Abstract:A V2C MXene has a high theoretical capacity and low diffusion barrier, showing tremendous potential in lithium-ion batteries. However, most reports on V2C focus on a multilayered structure that is stacked, which diminishes the ionic accessibility and results in unsatisfactory cycling stability. Therefore, we synthesized a few-layer V2C (f-V2C) material and added multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The formed f-V2C/MWCNT provides abundant pores, which enhance ionic accessibility, so that Li+ can easily enter the layer space. The introduction of MWCNTs can further separate the f-V2C, expand the specific surface area, reduce the charge transfer resistance, and heighten the structural stability. The experiments reveal that f-V2C/MWCNT has a high specific capacity of 531 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles. Even at a high current density of 5.0 A g-1, the specific capacity can still reach 166 mA h g-1. Moreover, the f-V2C/MWCNT structure shows good cycling stability with a capacity retention rate of 95% after 1000 cycles at 5.0 A g-1. The above findings indicate that f-V2C/MWCNT has great application potential in the field of Li+ storage.

Abstract:V2CTx MXene has shown potential as an electrode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. However, most reports on V2CTx are confined to multilayer structures in LIBs, and V2CTx nanosheets have a serious restacking problem, which results in their low cyclic stability. Herein, we report the synthesis of few-layer V2CTx/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite by tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) delamination and electrostatic flocculation of NH4+ ions. Few-layer V2CTx nanosheets with crimped structure can effectively restrain restacking and guarantee full utilization of active surface area. Moreover, with the introduction of CNTs, a developed electrical conductivity network was formed, and CNTs provided structural support for the sheets further restraining their restacking, and ensuring their stable structure during the charge and discharge process even at high rates. This made the few-layer V2CTx/CNT to exhibit a high specific capacitance of 621 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.1 A/g, and outstanding rate performance of 290 mAh/g at 5 A/g. Furthermore, the few-layer V2CTx/CNT electrode showed excellent cycling stability with 82.1 % capacitance retention after 2000 cycles at 5 A/g. This shows it has significant potential for lithium-ion batteries applications.

Abstract:Li 3 VO 4 is notable for its high theoretical capacity and favorable lithium-ion insertion potential, making it a promising candidate for lithium storage applications. However, its practical use is limited by low electronic conductivity, which results in reduced electrochemical performance and significant resistance polarization during lithium storage. Herein, we developed a Li 3 VO 4 /V 2 CT x heterostructure using a MXene-derived approach, where Li 3 VO 4 is anchored onto a conductive V 2 CT x MXene substrate. Theoretical calculations suggest that the heterostructure exhibits enhanced lithium adsorption capabilities compared to V 2 CT x , indicating improved interactions with lithium ions. The synthesized Li 3 VO 4 /V 2 CT x heterostructure demonstrates excellent rate performance and cycling stability. Additionally, a lithium-ion capacitor utilizing this heterostructure as the anode and activated carbon as the cathode achieves impressive power density and energy density. This study underscores the potential of this heterostructure as a high-performance anode material and offers valuable insights for the design of other advanced electrode materials.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of uniform multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)@Si nanocomposites via the magnesiothermic reduction of pre-synthesized MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables. At first, the acid vapor steaming is used to treat the surface, which can facilitate the uniform deposition of SiO2 layer via the TEOS hydrolysis. Then, the uniform MWCNT@Si nanocomposites are obtained on the basis of MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables via a simple magnesiothermic reduction. When used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized MWCNT@Si nanocomposites show high reversible capacity and good cycling performance, which is better than bulk Si and bare MWCNTs. It is believed that the good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the novel porous nanostructure and the introduction of MWCNTs that can buffer the volume change, maintain the electrical conductive network, and enhance the electronic conductivity and lithium-ion transport. Layer-By-Layer Polyelectrolyte Assisted Growth of 2d Ultrathin Mos2 Nanosheets on Various 1d Carbons for Superior Li-Storage

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide/carbon hybrids with well-defined structures could not only maximize the functional properties of each constituent but engender some unique synergistic effects, holding great promise for applications in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors and for catalysis. Herein, a facile and versatile approach is developed to controllably grow 2D ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with a large quantity of exposed edges onto various 1D carbons, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), electrospun carbon nanofibers, and Te-nanowire-templated carbon nanofibers. The typical approach involves the employment of layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte, which controls spatially the uniform growth and orientation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on these 1D carbons irrespective of their surface properties. Such unique structures of the as-prepared CNTs@MoS2 hybrid are significantly favorable for the fast diffusions of both Li-ions and electrons, satisfying the kinetic requirements of high-power lithium ion batteries. As a result, CNTs@MoS2 hybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage, including a high reversible capacity (1027 mAh g(-1)), high-rate capability (610 mAh g(-1) at 5 C), and excellent cycling stability (negligible capacity loss after 200 continuous cycles).

Abstract:With the unique-layered structure, MXenes show potential as electrodes in energy-storage devices including lithium-ion (Li+) capacitors and batteries. However, the low Li+-storage capacity hinders the application of MXenes in place of commercial carbon materials. Here, the vanadium carbide (V2C) MXene with engineered interlayer spacing for desirable storage capacity is demonstrated. The interlayer distance of pristine V2C MXene is controllably tuned to 0.735 nm resulting in improved Li-ion capacity of 686.7 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), the best MXene-based Li+-storage capacity reported so far. Further, cobalt ions are stably intercalated into the interlayer of V2C MXene to form a new interlayer-expanded structure via strong V-O-Co bonding. The intercalated V2C MXene electrodes not only exhibit superior capacity up to 1117.3 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), but also deliver a significantly ultralong cycling stability over 15 000 cycles. These results clearly suggest that MXene materials with an engineered interlayer distance will be a rational route for realizing them as superstable and high-performance Li+ capacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Compared to other transitiOn metal oxides, V2O3 with a higher conductivity has attracted intense attention in energy storage fields. TO further improve its rate capability and Cycling stability, we demonstrate the synthesis Of carbon-encapsulated ultrafine V2O3 nanowires (V2O3@C NWs) hybrids. The optimized V2O3@C Nws hybrids, when applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIB), deliver a high specific capacity of 985 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA which is higher than V2O3 nanopartides (V2O3 NPs, 248 mA h g(-1)) and even 2.6 times higher than graphite anodes: More significantly, they also exhibit remarkably enhanced rate capability (519 mA h CI at 5000 g(-1)) and long cycle life (860 mA h g(-1) at 1000 mA after 300 cycles). Such fascinating electrochetnical performance is mainly attributed to the liiiiform coating of carbon and their ultrafine nanostrixture, which can further improve the conductivity arid enrich the eiettrothenlical active sits.
Interlayer-expanded and Carbon-Coated VS2 Nanosheets Self-Assembled on 3D CNTs Cross-Linked Network Skeleton for Ultrastable Lithium-Ion Storage

Abstract:Layered VS2 has high theoretical capacity and is considered a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, its poor cycle stability seriously affects its commercial application. The smart design of anode material microstructure is a crucial point to optimize the stability of batteries. Herein, a hierarchical composite of VS2/ CNTs/C was successfully fabricated via a simple one-step solvothermal method, in which few-layer VS2 nanosheets were in situ self-assembled on a 3D CNTs cross-linked network skeleton and coated with a thin carbon layer. The interlayer spacing of (001) planes of VS2 nanosheets was expanded from 0.58 nm to 0.89 nm due to NH4+ intercalation during the solvothermal reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that expanded interlayer spacing of VS2 can enhance the electron conductivity and significantly reduce the diffusion barrier of Li+. More importantly, the 3D CNTs skeleton could prevent the aggregation of VS2 nanosheets, provide a fast ionic/electronic migration channel, and ensure a large specific surface area and an extra buffer space. In addition, the carbon coating could further increase the conductivity and stabilize the connection between the VS2 nanosheets and CNTs skeleton. Benefiting from their synergistic effects, the VS2/CNTs/C electrode exhibited an enormous Li+ diffusion coefficient and favorable capacitive kinetics, and delivered excellent lithium storage performance, such as a large reversible specific capacity of 1075 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, a high rate performance of 592 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1, and a remarkable cycling stability with a specific capacity of 629 mAh g-1 after 900 cycles at 1 A g-1. This work may guide the design of other similar anode materials and help to understand their energy storage mechanism.
MWCNT/V 2O 5 core/shell sponge for high areal capacity and power density Li-ion cathodes

Abstract:A multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) sponge network, coated by ALD V 2O 5, presents the key characteristics needed to serve as a high-performance cathode in Li-ion batteries, exploiting (1) the highly electron-conductive nature of MWCNT, (2) unprecedented uniformity of ALD thin film coatings, and (3) high surface area and porosity of the MWCNT sponge material for ion transport. The core/shell MWCNT/V 2O 5 sponge delivers a stable high areal capacity of 816 μAh/cm 2 for 2 Li/V 2O 5 (voltage range 4.0-2.1 V) at 1C rate (1.1 mA/cm 2), 450 times that of a planar V 2O 5 thin film cathode. At much higher current (50×), the areal capacity of 155 μAh/cm 2 provides a high power density of 21.7 mW/cm 2. The compressed sponge nanoarchitecture thus demonstrates exceptional robustness and energy-power characteristics for thin film cathode structures for electrochemical energy storage. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

However, severe nanosheets stacking and intra-layer transport barriers have limited the further development of V 2 CT X MXene-based materials. Herein, we prepared K + ions and -O functional group co-modified V 2 CT X MXene (VCT-K) and further incorporated it with single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), obtaining freestanding V 2 CT X composite films () with the 3D conductive network. Significantly, K + ions were introduced into V 2 CT X MXene to stabilize the interlayer structure and prevent the aggregation of nanosheets, the terminal group of -O was controllably modified on the surface of MXene to improve the Li + ions storage reversible capacities and the SWCNT acted as the bridge between MXene nanosheets to opens up the channels for ion/electron transportation in the longitudinal direction. Benefited from the synergistic effect of VCT-K and SWCNT, the exhibits superior reversible specific capacities of 671.8 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 318 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 . Furthermore, the assembled LICs with anode coupling activated carbon (AC) cathode deliver an outstanding power density of 19.0 kW kg −1 at 67.4 Wh kg −1 , a high energy density of 140.5 Wh kg −1 at 94.8 W kg −1 and a stable capacitance retention of 86% after 6000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . Such unique structures and excellent electrochemical properties are expected to pave the way for the large-scale application in LICs of MXene-based materials.

Abstract:Rapid charge and discharge cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries have been commonly researched for the development of electrical mobility applications. Here, an interpenetrating network vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanosheets/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposite was fabricated by a freeze-drying process. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy tests indicated that the CNTs and V2O5 nanosheets form an interpenetrating network structure. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirmed that the V2O5 nanosheets exhibit orthorhombic crystal structure and mixed element states in the nanocomposite. The electrochemical properties of the V2O5 nanosheets/CNTs nanocomposite were studied by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The results indicated that the V2O5 nanosheets/CNTs nanocomposite exhibits high specific capacity and good cycling stability. The initial specific capacity of the V2O5 nanosheets/CNTs nanocomposite is 130.7 mA h g(-1) for a current density up to 5.0 A g(-1) and remains at 100.1 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles.
V2CTx‐carbon nanotube/graphene nanohybrids for Li-ion storage applications

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized carbon nanohybrids of V2CTx MXene to enhance its electrochemical performance in Li-ion storage systems. The nanohybrids were hybridized with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene (Gr) with a weight ratio of MXene to carbon of 95:5. XPS analysis revealed a high oxygen termination ratio and increased π-π* bond intensity in the nanohybrids. By creating a three-dimensional structure, the nanohybrids exhibited an increase in specific surface area. The electrochemical and Li-ion storage properties of V2CTx MXene and its carbonaceous nanohybrids were investigated using electrochemical impedance and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. The hybridization improved the electrode's electrical conductivity and reduced charge transfer resistance. The V2CTx MXene demonstrated a remarkable specific discharge capacity, reaching 388.5 mAh g−1 at a current rate of 100 mA g−1 and maintaining 99.4 % Coulombic efficiency after 140 cycles. Additionally, the discharge capacities at a current rate of 100 mA g−1 for V2CTx/5CNT and V2CTx/5Gr samples were 446 and 460 mAh g−1, respectively, with Coulombic efficiencies of 98.4 % and 98.8 %. These results indicate that the hybridization with carbon nanotubes and graphene resulted in minor changes in discharge capacity compared to V2CTx MXene. This study is anchored in its unique approach to synthesizing carbonaceous nanohybrids of V2CTx MXene, delving into their improved attributes, especially for application in Li-ion storage systems.

Abstract:For the first time, V2O5/carbon nanotube (CNT) porous microspheres (VCMs) constructed from V2O5 particles homogenously wrapped in highly conductive CNTs have been synthesized through a facile spray-drying route by using commercial V2O5 and CNTs as starting materials. Compared with bare commercial V2O5 particles, the electrochemical performance of VCM is significantly enhanced: it exhibits a large specific capacity of 242.3 mAhg(-1), which is about 69% higher than that of bare commercial V2O5 (145.4 mAhg(-1)); the capacity remains 223.8 mAhg(-1) at 0.2C (1C=294 mAhg(-1)) after 80 cycles with a high capacity retention of 92.3%. The C-rate capacities at 1, 2, 5, and 10 C are 180.8, 154.1, 134.8, and 109.3 mAhg(-1), respectively; these values indicate excellent rate performance. The remarkable performance enhancement is attributed to the interconnected network of conductive CNTs, which guarantees high conductivity and enables fast electron transport between CNTs and V2O5 of the uniformly dispersed VCM. Moreover, VCM provides a hierarchical template to accommodate the structural degradation and delamination of V2O5 particles during electrochemical cycling. The proposed spray-drying strategy is facile, effective, and easy to realize on a large scale for the low-cost industrial production of V2O5/CNT composite cathodes, which can be extended to produce other high-capacity electrode materials with large volume variations and low electrical conductivities.
Uniform Coaxial CNT@Li2MnSiO4@C As Advanced Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:The rational design of the nano structure is crucial for overcoming the inherent defect and engineering high performance of Li2MnSiO4 cathode material. In the present study, uniform coaxial carbon nanotube CNT@Li2MnSiO4@C has been designed and synthesized by an efficient step-by-step strategy and applied as high-performance cathode for lithium ion battery. It is demonstrated that the product has a uniform coaxial structure, the thickness of Li2MnSiO4 shell and outermost carbon layer is about 20 nm and 4.5 nm, respectively. This properly design can effectively improve the electric conductivity, shorten the Li ion diffusion length, relax volume change upon charge/discharge and relieve the manganese dissolution. Benefit from its unique structural features, the CNT@Li2MnSiO4@C electrode material overcomes the intrinsic disadvantage of Li2MnSiO4 of poor electronic/ionic conductivity and fast capacity fading rate, and hence exhibiting promising improvement on reversible capacity and cycling properties. Abstract:We have designed a novel hybrid nanostructure by coating Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles with multi-walled carbon nanotubes to enhance the lithium storage capability of Fe 2 O 3 . The strategy to prepare Fe 2 O 3 @MWCNTs involves the synthesis of Fe nanoparticles wrapped in MWCNTs, followed by the oxidation of Fe nanoparticles under carbon dioxide. When used as the anode in a Li-ion battery, this hybrid material (70.32 wt% carbon nanotubes, 29.68 wt% Fe 2 O 3 ) showed a reversible discharge capacity of 515 mAhg −1 after 50 cycles at a density of 100 mAg −1 and the capacity based on Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles was calculated as 1147 mAhg −1 , Three factors are responsibile for the superior performance: (1) The hollow interiors of MWCNTs provide enough spaces for the accommodation of large volume expansion of inner Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles, which can improving the stability of electrode; (2) The MWCNTs increase the overall conductivity of the anode; (3) A stable solid electrolyte interface film formed on the surface of MWCNTs may reduce capacity fading.

Abstract:Searching for high-performance electrode materials with rapid charge/discharge and high cycling stability is pivotal to broaden the applications of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we report a simple nanochannel-confined synthesis technology of ultrafine Nb2O5 (<10 nm) nanoparticles encapsulated into carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hybrids for LIBs electrode materials. The three crystal forms of Nb2O5 can be respectively obtained simply by changing the temperature of thermal treatment. The ultrafine Nb2O5 nanoparticles dominated by the inner diameter of CNTs expose very high lithiation active sites. The fascinating nanostructure can also possess high structural stability with rapid electron transfer rate. Consequently, the orthorhombic Nb2O5/CNTs hybrids show a maximum specific capacity of 207 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), which can be maintained 170 mAh g(-1) after 1000 cycles. More importantly, a specific capacity of 108 mAh g(-1) can still be achieved even at 10 A g(-1), much higher than CNTs surface loaded Nb2O5 nanoparticles hybrids. Effect of Extremely Short-Sized MWCNT as Additive Material in High Surface Area Activated Carbon and Its Enhanced Electrical LIC Performance

Abstract:Extremely short-sized multi-wall carbon nanotube (CNT) and high surface area activated carbon were used to increase the electrical performance of lithium-ion capacitors (LIC). After electrodes were synthesized using extremely short-sized CNTs and high specific surface area activated carbon, their electrochemical characteristics were evaluated by XRD, SEM, TEM, cyclic voltammetry, EIS, BET, adoption isotherm, t-plot, and pore size distribution. In the process of electrode preparation using extremely short-sized CNTs and high specific surface area activated carbon, CNTs certainly caused a space-filling effect between these two materials, which had a significant effect on the evaluation of electrical characteristics. These relationships were demonstrated by the results of adsorption–desorption isotherm, pore size distribution, t-plot, and BJH plot. Particularly, in the electrochemical cyclic test, as the content of CNT increased, the current density significantly increased with the formation of a near-perfect rectangular shape. This tendency also exhibited excellent characteristics in a t-I plot, Tafel plot, and LSV plot, which clearly affected the electrochemical oxidation–reduction reaction due to the densification of filling density and space structure by adding extremely short-sized CNTs to the active material. In addition, YP80_CNT3 formed a specific resistance value in the range of 7.2 to 6.2 Ω/cm2, showing significantly reduced values compared to other samples. This research presented herein offers a promising route for the rational design of MWCNT and stable electrochemical reaction with LIC working mechanism.
