Abstract:Sustainability is critical for biomass feedstock supply and crop production. Most studies on agricultural residue estimations ignored the loss of soil organic carbon (SOC) and thus possibly overestimated its resource potential. This study estimated the resource potential of using agricultural residues for bioenergy in China, considering soil conservation, collection cost, and future changes in yield and management. This study carried out a spatial explicit assessment of sustainable agricultural residue potential and their on-farm collection costs. Rothamsted carbon model was used to quantify the grid-specific amount of residue to be retained in soil for sustainable purposes. The results showed that 226 Mt of residues could be collected annually to maintain the current SOC level, which ranges from 0.1% to 39.0% at a mean of 1.1% nationwide. To achieve SOC level above 2% over all arable land in China, the collectable residues would be reduced to 24 Mt. Future yield improvements and no-tillage would significantly increase the collectable residues to 117, 383, and 514 Mt in 2050 under SOC scenarios of above 2%, above 1%, and maintaining current level, respectively. Maintaining the current SOC level, 495 Mt of residues could be collected in 2050 with a cost <= 0.98 $.GJ(-1), which equals 8.6 EJ of energy potential. From the view of high supply potentials and low collection costs, Shandong, Henan, and Jiangsu provinces are the preferred regions to develop residue-based bioenergy production. The results highlighted the differences of resource potential among various SOC scenarios and spatial heterogeneity of residue resource among regions.
A Spatiotemporal Assessment of Field Residues of Rice, Maize, and Wheat at Provincial and County Levels in China

Abstract:AbstractChina has a huge resource potential for biomass‐based renewable energy development, but the resources of field residues are still not effectively used. Rice, maize, and wheat made up 89% of staple crop production in China in 2009. A comprehensive assessment of field residues of these three crops is necessary for the development of biomass‐based industries. This research was based on multiyear county‐level data of crop production, area and yield, as well as the crop phenology information from agrometeorological stations. Spatial and temporal analyses were conducted to quantify the spatial patterns, seasonal variations, and temporal trends of the three major field residues. The mean amount of field residue of rice, maize, and wheat was 470.8 Mt/year from 2002 to 2009. Rice residue topped the field residues at 188.5 Mt/year, followed by maize (152.6 Mt/year) and wheat (129.8 Mt/year). The resource supply of field residues varied temporally throughout the season, where peak months are May, June, September, and October. The resources of all three field residues increased from 2002 to 2009, topped by maize residues at a rate of 10.0 Mt/year. Spatially, high production counties had the fast growth rate and a strong positive spatial autocorrelation. The results showed that the intersection area of East and South Central regions has a spatially concentrated residue density and a stable supply for 5 months. The region can be considered as a suitable region for bioenergy development. A better understanding of spatial and temporal distribution of crop residues could facilitate strategic and tactical bioenergy planning.

Abstract:<p>This study proposes an approach for estimating the sustainable potential of agricultural residue biomass, with the novel characteristic of combining regional annual crop yields, topographic and legislative restrictions, as well as local soil organic matter and soil erosion considerations in the sustainable potential assessment. The proposed approach is applied in the case of China. To ensure accuracy and reliability of the evaluation, the theoretical potential was first calculated based on the residue-to-product ratio (RPR) in China at a regional level. Based on the theoretical potential, a geographic information system (GIS) was then employed to determine the technical potential and sustainable potential of agricultural residues in China. The theoretical, technical and sustainable potential of agricultural residues were found to be equal to 1001.47, 565.82 and 143.20 Mt per year, respectively. Up to 20% of agricultural residues are technically collectable but not currently utilized as resources; if appropriately utilized as an energy source, these residues could generate up to 108 TWh of bio-based power per year. However, for sustainability purposes, the maximum energy potential is limited to 27.8 TWh/year. It was also found that among China's 31 provincial regions, Heilongjiang holds the greatest potential for the establishment of an agricultural residue-based economy by virtue of its resource availability.</p>

Spatial Distribution of Usable Biomass Feedstock and Technical Bioenergy Potential in China

Abstract:Abstract Bioenergy will play an intimate and critical role in energy supply and carbon mitigation in the future. In recent years, “customizing the development of bioenergy to local conditions” and “prioritizing distributed utilization” have been the two key principles that have been released by the Chinese government to promote the national‐ and provincial‐level development of bioenergy. While many recognize the importance of bioenergy in achieving low‐carbon transition, little is known about the high‐resolution distribution of usable biomass feedstock and technical bioenergy potential in China, which brings about uncertainties and additional challenges for creating localized utilization plans. We propose a new assessment framework that integrates crop growth models, a land suitability assessment, and the geographic information systems to address these knowledge gaps. Distributions of 11 types of usable biomass feedstock and three kinds of technical bioenergy potential are mapped out through specific transformation technologies at 1 km resolution. At the national level, the final technical biogas potential is 1.91 EJ. The technical bioethanol potential (0.04–0.96 EJ) from the energy crop can supply 0.13–3.12 times the bioethanol demand for the consumption of E10 gasoline in 2015. The technical heat potential (1.06 EJ) can meet 20% of the demand for heating in all provinces (5.38 EJ). Most of the 2020 bioenergy goals can be achieved, excluding that for bioethanol, which will need to require more cellulosic ethanol from residues. At the provincial level, Henan and Inner Mongolia have the potential to develop clean heating alternatives via the substitution of agroforestry residues for coal. The results can provide a systematic analysis of the distribution of biomass feedstocks and technical bioenergy potential in China. With economic factors taken into consideration in further research, it can also support national and provincial governments in making bioenergy development plans in an effective and timely manner.

Abstract:Assessing biomass resource potential is essential for China’s ambitious goals of carbon neutrality, rural revitalization, and poverty eradication. To fill the data gap of high spatial resolution biomass resources in China, this study estimates the biomass resource potential for all types of lignocellulosic biomass feedstock at 1 km resolution in 2018, including 9 types of agricultural residues, 11 types of forestry residues, and 5 types of energy crops. By combining the statistical accounting method and the GIS-based method, this study develops a transparent and comprehensive assessment framework, which is in accordance with the principle of food security, forest land and pasture protection, and biodiversity protection. In the end, we organize and store the data in different formats (GeoTIFF, NetCDF, and Excel) for GIS users, integrated modelers, and policymakers. The reliability of this high spatial resolution dataset has been proved by comparing the aggregated data at the subnational and national levels with the existing literature. This dataset has numerous potential uses and is a crucial input to many bioenergy-related studies.
A Fine-Resolution Estimation of the Biomass Resource Potential Across China from 2020 to 2100

Abstract:Large-scale development of bioenergy is indispensable in dealing with the climate change challenge. The biomass resource may become a limiting factor for the utilization of bioenergy in mitigating carbon emissions in the future. For supporting formulating a feasible long-term strategy for bioenergy development, it is crucial to conduct an ex-ante estimation of the biomass resource potential and accurately capture its variability at fine resolution. Although many previous studies have been carried out to estimate biomass resource potential, there is still a lack of a systematic assessment of the long-term spatio-temporal distribution of resource potential of multiple domestic biomasses in the context of future changes of human and natural factors. To address this research gap, this study proposed a comprehensive framework coupled with the crop growth models, RS-GIS methods, statistical downscaling, and multi-source dataset to evaluate the biomass resource potential and its variability across China at 1-km resolution from 2020 to 2100. This study identified the suitable areas for bioenergy development in the future, and analyzed the impact of climate change and land use change on biomass resource potential. This study also explored the role of bioenergy potential playing in China's energy supply under the temperature rise control target. Results indicate that the bioenergy potential of residues and energy crops in China will reach 5.11–11.01 EJ in China in 2100, only accounting for 5.3%-12.2% of the national primary energy supply demand in 2100.
An Integrated Assessment of the Potential of Agricultural and Forestry Residues for Energy Production in China

Abstract:Biomass has been widely recognized as an important energy source with high potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while minimizing environmental pollution. In this study, we employ the Global Change Assessment Model to estimate the potential of agricultural and forestry residue biomass for energy production in China. Potential availability of residue biomass as an energy source was analyzed for the 21st century under different climate policy scenarios. Currently, the amount of total annual residue biomass, averaged over 2003-2007, is around 15519PJ in China, consisting of 10818PJ from agriculture residues (70%) and 4701PJ forestry residues (30%). We estimate that 12693PJ of the total biomass is available for energy production, with 66% derived from agricultural residue and 34% from forestry residue. Most of the available residue is from south central China (3347PJ), east China (2862PJ) and south-west China (2229PJ), which combined exceeds 66% of the total national biomass. Under the reference scenario without carbon tax, the potential availability of residue biomass for energy production is projected to be 3380PJ by 2050 and 4108PJ by 2095, respectively. When carbon tax is imposed, biomass availability increases substantially. For the CCS 450ppm scenario, availability of biomass increases to 9002PJ (2050) and 11524PJ (2095), respectively. For the 450ppm scenario without CCS, 9183 (2050) and 11150PJ (2095) residue biomass, respectively, is projected to be available. Moreover, the implementation of CCS will have a little impact on the supply of residue biomass after 2035. Our results suggest that residue biomass has the potential to be an important component in China's sustainable energy production portfolio. As a low carbon emission energy source, climate change policies that involve carbon tariff and CCS technology promote the use of residue biomass for energy production in a low carbon-constrained world.

Abstract:Bioenergy crop cultivation for lignocellulosic biomass is increasingly important for future climate mitigation, and it is assumed on large scales in integrated assessment models (IAMs) that develop future land use change scenarios consistent with the dual constraint of sufficient food production and deep decarbonization for low climate-warming targets. In most global vegetation models, there is no specific representation of crops producing lignocellulosic biomass, resulting in simulation biases of biomass yields and other carbon outputs, and in turn of future bioenergy production. Here, we introduced four new plant functional types (PFTs) to represent four major lignocellulosic bioenergy crops, eucalypt, poplar and willow, Miscanthus, and switchgrass, in the global process-based vegetation model ORCHIDEE. New parameterizations of photosynthesis, carbon allocation, and phenology are proposed based on a compilation of field measurements. A specific harvest module is further added to the model to simulate the rotation of bioenergy tree PFTs based on their age dynamics. The resulting ORCHIDEE-MICT-BIOENERGY model is applied at 296 locations where field measurements of harvested biomass are available for different bioenergy crops. The new model can generally reproduce the global bioenergy crop yield observations. Biases in the model results related to grid-based simulations versus the point-scale measurements and the lack of fertilization and fertilization management practices in the model are discussed. This study sheds light on the importance of properly representing bioenergy crops for simulating their yields. The parameterizations of bioenergy crops presented here are generic enough to be applicable in other global vegetation models.

Abstract:China's energy needs and its environment are facing great challenges because of the country's rapid urbanization and industrialization. It is China's strategic choice to exploit renewable energy to guarantee its energy security and reduce CO2 emissions. Crop residue has been identified and targeted by the Chinese government as a promising renewable energy resource. The purposes of this study are to investigate the potential supply of crop residue nationally and regionally, the vertical value chain from the field to final usage of these crop residues, as well as to conduct cost-benefit analysis on power plant-based crop residue. Our results show that the large amount of crop residue in China has great potential to meet the country's demand for renewable energy. Crop residues, however, are distributed unequally across regions. Therefore the use of crop residues to produce energy should be different across provinces, especially with respect to large power generation plants. Government supports right now are critical for power plants based on crop residue to survive. Based on our findings, it is suggested that China should attach more importance to technology innovation and creative policy reforms to improve the overall efficiency of the industry and reduce the cost of feedstock. Mapping the Yields of Lignocellulosic Bioenergy Crops from Observations at the Global Scale

Abstract:Most scenarios from integrated assessment models (IAMs) that project greenhouse gas emissions include the use of bioenergy as a means to reduce CO2 emissions or even to achieve negative emissions (together with CCS – carbon capture and storage). The potential amount of CO2 that can be removed from the atmosphere depends, among others, on the yields of bioenergy crops, the land available to grow these crops and the efficiency with which CO2 produced by combustion is captured. While bioenergy crop yields can be simulated by models, estimates of the spatial distribution of bioenergy yields under current technology based on a large number of observations are currently lacking. In this study, a random-forest (RF) algorithm is used to upscale a bioenergy yield dataset of 3963 observations covering Miscanthus, switchgrass, eucalypt, poplar and willow using climatic and soil conditions as explanatory variables. The results are global yield maps of five important lignocellulosic bioenergy crops under current technology, climate and atmospheric CO2 conditions at a 0.5∘×0.5∘ spatial resolution. We also provide a combined “best bioenergy crop” yield map by selecting one of the five crop types with the highest yield in each of the grid cells, eucalypt and Miscanthus in most cases. The global median yield of the best crop is 16.3 t DM ha−1 yr−1 (DM – dry matter). High yields mainly occur in the Amazon region and southeastern Asia. We further compare our empirically derived maps with yield maps used in three IAMs and find that the median yields in our maps are > 50 % higher than those in the IAM maps. Our estimates of gridded bioenergy crop yields can be used to provide bioenergy yields for IAMs, to evaluate land surface models or to identify the most suitable lands for future bioenergy crop plantations. Bioenergy Production Potential of 16 Energy Crops on Marginal Land in China

Abstract:AbstractAlternative energy sources, derived from biomass feedstocks, are important for China’s energy security. To evaluate China’s capacity for bioenergy in the future, Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were adopted to identify potentially productive marginal areas for the growth of 16 energy crops and to comprehensively estimate their biomass and bioenergy production potential under three scenarios. The results showed that a total of 267.23 Mha (i.e., million hectare) of marginal land was available for energy crop production. When assessing the suitability of individual environments for each type of energy crop, the largest total land area of a lignocellulosic energy crop, an oil energy crop, and a lignocellulosic energy tree were 3.64 Mha (Miscanthus spp.), 45.44 Mha (Jatropha curcas L.), and 63.55 Mha [Haloxylon ammodendron (C. A. Mey.) Bunge], respectively. In addition, the proposed production of bioethanol [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], biodiesel [Swida wilsoniana (Wanger.) Sojak], and bio-electricity [H. ammodendron] in the baseline scenario met 31.83%, 26.08%, and 9.2% of ethanol demand for E10, diesel, and electricity in 2016, respectively. Furthermore, if upland and forest land could be used to produce bioenergy, the bioethanol substitution rates of ethanol for E100, diesel, and electric power were calculated as 62.63%, 153.94%, and 60.47%, respectively, for 2040. The results indicated that China’s future energy demands could not be satisfied by simply depending on energy crops in most situations. Future bioenergy should be developed based on reliable supplies of several types of biomass materials and dedicated biochemical or thermochemical conversion processes, among other renewable energy sources.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the bioenergy crop production function of land use, combined with the current situation of Chinese land use, this paper analyzes and discusses the cultivation of energy plants and the bioenergy crop production function of land use. Results show that there is a lot of unused land and marginal land to plant bioenergy crops to perform the bioenergy crop production function of land use, which have a great potential, and currently there are no food production problems. Therefore, it is very important for China to emphasize bioenergy crops planting in order to fully use land resources, moderate the energy crisis and increase farmers' income.

Abstract:The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has abundant biomass resources, which are difficult to collect and thus are underutilized. However, the potential estimation of biomass energy can result in a comprehensive understanding of bioenergy resources in order to establish a technology roadmap for the region’s bioenergy development. Therefore, it is essential to estimate the potential of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei biomass resources and bioenergy utilization. In this paper, the amount of main biomass resources for possible energy use and bioenergy utilization are calculated based on a statistical data estimation method for crop residues; human, poultry, and livestock manure; and municipal solid wastes. On the basis of biomass resources and bioenergy utilization potential, the technology roadmap is established. The results show that the amount for available biomass energy use is unevenly distributed in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and the largest amount of resources is crop residues (36.52 million tons or 18.26 million tons coal equivalent). The biogas from human, poultry, and livestock manure and densified solids from crop residue technology roadmap is suitable for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Abstract:This paper addresses the challenge of meeting increasing energy needs by assessing the potential of bioenergy as a sustainable resource option in South Central Texas. Available agricultural crop residues suitable for bioenergy production are evaluated from the 21 counties in South Central Texas Regional Water Planning Area (Region L). The residues produced and available for bioenergy are quantified according to the production areas for each field crop and tree area. Residue-to-product ratios of field crops are determined according to crop type and production quantity. Biomass potential of trees is calculated based on tree density and biomass production per tree. The results demonstrate that the potential productions of utilizable agricultural wastes are in the range of 898.7 t kt–1421.39 kt for Region L. The average annual energy potential is estimated at 19.27 PJ, and ranges between 14.36 and 24.18 PJ. The average potential biomass-based electricity production could compensate significant amount of coal-based electricity generated in the Texas and when agricultural wastes are available.

Future landscape of renewable fuel resources: Current and future conservation and utilization of main biofuel crops in China

Abstract:Biofuel crops are one of the most promising regenerative alternatives of energy resources to fossil fuels. Revealing the current and future resource distribution patterns of biofuel crops will promote the development of green energies and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we first conducted a comprehensive and systematic analysis on the distribution patterns of main biofuel crops in China, using 22,352 occurrence records of 31 biofuel plant species and thirty-year environmental variables (1970-2000) with maximum entropy modeling, as well as nine-year field investigation of land use (2011-2019). The results showed that there were six different sub-regions for main biofuel crops in China, while Southwest China and South China were determined as the main concentrated potential regions. Specifically, the ranges of these regions were wider than those of current land use of main biofuel crops in China, indicating great potential for industrial cultivation. Moreover, the main biofuel crops had diverse changing patterns including increase, decrease and unstable under future climate change. Among them, biofuel crops with increase pattern (six crops) and decrease pattern (seven crops) should receive high attention for future resource utilization and production. Further field validation results confirmed that the above distribution patterns were mainly determined by increasing global temperature and precipitation. Collectively, these results will provide valuable references for the utilization and development of main biofuel resources under climate change in China, thereby shedding light on studies regarding the production of green biofuels globally.

Abstract:Addressing the pressing need for sustainable bioenergy sources amid the growing climate crisis, this study investigates potential crop bioenergy output in the Jianghan Plain, Hubei, China. The research leverages Backpropagation Artificial Neural Network models to predict the accumulated net primary productivity (NPP) of various crops, i.e., single rice, double rice, maize, and wheat, in Jianghan Plain. The models highlight a strong predictive performance, with the SE model achieving an R 2 of 0.83 and wheat model an R 2 of 0.90, implying these models can be utilized reliably for future NPP forecasting. Our evaluation of past and future NPP values reveals a negative correlation between the increase in NPP values and observed temperature trends. This emphasizes the significant impact of temperature on crop bioenergy potential. For future NPP predictions, scenario ( S 3a ) under Temperature Control strategies at medium-effort mitigation yields a favourable outcome for all crops, particularly SE. Additionally, the results suggest that aggressive decarbonization and global warming mitigation strategies are vital for enhancing NPP values. However, the study also highlights potential trade-offs and stresses the necessity for region-specific climate reconciliation strategies; for instance, midland counties benefit from temperature control, whereas the sideline favours CO 2 mitigation. The study further investigates the spatial distribution of potential bioenergy, with the southwestern part of the plain holding more bioenergy potential, providing an essential reference for future energy planning. By 2030, in Jianghan Plain, when fully integrated with reasonable climate responses, there could be substantial bioenergy potential from crop residues reaching (1.2–1.9)×10 9 MJ, which is 11% less than the current.

Abstract:Aimed at the production of clean biomass energy,according to the current study on the characteristics of energy plants,and considering China's actual situation such as few cultivated lands,diversified climate and soil,we selected 4 indexes from different aspect to evaluate the value of energy plants,these indexes are chemical composition,biomass yield,ecological adaptation,heat value,and according to its difference,importance,and whether or not can be directly contributed to energy production,their weight are set at 0.3,0.3,0.25,0.15 respectively.By the evaluation of 15 kinds of energy plants,we found that Woody plants such as short-rotation hybrid poplar(Populus spl),Fast-growing willow(Salix Viminal),grasses such as switchgrass(Panicum Virgatum),mis- canthus(Miscanthus spp.Anderss.),king grass(Saccharum Sinese),which characteristics of biomass and quality are the best,are most suitable for production of clean biomass energy.There- fore,this set of indexes can reflect the diversity of the characteristics and potetial of energy plants. In the view of the actual production of fuel ethanol,grasses have even more potential than woody plants to grow for biomass energy due to their low cost,simple management,high-yielding,and short production cycle.

Abstract:In the rapid economic development today, the sources of energy and environmental issues have become increasingly prominent. At present, out country adopted a series of measures to improve the resources supply capacity, include to vigorously develop renewable energy. With the development and utilization of biomass energy has been paid close attention. This paper establishes three comprehensive evaluation models on biomass energy utilization’s potential applications in the region, using the method of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, hierarchical weight analysis and factor analysis by means of MATLAB, SAS software. According these models we analyze biomass energy utilization’s development prospect and geographical distribution and expound several suggestions on adjustment of biomass energy utilization status in China.

Evaluation of energy-oriented utilization potential of main Chinese crop residues based on soil protection functions

Abstract:The return of crop residue to soils can prevent soil and water erosion,maintain soil organic matter and plant nutrient balance,etc.Meanwhile,the utilization of crop residue energy can relieve energy stress and improve energy structure in China.Therefore,it is important for the development of ecological agriculture and the sustainable use of agricultural biomass to evaluate ecological potential of crop residues in terms of energy utilization and protection of soil functions.To this end,this study first advanced a concept of Ecological Straw Returning Amount with the consideration of soil and water conservation,soil organic matter maintaining and crop yield increase.Then a scenario analysis method was used to design optimal ecological straw return of different crops.Three scenarios (low,medium and high return) were designed for each crop residue return.The ecological potential of straw energy use was not only affected by ecological straw return,but influenced by crop planting area,per-unit crop yield,crop planting structure and other crop residue uses such as industrial and agricultural uses.Therefore a bottom up dynamic analysis model that was coupled with Gray Neural Network and linear regression analysis was built to calculate ecological potential of straw energy utilization in different regions of China.Ecological potential of energy-oriented utilization of crop residues of different regions was evaluated from three aspects — spatial distribution,resource density and residual resource components.Then based on the direct straw-fired power generation and cellulosic ethanol project,some recommendations were put forward for the development of crop residue energy utilization.The study revealed that:1) In low,medium and high scenario conditions,ecological potentials of straw in terms of energy utilization were respectively 2.28 × 108 tons,1.37 × 108 tons and 7.76 × 107 tons,with crop residual densities of 172 t·km-2,103 t·km-2 and 58 t·km-2.Available ecological straw resource for the production of bio-energy comprised mainly of paddy straw,potato straw and wheat straw under low and medium scenario conditions,and mainly of potato straw and sugar straw under high scenario condition.The resource was mainly distributed in Henan,Shandong,Heilongjiang and Sichuan Provinces under the three scenario conditions.2) Under low scenario condition,residue resource density and total amount of straw in the provinces in mainland China (with the exception of Beijing,Tianjin,Shanghai and Tibet) met the requirement for 6 MW direct straw-fired power generation that was the equivalent of an annual output of 10 000 tons of cellulosic ethanol.Under the medium scenario,only the crop straw resources of Fujian,Guangdong,Guangxi,Hainan and Chongqing were suitable for an annual output of 50 000 tons of cellulosic ethanol.A 25 MW direct straw-fired power generation or an annual output of 50 000 tons of cellulosic ethanol was possible for Fujian,Guangdong,Guangxi,Hainan and Chongqing under the high scenario condition.

Abstract:A review was conducted on models of production, strengths, existing problems and development trend in using wetland plants for energy production. The plants grown in constructed wetland are advantageous due to no need for extra fertilization, high biomass production, and high species diversity, they can be used as one of the suitable raw material resources for biomass briquette fuel, biogas and bioethanol production. Models of using plant biomass for bioenergy production will be developed to achieve the harmonization among energy need, wastewater treatment and environmental protection.
