Abstract:Two novel deep-blue multi-resonant thermally activate delayed fluorescnece (MR-TADF) emitters, 1B-CzCrs and 2B-CzCrs, containing a a fused carbazole unit were synthesized. The carbazole contributed to the emergence of TADF in these small molecules. Particularly, organic light-emitting diodes with 1B-CzCrs doped in mCP host achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.8% at CIE coordinates of (0.146, 0.062).

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses the design and performance of two novel deep blue delayed fluorescence emitters, 1B-CzCrs and 2B-CzCrs. MR-TADF materials have attracted attention in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) because they can convert 100% of the excited state into photons without using rare metals. Traditional D-A type TADF materials have broad emission spectra, while MR-TADF materials have narrow emission spectra and high photoluminescence quantum yields. In this paper, the researchers synthesized 1B-CzCrs and 2B-CzCrs by introducing carbazole units. The external quantum efficiency of these two molecules in the mCP host can reach up to 12.8%, meeting the CIE coordinate requirements of high-definition displays. Compared with previous DPA-based materials, 1B-CzCrs with carbazole shows TADF properties, while 2B-CzCrs, although also TADF, has a slower kRISC rate. Experimental and theoretical calculations showed that the TADF properties of 1B-CzCrs are superior to those of 2B-CzCrs, which can be attributed to its more significant spin-orbit coupling and more symmetric molecular structure. In OLED devices, 1B-CzCrs exhibits higher efficiency than 2B-CzCrs, but both suffer from spectral broadening and reduced quantum efficiency due to molecular aggregation or intermolecular interactions with the host molecules. Nevertheless, OLED devices based on 1B-CzCrs achieved deep blue emission close to the BT.2020 standard and showed high external quantum efficiency in the mCP host. In summary, this paper aims to optimize deep blue MR-TADF emitters in OLED applications by utilizing molecular asymmetry and rigidification strategies to enhance their performance.
