Abstract:Reservoir landslides are typical geohazards with sophisticated thermo‐hydro‐mechanical interactions. However, direct observations of subsurface multi‐physical processes in bank slopes remain rare. Herein we present the design, implementation and evaluation of an innovative fiber‐optic nerve system based on weak‐reflection fiber Bragg grating to monitor a giant landslide located in the Three Gorges Reservoir region, China. The system is capable of measuring and imaging spatiotemporal distributions of temperature, moisture and strain along boreholes in near real‐time. Such visual profiles offer unique insights into the subsurface thermo‐hydro‐mechanical link between external conditions and geotechnical deformation, making it possible to decipher the substantial trigger of accelerated movements. Multi‐physical responses at depths of interest also enable us to better understand the evolution mechanism of reservoir landslides. Fiber‐optic nerve sensing can synergize with remote sensing and surface‐based technologies to build a space‐sky‐ground‐subsurface integrated monitoring system for landslides.

Abstract:Monitoring evolution process of subsurface geo-interfaces in active slow-moving landslides can help understand landslide thermo-hydro-mechanical dynamics and predict potential landslide hazards. However, characterizing the behavior of these geo-interfaces and revealing their interactions remain challenging due to the general lack of high-resolution subsurface observations. To this end, we propose a novel fiber optic nerve sensing (FONS) system based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) to sense the temperature, moisture and strain of geomaterials along a borehole in nearly real-time. The system is able to accurately locate and identify multiple potential slip surfaces and other critical geo-interface behaviors that may be relevant to landslide instability. The measurements confirm the foremost contribution of short-duration high-intensity extreme rainfall to accelerating landslide movement. We also attempted to employ machine learning algorithms based on classification principles to predict what hydrometeorological regimes would drive an accelerated deformation event. These subsurface data will allow us to investigate the multi-physical characteristics of geo-interfaces from daily to annual and even multi-annual scales and link cyclic thermo-hydro-mechanical external conditions to progressive failure. This work highlights the increasing impact of extreme weather events on landslide geohazards and the importance of multidisciplinary approaches for accurate prediction and early warning. Integrating FONS with remote sensing and ground-based technologies can create a comprehensive space-sky-ground-subsurface monitoring framework for landslides.
Thermo-hydro-poro-mechanical responses of a reservoir-induced landslide tracked by high-resolution fiber optic sensing nerves

Abstract:Thermo-poro-mechanical responses along sliding zone/surface have been extensively studied. However, it has not been recognized that the potential contribution of other crucial engineering geological interfaces beyond the slip surface to progressive failure. Here, we aim to investigate the subsurface multi-physics of reservoir landslides under two extreme hydrologic conditions (i.e. wet and dry), particularly within sliding masses. Based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) technology, we employ special-purpose fiber optic sensing cables that can be implanted into boreholes as "nerves of the Earth" to collect data on soil temperature, water content, pore water pressure, and strain. The Xinpu landslide in the middle reach of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area in China was selected as a case study to establish a paradigm for in situ thermo-hydro-poro-mechanical monitoring. These UWFBG-based sensing cables were vertically buried in a 31 m-deep borehole at the foot of the landslide, with a resolution of 1 m except for the pressure sensor. We reported field measurements covering the period 2021 and 2022 and produced the spatiotemporal profiles throughout the borehole. Results show that wet years are more likely to motivate landslide motions than dry years. The annual thermally active layer of the landslide has a critical depth of roughly 9 m and might move downward in warmer years. The dynamic groundwater table is located at depths of 9–15 m, where the peaked strain undergoes a periodical response of leap and withdrawal to annual hydrometeorological cycles. These interface behaviors may support the interpretation of the contribution of reservoir regulation to slope stability, allowing us to correlate them to local damage events and potential global destabilization. This paper also offers a natural framework for interpreting thermo-hydro-poro-mechanical signatures from creeping reservoir bank slopes, which may form the basis for a landslide monitoring and early warning system.

Abstract:The implementation of isolated heterologous monitoring systems for spatially distant borehole deployments often comes with substantial equipment costs, which can limit the effectiveness of geohazard mitigation and georisk management efforts. To address this, we have developed a novel monitoring system that integrates fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and microelectromechanical system (MEMS) techniques to capture soil moisture, temperature, sliding resistance, strain, surface tilt, and deep-seated inclination. This system enables real-time, simultaneous data acquisition and cross-validation analyses, offering a cost-effective solution for monitoring critical parameters in geohazard-prone areas. We successfully applied this integrated monitoring system to the Xinpu landslide, an active super-large landslide located in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) of China. The resulting strain profile confirmed the presence of two shallow secondary sliding surfaces at depths of approximately 7 m and 12 m, respectively, in addition to the deep-seated sliding surface at a depth of ∼28 m. The lower secondary sliding surface was activated by extreme precipitation, while the upper one was primarily driven by significant changes in reservoir water levels and secondarily triggered by concentrated rainfalls. Anti-slide piles have remarkably reinforced the upper moving masses but failed to control the lower ones. The gap between the pile heads and the soil amplified the rainwater erosion effect, creating a preferential channel for rainwater infiltration. Multi-physical measurements revealed a mixture of seepage-driven and buoyancy-driven behaviors within the landslide. This study offers an integrated dual-source multi-physical monitoring paradigm that enables collaborative management of multiple crucial boreholes on a large-scale landslide, and contributes to the evaluation and improvement of engineering measures in similar geological settings.

Abstract:Landslide hazards triggered by atmospheric precipitation and periodic water level fluctuations frequently occur in reservoir areas all over the world, resulting in severe fatalities and loss of properties. For the purpose of detecting geological disasters ahead of time, a series of advance monitoring techniques have been developed and applied to engineering practices. Among them, the Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technologies have shown their great potential for monitoring the tempo-spatial distribution of multi-fields (displacement, stress, temperature, seepage, etc.) of reservoir landslides. In this paper, the working principles, characteristics and applicability and these technologies are briefly introduced. In particularly, several representative DFOS-based monitoring instruments and equipment are elaborated, which have been successfully used in several landslides in Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area in China for long-term in situ observation and comprehensive evaluation of relevant geohazards. The monitoring results of Majiagou landslide show that the sliding surfaces, deformation pattern, and groundwater evolution can be sensitively captured based on the DFOS measurements. Seasonal rainfall and water level fluctuations are found to be the two main triggering factors of the landslide. Meanwhile, long time-series monitoring data shed a bright light on real-time deformation prediction and stability analyses of reservoir landslides. Finally, the challenges and future trends of applying the DFOS systems to landslide monitoring are summarized.

Abstract:Accurate and real-time measurement of the evolution of landslides has become a great concern in recent years. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG), as a popular quasi-distributed fiber optic sensing technology, has been successfully applied to geotechnical and geohazard monitoring. In this paper, an FBG-based real-time monitoring system has been developed to capture the multi-physics evolution of creeping landslides. The system was employed to monitor the performance of the Majiagou and Xinpu landslides in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area of China, respectively. The results show that the FBG monitoring system can accurately obtain the variations of ground temperature, soil moisture, and deep displacements, which provides valuable information for evaluating the landslide deformation and failure mechanisms during the operation of the reservoir. In this way, real-time stability analysis and early warning can be achieved.

Abstract:Deformation monitoring of sliding zones or surfaces is of great significance to investigate evolution stages and triggering factors of landslides. The fiber–optic strain sensing cables, similar to human nerves, are capable of capturing slight movements in a distributed sensing and nearly real–time manner. However, the interaction between fiber–optic strain sensing nerves and surrounding geomaterials under shearing remains unclear. In this study, a novel analytical methodology for interpreting the cable–soil interaction under shear deformation and a reliable solution to calculate the shear displacements of critical interfaces in landslides are presented. The feasibility of the proposed method is proven through laboratory shear tests and later applied to calculate the shear displacements of the Majiagou landslide located in the Three Gorges Reservoir region, China. Finally, the empirical relationships between the measured strains and factors of safety are established. It is proved that the reservoir water level drawdown and rainfall cause accelerated shear deformation of this landslide.
DFOS Technology-Based Landslide Monitoring: The Majiagou Landslide Case Study (China)

Abstract:The newly developed distributed fiber optic sensing technology (DFOS) offers a number of attractive advantages over conventional monitoring methods, such as better integration capability, higher accuracy and long-term stability, which are very suitable for the acquisition of multi-field information in slope. In this paper, the fields in slope are defined and proposed based on the engineering geological characteristics of slope. The fundamental principles of some typical DFOS technologies were introduced, and the details about the DFOS based monitoring system for the acquisition of multi-field information, including stress, temperature, seepage and deformation were described as well. In the end, a field study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the DFOS based system for monitoring the Majiagou landslide near Three Gorges reservoir in China. In order to acquire the deformation, temperature and seepage information deep inside the slope mass, six boreholes were set up at different altitudes to install the DFOS based inclinometers, osmotic pressure gauge, moisture meter and other optical fiber sensors. To understand the characteristics of stress field, the DFOS based stress and earth pressure gauge were installed inside the slide resistant pile. The monitoring system successfully obtained the multi-field information during the landslide evolution process. The locations with abnormal deformation could be accurately identified that corresponds to the potential sliding surfaces.
An Energy Demodulation Based Fiber Optic Sensing System For Landslide Early-Warning

Abstract:To help reduce the impact of geo-hazards, an innovative landslide early-warning technology based on an energy demodulation-based fiber optic sensing (FOS-LW for short) technology, is introduced in this paper. FOS-LW measures the energy change in a sensing fiber at the segment of micro-bending, which can be caused by landslide movements, and automatically raises an alarm as soon as the measured signal intensity in the fiber reaches a pre-set threshold. Based on the sensing of micro-bending losses in the fiber optics, a two-event sensing algorithm has been developed for the landslide early-warning. The feasibility of the FOS-LW technology is verified through laboratory simulation and field tests. The result shows that FOS-LW has some unique features-such as the graded alarm, real-time responses, remote monitoring, low cost and passive optical network-and can be applied in the early-warning of landslides.

Abstract:In order to explore more effective methods of landslide disaster monitoring and controlling, NPR anchor cable and optical fiber grating strain sensor are physically combined to form a slope reinforcement-monitoring integration system, with PVC pipe an intermediary. Physical model test is carried out according to timely warning of landslide disasters of the Newtonian force monitoring system. At the same time, the optical fiber sensing technology has the condition of continuous perception of time and space. The feasibility of monitoring the whole life cycle of slope instability and positioning the potential sliding surface is discussed. Through the analysis of the test results, it is concluded that the fiber grating strain sensor can effectively monitor the deep displacement of the slope. PVC pipe and the soil have deformation coordination, which is able to effectively reinforce the slope body together with the combined anchor cable sensing device, and can continuously sense the potential sliding surface in the whole life cycle of the slope. By comparing the results of Newton force monitoring curve with the fiber grating strain monitoring, the mechanical law of "Newton force sudden drops, immediately catastrophe happens" is further verified. The feasibility of the combined sensing and early warning method of optical fiber sensing technology and Newton force monitoring is verified. This method realizes the further optimization of Newton force monitoring system.

Performance evaluation of underground pipelines subjected to landslide thrust with fiber optic strain sensing nerves

Abstract:High-accuracy deformation monitoring is crucial for investigating landslide–pipeline interaction problems, in which the fiber optic nerve system (FONS) holds enormous potential. This paper presents a theoretical framework for interpreting landslide–pipeline interactions using the FONS and proposes a novel method for calculating characteristic parameters of pipe–soil interfaces based on distributed strain measurements. The feasibility of this method is validated through a full-scale model test, and its application for studying pipeline behaviors is demonstrated in the Xinpu landslide, situated in the Three Gorges Reservoir region, China. The field monitoring results reveal that short-duration, high-intensity rainfall events triggered immediate acceleration of landslide movements, leading to pipeline elongation and flexure. Strain measurements of the underground pipeline allow for the identification of the local slipping interface of the landslide. Furthermore, the relationships between reservoir water level (RWL) fluctuations, rainfall events, landslide deformation, and the structural response of the pipe are analyzed. The findings suggest that the deformation of the landslide in the leading and middle parts exhibits high correlations with the combined effect of rainfall and RWL drawdown.

Abstract:The advances in distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technologies enable automatic, remote and long-distance slope monitoring and early-warning of potential geological disasters. Compared with conventional geotechnical instruments, the fiber optic sensors have a number of advantages such as higher accuracy and repeatability, better durability, and enhanced integration capability. In this paper, the quasi-distributed Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) and fully-distributed Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Analysis (BOTDA) sensing technologies are applied for monitoring of slope stability problems in laboratory model tests. The sensing principles and the implementation methods are introduced, followed by two case studies. The fiber optic sensors were embedded in the model slopes for strain monitoring of a soil mass during seepage and surcharge loading, respectively. The reliability of the DFOS based slope monitoring systems has been verified through the analyses of the strain monitoring results.

Abstract:The slope is a multiphase composite system including solid, liquid and gas phases. Slope stability changes under the actions of stress, temperature and seepage. Slopes will be very prone to landslide if in an unstable state. In this paper, considering the contributions of different fields to the landslide, the distributed acquisition, characterization and stability analysis of multi-field information from slopes was studied systematically using distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technology. A sensing system based on DFOS was designed and developed for multi-field information monitoring, including stress, temperature, seepage and deformation. The corresponding methods for data processing, identification and methods for characterization description are also proposed. On this basis, the evolution of the slope is analyzed. Finally, monitoring results of the DFOS system from the Majiagou landslide are shown as a case study for verification.

Abstract:Distributed fiber optic sensing( DFOS) technology is used to monitor deformation of landslide,overcoming defects of conventional sensors. A brief introduction of several DFOS technologies and their principles is made. The authors emphatically introduce the laying means of optical fiber in the Majiagou landslide of Three Gorges. Based on characteristics of engineering environment,fiber is implanted into the anti-sliding piles and the soil below two gutters which are along the contour line of the slope. Besides,a few boreholes are made which is used for installing inclinometer sensors. The sensing fiber is pasted on the outer wall of inclinometer tube to measure its deformation and a series of FBGs are installed in the hole at the same time. The monitoring results show that: The proposed distributed optical fiber sensing technology can accurately identify the location of the fiber with abnormal deformation.

Abstract:This paper shows the results of the monitoring of the deformations of a tunnel, carried out using a distributed optical fiber strain sensor based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. The artificial tunnel of the national railway crosses the accumulation zone of an active landslide, the Varco d’Izzo earthflow, in the southern Italian Apennines. Severely damaged by the landslide movements, the tunnel was demolished and rebuilt in 1992 as a reinforced concrete box flanked by two deep sheet pile walls. In order to detect the onset of potentially dangerous strains of the tunnel structure and follow their time trend, the internal deformations of the tunnel are also monitored by a distributed fiber-optic strain sensor since 2016. The results of the monitoring activity show that the deformation profiles are characterized by strain peaks in correspondence of the structural joints. Furthermore, the elongation of the fiber strands crossing the joints is consistent with the data derived by other measurement systems. Experiments revealed an increase in the time rate of the fiber deformation in the first and last part of the monitoring period when the inclinometers of the area also recorded an acceleration in the landslide movements.

Abstract:Landslides and debris flows are typical geo-hazards which occur in hilly or mountainous regions. Debris flows may result from landslides. Geotechnical instrumentation plays an important role in monitoring and warning of landslides and resulted debris flows. Traditional technologies for monitoring landslides and debris flows have certain limitations. The new optical fiber sensors presented in this paper can overcome those limitations. This paper presents two new optical fiber sensor systems: one is the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)-based in-place inclinometer for monitoring landslides and the other is the FBG-based column-net system for monitoring debris flows. This paper presents the calibration results of FBG-based in-place inclinometers in laboratory. It is found that the calibration results are in good agreement with theoretical results. Both the FBG-based in-place inclinometers and the FBG-based column-net system have been installed at a site in Weijiagou valley, Beichuan County, Sichuan Province of China. Some preliminary results have been obtained and reported in the paper. The advantages of the FBG monitoring systems and their potential applications are also presented.

Abstract:Monitoring shear deformation of sliding zones is of great significance for understanding the landslide evolution mechanism, in which fiber optic strain sensing has shown great potential. However, the correlation between strain measurements of quasi-distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing arrays and shear displacements of surrounding soil remains elusive. In this study, a direct shear model test was conducted to simulate the shear deformation of sliding zones, in which the soil internal deformation was captured using FBG strain sensors and the soil surface deformation was measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV). The test results show that there were two main slip surfaces and two secondary ones, developing a spindle-shaped shear band in the soil. The formation of the shear band was successfully captured by FBG sensors. A sinusoidal model was proposed to describe the fiber optic cable deformation behavior. On this basis, the shear displacements and shear band widths were calculated by using strain measurements. This work provides important insight into the deduction of soil shear deformation using soil-embedded FBG strain sensors.
Monitoring of landslides and debris flows using FBG sensing technology

Abstract:Landslide is a typical geological hazard occurring in mountainous regions. Debris flows will be induced by heavy rainfall. But it is too difficult to predict debris flow and landside by traditional numerical methods. Thus instrumentation and warning methods are of great importance. Traditional technologies which based on electric sensing technique have certain limitations. The optical fiber sensors introduced in this paper can overcome those limitations. This paper presents two new optical fiber sensor systems: one is the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based in-place inclinometer for monitoring landslide movements and the other is the FBG based column-net system for monitoring debris flows. This paper presents the calibration results of FBG based in-place inclinometers in laboratory. It is found that the calibration results are in good agreement with theoretical results. Both the FBG based in-place inclinometers and the FBG based column-net system have been installed at a site in Weijiaogao, Beichuan, Sichuan Province of China. Preliminary monitoring results are reported in the paper.
Automatic land subsidence monitoring system based on weak-reflection fiber gratings

Abstract:Fiber optic sensing technique has the features of distributed and high-precision measurement, especially in land subsidence monitoring. Due to the high cost and complicated environment, the monitoring data is mostly collected manually and it limits the real-time acquisition of land subsidence performance under special circumstances. Based on full-section monitoring of land subsidence in boreholes using the distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technique, the automatic land subsidence monitoring system based on weak-reflection fiber gratings is proposed and established in Hengshui, China. The system utilizes the techniques of weak-reflection fiber gratings, time division multiplexing, Internet of Things, database, and 4G network, then realizes automatic monitoring of land subsidence and real-time remote data collection. Through the client system software to realize the data storage, query, and analysis. The monitoring results show that the compressive deformation of the soil occurs at aquitards (Ad2, Ad3, Ad4). For the aquifers which composed of sand soil (100～400 m depth), there is a fluctuating change which influenced by seasonal extraction of the groundwater. Consequently, a slight rebound occurs in winter and then compresses in spring. The feasibility and accuracy of the system have been verified in the field investigation, and the system makes the process of monitoring more automatic, standard, and cost-effective.
