Saltation and Suspension of Wind-Blown Particle Movement

Abstract:Several factors that affect the trajectories of sand particles in a wind-blown sand flux are analyzed by considering the stochastic movement of sand particles transported within turbulent flow in the atmospheric boundary layer. The results show that there are remarkably different trajectories for particles with the same diameter, the same vertical liftoff velocity from sand bed and the same friction velocity of wind because of the presence of turbulence flow. The vertical fluctuating velocity of sand particles can be regarded as a reflection of the transport mode, which is related to not only the diameters and liftoff velocity of sand particles but also the shear stress velocity of wind. The critical liftoff velocity and the fraction of each transport mode are calculated for the given particle diameter and friction velocity of wind. A comparison of the predicted fraction and the statistical fraction with and without the wind-sand couple effect is made.
Effects of the Mid-Air Collision on Sand Saltation

Abstract:As to the fact that the effects of saltating particles’ mid-air collision on the sand transport rate are often neglected in the current theoretical models describing sand saltation movement, expressions to calculate velocity diversity of saltating particles after mid-air collision are presented through collision theory of hard ball in this paper. Then, the theoretical model of the wind blown sand movement at the steady state, taking account of coupled interaction between saltation particles and wind, is combined with the model of the mid-air collision probability to calculate the saltating particles’ mass flux at heights, the sand transport rate, and further, their changing rules. The comparison of the results with those when the mid-air collision is not considered suggests that the mass flux at heights and the sand transport rate in this paper are less, and much closer, respectively, to the corresponding experimental values. The difference between the sand mass fluxes without and with consideration of mid-air collision increases at first, and then decreases as the height increases, exhibiting the stratified characteristics.
Characterization of Wind‐blown Sand with Near‐wall Motions and Turbulence: from Grain‐scale Distributions to Sediment Transport

Abstract:The impact and lift-off parameters of particles play a key role in the understanding of the saltation mechanisms in aeolian environment. However, limitations of experimental instruments and numerical simulation may result in unreliable motion parameters near the bed surface. Here, we report on the impact and lift-off parameters of saltating particles in wind-blown sand predicted with Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) or large eddy simulation (LES) and the three-dimensional stochastic particle-bed collision model. Simulation results showed new phenomena, including: (i) a reduced mean impact velocity and an increased probability of lift-off velocities distribution at left extreme with increasing free stream velocity, and (ii) two peaks of the impact angle distribution. These phenomena disappear when the statistical height is increased to 5 times the particle diameter, suggesting that the near-wall motions are not negligible. In addition, when turbulence is considered and wind velocity increases, the extreme value of velocity distribution increases, impact angle distribution shows a longer tail, and mean impact and lift-off parameters increase (except impact velocity). We conclude that new velocity distribution with near-wall motions and turbulence will significantly improve the prediction of aeolian transport flux.

Abstract:In a wind-blown sand layer, it has been found that wind transport of particles is always associated with separation of electric charge. This electrification in turn produces some electrostatic forces in addition to the gravitational and fluid friction forces that affect the movement of saltating sand particles, further, the wind-blown sand saltation. To evaluate this effect quantitatively, this paper presents a simulation of evolution of wind-blown sand grains after the electrostatic forces exerted on the grains are taken into account in the wind feedback mechanism of wind-blown saltation. That is, the coupling interaction between the wind flow and the saltating sand particles is employed in the simulation to the non-stationary wind and sand flows when considering fluid drag, gravitation, and a kind of electrostatic force generated from a distribution of electric field changing with time in the evolution process of the sand saltation. On the basis of the proposed simulation model, a numerical program is given to perform the simulation of this dynamic process and some characteristic quantities, e.g., duration of the system to reach the steady state, and curves of the saltating grain number, grain transport rate, mass-flux profile, and wind profile varying with time during the non-stationary evolution are displayed. The obtained numerical results exhibit that the electrostatic force is closely related to the average charge-to-mass ratio of sand particles and has obvious influence on these characteristic quantities. The obtained results also show that the duration of the system to reach the steady state, the sand transport rate and the mass flux profile coincide well with experimental results by Shao and Raupach (1992) when the average charge-to-mass ratio of sand particles is 60 μC/kg for the sand particles with average diameter of 0.25 mm. When the average charge-to-mass ratios of sand particles are taken as some other certain values, the calculation results still show that the mass flux profiles are well in agreement with the experimental data by Rasmussen and Mikkelsen (1998) for another category of sand particles, which tell us that the electrostatic force is one of main factors that have to be considered in the research of mechanism of wind-blown sand saltation.

Abstract:The data were used in the paper "Response of flow and saltating particle characteristics to bed roughness and particle spatial density" which was submitted to "Journal of Geophysical Research-Earth Surface". In this paper, the effects of bed roughness and particle spatial density on the bedload transport are investigated by numerical simulations. The distributions of key parameters for saltation, including their changes, are assessed using the PDF curves. It is found that bed roughness is likely composed of particles of equivalent size for fine particles.
