Abstract:Tendon adhesion is one of the most common complications of tendon injuries, which often results in the disruption of normal tendon sliding, decrease of joint mobility, and painful movement. Revision surgery is a common method for the clinical treatment of such adhesions. However, it often falls into a vicious cycle of adhesion, release, and re-adhesion if relying on surgery alone. To mitigate these complications, the development of antiadhesive materials as a barrier to prevent peritendinous adhesion has become one of the research hotspots. The bulk of this article will comprehensively appraise different tendon adhesion prevention materials including amnions, hydrogels, and electrospun nanofibrous membranes, ranging from the introduction of their advanced fabrication technologies, diversity of structures, and functions to their principles of inhibiting adhesion and therapeutic efficacies. In addition, the mechanisms of adhesion formation are innovatively summarized from the perspective of the tendon healing process. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of various tendon anti-adhesion materials are analyzed in detail. Finally, the challenges, limitations, and current opportunities of tendon adhesion prevention materials with an eye to the future have also been critically discussed.
