Abstract:In the presence of trisodium citrate dihydrate the formation of 2D cyanide-bridged coordination polymers is slower as the complex as reactant appears to be more stable, leading to a preferential growth. The resulting material has a 2D nanoflake-like morphology and can be assigned as a Hofmann-type coordination polymer in which Ni atoms are bridged by cyano groups. After heat treatment, nanoporous NiO flakes are formed successfully. When used as an electrode, the nanoporous NiO flakes show a high specific capacitance, making such material an excellent candidate for future supercapacitor applications. For more details see the Full Paper by Y. Yamauchi et al. on page 3605 ff. Wang describe the concept of replacing the CC unit with its isoelectronic BN unit in organic π-systems and summarized the initial work and recent development of BN-substituted polycyclic aromatics. BN substitution has shown to be effective in modulating the photophysical and redox properties as well as intermolecular interactions of conjugated molecules, thus providing a new family of BN-embedded polycyclic aromatics with intriguing properties.1 Synthetic Antimicrobial Peptides Natural antimicrobial peptides are an integral part of the defense mechanism of many organisms. In their Communication on page 3540 ff., A. Bajaj, V. Jain, A. Srivastava et al. report on polyaspartamides that act as non-membrane-lytic synthetic antimicrobial peptides (SAMPs), selectively killing Mycobacterium smegmatis over Escherichia coli or mammalian cells. The antibacterial action is linked to cellular uptake of these SAMPs, which is inhibited in E. coli by the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) layer. Upon internalization, the SAMPs interact with the exposed genomic DNA of bacteria, killing the bacteria as a consequence. 1 Oligonucleotides In their Full Paper on page 3596 ff., J. E. Šponer et al. report on the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations used to investigate whether tetraloop-like overhang geometries might give rise to ribozyme-like activity in short Watson–Crick complementary oligoG/oligoC sequences. Their results demonstrate that the studied tetraloop-like overhang geometries are able to stabilize the 2′- and 3′-OH groups of the acceptor ribose in the vicinity of the phosphate of the donor strand for several tens to hundreds of nanoseconds, which is entirely sufficient for the required transphosphorylation reactions to proceed.1
