Abstract:Presently, more than 925 million people around the world face extreme hunger and 2 billion people lack adequate food security. The first and foremost objective of the millennium development goals (MDGs) set in 2000 is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by the year 2015. Three years to the target date, plant-parasitic nematodes pose enormous threats to global food security, destroying at least 12.3% of global food production annually. This is estimated to be more than US$157 billion worldwide. Nematode diseases of crops are difficult to control because of the insidious nature of nematodes, and their diagnostic symptoms closely resemble that of other pathogens and abiotic diseases. In order to effectively combat nematodes pests, it is necessary to define the problem in order to correctly search for lasting management strategies. The food insecurity facing millions of people especially in developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America is real. Finding lasting solution to this problem presents a daunting challenge for nematologists. The challenges of the future lies in increasing knowledge of nematodes and to use this knowledge in training, research and development (R&D) of new technologies, methods and strategies to be used in effective and sustainable control of the plant parasitic nematodes.

Abstract:Plants are constantly exposed to various phytopathogens such as fungi, Oomycetes, nematodes, bacteria, and viruses. These pathogens can significantly reduce the productivity of important crops worldwide, with annual crop yield losses ranging from 20% to 40% caused by various pathogenic diseases. While the use of chemical pesticides has been effective at controlling multiple diseases in major crops, excessive use of synthetic chemicals has detrimental effects on the environment and human health, which discourages pesticide application in the agriculture sector. As a result, researchers worldwide have shifted their focus towards alternative eco-friendly strategies to prevent plant diseases. Biocontrol of phytopathogens is a less toxic and safer method that reduces the severity of various crop diseases. A variety of biological control agents (BCAs) are available for use, but further research is needed to identify potential microbes and their natural products with a broad-spectrum antagonistic activity to control crop diseases. This review aims to highlight the importance of biocontrol strategies for managing crop diseases. Furthermore, the role of beneficial microbes in controlling plant diseases and the current status of their biocontrol mechanisms will be summarized. The review will also cover the challenges and the need for the future development of biocontrol methods to ensure efficient crop disease management for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:The escalating global population has led to an increased demand for both quantity and quality in food production. Throughout history, plant diseases have posed significant threats to agricultural output by causing substantial food losses annually while also compromising product quality. Accurate identification of pathogens, clarifying the pathogenic mechanism of pathogens, and understanding the interaction between pathogens and hosts are important for the control of plant diseases. This Special Issue, “Research Progress on Pathogenicity of Fungi in Crops”, belongs to the section “Pest and Disease Management” of Agronomy. It contains research papers on the identification and phylogeny of fungal pathogens, the molecular genetics of plant fungal pathogens, the molecular mechanisms of fungal pathogenicity, and the molecular basis of the interaction between fungi and crops. These studies encapsulate efforts to understand disease systems within current genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics studies, highlighting research findings that could be future targets for crop disease and pest control. The studies presented in this Special Issue promote the progress of fungal pathogenicity research in crops and provide a scientific basis for future disease control, which is of great significance for sustainable agricultural development and global food security.

Abstract:Emerging fungal and oomycete pathogens infect staple calorie crops and economically important commodity crops, thereby posing a significant risk to global food security. Our current agricultural systems — with emphasis on intensive monoculture practices — and globalized markets drive the emergence and spread of new pathogens and problematic traits, such as fungicide resistance. Climate change further promotes the emergence of pathogens on new crops and in new places. Here we review the factors affecting the introduction and spread of pathogens and current disease control strategies, illustrating these with the historic example of the Irish potato famine and contemporary examples of soybean rust, wheat blast and blotch, banana wilt and cassava root rot. Our Review looks to the future, summarizing what we see as the main challenges and knowledge gaps, and highlighting the direction that research must take to face the challenge of emerging crop pathogens.

Abstract:Plant diseases pose significant threats to global food security, necessitating innovative approaches for disease management and crop protection. This abstract provides an overview of the evolving field of plant pathology and highlights innovative methods aimed at enhancing disease resistance in crops. Traditional disease management strategies, including chemical pesticides and cultural practices, have limitations such as environmental pollution and pesticide resistance. In response, advancements in plant pathology have led to the development of sustainable and effective solutions for combating plant diseases. Biological control, genetic engineering, marker-assisted selection, RNA interference, and omics technologies are among the innovative methods revolutionizing disease resistance in crops. Biological control utilizes beneficial microorganisms to suppress plant pathogens, while genetic engineering enables the development of disease-resistant crop varieties through gene manipulation. Marker-assisted selection facilitates the breeding of disease-resistant crops, while RNA interference technology allows for the targeted suppression of genes involved in plant-pathogen interactions. Omics technologies provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying disease resistance, guiding the development of targeted interventions. Challenges in enhancing disease resistance include the emergence of new pathogens, pesticide resistance, regulatory hurdles, and socio-economic constraints. Abstract:Plant disease outbreaks are increasing and threaten food security for the vulnerable in many areas of the world. Now a global human pandemic is threatening the health of millions on our planet. A stable, nutritious food supply will be needed to lift people out of poverty and improve health outcomes. Plant diseases, both endemic and recently emerging, are spreading and exacerbated by climate change, transmission with global food trade networks, pathogen spillover, and evolution of new pathogen lineages. In order to tackle these grand challenges, a new set of tools that include disease surveillance and improved detection technologies including pathogen sensors and predictive modeling and data analytics are needed to prevent future outbreaks. Herein, we describe an integrated research agenda that could help mitigate future plant disease pandemics.

Abstract:Here we review several major historical triumphs made by plant pathologists and breeders to tackle fungal diseases predominantly of the top five food crops—rice, wheat, maize, soybean and potato. Ever since the first crops were domesticated over 10,000 years ago, pests and pathogens have wreaked havoc on crop production. Despite diverse threats from longstanding and emerging diseases, plants continue to play a central role in meeting humanity's requirements for calories and nutrients. In this review, we discuss historical advances made by plant pathologists and breeders that have helped keep many plant diseases at bay. We focus predominantly on fungal diseases of five food crops—rice, wheat, maize, soybean and potato—that provide the bulk of calories consumed globally. We cover such historical triumphs in plant pathology as (i) advanced knowledge of fungal biology revolutionizing disease management strategies, (ii) integration of genetics by the 'wheat wizard' Rowland Biffen and others transforming the landscape of resistance breeding and (iii) the advent of modern fungicides—from a sinking ship in the 1660s—leading to dramatic yield enhancements. We also discuss (iv) the potential for emerging biocontrol agents to holistically promote plant health and yield. Today, the high homogeneity of crops in modern agricultural systems exacerbates yield losses due to disease by increasing pest/pathogen transmission rates and eroding natural spatial barriers to pest/pathogen dispersal. Meanwhile, climate change is altering the compositions of global pest and pathogen populations and expanding pest/pathogen territories with unpredictable consequences. As we look to the future, the strength of the plant pathology community remains central to developing innovative solutions to tackle these complex and expanding threats to plant health and secure a plentiful food supply.

The extensive use of traditional preventive measures comprising toxic chemicals has become more problematic due to severe ecotoxicological challenges. To address this issue, engineered nanoparticles (NPs) with their distinct physical and chemical properties has gained scientific attention and can help plants to confront environmental challenges. Despite their ameliorative and beneficial effects, toxicological concerns have been raised about NPs. The recent development of biogenic NPs (bio-NPs) is getting attention in agriculture due to their diverse biocompatibility, better functional efficacy, and eco-friendly nature compared to the recalcitrant NPs, providing a promising strategy for increased crop protection against biotic and abiotic environmental stresses, with the ultimate goal of ensuring global food security. This review summarizes the recent advances in the engineering of bio-NPs with particular emphasis on the functions of bio-NPs in protecting plants from biotic and abiotic environmental stresses, delivery and entry routes of NPs to plant systems, nanotoxicity, and plant physiological/biochemical responses to nanotoxicity. Abstract:Chapter 5 discusses the plant diseases and pests that affect agricultural production in China, and thus food security. Because diseases of plants and insect pests are anthropocentric concepts, we begin the chapter by defining the functions they play in ecological renewal and the environmental conditions favoring pathogens and pests. Then we explore the broad range of economic damage they do to food crops, with data from recent years. Our examination then turns in some detail to migratory locusts, rice blast disease and wheat rust, which afflicted food crops throughout history and remain of great significance to the Chinese economy today. Other diseases and insect pests have reached epidemic scales, and we treat them by the major food crops they threaten: rice, wheat, maize (corn), potatoes and soybeans. Some plant pathogens not only affect crop yield but also endanger human and animal health, and we consider rice false smut, wheat scab, and other post-harvest diseases. Too, we consider farm cultural practices having an impact on diseases and pests as well as changes in government policy, including improvement of domestic transportation. Climate change is the broadest environmental change that may affect incidence and severity of disease and pest infestation. Finally, we describe the primary mitigation (or control) measures China has adopted. These include regulations and standards, cultural controls, biological control measures, and physical and chemical controls.

Abstract:Plant diseases are caused by various pathogenic microorganisms, leading to substantial economic losses and food insecurity worldwide. However, the extensive use of chemical-based nanopesticides has adverse effects on plants, soil, and environmental systems. There is increasing interest in developing eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to manage plant diseases. Recently, microbe-mediated nanoparticles (NPs) as nanopesticides have attracted the interest of cultivators, specifically in plant disease management, compared to traditional physical and chemical approaches. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art formulations of nanopesticides by using microorganisms against bacterial and fungal phytopathogens. The article discusses the various mechanisms through which these microbes contribute to the enhanced effectiveness of NPs, including the production of bioactive compounds, improved nanoparticle synthesis, and the facilitation of targeted delivery. The review also highlights the advantages of using microbe-mediated nanopesticides, such as reduced environmental toxicity, increased biodegradability, and the potential to manage pesticide-resistant pathogens. Overall, the use of microbe-mediated NPs is an inexpensive, reliable, and eco-friendly approach for plant disease management.

Abstract:The global human population is growing and demand for food is increasing. Global agriculture faces numerous challenges, including excessive application of synthetic pesticides, emergence of herbicide-and pesticide-resistant pathogenic microbes, and more frequent natural disasters associated with global warming. Searches for valuable endophytes have increased, with the aim of making agriculture more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Endophytic microbes are known to have a variety of beneficial effects on plants. They can effectively transfer nutrients from the soil into plants, promote plant growth and development, increase disease resistance, increase stress tolerance, prevent herbivore feeding, reduce the virulence of pathogens, and inhibit the growth of rival plant species. Endophytic microbes can considerably minimize the need for agrochemicals, such as fertilizers, fungicides, bactericides, insecticides, and herbicides in the cultivation of crop plants. This review summarizes current knowledge on the roles of endophytes focusing on their mechanisms of disease control against phytopathogens through the secretion of antimicrobial substances and volatile organic compounds, and the induction of systemic resistance in plants. Additionally, the beneficial roles of these endophytes and their metabolites in the control of postharvest diseases in plants have been summarized.

Abstract:Plants have an impact on the economy because they are used in the food and medical industries. Plants are a source of macro- and micronutrients for the health of humans and animals; however, the rise in microbial diseases has put plant health and yield at risk. Because there are insufficient controls, microbial infections annually impact approximately 25 % of the world's plant crops. Alternative strategies, such as biocontrol, are required to fight these illnesses. This review discusses the potential uses of recently discovered microorganisms because they are safe, effective, and unlikely to cause drug resistance. They have no negative effects on soil microbiology or the environment because they are environmentally benign. Biological control enhances indigenous microbiomes by reducing bacterial wilt, brown blotch, fire blight, and crown gall. More research is required to make these biocontrol agents more stable, effective, and less toxic before they can be used in commercial settings.

Abstract:Food security has become a major concern worldwide in recent years due to ever increasing population. Providing food for the growing billions without disturbing environmental balance is incessantly required in the current scenario. In view of this, sustainable modes of agricultural practices offer better promise and hence are gaining prominence recently. Moreover, these methods have taken precedence currently over chemical-based methods of pest restriction and pathogen control. Adoption of Biological Control is one such crucial technique that is currently in the forefront. Over a period of time, various biocontrol strategies have been experimented with and some have exhibited great success and promise. This review highlights the different methods of plant-pathogen control, types of plant pathogens, their modus operandi and various biocontrol approaches employing a range of microorganisms and their byproducts. The study lays emphasis on the use of upcoming methodologies like microbiome management and engineering, phage cocktails, genetically modified biocontrol agents and microbial volatilome as available strategies to sustainable agricultural practices. More importantly, a critical analysis of the various methods enumerated in the paper indicates the need to amalgamate these techniques in order to improve the degree of biocontrol offered by them.

Abstract:A principal application of Plant Pathology is the protection of crop yields, ensuring high food quality, maintaining low spoilage during post-harvest storage, and understanding the hostpathogen interaction. Plant Pathologists continually monitor the impact of microorganisms on our food supply by their effects on crop plant growth, infection of the harvests, persistence in processed products, interaction with the environment, and further spread in crop production areas. They routinely measure economic loss due to infection of plants by microorganisms and this helps formulate economic and scientific research policies to protect our plant food supplies. With the expected increase in the world’s population to around 9.1 billion [1-3], increase in crop production which includes limiting the effects of noxious weeds, insects, and diseases incited by fungi, viruses, nematodes, and bacteria will be needed to meet this challenge. Plant Pathologists will play an integral role by preventing the impact of plant diseases in the field through the identification of effective management strategies, understanding the interactions among the host, pathogen, vector, and the environment, monitoring any changes in the pathogen population, and utilizing reliable techniques, including molecular techniques for rapid evaluation and identification of resistant crop germplasm sources. The prevention of storage losses due to microorganisms, some of which have the capacity to produce mycotoxins both in the field and in storage also will be a critical factor in increasing food security.

Abstract:Plant pathogens with their abundance are harmful and cause huge damage to different agricultural crops and economy of a country as well as lead towards the shortage of food for humans. For their management, the utilization of entomopathogenic fungi is an eco-friendly technique, sustainable to the environment, safe for humans and has promising effect over chemical-based pesticides. This process requires a biochemical mechanism, including the production of enzymes, toxins, and other metabolites that facilitate host infection and invasion. Essential enzymes such as chitinase, proteinase, and lipase play a direct role in breaking down the host cuticle, the primary barrier to EPF (Entomopathogenic Fungi) infection. Additionally, secondary metabolites such as destruxins in Metarhizium , beauvericin in Beauveria , hirsutellides in Hirsutella , isarolides in Isaria , cordyols in Cordyceps , and vertihemipterins in Verticillium , among others, act both directly and indirectly to disable the defense mechanisms of insect hosts, thereby accelerating the EPF infection process. The chemical composition of these secondary metabolites varies, ranging from simple non-peptide pigments such as oosporine to highly complex piperazine derivatives such as vertihemiptellides. The biocontrol efficacy of EPF is extensively studied, with numerous fungal strains commercially available on a large scale for managing arthropod pests. This review emphasizes the role of proteins and enzymes against crop pathogens, detailing their mode of action, and describing the metabolites from entomopathogenic fungi and their biological activities. In doing so, these findings contribute to establishing a symbiotic equilibrium between agricultural productivity and environmental conservation.

Abstract:Fungal plant diseases are responsible for major crop and postharvest losses worldwide, with a signifi cant socio-economic impact on many individuals who depend on an agriculture-based economy. This review discusses the major constraints in identifying plant pathogenic fungi (severely destructive on important crops) in sample collection, fi eld, and morphological observations, fungal isolation, obtaining pure cultures, applying Koch’s postulates, DNA barcoding, phylogenetic analyses, and naming fungi (under “One fungus, One name” concept) based on selected case studies. Additionally, available strategies/methods to overcome those limitations up to date are also discussed. Ultimately, we proposed suggestions to minimize those limitations.
