Abstract:The formation of gas hydrates within pipelines can lead to safety hazards and economic losses. Present researches mainly focus on enhancing the performance of kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs), particularly regarding the synergistic impacts of improved synergists. This study investigated the nucleation and growth process of gas hydrate in the presence of KHI and each of the 20 alcohol-ether synergists, and the 'molecular chain's length effect' was proposed to summarize the synergistic effect of alcohol-ether synergists on the inhibition performance of KHI. The molecular chain's length effect refers to (i) the synergistic effect of the alcohol/ether on KHI was enhanced and then weakened with the increase of the carbon chain's length, because the hydrophobicity of the alcohol/ether increases with its carbon chain's length, which further influence the stretching of the KHI's polymer chain and contribute to the improved overall inhibition performance. (ii) For the alcohol or ether with the same the length of the carbon chain, the synergistic effect for KHI was enhanced with using binary alcohol/ethers than mono alcohol/ethers. This might be due to the stronger hydrogen bonding adsorption for binary alcohols than for mono alcohols based on the Raman spectroscopy analysis. On the other hand, Zeta potential analysis suggested that KHI and binary ethers possess better neutralization and aggregation. Furthermore, the best-compounded solution of KHI and alcohol-ether synergist exhibited significant inhibition performance on hydrate formation, since the hydrate volume fraction after 12-h hydrate formation was below 0.1 % at a subcooling degree of 15 K and maintained below 4.8 % at the ultra-high subcooling degree of 18 K, respectively. Overall results highlighted the 'molecular chain's length effect' to interpret the interactions between KHI and alcohol-ether synergists, which can provide theoretical support for the deep understanding of KHIs' inhibition mechanism, and optimization method for the KHI-synergist into real application.
