Effects of Intelligent Feeding Method on the Growth, Immunity and Stress of Juvenile Micropterus Salmoides

Abstract:The feeding method is of great significance for aquaculture production and cost. In recent years, research on intelligent feeding, a method based on fish appetite, has been trending. Few studies, however, have focused on fish welfare issues that can result from intelligent feeding. In this study, an adaptive feeder based on a practical intelligent feeding method was designed to evaluate whether this intelligent feeding method would impair fish welfare compared to traditional automatic feeding. The results indicated that the amount of residual feed and size inhomogeneity in the traditional group was significantly higher than that in the intelligent group. The results of the growth indicator showed that the weight gain rate (WGR) in the intelligent feeding group was significantly higher (30.17%) than in the traditional feeding group. Although no significant differences were observed in the survival rate (SR), the condition factor (CF) and the hepatosomatic index (HSI), the specific growth rate (SGR) in the intelligent feeding group was significantly increased by 8.33% while the feed conversion rate (FCR) was reduced by a remarkable 17.07% compared to the traditional feeding group. Moreover, intelligent feeding significantly improved the pepsin activity of the bass. In terms of immunity and antioxidant capacity, however, the fish in the intelligent feeding group had a significantly lower lysozyme (LZM) level than those fed with the traditional method. For superoxide dismutase (SOD), the intelligent group also displayed a lower activity value, although it was not significant. The intelligent feeding group had 0.14 nmol/mg protein higher malondialdehyde (MDA) activity than the traditional group. Regarding stress, although no statistical significance was observed, the cortisol level in the intelligent group was 1.9 ng/ml higher than in the traditional group. Together, these data suggested that the intelligent feeding method can significantly improve fish growth but may also result in stress and suppress innate immunity.

Abstract:Aquaculture contributes significantly to world food supplies and the rapid growth of this sector has brought forth the need to ensure that development is based on environmentally responsible practices, including those concerning feeds. The major players in the aquafeed industry are greatly aware of this and they attach importance to sustainability issues during feed development. There is consensus among the feed manufacturers and the farmers that quality feeds should not only ensure superior growth, but also return prime health. Therefore, the potential health promoting quality of each component is to be taken into account while formulating feeds.The role of dietary nutrients or additives on the functions of the immune system in fish has been investigated since the 1980s. Not all nutrients have received attention; most of the studies have been directed towards vitamins C, E and fatty acids (oils). Popular additives comprise yeast-derived products such as glucans and mannan oligosaccharides, besides probiotics. Several of these components have been examined for their ability to protect fish from stressors or diseases. The physiological outcomes attributed to these nutrients or additives are presumed to be translated to good health. More convincing evidences should be gathered before they are classified as ‘functional ingredients’. Aquafeeds of the future are expected to impart dual benefits of good growth and health to the farmed organism, and preventive health care through nutritional means is certainly a strategy to ensure sustainability in aquaculture.

Abstract:Abstract Growing concerns about antibiotic resistance coupled with recent legislation limiting in-feed antibiotic use in livestock feed has led to a resurgence of interest in plant-based extracts, prebiotics/probiotics, and other nutraceutical compounds with immune-modulating properties. Consumer preference for functional ingredients in their own food as well as feed for their pets or livestock has created a niche for development of feed additives with bioactive properties with the potential to improve health through their ability to regulate inflammation and modulate microbial communities. For example, dietary omega-3 fatty acids have been documented to reduce inflammation through altering the fatty acid composition of immune cells, shifting immune cell function, and reducing inflammatory lipid mediator and cytokine production. Dietary probiotic supplementation allows an intimate interaction between the gut mucosa and the largest concentrated population of the host’s immune cells, the mucosal immune system. Probiotics have been shown to modulate the inflammatory response through interaction with intestinal epithelial cells, M-cells in Peyer’s patches, innate immune cells such as dendritic and other antigen-presenting cells, and increasing barrier function through increased mucus and antibody production. Other feedstuffs such as green tea components (epigallocatechin-3-gallate, EGCG) interact with neutrophils and macrophages to limit cellular migration and inflammatory molecule production to reduce inflammation. A wealth of information detailing mechanistic outcomes exists in mouse literature and human cell lines, while livestock and companion animal literature is an untapped area for future work. An emphasis on research aimed at a more molecular, mechanistic understanding of currently available feed additives will lead to the improvement of existing additives and development of new additives for use in livestock and companion animal feed.

Abstract:Considering the costs of feed costs (nearly 60% of production cost), nutrition, feeding and feed utilization are among the most important factors in commercial aquaculture. During the last decade, administration of functional feed additives has been practiced for enhancing nutrient digestibility and digestive enzyme activities of cultured fish and shellfish. Traditionally, antibiotics were used for boosting growth performance and nutrient digestibility in commercial aquaculture. However, emergence of resistance pathogens and possible risk to human health resulted in limitation or prohibition of prophylactic administration of antibiotics. Recently, there was increasing attentions towards dietary administration of functional feed additives that include probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics for elevation of digestive enzyme activity and nutrient digestibility. The results of those studies revealed contradictory effects of different pro-, pre- or synbiotics on various fish species. It seems that the effects are species specific and related to modulation of the intestinal microbiota. In view of this issue, the present review provides a comprehensive sight on the effects of different pro-, pre- and synbiotics on digestive enzyme activity and nutrient digestibility in different species with special focus on the mode of action. In addition, the present review highlighted the gaps of existing knowledge as well as suggesting the subjects which needs additional studies.

Abstract:<p>Intensive culture systems are usually employed to increase the production, but we suspect that, in such systems, fish suffer infection and stress, which weakens their health. However, such systems may fail due to lack of resources or difficulty in controlling the rearing conditions' optimization. When intensive culture systems fail, aquatic animals gradually stop feeding. Accordingly, their physiological status deteriorates, and their immunity is suppressed. Through some strategies, it is possible to protect fish from disease by providing balanced food that maintain intestinal health and improve digestion, thereby increasing immunity. Protecting the health of the intestinal barriers is the primary guarantee of fish health. The local immunity of the intestine is associated with the innate and adaptive immunity of the fish's entire body. Thus, it is necessary to understand the interaction between the gut microbiota and the general immune system, as well as the most important reasons that can increase or suppress intestinal immunity. Many studies have confirmed that balanced diets containing basic nutritional requirements are the primary factor for maintaining intestinal health in aquatic animals. Another strategy for improving the intestine's local immunity is to use some non‐nutritional food additives that increase the activity of beneficial bacteria and the secretion of digestive enzymes and decrease the harmful bacteria. This review article aimed to clarify the relationship between a balanced aquafeed and the intestinal health of aquatic animals by discussing the findings of related studies. Awareness of this correlation between diet and intestinal health is expected to aid the aquaculture industry to develop proper nutritional strategies that ensure the protection of fish health.</p>

Abstract:Seaweed, also known as macroalgae, represents a vast resource that can be categorized into three taxonomic groups: Rhodophyta (red), Chlorophyta (green), and Phaeophyceae (brown). They are a good source of essential nutrients such as proteins, minerals, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids. Seaweed also contains a wide range of functional metabolites, including polyphenols, polysaccharides, and pigments. This study comprehensively discusses seaweed and seaweed-derived metabolites and their potential as a functional feed ingredient in aquafeed for aquaculture production. Past research has discussed the nutritional role of seaweed in promoting the growth performance of fish, but their effects on immune response and gut health in fish have received considerably less attention in the published literature. Existing research, however, has demonstrated that dietary seaweed and seaweed-based metabolite supplementation positively impact the antioxidant status, disease resistance, and stress response in fish. Additionally, seaweed supplementation can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibit the proliferation of harmful bacteria, thereby improving gut health and nutrient absorption in fish. Nevertheless, an important balance remains between dietary seaweed inclusion level and the resultant metabolic alteration in fish. This review highlights the current state of knowledge and the associated importance of continued research endeavors regarding seaweed and seaweed-based functional metabolites as potential modulators of growth, immune and antioxidant response, and gut microbiota composition in fish.

Abstract:Abstract Phytogenics are plant-derived natural compounds in the diets that aim to improve animal production. Several of these plant-derived substances have been tested in various aquaculture fish species particularly on their effects on growth and systemic immune response. Most of the previous studies demonstrated positive effects in improving growth, lowering the feed conversion ratio (FCR) and modulating the various immune response parameters in fish. While nutritional strategies are mostly designed towards the use of plant-based materials as feed ingredients or partial substitutions for the more expensive fish meal in the fish diets, recent initiatives have been targeting the use of these phytogenics as feed additives. The tissues and organs of the digestive system are the ones that have close contact with the phytogenic additives once these are ingested by the fish. Once, digested and absorbed, these substances are distributed throughout the body where they affect the physiological conditions of the fish, including its ability to provide resistance against various infectious diseases. The present work provides a short review on the effects during dietary administration with these phytogenics on gut health and disease resistance in fish. A synthesis of available information on these biological aspects in fish will provide a platform towards developing functional feeds in aquaculture.

Abstract:Antibiotics are the primary measures employed in the prevention and treatment of diseases in aquaculture. However, the frequent utilization of antibiotics can significantly impact the growth and reproduction of aquatic organisms, resulting in water pollution. The European Union (EU) has prohibited antibiotic additives in animal feed. Potassium diformate (KDF) represents the first non-antibiotic feed additive approved by the EU as a viable alternative to antibiotics. Its application in animal nutrition has been validated, demonstrating beneficial health effects. This article reviews the physicochemical properties, biological functions, synthesis conditions, and applications of KDF in aquaculture and looks toward to its future potential. It also provides insights into improving the utilization of KDF in aquaculture practices.

Abstract:Edible fungi and algae possess some properties that contain antitumor, anti-oxidation, antibacterial, free radical scavenging activities, immunomodulator and some other Functions, which have been used as feed supplement all over the world for decades. The addition of them as feed supplement has beneficial effect on growth performance in domestic animals by increasing average daily intake and feed efficiency. Moreover, the fungi can inform mycelium pellet in Shaker, which is contribute to keep the algae inside, or forming a mutuality symbiosis alga-fungus sphere, which is effectively used in swine manure biogases slurry decontamination in our experiment.

Abstract:Advances in the understanding of how the immune system functions in response to diet have altered the way we think about feeding livestock and companion animals on both the short (weeks/months) and long-term (years) timelines; however, depth of research in each of these species varies. Work dedicated to understanding how immune function can be altered with diet has revealed additional functions of required nutrients such as vitamins D and E, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and minerals such as zinc, while feed additives such as phytogenics and probiotics add an additional layer of immunomodulating potential to modern diets. For certain nutrients such as vitamin D or omega-3 PUFA, inclusion above currently recommended levels may optimize immune function and reduce inflammation, while for others such as zinc, additional pharmacological supplementation above requirements may inhibit immune function. Also to consider is the potential to over-immunomodulate, where important functions such as clearance of microbial infections may be reduced when supplementation reduces the inflammatory action of the immune system. Continued work in the area of nutritional immunology will further enhance our understanding of the power of nutrition and diet to improve health in both livestock and companion animals. This review collects examples from several species to highlight the work completed to understand how nutrition can be used to alter immune function, intended or not.

Abstract:The aquafeed industry increasingly relies on using sustainable and appropriate protein sources to ensure the long-term sustainability and financial viability of intensive aquaculture. Yeast has emerged as a viable substitute protein source in the aquaculture sector due to its potential as a nutritional supplement. A substantial body of evidence exists to suggest that yeast has the potential to act as an effective immune-stimulating agent for a range of aquaculture fish species. Furthermore, the incorporation of yeast supplements and feed additives has the potential to bolster disease prevention, development, and production within the aquaculture sector. Except for methionine, lysine, arginine, and phenylalanine, which are typically the limiting essential amino acids in various fish species, the various yeast species exhibit amino acid profiles that are advantageous when compared to fishmeal. The present review considers the potential nutritional suitability of several yeast species for fish, with particular attention to the various applications of yeast in aquaculture nutrition. The findings of this study indicate that the inclusion of yeast in the diet resulted in the most favorable outcomes, with improvements observed in the overall health, growth performance, and nutritional condition of the fish. Digestibility, a key factor in sustainable feed development, is discussed in special detail. Additionally, this review addresses the utilization of yeast as an immunostimulating agent for fish and its digestion in fish. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the necessity of large-scale production of yeast as a substitute for fishmeal in aquaculture.

Abstract:Similar to other industries, aquaculture constantly requires new techniques to increase production yields. Modern technologies and different scientific fields, such as biotechnology and microbiology, provide important tools that could lead to a higher quality and a greater quantity of products. New feeding practices in farming typically play an important role in aquaculture, and the addition of various additives to a balanced feed formula to achieve better growth is a common practice of many fish and shrimp feed manufacturers and farmers. As ‘bio‐friendly agents’, immunostimulants, such as biological factors, probiotics and vitamins, can be introduced into the culture environment to control and kill pathogenic bacteria, as well as to promote growth of the cultured organisms. In addition, immunostimulants are non‐pathogenic and non‐toxic and do not produce undesirable side effects when administered to aquatic organisms. In this review, we summarize previous studies performed with both traditional immunostimulants and the most promising new generation of immunostimulants, such as polysaccharides, nutrients, oligosaccharides, herbs, microorganisms, prebiotics and different biological factors. This review primarily focuses on their protective efficacies and on what is known concerning their effects on the immune systems of aquatic organisms when delivered in vivo.

Abstract:The gastrointestinal immune system plays an important role in immune homeostasis regulation. It regulates the symbiotic host-microbiome interactions by training and developing the host’s innate and adaptive immunity. This interaction plays a vital role in host defence mechanisms and at the same time, balancing the endogenous perturbations of the host immune homeostasis. The fish gastrointestinal immune system is armed with intricate diffused gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALTs) that establish tolerance toward the enormous commensal gut microbiome while preserving immune responses against the intrusion of enteric pathogens. A comprehensive understanding of the intestinal immune system is a prerequisite for developing an oral vaccine and immunostimulants in aquaculture, particularly in cultured fish species. In this review, we outline the remarkable features of gut immunity and the essential components of gut-associated lymphoid tissue. The mechanistic principles underlying the antigen absorption and uptake through the intestinal epithelial, and the subsequent immune activation through a series of molecular events are reviewed. The emphasis is on the significance of gut immunity in oral administration of immunoprophylactics, and the different potential adjuvants that circumvent intestinal immune tolerance. Comprehension of the intestinal immune system is pivotal for developing effective fish vaccines that can be delivered orally, which is less labour-intensive and could improve fish health and facilitate disease management in the aquaculture industry.
