Abstract:In this study, heat transfer of water at supercritical pressures in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The inner diameter of the tube was 26 mm with a heated length of 2 m. Experimental parameters included a mass flux ranging from 300 to 700 kg/m(2) s, a heat flux from 200 to 400 kW/m(2), a pressure from 23 to 25 MPa, and a bulk fluid enthalpy from 1000 to 3000 kJ/kg. The results indicated that heat transfer characteristics of supercritical water are not uniformly along the circumference of the horizontal tube. Decreasing in the heat flux could decrease the non-uniformity and eliminate deterioration on the top surface of the horizontal tube. With the pressure increasing, the amount of deterioration on the top surface is increased and enhancement on the bottom surface is decreased. By comparing with results of previous investigators, the effect of flow direction and diameter on heat transfer of water were analyzed in details. The criterions of Petukhov and Jackson were selected to judge buoyancy effects in a horizontal tube. It was found that the Petukhov criterion can accurately predict the onset of buoyancy effects. Furthermore, new heat transfer correlations have been proposed, which could be used to predict heat transfer coefficients of supercritical water flowing in horizontal tubes. (c) 2013 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:The heat transfer phenomenon at supercritical pressure is different from the normal pressure due to the strong variation of thermal physical properties near the pseudo-critical point. The strong change of density leads to a great buoyancy effect at low flow rate, and flow acceleration at high flow rate, both of which influence heat transfer characteristics significantly. In this paper an experimental study is performed to analysis the heat transfer behavior of supercritical water. The test section is a vertically 10-mm ID tube with uniformly heating. Heat transfer deterioration phenomenon caused by the buoyancy effect and the acceleration effect is identified. At the same time, the heat transfer character of upward and downward flow is numerical studied by an in-house CFD- code developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. An improved k-epsilon-k(t)-epsilon(t) model is proposed and installed in this code. The wall temperature, especially near the heat transfer deterioration, is well predicted by this new model, compared with the traditional turbulence models. It is shown that the buoyancy effect causes shear stress and radial flow velocity redistribution which leads to heat transfer deterioration and recovery. Moreover, buoyancy can influence the turbulent kinetic energy dramatically, which will affect heat transfer capacity. In the downward flow case with high flow rate, the effect of buoyancy on heat transfer is not so obvious. However, as found in numerical study, the heat transfer deterioration caused by flow acceleration can occur both in upward and downward flow. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In ultra-supercritical pressure region,the heat transfer characteristics of water in a vertical upward internally ribbed tube with the diameter of Φ28.6×5.8mm have been experimentally investigated.The tests have been performed under various conditions with the pressure ranging from 25 to 35Mpa,the mass velocity from 450 to 1800 kg/(m2.s),and the internal wall heat flux from 200 to 600 kW/m2.The results show that the heat transfer of ultra-supercritical water is better below the pseudo-critical point than that above the pseudo-critical point.Increasing the mass velocity can improve the heat transfer of ultra-supercritical water with a much stronger effect below the pseudo-critical point than that above the pseudo-critical point.The pressure has only a moderate effect on the heat transfer of ultra-supercritical water when the temperature of water is below the pseudo-critical point.Sharp rising of inner wall temperature near the pseudo-critical region takes place earlier at a higher pressure.For given pressure and mass velocity,the internal wall heat flux also shows a significant effect on the distributing of inner wall temperature.The inner wall temperatures are higher at a higher heat flux.Increasing of internal wall heat flux leads to an early occurrence of sharp rising of the wall temperature.Based on the experiments,correlations of heat transfer coefficients are also presented for the vertical upward internally ribbed tubes.

Abstract:Heat transfer of ultra-supercritical water in vertical upward tube under uniform heating was investigated experimentally and numerically. For comparison, similar studies under non-uniform heating were also simulated. The effects of specific heat ratio, buoyancy and acceleration on the heat transfer of ultra-supercritical water were discussed according to the experimental data. Results show that these dimensionless parameters have no single relationship of independence with the heat transfer coefficient which indicates that using them directly to predict heat transfer is inaccurate. The shear stress transport k-co model was used in the numerical simulation. Results concur with the experimental data to a high degree, which proves that the model has strong applicability in predicting heat transfer. The mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement and deterioration were analyzed through simulation results, and the integral of specific heat in the boundary layer and the buoyancy effect were confirmed to be their main factors, respectively. Furthermore, the differences between the uniform and non-uniform heating were also revealed. The wall temperature of smooth tube under non-uniform heating shows a parabola distribution, and the peak value occurs at the midpoint of the heated side. Moreover, the peak value of the wall temperature is higher under non-uniform heating than that under uniform heating; however, the heat flux is higher when heat transfer deterioration occurs. Abstract:Within the range of pressure from 22.5 to 30 MPa,mass flux from 1009 to 1626 kg/(m2·s),and inner wall heat flux from 216 to 822 kW/m2,an in-depth experiment was conducted under supercritical pressure to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of water in vertical upward smooth tube.The heat transfer characteristics of water under supercritical pressure were obtained in the experiment.The effects of pressure,inner wall heat flux and mass flux on the heat transfer coefficient and inner wall temperature were analyzed,the heat transfer mechanism was discussed,and the corresponding empirical correlations were also presented.The experimental results show that when the bulk fluid temperature is near the pseudo-critical temperature,the tube wall temperature increases slowly with the fluid enthalpy,the heat transfer coefficient gets larger abruptly and the heat transfer enhancement phenomenon occurs in the smooth tube.Otherwise,the tube wall temperature increases obviously with the increasing fluid enthalpy and the heat transfer coefficient is low.With the increase of pressure and inner wall heat flux,and with the decrease of mass flux,the inner wall temperature increases,the heat transfer coefficient decreases and the heat transfer enhancement is weakened.With the increase of inner wall heat flux,the maximum of heat transfer coefficient appears ahead.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of heat transfer to supercritical fluids is essential to improve the thermal efficiency of some advanced thermal systems. However, the mechanism remains unclear that how the heat transfer is affected by local temperature, especially the near-wall temperature. In this study, heat transfer experiments of supercritical water are conducted in a horizontal tube. Five local water temperatures from the near-wall region to the core in a cross-section are measured to clarify the heat transfer process with the operating pressure of 23.5-26.5 MPa, mass flux of 20 0-40 0 kg middotm(-2) s (-1) , and heat flux of 50-180 kW middotm(-2). The tube length and inner diameter are 60 0 0 mm and 26 mm, respectively. The results show that the heat transfer is suppressed and the enthalpy increase is no longer linear before the pseudo-critical point. Heat transfer is dominated by the relative magnitude of buoyancy and inertia force, which are affected by heat flux and mass flux, respectively. Moreover, the heat transfer process is divided into four parts, and the heat transfer deterioration occurs at the end of part II and restores in part III. Finally, a new correlation which is suitable for supercritical heat transfer in horizontal tubes with large diameters is developed based on the present experimental data. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Heat transfer performance of working medium is important for supercritical units. In this work, heat transfer experiments and simulations were carried out at 25 to 29.8 MPa for a supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) unit. The impacts and influence mechanisms of operational parameters on heat transfer characteristics were analyzed. To describe the fluid heat absorption ability, a new metric called heat capacity flux ( cdvr ) was proposed. The findings indicate that molecular thermal conductivity, turbulent thermal conductivity and heat capacity flux are the three types of factors influencing heat transfer characteristics. As mass flux rises, the molecular thermal conductivity, turbulent thermal conductivity and cdvr both increases, leading to an improvement in heat transfer performance. The impact of heat flux is mainly showed in high enthalpy zone where the increase of heat flux weakens the heat transfer characteristics. Due to the increase in molecular thermal conductivity and turbulent thermal conductivity, heat transfer enhances as heat flux decreases. Large specific heat zone, where the thermophysical parameters vary quickly, is where the influence of pressure is most evident. Because of the high turbulent thermal conductivity and cdvr, , the heat transfer characteristics get better as pressure drops. Finally, typical heat transfer correlations were evaluated using experiment results. The Bishop, Mokry and MiropoiskiiShitsman correlations exhibited relatively large errors, and the correlations proposed by Swenson and Jackson have a low error and are highly consistent with the experiment results.

Abstract:Deeply analysis and prediction of turbulent convection heat transfer of supercritical pressure fluid in one-side non-uniform heating vertical tube plays a major role in system design and security. The Over-prediction of convection heat transfer of supercritical pressure fluid in vertical tube is attributed, at least partly, to the invalid of turbulent model on simulating the buoyancy effect. The present paper adopt an improved turbulent model, which is validated suitable to three dimensional model, to simulate flow and heat transfer of supercritical pressure water in vertical non-uniform heating tube. Heat transfer deterioration phenomenon occurs in non-uniform heating condition, while the degree of deterioration is weaken due to the influence of variable physical properties and buoyancy effect. The velocity profile is distorted into “M-shape” in the heating side and present parabolic distribution in the adiabatic side, which lead to different deterioration mechanisms in non-uniform heating condition. The larger density difference between the heating side and the adiabatic side increase the shear stress production of turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent development is much faster recovery than the phenomenon in uniform heating condition. The results show that non-uniform heating condition can effectively alleviate the degree of heat transfer deterioration in vertical tube.

Abstract:A numerical study is conducted to investigate heat transfer characteristics of supercritical water flowing upward in an inclined smooth tube under uniform heating conditions. In this study, model verification was performed under the conditions of low heat flux and high heat flux to ensure the accuracy of experimental data. Inner wall temperature and heat flux distribute non-uniformly on the circumference due to the influence of natural convection. The increase of heat flux enhances the non-uniform circumferential distribution, while the increase of mass flux reduces the non-uniform circumferential distribution. Heat transfer of upward vertical and inclined flows is compared under low and high heat flux conditions. Radial distributions of fluid temperature, density, specific heat capacity, velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy are presented and analyzed. The analysis shows that the increase of heat flux reduces radial turbulence and heat-absorbing capacity of the boundary fluid, while increases radial temperature and density gradient. Three dimensionless buoyancy parameters are used to evaluate the buoyancy effect of inclined flow.

Abstract:For a heat exchanger, the heat flux is usually non-uniform in the axial direction, and the knowledge about heat transfer of supercritical water with axially non-uniform heating is scarce. To fill the gap, experiments were conducted in a horizontal tube to study the heat transfer characteristics of supercritical water with axially sinusoidal heating. The pressures varied from 23.5 to 26.5 MPa, mass fluxes 200 to 400 kg center dot m -2 center dot s -1 and average heat fluxes 50 to 150 kW center dot m -2. Compared with uniform heat flux, the temperature difference between the top and bottom wall is larger than that of the axially sinusoidal heat flux. The inner-wall heat flux is non-uniform along the circumference due to the temperature difference, being higher at the side wall and lower at the top wall. A relative heat flux parameter is defined to describe the relative magnitude of the local heat flux. The relative heat flux parameter of the top generatrix, which is inversely proportional to the average heat flux, decreases linearly with the increase of the temperature difference between the top and side generatrix. The non-uniform degree of heat flux along the circumference is positively correlated with the average heat flux. Additionally, the local heat transfer characteristics should be considered in horizontal tubes. On the one hand, the heat transfer deterioration may occur when the fluid temperature near the top wall is higher than the pseudo-critical temperature and it can be suppressed with increasing Reynolds number. On the other hand, the local heat transfer can be enhanced if the side and bottom wall temperatures exceed the pseudo-critical temperature.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Numerical Investigation of Supercritical Water Turbulent Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics in Vertical Helical Tubes

Abstract:Heat transfer of supercritical water turbulent flow in helical and straight tubes is simulated using the SST k - omega model to investigate the effects of property variations, buoyancy forces and centrifugal forces. Compared with constant property water flow, centrifugal forces near the wall are decreased due to lower densities while centrifugal forces in the center are increased due to higher densities, which result in stronger secondary flow intensity for supercritical water flow. Due to large buoyancy forces, the secondary flow is stretched. The maximum secondary flow velocity near the bottom wall region is 17.6% higher than that near the top wall region. For heating conditions, the axial velocities are accelerated in the flow direction and result in increased secondary flow intensities. However, when the bulk temperature reaching the pseudo-critical temperature, the temperature distributions are flattened and the non-uniformities of wall temperature distributions are decreased due to the higher effective thermal conductivities.

Abstract:In this study, the heat transfer of supercritical water in uniformly heated vertical tube is numerically investigated with three different turbulence models, i.e., the renormalisation group (RNG) k-e model, the shear stress transport (SST) k-ω model and the Reynolds stress model (RSM). In order to find suitable turbulence models for engineering applications, for example, the supercritical water-cooled reactor (SCWR), the results are compared with experimental results by Yamagata et al. (1972) firstly. It has been found that, as the physical properties of supercritical water change rapidly with temperature in pseudo-critical region, these turbulence models, which are simplified, based on isotropic flow and constant physical properties, do not agree well with the experimental results, and even fail in some cases. The numerical results of RSM are also not good enough as expected near critical point. To further explore the flow and heat transfer mechanism in supercritical water, sub-cooled nucleate boiling under subcritical pressure is also numerically investigated in order to find the similarities and differences with those under supercritical pressure.

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to investigating the difference of heat transfer characteristics between horizontal and vertical upward flows of supercritical pressure water. An Experimental study is conducted with both horizontal and vertical upward tubes (empty set 32 mm x 3 mm), covering a range of mass fluxes (G) from 200 to 600 kg.m(-2).s(-1), heat fluxes (q) up to 400 kW.m(-2), and pressure (P) from 23 to 28 MPa. Heat transfer characteristics are analyzed in detail for selected parameters. The results show at low q/G, an apparent heat transfer enhancement and insignificant difference in the two arrangements. However, when the q/G increases to a higher value (i.e. q/G > 0.5), heat transfer deterioration occurs and a noticeable heat transfer discrepancy is detected, where the inner-wall temperature of vertical flow far exceeds that of horizontal flow. Dimensionless parameters, Bo(+), Kv, and BTH are adopted to analyze the effects of buoyancy force and thermal acceleration for both flows. The analysis suggests that mechanisms governing horizontal and vertical flows of supercritical pressure water are different at high q/G or in deteriorated heat transfer mode. For the vertical flow, thermal acceleration plays a leading role, while for the horizontal flow, the effect of buoyancy plays a larger effect than that for vertical flow. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Experiments were conducted to investigate the heat transfer and flow characteristics of the vertical upward smooth and rifled tubes from subcritical to supercritical pressure. The distributions of wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) were obtained, and the HTC correlations and friction resistance coefficient correlations were fitted with experimental data. In addition, the influences of heat flux and type of tube on heat transfer performance were analyzed. The research shows that heat flux has different influences on the heat transfer characteristics under different pressures. The increase in heat flux improves the heat transfer characteristics in the nucleate boiling region, yet it leads to the advance in heat transfer deterioration. However, for supercritical water, the increase in heat flux reduces the heat transfer ability. In addition, using the rifled tube not only improves the heat transfer performance, but also inhibits the occurrence of heat transfer deterioration. The fitted correlations have great predictive ability for the heat transfer coefficient and friction resistance coefficient, and the average relative fitting errors are limited to 20%.

Abstract:In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of supercritical water in a horizontal double-pipe were investigated via experiments and numerical simulations. The influence of pressure (23 MPa, 25 MPa and 28 MPa) and mass flow rates (540 kgth(-1), 573 kgth(-1) and 604 kgth(-1)) were studied by experiments at the inlet temperature of tube 563 K, the inlet temperature of shell varying from 626 K to 756 K. The influence of unilateral mass flow rates varying from 273 kg.h.(-1) to 873 kg.h(-1) and the local heat transfer characteristics were studied via numerical simulations. The Shear-Stress Transport k - omega (SST) model and four selected models have been validated against experiments. The comparison suggests that Shear-Stress Transport k - omega (SST) model exhibited the best prediction. The results indicated that the effect of the pressure on heat transfer coefficients depends on bulk temperature, and the coefficients increase with the mass flow rate. When the fluid approaches pseudo-critical temperature, the heat transfer is improved. Nevertheless, the peak heat transfer coefficient occurs at a bulk temperature that is slightly higher than the pseudo-critical point. This phenomenon is strongly correlated with the specific heat of the near-wall fluid, and it is mainly caused by a temperature imbalance between the bulk and the near-wall fluid of the shell side. The imbalance is due to a significant bulk temperature difference between the tube and the shell or a small mass flow rate of the shell side. Finally, the overall value of the local heat transfer coefficient is determined by the fluid temperature of the near-wall region.

Abstract:The present paper was devoted to clarifying the effect of buoyancy on heat transfer characteristics of supercritical pressure water flowing in horizontal tubes. Experiments were conducted in horizontal tubes with inner diameters of 26 mm and 43 mm. Operating conditions included mass fluxes of 300-1000 kg/m(2) s, heat fluxes up to 400 kW/m(2), and a pressure of 25 MPa. Based on the experimental data, the difference of heat transfer characteristics between the top and bottom surfaces of a horizontal tube was analyzed. It was found that the buoyancy effect makes the low density hot water gather at the top surface of the horizontal tube; hence, heat transfer condition is deteriorated and wall temperature is increased. The effects of mass flux, flow direction and tube diameters on the heat transfer characteristics of water in horizontal tubes were discussed in detail. Jackson and Petukhov buoyancy criterions were selected to judge the buoyancy effect in horizontal tubes. The results showed that when the buoyancy effect is significant, both criterions are able to predict the onset of buoyancy effect. Abstract:In this paper, a numerical model was built by ANSYS FLUENT to investigate the heat transfer performances of supercritical water in a circumferential non-uniformly heated vertical tube. The Shear Stress Transport (SST) k - ω model was adopted for describing turbulence. The operating parameters are chosen according to a 660 MW ultra-supercritical CFB boiler. The heat transfer performances under different operating parameters, such as boiler load, flow direction and heat flux distribution are analyzed. The temperature and heat flux on inner wall varies along the circumference and show symmetric distributions. The overall heat transfer performances at each cross section are better than the local heat transfer performance of midpoint of heating side. Flow direction has a great influence on heat transfer performance; it changes the radial distribution of axial velocity and then affects the turbulence distribution. Therefore, upward flow condition shows a better heat transfer performance. Smaller heat flux improves both the overall and local heat transfer performances. Reducing the heat flux area is not conducive to the overall heat transfer, but does not affect the local heat transfer at the midpoint of heating side. Finally, a new correlation is fitted based on the simulated results of supercritical water heat transfer with circumferential non-uniform heat flux distributions.

Abstract:Numerical simulation on flows and heat transfer of water at supercritical pressures in inclined upward smooth tubes of Φ32 mm ×3 mm at an angle of 20° respect to the horizon is made. Length of the tube is 8 000 mm. Influence of violent variation of water properties in the so-called "large specific heat region" on heat transfer characteristics was investigated. Numerical method was validated by comparing numerical results with experimental data. Variation of the inner surface temperature of tube wall with enthalpy of water, mass flow rate and heat flux were obtained at pressures of 26 MPa and 34 MPa, respectively. It was found that distributions of wall temperature, as well as heat flux, along tube wall' s circumference were non-uniform. Difference between top generatrix wall temperatures and the bottom generatrix wall temperature was analyzed. Effect of water properties in the so-call "large specific heat region" on heat transfer of water was also discussed. Two parameters, namely cross-section transverse kinetic energy and cross-section relative transverse kinetic energy were introduced to quantitatively describe intensity of secondary flow. And density grads along a cross-section perpendicular bisector were used to analysis secondary flow. Abnormal mechanism of inner wall temperature distribution in a large specific region in inclined upward tubes at supercritical pressures was discussed.

Abstract:T he heat transfer at supercritical pressure is mainly characterized by the ther-mo-physical properties w hich vary strongly near the vicinity of pseudo-critical point . The strong variation of density leads to great buoyancy effect at low flow rate ,which imposes great influence on supercritical fluid flow and heat transfer . The convection heat transfer deterioration of supercritical water in 10 mm vertical tube was studied ,and an improved low Reynolds turbulent model was proposed in numerical study to analyze the heat transfer deterioration phenomenon .T he calculation results of supercritical fluid heat transfer show that traditional turbulence models overestimate wall temperature , but the present model can predict wall temperature correctly .The numerical results also show the buoyancy effect on turbulent shear stress and flow velocity distribution ,w hich leads to heat transfer deterioration and recovery .

Abstract:In this study, experiments have been performed for an investigation on heat transfer of water in an inclined downward tube with an inner diameter of 20 mm and an inclined angle of 45° from the horizon, with the range of pressure from 11.5 to 28 MPa, mass flux from 450 to 1550 kg/(m 2 s), and heat flux from 50 to 585 kW/m 2 . Based on the experimental data, the temperature distribution in the tube wall was derived. The heat transfer characteristics of inclined downward flow were compared with that of vertical downward flow. The effects of heat flux on wall temperature were analyzed and the corresponding empirical correlations were presented. The results show that heat transfer characteristics of water in the inclined downward tube are not uniform along the circumference from the top surface to the bottom surface. An increase in heat flux exacerbates the non-uniformity. At subcritical pressures, both dry-out and departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) occur at the top surface of the inclined downward tube; inversely, only dry-out takes place on the bottom surface of the inclined downward tube and in the vertical downward tube. At near-critical pressures, DNB and dry-out occur in the comparing tubes with greater possibility. At supercritical pressures, heat transfer gets enhanced in the pseudo-critical enthalpy region; in the high enthalpy region, the top surface temperature of the inclined downward tube decreases obviously.
