Abstract:Condition monitoring and diagnosis of the gears is essential to ensure the reliability of the whole mechanical equipment. Sensing technology based on acoustic signals plays a vital role in gear fault diagnosis with its advantages of non-contact and flexible installation. However, the signals detected by acoustic sensing are interfered by spatial noise from the operating environment and other equipment. This interference hampers the detection of weak fault features in gears, thereby limiting the applicability of acoustic sensing technology for fault diagnosis. In this study, combining the great advantages of acoustic wave manipulation and modulation by phononic crystals (PnC) and acoustic metamaterials, a phononic crystal resonator (PnCR) with the ability of directional enhancement of acoustic signals is proposed for fault detection in gears. In contrast to traditional acoustic diagnostic techniques, this method can enhance gear fault features in the desired direction at the front end of the sensing layer while simultaneously suppressing noise from other directions, eliminating the need for large-sized acoustic array systems and complex post-processing algorithms. The effectiveness of the designed PnCR directional acoustic enhancement is explored through numerical simulation and experimental validation. In addition, compared to the conventional resonance demodulation method based on spectral kurtosis, the device exhibits more excellent gear fault orientation enhancement performance at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). This work provides new ideas for the development of acoustic sensing with both high sensitivity and high directivity, which has a broad potential for application in the field of mechanical equipment fault diagnosis.
