Abstract:Seismogenic faults are commonly composed of a series of segments, revealed by geometric barriers and along‐strike gradients in fault activity. At the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, the Minle‐Damaying Fault (MDF), bounding a portion of the eastern Qilian Shan, illustrates segmented paleoseismic behavior of a major seismogenic reverse fault. Field surveys, trench excavations, and drone‐surveyed topography along the MDF reveal scarps with diverse cumulative displacements. Multiple events, with timing constrained by radiocarbon dating, are identified by both trench exposures and analysis of deformed landforms. Both individual coseismic displacements and slip rates taper toward the ends, revealing repeated rupture of the western MDF segment. Not all events present at the center of this segment appear at sites closer to the fault tips, suggesting that some earthquakes did not everywhere rupture to the surface. Isolated rupture of the western segment would produce a Mw7.0 earthquake. However, we cannot rule out correlation of some paleo‐earthquakes between two segments, corresponding to larger events. A cluster of two 7‐m slip events occurred on the eastern segment in the past 1,000 years, one of which may correspond to a multisegment event.
Oblique Thrusting and Strain Partitioning in the Longmen Shan Fold‐and‐Thrust Belt, Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Eastern Tibet is an important example of oblique convergence and associated strain partitioning, as suggested by recent 2‐D and 3‐D structural interpretations, yet the nature and evolution of oblique strain partitioning of this region remain poorly known. Here we use seismic reflection profiles, borehole data, and field investigations in the Longmen Shan piedmont to determine the subsurface structural architecture, and we observe several nearly N‐S striking thrusts and reactivation of NE striking preexisting faults. We interpret that this behavior is due to a regional principal compressional stress oriented in the E‐W direction, oblique to the NE striking Longmen Shan. Using the records of fault activity and related Late Pliocene and Quaternary foreland sediments and growth strata, as well as the coseismic rupture of the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, we demonstrate that the Longmen Shan has experienced E‐W crustal shortening and oblique motion since ~5–2 Ma. We present two strain partitioning models arising from oblique thrusting in eastern Tibet and suggest that the eastward extrusion from Tibet is mainly accommodated on the strike‐slip Longriba fault and the dip‐slip Longmen Shan‐Min Shan fault zones. These results enhance our understanding of the tectonic relationship between the Songpan‐Ganzi terrane and the Sichuan basin and provide additional constraints for studies of the geodynamic response of eastern Tibet to the ongoing India‐Eurasia collision.
Young, Active Conjugate Strike–slip Deformation in West Sichuan: Evidence for the Stress–strain Pattern of the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The active kinematics of the eastern Tibetan Plateau are characterized by the southeastward movement of a major tectonic unit, the Chuan-Dian crustal fragment, bounded by the left-lateral Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault in the northeast and the right-lateral Red River-Ailao Shan shear zone in the southwest. Our field structural and geomorphic observations define two sets of young, active strike-slip faults within the northern part of the fragment that lie within the SE Tibetan Plateau. One set trends NE-SW with right-lateral displacement and includes the Jiulong, Batang, and Derong faults. The second set trends NW-SE with left-lateral displacement and includes the Xianshuihe, Litang, Xiangcheng, Zhongdian, and Xuebo faults. Strike-slip displacements along these faults were established by the deflection and offset of streams and various lithologic units; these offsets yield an average magnitude of right-and left-lateral displacements of similar to 15-35 km. Using 5.7-3.5 Ma as the time of onset of the late-stage evolution of the Xianshuihe fault and the regional stream incision within this part of the plateau as a proxy for the initiation age of conjugate strike-slip faulting, we have determined an average slip rate of similar to 2.6-9.4 mm/year. These two sets of strike-slip faults intersect at an obtuse angle that ranges from 100 degrees to 140 degrees facing east and west; the fault sets define a conjugate strike-slip pattern that expresses internal E-W shortening in the northern part of the Chuan-Dian crustal fragment. These conjugate faults are interpreted to have experienced clockwise and counterclockwise rotations of up to 20 degrees. The presence of this conjugate fault system demonstrates that this part of the Tibetan Plateau is undergoing not only southward movement, but also E-W shortening and N-S lengthening due to convergence between the Sichuan Basin and the eastern Himalayan syntaxis.
Variable Thrust Rates of the Eastern Qilianshan Mountain Front, Northeastern Margin of the Tibet Plateau and Its Implication to the Topography of the Yongchangnan Shan

Abstract:It is commonly assumed a thrust has a constant slip and uplifting rate along strike, however, this simplified model cannot always be consistent with field observations. The along strike slip patterns with variable offsets and rates contain plenty of information about the characteristics of the faulting behavior and its relationship with adjacent faults. The east Qilian Shan, located at the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, provides us an excellent opportunity to study the faulting behavior in a thrust-bounded range area. Besides the previously reported slip rates of the N-W trending tectonics across the region, we augmented the data by surveying the Fengle fault (FF), one of the north bounding thrusts of the Yongchangnan Shan. Another north bounding fault is the Kangningqiao Fault (KNF), east of the FF. Based on the vertical offsets and rates along the fault, we constructed the slip pattern along strike. The results show the vertical slip rate of the FF ranges from 0.7 +/- 0.1 mm/a to 2.8 +/- 1.3 mm/a across three surveyed sites. The slip rate decreases from the east to the west. The FF and KNF might be inferred as two segments of a single segmented thrust controlling the uplift of the Yongchangnan Shan. By comparing the uplift onsets in the study region, we discuss the northeastward propagated deformation along the northeastern margin of the Tibet plateau.
Effects of Fault Slip Distribution on the Geometry and Kinematics of the Southern Junggar Fold-and-thrust Belt, Northern Tian Shan

Abstract:At the foreland edge of fold-and-thrust belts (FTBs), tectonic shortening could either be accommodated by thick-skinned faulting and/or structural wedges developed near range-fronts, or be transferred along detachment layers further into basins, forming thin-skinned structures. Although the geometry and kinematics of each structure have been well-investigated, studies that characterize slip distribution along a specific fault as well as the effects of variations in magnitude of fault displacement on the development of fault-related folds are still lacking. In this study, we present a case study of the southern Junggar Thrust (SJT), a seismically-active fault developed in the southern Junggar FTB, northern Tian Shan with an overall vergence to the north. The results of structural interpretations of seismic reflection profiles combined with the age constraints provided by previous magnetostratigraphic studies demonstrate that: 1) The kinematics of the SJT vary along strike from purely structural wedging to classical fault-bend folding. Besides these end-member models, intermediate cases exist between them, in which fault slip is partitioned by two-stage structural deformation, i.e., fault-bend folding subsequent to structural wedging at the range front. As a result, part of the displacement is transferred northward, forming the Tugulu anticline. 2) Along-strike variations in displacement along the Tugulu fault (frontal fault of the SJT) also affect the geometry and kinematics of the Tugulu anticline, varying from detachment folding, trishear fault-propagation folding with a pure-shear fault-bend folding back-limb, and classical trishear fault-propagation folding to fault-bend folding with increasing displacement. 3) The SJT has an average Quaternary slip rate of 3.9 +/- 0.4 mm/yr, serving as a principal structure accommodating tectonic shortening in the southern Junggar FTB. The results of this study are helpful for seismic hazard assessments of the study area, which may also shed light on structural evolution of fault-related folds in other FTBs.

Abstract:Interpretation of geophysical data and analysis of fault systems confirm that structures in the northern margin of Qaidam basin were formed after the Pliocene and occur as a series of right-lateral strike-slip thrusts.The faults within the strike-slip thrust belts occur as structure in sectional view,thus direct correlation of strata between the hanging wall and footwall is impossible. The formation of the right-lateral oblique thrust belts were controlled by the N-S oblique thrusting of South Qilian Orogeny and the main terrestrial stress came from the S-N intracontinental subduction of the north margin of Qaidam massive.To interpret the right-lateral strike-slip thrusting,a kinematics model is also provided.
Partitioning of Oblique Convergence Coupled to the Fault Locking Behavior of Fold‐and‐thrust Belts: Evidence from the Qilian Shan, Northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Oblique plate convergence is common, but it is not clear how the obliquity is achieved by continental fold‐and‐thrust belts. We address this problem in the Qilian Shan, northeastern Tibetan Plateau, using fieldwork observations, geomorphic analysis, and elastic dislocation modeling of published geodetic data. A thrust dips SSW from the northern range front and underlies steeper thrusts in the interior. Cenozoic thrust‐related shortening across the Qilian Shan is ~155–175 km, based on two transects. Elastic dislocation modeling indicates that horizontal strain in the interseismic period is consistent with oblique slip on a single low‐angle detachment thrust below ~26 km depth, dipping SSW at ~17°. We suggest that this detachment is located above North China Block crust, originally underthrust during Paleozoic orogeny. Horizontal shear strain is localized directly above the updip limit of creep on the detachment and is coincident with the left‐lateral Haiyuan Fault. This configuration implies that oblique slip on the detachment below seismogenic depths is partitioned in the shallow crust onto separate strike‐slip and thrust faults. This is consistent with strain partitioning in oceanic subduction zones but has not previously been found by dislocation models of continental interiors. The marginal, strike‐slip, Altyn Tagh Fault influences thrusting within the Qilian Shan for 100–200 km from the fault but does not control the regional structure, where Paleozoic basement faults have been reactivated. The Qilian Shan resembles the main Tibetan Plateau in nascent form: active thrusts are marginal to an interior that is developing plateau characteristics, involving low relief, and low seismicity.
Dextral Strike-Slip of Sanguankou-Niushoushan Fault Zone and Extension of Arc Tectonic Belt in the Northeastern Margin of the Tibet Plateau

Abstract:The kinematic characteristics of the Sanguankou-Niushoushan fault (SGK-NSSF) are of great significance to the understanding of the extension of the arc tectonic belt in the northeastern margin of the Tibet Plateau. Using field surveys and various data collection methods, including large-scale geological mapping, measurement of typical topographies, and dating of sedimentary strata, it was determined that the SGK-NSSF exhibits obvious dextral strike-slip characteristics and thus is not a sinistral strike-slip fault, as believed by previous researchers. The results of this study show that the geological boundaries for the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras were all dextrally dislocated by the fault, with the faulted displacements being similar. The maximum strike-slip displacement of the fault, after elimination of topographic effects, was found to be 961±6 m. The Sanguankou fault at the northern section exhibits obvious characteristics of more recent activities, with a series of small gullies having undergone synchronized dextral writhing after traversing the fault. The average horizontal slip rate of the fault since the late Quaternary was determined to be approximately 0.35 mm/a. The pre-existing fold structures formed during the late Pliocene were dislocated by the fault and became ex situ, indicating that dextral strike-slip of the fault could not have occurred prior to the late Pliocene. The maximum displacements and average slip rates were used to estimate the onset time of the dextral strike-slip activities of the fault as being after 2.7 Ma. In this study, the understanding of previous researchers concerning the extension in the northeastern margin of the Tibet Plateau was combined with analyses of the successive relationships between fold deformations and fault activities. This led to the finding that the extension in the northeastern margin of the Tibet Plateau reached the vicinity of the SGK-NSSF during the late Pliocene (∼2.7 Ma), causing regional uplift and fold deformations of the strata there. During the early Quaternary, the northeastern compression of the Tibet Plateau and the counterclockwise rotation of the Ordos block collectively resulted in the dextral strike-slip activities of the SGK-NSSF. This then formed the foremost margin of the arc tectonic belt extension in the northeastern margin of the Tibet Plateau.
V-Shaped Conjugate Strike-Slip Faults: Characteristics, Formation Mechanisms and Implications for the Late Cenozoic Deformation in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The V-shaped conjugate strike-slip fault system is defined as strike-slip faults with obtuse conjugate angles, whose opening side has an acute angle between the V-shaped faults, pointing to the direction of maximum extension. Previous studies on V-shaped conjugate strike-slip faults mostly focused on their development background and associated dynamic mechanisms.However, few literatures exist to comprehensively review the geometry and kinematics of V-shaped conjugate strike-slip faults.Here, we firstly summarize previous findings on the geometry, kinematic characteristics and formation mechanisms of existing Vshaped conjugate strike-slip faults, and then select the V-shaped conjugate strike-slip faults in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau for a case analysis. The characteristics of V-shaped conjugate strike-slip faults in the western United States, central and western Eurasian plate and central Tibet show a negative relation among conjugate angles and corresponding fault slip rates and fault lengths. The four formation mechanisms of the V-shaped conjugate strike-slip faults are 1) the fault planes experienced rotation after their formation, 2) the faults were reactivated along preexisting structurally weak zones, 3) the faults followed the paired general shear model and 4) the fault evolved according to the maximum-effective-moment criterion. Integrating analyses of geophysical data, elevation difference and geometric characteristics, we infer that the development of V-shaped conjugate strikeslip faults（Batang-Litang and Derong-Xiangcheng faults） in the Chuan-Dian block in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, is consistent with gravitational spreading of the Tibetan lithosphere under the paired general shear model. This provides important insights for understanding the continuum crustal deformation in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau.
Asymmetrical Microfracture Density Across an Active Thrust Fault: Evidence from the Longmen Shan Fault, Eastern Tibet

Abstract:Microfracture density in fault damage zones can reflect spatial variability that decays in intensity as a function of distance from the fault, which is crucial in understanding the mechanical, seismological, and fluid-flow properties of the fault system. However, few studies explored the characteristics of fracture density between the two sides of active dip-slip faults due to rare field observations. Here, we measured and modeled microfractures across an active thrust fault associated with the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake in the Longmen Shan, eastern Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that the microfracture density at the Qingping site developed more intensely in the hanging wall than in the footwall for an exposed thrust fault, indicating an asymmetrical pattern. The hidden thrust fault at the Jushui site showed that microfractures developed more intensely in vertical planes in the hanging wall than in the footwall, whereas microfractures developed similarly in horizontal planes within the two sides, indicating a quasiasymmetrical pattern. Comparing the data at the two sites with computational modeling, we suggest that fault geometry might exert a first-order control of the asymmetrical microfracture density pattern, which is helpful for revealing different deformational behaviors of rock masses in the fault damage zones and better understanding the hanging-wall effect for evaluating seismic hazards on active thrust faults.

Growth of Lithosphere-Scale Fault System in NE Tibet: Numerical Modeling Constrained by High-Resolution Seismic Reflection Data

Abstract:The east Kunlun fault is an important strike-slip shear zone to understand continental deformation in NE Tibet. The recent high-resolution deep seismic reflection profiling across the Kunlun fault reveals a thrust fault system and two decollements in the crust, along with another thrust fault system which reaches to the depth of upper mantle and cuts off the Moho. The mechanism of the growth of these shear zones at lithosphere-scale, which reveals the type of deep deformation, is investigated using the finite-element method with an elastic-plastic constitutive relationship. The results show that the thrust fault system in the crust may be explained by the conjugated plastic deformation belts under compression from the Indian plate. The pre-existing fault in the depth may develop to cut the Moho toward two new directions rather than along the original direction. The vertical and lateral heterogeneity of material, frictional property and geometry of the models all affect the feature of the fault growth. The growth of the thrust fault system on both sides of the Kunlun fault is only located in the crust, it means that the Kunlun fault does not reach to the Moho depth.
Geometric and Kinematic Evolution of the Jiali Fault, Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis

Abstract:Large strike-slip faults play an important role in slip partitioning of the oblique convergence between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. The Karakorum-Jiali fault zone (KJFZ) is regarded as the southernmost major fault in the strike-slip faults system of the Tibetan plateau. The significance of the Jiali fault as the southern boundary of the eastward extrusion of the Tibetan plateau remains subject to debate due to the wide disagreements in its strike-slip rate. There is also a huge mismatch between its previously predicted low slip rate and the accom-modation of the most significant compression in the frontal Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis. New GPS measurements suggest that the dextral strike-slip rate of the western segment, the middle segment, and the western part of the eastern segment of the Jiali fault is 5.0 ? 0.5 mm/yr, 2.4 ? 0.8 mm/yr, and 3.8 ? 0.9 mm/yr, respectively. As for the eastern segment of the Jiali fault, based on a two-dimensional elastic dislocation model, we search for the optimal solutions of the strike-slip rates along its two branch faults. They no longer accommodate strike-slip motion. But the diffuse active fault zone between the Mishimi and Puqu fault, inferred by the distribution of small earthquakes and systematic geologic mapping, may accommodate the strike slip motion with an estimated rate less than 5 mm/yr. Thus, it is predicted to have taken place the eastern segment. The eastern segment of the Jiali fault appears to have horizontally rotated clockwise around the Namche-Barwa Syntaxis.
Channel Profiles Reveal Fault Activity along the Longmen Shan, Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Assessing fault activity in regions lacking Quaternary sedimentary constraints remains a global challenge. In this study, we used channel slope distribution to examine variations in rock uplift along faults. By comparing channel steepness with published low-temperature thermochronology and paleo-seismic data, we identified deformation changes both perpendicular to and along the Longmen Shan at various time scales. Our data revealed distinct fault segments displaying distinct thrust activities along the Longmen Shan's strike. In the southern segment, the Dachuan fault exhibited the highest activity, and its movement had persisted for millions of years. In the central segment, the Wenchuan fault was active during theearly Quaternary but has become dormant since the late Pleistocene. Within the past millions of years, the Yingxiu and Pengguan faults displayed significant vertical displacement. Fault activity in the northern Longmen Shan was relatively weak, with the Qingchuan fault transitioning from thrust movement during the Neogene to pure strike-slip activity since the Pleistocene. Overall, the Dachuan and Huya faults exhibited deformation patterns similar to the Yingxiu fault during the Quaternary. Similar to the Yingxiu fault, which triggered the Wenchuan earthquake, the Dachuan and Huya faults possess the capacity to produce significant earthquakes in the future. The variations in deformation perpendicular to and along the Longmen Shan fault system underscore the importance of upper crustal shortening in shaping the rock uplift patterns and topography of the eastern Tibetan Plateau margin.

A lithospheric-scale thrust-wedge model for the formation of the northern Tibetan plateau margin: Evidence from high-resolution seismic imaging

Abstract:The Tibetan plateau is one of the best field laboratories to investigate mechanisms of continental-lithosphere deformation, which contrasts sharply with the typical rigid-plate behavior of the oceanic lithosphere. Several end-member processes have been proposed for the plateau formation involving vertically coherent pure-shear shortening, decoupled upper- and lower-crustal shortening, oblique continental subduction, and crustal channelized flow. In order to test the above models, we conducted an integrated broadband and dense-nodal seismic-array investigation along two traverses across the northern Tibetan plateau margin in the Qilian Shan and its foreland region. The integrated observation provides the first coherent structural image of the lithosphere in general and shallow crust correlative to surface geology in particular in northern Tibet with an updated resolution. Our seismic imaging shows that the surface-exposed south-dipping Qilian Shan frontal thrust zone is closely associated with a low-velocity zone with concentrated seismicity in the upper crust, and along an inclined convertor can be extended downward into the middle-lower crust near a >10-km Moho offset beneath the Haiyuan Fault zone. This dipping feature and an inferred lithospheric detachment zone with oriented anisotropic fabrics constitute a lithospheric-scale thrust zone that bounds crustal-scale thick-skinned thrusts above, coupled with the development of distributed thrust shear zones that cut across the lowermost crust and uppermost mantle. We interpret the bounding lithospheric-scale thrust zone as the basal thrust of a thrust-wedge system across the northern Tibetan plateau margin. A minimum ∼26% bulk shortening strain is accommodated in the thrust-wedge system, which is compatible with the surface-geology constraints. Together with magnetotelluric data, our seismic imaging reveals stark contrasts in the crustal structure and rheology across the left-slip Haiyuan Fault. The involvement of strain partitioning across this regional structure in the thrust wedge supports the earlier proposed transpressional continental underthrusting of North China beneath the Tibetan plateau.

Fault Interaction and Strain Partitioning Deduced From Deformed Fluvial Terraces of the Eastern North Qilian Foreland, NE Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Abstract Faulting and folding of basement rocks together accommodate convergence within continental orogens, forming complex zones of intraplate deformation shaped by the fault interaction. Here we use the river terraces along the Dongda river to examine the tectonic deformation patterns of the hinterland and the foreland of the eastern North Qilian Shan, a zone of crustal shortening located at the northeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Five Late Pleistocene–Holocene terraces of Dongda river are displaced by three major reverse faults: Minle‐Damaying fault, Huangcheng‐Ta'erzhuang fault, and Fengle fault, from south to north. Based on displaced terrace treads, we estimated vertical slip rates along the Minle‐Damaying fault as 0.7–0.8 mm/a, and along the Fengle fault as 0.5–0.7 mm/a. Deformed terraces suggest an additional uplift of ∼0.2 mm/a through the folding of the Dahuang Shan anticline. Inhomogeneous uplift of the intermontane basins between the Minle‐Damaying fault and the Dahuang Shan anticline indicates a 0.9 ± 0.2 mm/a uplift rate along the Huangcheng‐Ta'erzhuang fault. Kinematic modeling of this thrust system shows that deformation propagated northward toward the foreland along a south‐dipping 10° décollement rooted into the Haiyuan fault at the depth of ∼20 km. This system accommodates 2.7–3.4 mm/a total crustal shortening rate. We suggest this broad thrust belt and the relatively high rate of shortening within this part of the eastern Qilian Shan is a result of the oblique convergence along a restraining bend of Haiyuan fault system. The elevated shortening rate within this area indicates high potential seismic hazard.

Abstract:SE Tibet experienced significant deformation during the Late Cenozoic, characterized by clockwise rotation of blocks separated by left-lateral strike-slip faults. Through field surveys, structural analyses and microstructural observations, we identified an early phase of ductile shear zones along three major faults: the Anninghe, Jinhe-Jinghe and Jinpingshan faults. New geochronological and thermochronological data collected from these fault zones and from carbonatites associated with a tear fault between two right-lateral oblique faults provide evidence that this slip occurred before c. 30 Ma. These findings lead to a new conceptual model suggesting that these north-south-trending right-lateral oblique-slip faults, together with the NW-trending left-lateral strike-slip faults in SE Tibet, form a network of large conjugate fractures. The conjugate fracture system, as a result of north- to NE-trending contraction, had a crucial role in controlling the overall tectonic framework of SE Tibet during the Oligocene. By integrating previous research and combining this with our latest findings, we propose a two-phases evolution model of Cenozoic tectonics in the region of SE Tibet, in which a drastic change in kinematics took place from an early phase (before similar to 30 Ma) oblique dextral shearing to a late phase sinistral strike-slip faulting since the Miocene.
Lithospheric deformation revealed by teleseismic phases SKS PKS and SKKS splitting in the NE margin of the Tibetan plateau

Abstract:The NE margin of the Tibetan plateau influenced by multiple blocks, the regional dynamic model and lithospheric deformation characteristics are still controversial. In this study, 15 years data from permanent broadband seismic stations of the seismic network in the study area were adopted for splitting analyses of teleseismic phases XKS (SKS PKS and SKKS, shortly named XKS) using a grid search method, longer observations provided each station with a large number of clear seismic phases. The results show that the fast wave directions of XKS splitting are oriented toward WNW or NW, with reference to the direction of absolute plate motion, the lithospheric deformation is dominantly driven by the asthenosphere, although there are local variations. On both sides of the Haiyuan fault zone, there is a noticeable variation in lithospheric azimuthal anisotropy, further enhances the possibility that it is an extended boundary of the Tibetan plateau. Rheological anisotropic features on the western side of the Ordos block emphasize the obstruction of the rigid Ordos lithosphere. The crust and mantle seem to be coupled below the Qinling orogen, possibly related to the lateral movement of lithospheric material. However, in the Hexi corridor, there may be layered anisotropy within the lithosphere, which is inferred to relate to the subductions of the Alxa block and the Qilian orogen. The thicker lithosphere on the southern margin of the Alxa block may influence the asthenospheric flow. In addition, anisotropy results at the southeastern edge of the Alxa block and the Yinchuan graben reflect the possibility that the lithosphere may be characterized by a combination of horizontal and vertical movements. These results have greatly improved our understanding of the dynamic models and lithospheric deformation characteristics of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan plateau and adjacent areas.

Abstract:Fault segmentation plays a critical role in assessing seismic hazards, particularly in tectonically complex regions. The Laji-Jishi Shan Fault Zone (LJSFZ), located on the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, is a key structure that accommodates regional tectonic stress. This study integrates geomorphic indices, cross-fault deformation rate profiles, and 3D crustal electrical structure data to analyze the varying levels of tectonic activity across different segments of the LJSFZ. We extracted 160 drainage basins along the strike of the LJSFZ from a 30 m resolution digital elevation model and calculated geomorphic indices, including the hypsometric integral (HI), stream length-gradient index (SL), and channel steepness index (ksn), to assess the variations in tectonic activity intensity along the strike of the LJSFZ. The basins were categorized based on river flow directions to capture potential differences across the fault zone. Our results show that the eastern basins of the LJSFZ exhibit the strongest tectonic activity, demonstrated by significantly higher SL and ksn values compared to other regions. A detailed segmentation analysis along the northern Laji Shan Fault and eastern Jishi Shan Fault identified distinct fault segments characterized by variations in SL and ksn indices. Segments with high SL values (>500) correspond to higher crustal uplift rates (~3 mm/year), while segments with lower SL values exhibit lower uplift rates (~2 mm/year), as confirmed by cross-fault deformation profiles derived from GNSS and InSAR data. This correlation demonstrates that geomorphic indices effectively reflect fault activity intensity. Additionally, 3D crustal electrical structure data further indicate that highly conductive mid- to lower-crustal materials originating from the interior of the Tibetan Plateau are obstructed at segment L3 of the LJSFZ. This obstruction leads to localized intense uplift and enhanced fault activity. These findings suggest that while the regional stress–strain pattern of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau is the primary driver of the segmented activity along the Laji-Jishi Shan belt, the direction of localized crustal flow is a critical factor influencing fault activity segmentation.

Late Pleistocene Left-Lateral Slip Rates of the Gulang Fault and Its Tectonic Implications in Eastern Qilian Shan (NE Tibetan Plateau), China

Abstract:The late Pleistocene deformation pattern in the eastern Qilian Shan remains controversial. Study of the geometry and slip rate of the fault holds crucial value for better understanding the regional deformation pattern. The active E-W trending Gulang and Tianjing Shan Fault Zone is located in the southern boundary of the Tengger Desert which plays a significant role in tectonic deformation and slip transfer in the NE Tibetan Plateau. Geomorphic mapping of the active fault traces reveal that the Gulang fault is composed of two segments, separated by the Guanjia Tai pull-apart basin. Offset geomorphic features indicate that the Gulang fault appears to be primarily sinistral strike-slip with no reverse component. Based on offset gullies/terraces and optically stimulated luminescence dating of offset-related sediments, we obtain a consistent late Pleistocene slip rate of similar to 2.5 mm/a along the western and eastern segments of the Gulang Fault. Meanwhile, the slip vectors indicate the Gulang fault redistributes strain and transforms displacement along the Haiyuan fault, accommodating the westward motion of the Gobi-Alashan block. Moreover, a devastating earthquake of Ms 8.0 struck Gulang on 23rd May 1927. Geomorphically fresh fault scarps and surface rupture zone are observed at Gulang Fault, we modify the Modified Mercalli Intensities (MMI) and revise the isoseismal map for the Gulang earthquake. Combining with the high-resolution deep seismic-reflection data, the Gulang fault may be the source of the earthquake. Regionally, GPS velocities indicate that faulting, crustal shortening, and basin/block rotation accommodate deformation of the plateau's northern margin. In conclusion, the fault geometry, kinematics, and regional GPS velocities reflect that this region experiences eastward movement of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau relative to the Gobi-Alashan.
Cenozoic tectonic transition within the western segment of the Longmenshan fault, southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau: Insights from geological and geophysical data

Abstract:Thrust fault zones around the Tibetan Plateau (TP) record the tectonic evolution between the Plateau and its surrounding terranes, which is helpful for understanding the uplift mechanism and deformational processes of the TP. The Longmenshan fault (LMSF) is the tectonic boundary (TB) between the Yangtze terrane (YT) and Songpan-Garze terrane (SGT), while the TB of its western segment, either the Lijiang-Xiaojinhe fault (LXF) or Jinhe-Qinghe fault (JQF), is controversial. Therefore, we conducted magnetotelluric (MT) imaging, surface structure surveys, and petrologic analysis to further determine the deep–shallow structural relationship of the western LMSF segment. Resistors R1 and R2 revealed by MT imaging may have originated from different magmatism. Among them, R2 may have originated from plume underplating, which is consistent with previous studies, while R1 may have originated from the residue of episodic mafic magma intrusion along the JQF over a broader period. Based on regional geophysics, surface structural patterns and petrologic mineralogy, it is suggested that the JQF may have deformed deep into the lower crust or upper mantle, accommodating the southeast expansion of the TP by thrusting and acting as the TB between the YT and SGT before ∼15 Ma. After ∼15 Ma, due to the activation of the large-scale strike-slip faults, the LXF gradually replaced the JQF to dominate the structural deformation of the western LMSF segment. Our results indicate that the above tectonic transition might be associated with the geodynamic process from centralized deformation to diffuse deformation within the southeast TP during the late Cenozoic.
