Abstract:Abstract The accurate estimation of leaf hydraulic conductance ( K leaf ) is important for revealing leaf physiology characteristics and function. However, there are some uncertain influencing factors in K leaf measurement by using evaporation flux method (EFM), a widely used method. In this study, we investigated the potential impacts of plant sampling method, measurement setup, environmental factors, recording instrument, and transpiration steady status identification on K leaf estimation. Our results indicated that the sampling and rehydration time, the small gravity pressure on leaf, and degassing treatment had limited effects on K leaf values. Transpiration rate ( E ) was significantly affected by multiple environmental factors including airflow around leaf, light intensity, and leaf temperature. K leaf values decreased by 40% from 1000 to 500 µmol m -2 s -1 light intensities and by 15.1% from 27 to 37 o C. In addition, the accurate flow rate ( F ) steady state identification and the leaf water potential measurement were important for K leaf estimation. Based on the analysis of influencing factors, we provided a format for reporting the details of the EFM-based K leaf measurement methods and metadata that future studies could interpret the results in method issue.

Abstract:There is a need for developing an accurate and simple method, which can be widely used in agro-hydrological models. The Integrated Richards Equation method is a good and simple method to simulate cyclic movement of water in the soilatmosphere system. However, this method still has some unsolved problems and it is needed for further development if used in agro-hydrological simulation. In this study, the Integrated Richards Equation method was further developed for the agro-hydrological simulation by introducing the commonly used soil hydraulic functions, top and lower boundary conditions. Infiltration numerical experiments and a lab evaporation experiment were used for the validation of the model's capabilities of modelling infiltration and evaporation, respectively. A field evaporation experiment, which was conducted from 27 April to 21 November in 1971, at Big Ground field, Wellesbourne, UK, was used for in-site validation. Soil samples from four replicate plots were taken at 5 cm increments to a depth of 45 cm at regular intervals throughout the experiment. In total, 10 measurements of soil water content down the profile for ten different times were taken during the experiment. Numerical infiltration experiments showed that the proposed method could give good predictions for two contrasting soils, loamy sand and clay loam, under unsteady intense rainfall conditions. The results were in line with those from the complex numerical scheme of FEM. Good results were also obtained in testing the method for evaporation from coarse sand, but the method under-predicted the amount of evaporation from fine sand. The results of testing against data from the field experiment show that the predicted soil water content was in good agreement with the measured values down the soil profile, but not for the soil close to the surface. This indicates that the proposed method performed well in agro-hydrological simulations on agricultural bare soils under different complex conditions at the upper boundary. Thus the method could be applied in agro-hydrological simulations.

Abstract:Leaf-level gas exchange data support the mechanistic understanding of plant fluxes of carbon and water. These fluxes inform our understanding of ecosystem function, are an important constraint on parameterization of terrestrial biosphere models, are necessary to understand the response of plants to global environmental change, and are integral to efforts to improve crop production. Collection of these data using gas analyzers can be both technically challenging and time consuming, and individual studies generally focus on a small range of species, restricted time periods, or limited geographic regions. The high value of these data is exemplified by the many publications that reuse and synthesize gas exchange data, however the lack of metadata and data reporting conventions make full and efficient use of these data difficult. Here we propose a reporting format for leaf-level gas exchange data and metadata to provide guidance to data contributors on how to store data in repositories to maximize their discoverability, facilitate their efficient reuse, and add value to individual datasets. For data users, the reporting format will better allow data repositories to optimize data search and extraction, and more readily integrate similar data into harmonized synthesis products. The reporting format specifies data table variable naming and unit conventions, as well as metadata characterizing experimental conditions and protocols. For common data types that were the focus of this initial version of the reporting format, i.e., survey measurements, dark respiration, carbon dioxide and light response curves, and parameters derived from those measurements, we took a further step of defining required additional data and metadata that would maximize the potential reuse of those data types. To aid data contributors and the development of data ingest tools by data repositories we provided a translation table comparing the outputs of common gas exchange instruments. Extensive consultation with data collectors, data users, instrument manufacturers, and data scientists was undertaken in order to ensure that the reporting format met community needs. The reporting format presented here is intended to form a foundation for future development that will incorporate additional data types and variables as gas exchange systems and measurement approaches advance in the future. The reporting format is published in the U.S. Department of Energy?s ESS-DIVE data repository, with documentation and future development efforts being maintained in a version control system.
Water Flux Characterization Through Hydraulic Head and Temperature Data Assimilation: Numerical Modeling and Sandbox Experiments

Abstract:Spatial distribution of groundwater recharge/discharge fluxes has an important impact on mass and energy exchanges in shallow streambeds. During the last two decades, extensive studies have been devoted to the quantification of one-dimensional (1-D) vertical exchange fluxes. Nevertheless, few studies were conducted to characterize two-dimensional (2-D) heterogeneous flux fields that commonly exist in real-world cases. In this study, we used an iterative ensemble smoother (IES) to quantify the spatial distribution of 2-D exchange fluxes by assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements. Four assimilation scenarios corresponding to different potential field applications were tested. In the first three scenarios, the heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity fields were first inferred from hydraulic head and/or temperature measurements, and then the flux fields were derived through Darcy's law using the estimated conductivity fields. In the fourth scenario, the flux fields were estimated directly from the temperature measurements, which is more efficient and especially suitable for the situation that a complete knowledge of flow boundary conditions is unavailable. We concluded that, the best estimation could be achieved through jointly assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements, and temperature data were superior to the head data when they were used independently. Overall, the IES method provided more robust and accurate vertical flux estimations than those given by the widely used analytical solution-based methods. Furthermore, IES gave reasonable uncertainty estimations, which were unavailable in traditional methods. Since temperature can be accurately monitored with high spatial and temporal resolutions, the coupling of heat tracing techniques and IES provides promising potential in quantifying complex exchange fluxes under field conditions. Quality control and flux gap filling strategy for Bowen ratio method: revisiting the Priestley–Taylor evaporation model

Abstract:Micrometeorological measurements were made over an irrigated rice paddy during the Huaihe River Basin Experiment (HUBEX) in 1999. This study addresses the quality control and gap filling strategy for the heat fluxes with the Bowen ratio energy balance (BREB) method. It also endeavors to benefit future studies through comparing five methodologies to estimate the net water exchange. First, a three-step quality control strategy is constructed. Its first two steps guarantee the correct flux directions and reject suspicious data, respectively. The third step forbids supersaturation by considering the Bowen ratio ranges for different flux combinations (termed as “scenarios”). The quality-controlled latent heat ( LE ) and sensible heat ( H ) fluxes fall in three scenarios, namely I ( LE > 0, H > 0), II ( LE > 0, H < 0), and IV ( LE < 0, H < 0). Second, the Priestley–Taylor evaporation model (PTEM) is applied to fill the gaps of LE , while the energy balance relationship is used to gap-fill H , namely H = R N − G − LE ( R N : net radiation; G : soil heat flux). Central to the success of this strategy is the idea to calibrate the Priestley–Taylor parameter (α) in a scenario-specific manner. On average, α values are calibrated as 1.20 and 1.35 for scenario I and II, respectively. For scenario IV, most α values lie in a narrow range, namely from 0.9 to 1.0. Then, α is calibrated as 0.97 to extend the applicability of the PTEM to condensation (negative LE ). The scenario-specific treatment explicitly explains the diurnal variation of α derived without distinguishing the scenarios. Third, five methodologies are compared in the calculation of net water exchange, including PTEM-gap-filled BREB method (M1), energy-balance-based eddy covariance method (M2), and three simplified models to estimate LE , respectively as R N − H , R N − G , and R N . A major finding is that G and H have a similar effect of about 3% in the net water exchange. Thus, if either is neglected, the net evaporation should be slightly lowered to avoid overestimate, by 3% as a rule of thumb from this work.

Abstract:We apply and compare three widely applicable methods for estimating ecosystem transpiration (T) from eddy covariance (EC) data across 251 FLUXNET sites globally. All three methods are based on the coupled water and carbon relationship, but they differ in assumptions and parameterizations. Intercomparison of the three daily T estimates shows high correlation among methods (R between .89 and .94), but a spread in magnitudes of T/ET (evapotranspiration) from 45% to 77%. When compared at six sites with concurrent EC and sap flow measurements, all three EC-based T estimates show higher correlation to sap flow-based T than EC-based ET. The partitioning methods show expected tendencies of T/ET increasing with dryness (vapor pressure deficit and days since rain) and with leaf area index (LAI). Analysis of 140 sites with high-quality estimates for at least two continuous years shows that T/ET variability was 1.6 times higher across sites than across years. Spatial variability of T/ET was primarily driven by vegetation and soil characteristics (e.g., crop or grass designation, minimum annual LAI, soil coarse fragment volume) rather than climatic variables such as mean/standard deviation of temperature or precipitation. Overall, T and T/ET patterns are plausible and qualitatively consistent among the different water flux partitioning methods implying a significant advance made for estimating and understanding T globally, while the magnitudes remain uncertain. Our results represent the first extensive EC data-based estimates of ecosystem T permitting a data-driven perspective on the role of plants' water use for global water and carbon cycling in a changing climate.

Abstract:Abstract While yearly budgets of CO 2 flux ( F c ) and evapotranspiration ( ET ) above vegetation can be readily obtained from eddy‐covariance measurements, the separate quantification of their soil (respiration and evaporation) and canopy (photosynthesis and transpiration) components remains an elusive yet critical research objective. In this work, we investigate four methods to partition observed total fluxes into soil and plant sources: two new and two existing approaches that are based solely on analysis of conventional high frequency eddy‐covariance (EC) data. The physical validity of the assumptions of all four methods, as well as their performance under different scenarios, are tested with the aid of large‐eddy simulations, which are used to replicate eddy‐covariance field experiments. Our results indicate that canopies with large, exposed soil patches increase the mixing and correlation of scalars; this negatively impacts the performance of the partitioning methods, all of which require some degree of uncorrelatedness between CO 2 and water vapor. In addition, best performances for all partitioning methods were found when all four flux components are non‐negligible, and measurements are collected close to the canopy top. Methods relying on the water‐use efficiency ( W ) perform better when W is known a priori, but are shown to be very sensitive to uncertainties in this input variable especially when canopy fluxes dominate. We conclude by showing how the correlation coefficient between CO 2 and water vapor can be used to infer the reliability of different W parameterizations.

Impacts of Soil Heat Flux Calculation Methods on the Surface Energy Balance Closure

Abstract:Quantifying uncertainty in determining the surface soil heat fluxes (G(0)) to close the surface energy balance in micrometeorological studies remains an open question. While numerous methods have been proposed to determine G(0) and have been validated individually, few studies have cross-evaluated these methods to examine how the derived G(0) from different methods affects the closure of the surface energy balance. Using data measured at an arid shrub-land site during summertime, nine different methods were evaluated ranging from conventional heat-storage calorimetry to methods derived directly from the heat transfer equation. Apart from the entire dataset, two subsets were used; one with minimal variation from idealized diurnal radiation cycles and the other with highly variable radiation conditions. Under the entire dataset, the performance of the methods varied while there was a distinct drop-off in the level of closure under the variable radiation conditions. The methods that allowed for the most variation in inputs between time steps performed better than those that used diurnal or constant input values. Because of this, a calorimetry method and Green's function-based method are more highly recommended than other methods. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Assumptions about component temperature difference between soil and foliage at limited,ample and transition soil moisture conditions are proposed.And they are employed in calculating surface evapotranspiration from single-viewing-angle radiative surface temperature and two-layer model.The in-situ data collected during QRSLSP experiment at Shunyi,Beijing,2001 are used to validate this method.The estimated sensible and latent heat fluxes agree well with the field turbulent observations,and the errors are much smaller than that estimated by other 4 published methods.This method can also be used in monitoring soil surface and root layer drought,provided the separation of transpiration and evaporation is good enough.

Abstract:Fluxes of CO2 (FCO2) and energy (latent heat, LE; sensible heat, H) exchange between ecosystems and atmosphere, as measured by the eddy covariance technique, represent a fundamental data source for global-change research. However, little is known about the uncertainties of flux measurements at an ecosystem level in China. Here, we use data from six eddy covariance tower sites in ChinaFLUX, including two forested sites, three grassland sites, and one agricultural site, to conduct a cross-site analysis of random flux errors (RFEs) of FCO2, LE, and H. By using the daily-differencing approach, paired observations are obtained to characterize the random error in these measurements. Our results show that: (1) The RFEs of FCO2, LE, and H in different ecosystems of ChinaFLUX closely follow a double-exponential (Laplace) distribution, presumably due to a superposition of Gaussian distribution for high flux magnitude. (2) The RFEs of FCO2, LE, and H are not homogeneous and appear to be a linear function of flux magnitude. (3) Except for H, the RFEs of FCO2 and LE exhibit a distinct seasonal pattern. For FCO2, the dependence of RFEs on wind speed varies somewhat according to vegetation type, whereas for LE and H, there is no such dependence. The effect of temperature on RFEs is not statistically significant (P<0.05). Both the distribution and the relationship of RFEs with flux magnitude in ChinaFLUX are essentially in accord with those in AmeriFlux and CarboEurope.
Partitioning Evapotranspiration by Measuring Soil Water Evaporation with Heat-Pulse Sensors and Plant Transpiration with Sap Flow Gauges

Abstract:Understanding the contributions of soil water evaporation (E) and crop transpiration (T) to evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for irrigation management and improving crop water use efficiency. Current methods for partitioning ET are subject to uncertainties, due in part to the scale differences in determining E, T, and ET. In this study, ET of a lysimeter planted with maize (Zea mays L.) was partitioned into E and T using sensors that had compatible measurement scales: E was measured with heat pulse sensors (following the sensible heat balance (SHB) and modified sensible heat balance (MSHB) approaches), and T was measured with sap flow gauges (following the heat-balance sap-flow (HBSF) method). The accuracy of the measurements was evaluated by comparing the sum of E and T values (E + T) to weighing lysimeter ET data. During the study period, E, T, and ET had average values of 0.9, 4.0, and 4.8 mm d-1, respectively, and the fractions of E and T were 19% and 81% of E + T, respectively. In general, the E + T values agreed well with the lysimeter ET data, but slight overestimations and underestimations were observed at relatively small and relatively large ET rates, respectively. By combining the SHB and MSHB approaches and the HBSF method, it is possible to partition ET into E and T with satisfactory accuracy.
Assessing Global Transpiration Estimates: Insights from Tree-Scale Sap Flow Analysis

Abstract:Ecosystem transpiration estimation presents significant uncertainties, prompting the need for direct assessment through sap flow measurements to validate T products and their associated modeling mechanisms. Additionally, the scarcity of global site data urges us to seek reliable error assessment and integration methods that do not rely on observations. This pioneering study conducts a comprehensive global-scale analysis, evaluating uncertainties in four prominent products using SAPFLUXNET data and delving into multi-source data assessment and fusion using collocation analysis. Results highlight GLEAM’s superior performance across diverse vegetation types, closely trailed by weighted average and PMLv2, with ERA5L displaying the poorest performance. While discrepancies exist among product performances, their estimations across low, median, and high percentiles demonstrate moderate differences. Further sensitivity analysis underscores the critical role of accurately representing vegetation responses to VPD, root-zone soil moisture, and radiation for improved transpiration estimates. Additionally, collocation analysis emerges as a reliable tool for error analysis, with collocation-based fusion results effectively reducing input errors and demonstrating the best estimation of multi-year mean and trend. This study strongly advocates for heightened precision in these products and continual assessments to refine ecological models.
Soil hydrology and crop evapotranspiration modeling in a dry agricultural region of the Tibet Plateau

Abstract:Vapor flow plays major role in soil&#8211;atmosphere water exchange in arid regions, and can be partly driven by airflow, but its impact is often neglected. In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted in a dry agricultural region on the Tibet Plateau (TP) to investigate the effect of airflow on soil hydro&#8211;thermal dynamics and evapotranspiration modeling under three cultivation patterns: ridge-furrow planting with black-film mulching (RM), flat planting with black-film mulching (FM), and flat planting with no mulching (FN). An airflow-incorporated, based on Philip and de Vries (PdV) model, STEMMUS (Simultaneous Transfer of Energy, Mass and Momentum in Unsaturated Soil) was adopted. Considering objective&#8217;s (Lycium barbarum L.) sparse canopy, excluding Penman-Monteith (P-M) algorithm which already employed in STEMMUS, Shuttleworth-Wallace (S-W) model was incorporated into STEMMUS model to simulate evapotranspiration rate. Validation results showed that STEMMUS reliably captured the behaviors of observed soil moisture, soil temperature, and evapotranspiration (index of agreement d = 0.4, 0.6 and 0.5 for soil moisture under FN, FM and RM; 0.9 for soil temperature under three treatments; 0.6, 0.6 and 0.8 for evapotranspiration under FN, FM and RM; 0.6, 0.5 and 0.5 for evaporation under FN, FM and RM). Incorporating airflow extended the 0-1 m soil profile temperature modeling precision (d value improved 1%), led to the maximum 5% gap of soil moisture at 20 cm depth, and 3.7 mm d-1 gap of daily evapotranspiration compared to pattern without airflow under non-mulched treatment. However, the impacts of airflow are weak under mulching treatments (the gaps between including/excluding airflow modeling were within 0.1% for soil moisture, 0.1 &#8451; for soil temperature and 0.1 mm d-1 for evapotranspiration). Furthermore, the effect of coupling airflow became significant when water inputs (precipitation/irrigation) were higher than 18 mm. Incorporating S-W model successfully improved evapotranspiration modeling precision, with d values increased by 0.5% and 1% for FM and FN respectively in evapotranspiration simulation, increased by 0.5%, 6.4% and 2.2% for RM, FM and FN respectively in evaporation simulation. The results here provide insights into the role of airflow in soil hydrology modeling in arid and semi-arid regions.
A simple and objective method to partition evapotranspiration into transpiration and evaporation at eddy-covariance sites

Abstract:Separating evapotranspiration (ET) into evaporation (E) and transpiration (T) is challenging but key for a better understanding and prediction of the hydrological cycle and plant water use. In this study, flux data at 30 routine eddy-covariance sites were used to develop a new and simple method for ET partitioning based on the separation of soil and canopy conductances, with the main assumption that the latter is proportional to gross primary productivity (GPP). The result of T:ET across different plant functional types (PFTs) was consistent with recent modeling or empirical results. The mean annual T:ET was highest for evergreen needleleaf forests (0.75 ± 0.17), followed by croplands (0.62 ± 0.16) and grasslands (0.56 ± 0.15). The leaf area index (LAI) was shown to explain only small (20%) variations of mean annual T:ET across sites. However, at each site, the correlation of T:ET with LAI was strong at the seasonal scale, where T:ET increased nonlinearly with LAI. The results did not show significant relationship of T:ET with long-term mean precipitation across sites at multiyear timescales. However, the partitioned soil evaporation after each precipitation pulse is consistent with three-stage soil evaporation theory. This ET partitioning method is an objective assessment as it is mainly data-driven. The procedure to apply this method is also simple so it can be readily applied to global flux tower networks at different temporal and spatial scales, enabling continuous estimation of T:ET to monitor ecosystem dynamics and hydrological responses to environmental change. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
Quantifying Plant Transpiration and Canopy Conductance Using Eddy Flux Data: an Underlying Water Use Efficiency Method

Abstract:Canopy conductance (G(c)) largely regulates carbon/water cycling and land-atmosphere interactions, but quantifying G(c) using eddy flux data is limited by the difficulty of partitioning plant transpiration (T) and surface evaporation (E). We introduced an underlying water use efficiency (uWUE) method to partition evapotranspiration (ET) in an oasis maize ecosystem, and cross-compared with the Shuttleworth and Wallace (SW) model, the lysimeter and isotope measurements. We then estimated surface conductance (G(s)) by ET and G(c) by T partitioned using the uWUE method, followed by a performance evaluation on the Jarvis model parameterized with both G(s) and G(c). The results showed that T/ET estimated by the uWUE method was close to the isotope method in the peak growing season of 2012, it showed similar seasonal variations with the lysimeter/eddy covariance method and the SW model throughout this growing season. Daily T partitioned by the uWUE method was in good agreement with the SW model from 2012 to 2015 (r(2) = 0.91). Additionally, G(c) had more significant seasonal variations than G(s). The Jarvis model parameterized with G(c) exhibited superior performance than those with G(s). Our study suggests that the uWUE method can exclude influences of nonstomatal conductances, and will have great potential to provide more reasonable parameterization for simulation of plant stomata.
An Algorithm Differentiating Sunlit and Shaded Leaves for Improving Canopy Conductance and Vapotranspiration Estimates

Abstract:Surface conductance (G(s)) is a key parameter in estimating land surface evapotranspiration (ET) and difficult to determine. Here we proposed an approach for determining G(s) according to the stomatal conductance of sunlit and shaded leaves that is estimated from their respective gross primary production (GPP) with the Ball-Berry model. Central to this approach, GPP is separately simulated for sunlit and shaded leaves with a revised two-leaf light use efficiency model. We tested the approach at 17 FLUXNET sites with seven different vegetation types. The revised two-leaf light use efficiency model outperforms its predecessor in estimating GPP at most sites. As to G(s) estimation, although our proposed algorithm has higher Akaike information criterion values than has the model estimating G(s) using vegetation indices, it was able to capture G(s) variations at all sites, while models estimating G(s) using leaf area index and vegetation indices performed poor at some sites. The proposed algorithm also improves ET estimation, indicated by lower Akaike information criterion, higher determination coefficient (R-2), and lower root mean square error of simulated daily ET for both calibration and validation data sets. This study demonstrates the usefulness of differentiating sunlit and shaded leaves in improving canopy conductance and ET estimates.
Uncertainty analysis of modeled carbon and water fluxes in a subtropical coniferous plantation

Abstract:Estimating the exchanges of carbon and water between vegetation and the atmosphere requires process-based ecosystem models; however, uncertainty in model predictions is inevitable due to the uncertainties in model structure, model parameters, and driving variables. This paper proposes a methodological framework for analyzing prediction uncertainty of ecosystem models caused by parameters and applies it in Qianyanzhou subtropical coniferous plantation using the Simplified Photosynthesis and Evapotranspiration model. We selected 20 key parameters from 42 parameters of the model using one-at-a-time sensitivity analysis method and estimated their posterior distributions using Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique. Prediction uncertainty was quantified through Monte Carlo method and partitioned using Sobol' method by decomposing the total variance of model predictions into different components. The uncertainty in predicted net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (RE), evapotranspiration (ET), and transpiration (T), defined as the coefficient of variation, was 61.0%, 20.6%, 12.7%, 14.2%, and 19.9%, respectively. Modeled carbon and water fluxes were highly sensitive to two parameters, maximum net CO2 assimilation rate (A(max)) and specific leaf weight (SLWC). They contributed more than two thirds of the uncertainty in predicted NEE, GPP, ET, and T and almost one third of the uncertainty in predicted RE, which should be focused on in further efforts to reduce uncertainty. The results indicated a direction for future model development and data collection. Although there were still limitations in the framework illustrated here, it did provide a paradigm for systematic quantification of ecosystem model prediction uncertainty.

Abstract:Understanding energy and water flux cycling and quantifying their components are essential steps to elucidate the hydrological process and sustainable water resources management in agricultural ecosystems. The challenge of partitioning energy and evapotranspiration (ET) components (canopy transpiration Tc and surface evaporation Es) was addressed by the combination of eddy covariance (EC) technique, micro-lysimeters, and sap flow methods in a humid region kiwifruit orchard of Southwest China. The variations of energy and water flux and their controls were assessed, then the measured ET and its component were compared with the simulated values by Priestley-Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory model (PT-JPL), Shuttleworth-Wallace (S-W), and FAO-56 dual crop coefficient models (Dual-FAO). The results showed that latent heat flux (LE) dominated the consumption of net radiation energy (Rn), with the averaged ratio (EF = LE/Rn) above 0.70 during the growing seasons. More radiation energy is released in the form of LE with increased surface moisture and vegetation cover (total leaf area index, LAIt). T-c accounted for 41%-46% ET. The increase of canopy leaf area index (LAIc) strongly affected ET partitioning through the early growing seasons, while atmospheric evaporation demand dominated the T-c/ET and even caused the energy to be redistributed since high atmospheric evaporation demand caused a decrease of T-c while an increase of Es during the active growing seasons (LAIc > 2.5 m(2) m(-2)). All the ET models performed well in estimating ET (R-2 = 0.84-0.92) and its components (T-c, R-2 = 0.70-0.74; Es, R-2 = 0.63-0.69), allowing individual estimation of water interception by the canopy is one of the merits of the PT-JPL model for ET simulation in this humid site, with R(2 )of 0.92, RMSE of 0.55 mm d(-1), while the S-W model performed slightly better in ET component simulations (T-c, R-2 = 0.74, RMSE = 0.35 mm d(-1); Es, R-2 = 0.69, RMSE = 0.38 mm d(-1)). The results of our study may have much referential significance for eco-hydrological process analysis and water flux estimation in regions with similar environmental conditions.
Improving the evapotranspiration estimation by considering the effect of flux footprint climatology

Abstract:Eddy covariance (EC) is a common approach for observing evapotranspiration (ET). In the EC system, there is a varying flux footprint climatology which causes a spatial mismatch between the forcing data from the ET model and EC observations, generating extra errors in estimating ET. This study endeavored to reduce the error caused by the spatial scale inconsistency between forcing data and ET measurements employing joint observations from EC system, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and satellites under the flux footprint theory and the Penman-Monteith (P-M) model. The joint observations were performed in 2020 at the LuanCheng (LES) and YuCheng (YES) sites. Surface conductance for the varying flux footprint climatology was retrieved from EC observations using the inverted P-M model. The vegetation indices from various remote sensing platforms, including UAV, MODIS, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2, were retrieved and employed to evaluate surface conductance and ET within the flux footprint climatology. The findings indicated that varying flux footprint climatology had a significant impact on the accuracy of ET estimation. The UAV, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2 data all generated good ET estimations (LES: R 2 > 0.72, RMSE < 0.81 mm day −1 ; YES: R 2 > 0.74, RMSE < 0.91 mm day −1 ) in the 80 % and 90 % flux footprint climatology. In contrast, MODIS, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2 obtained worse ET performance at LES ( R 2 < 0.65, RMSE > 0.88 mm day −1 ) and YES ( R 2 < 0.67, RMSE > 0.90 mm day −1 ) when flux footprint climatology was disregarded. Among the four remote sensing platforms, UAV remote sensing images integrated with the flux footprint model significantly enhanced the accuracy of ET estimation (LES: R 2 = 0.83, RMSE = 0.66 mm day −1 ; YES: R 2 = 0.84, RMSE = 0.55 mm day −1 ). This study demonstrated that considering flux footprint climatology can acquire accurate ET estimates.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration (ET) is arguably the most uncertain ecohydrologic variable for quantifying watershed water budgets. Although numerous ET and hydrological models exist, accurately predicting the effects of global change on water use and availability remains challenging because of model deficiency and/or a lack of input parameters. The objective of this study was to create a new set of monthly ET models that can better quantify landscape‐level ET with readily available meteorological and biophysical information. We integrated eddy covariance flux measurements from over 200 sites, multiple year remote sensing products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and statistical modelling. Through examining the key biophysical controls on ET by land cover type (i.e. shrubland, cropland, deciduous forest, evergreen forest, mixed forest, grassland, and savannas), we created unique ET regression models for each land cover type using different combinations of biophysical independent factors. Leaf area index and net radiation explained most of the variability of observed ET for shrubland, cropland, grassland, savannas, and evergreen forest ecosystems. In contrast, potential ET (PET) as estimated by the temperature‐based Hamon method was most useful for estimating monthly ET for deciduous and mixed forests. The more data‐demanding PET method, FAO reference ET model, had similar power as the simpler Hamon PET method for estimating actual ET. We developed three sets of monthly ET models by land cover type for different practical applications with different data availability. Our models may be used to improve water balance estimates for large basins or regions with mixed land cover types. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
