Abstract:In supply chain management, decision makers' behavioral problem may result in the chain's poor performance. In this paper, we investigate a supply chain consisting of one risk-neutral supplier and one reference-dependent and loss-averse retailer who faces a newsvendor problem with price-dependent demand, and provide the conditions in which revenue sharing contracts can coordinate the supply chain under expected profit criterion. We also propose an extended supply chain coordination definition, which considers the impact of agents' behavioral preferences on supply chain performance and allows the existence of agents with incomparable utilities. Furthermore, it generalizes the one in risk-neutral settings. Finally, we prove that the revenue sharing contracts can accomplish coordination of a newsvendor within the new framework

Abstract:A dynamic pricing model is studied where a seller of an asset faces a sequence of potential buyers whose valuation distribution is unknown to the seller. The seller learns more about the distribution in the selling process and becomes less optimistic as the object remains unsold. We characterize the optimal posted prices which incorporate updated beliefs every period, and derive a rather tight sufficient condition under which these prices decline over time. An example is provided where the optimal prices can actually increase over time if the condition is violated.

Abstract:Markdown selling (i.e., price reductions over the course of the selling season) is a strategy to implement price discrimination and to manage market uncertainty that has been widely adopted by retailers. This paper explores the potential advantage of introducing an additional tool to the arsenal of retailers, probabilistic selling (i.e., offering consumers a choice to buy a product that can turn out to be any item from a predetermined set of distinct items). We show that both probabilistic and markdown selling strategies serve as price discrimination tools by offering buyers an option to purchase a “damaged” good (an uncertain product under the former and delayed consumption of a product under the latter). However, the two strategies segment markets based on different types of buyer heterogeneity: buyer preference strength under probabilistic selling and buyer patience under markdown selling. Our analytical model reveals that, compared with markdown selling, probabilistic selling can (1) improve margin management by increasing revenue from full-price sales and reducing the magnitude of discounts; and (2) improve inventory utilization by reducing stockouts and the amount of excess inventory. We identify the conditions required for probabilistic selling to be more profitable than markdown selling.

Abstract:The optimal wholesale contract design problem is modeled in a dual-channel supply chain under information asymmetry. We consider the games with asymmetric cost information and full information respectively, derive the corresponding equilibrium strategies and profits, and conduct detailed comparisons and analyses. We investigate the impact of asymmetric cost information on the equilibrium strategies and profits of partners in the supply chain and analyze the values of the cost information from the perspectives of the partners and the whole system respectively.

Abstract:We study a two-level supply chain consisting of two competing suppliers and one buyer. Both suppliers experience some level of uncertainty on product quality, which, in turn, leads to additional cost on the buyer's side. We evaluate the benefits of sharing information on suppliers' product quality with the buyer. Specifically, if a supplier shares its quality inspection result of sampled products on an order basis, how should the buyer use this information to reduce quality uncertainty in the products he received? Will quality information sharing benefit the supplier(s) as well? We develop an analytical model to investigate each member's performance with/without quality information sharing. We also develop equilibrium strategies for the suppliers with quality information sharing. Our results show that the buyer always benefits from quality information sharing. From the supplier's perspective, sharing quality information with the buyer impacts its market share. Moreover, whether to share its quality information depends on the supplier's product quality level and price level.

Abstract:We characterize the equilibrium behavior in a broad class of competition models in which the competing firms' market shares are given by an attraction model, and the aggregate sales in the industry depend on the aggregate attraction value according to a general function. Each firm's revenues and costs are proportional with its expected sales volume, with a cost rate that depends on the firm's chosen attraction value according to an arbitrary increasing function. Whereas most existing competition papers with attraction models can be viewed as special cases of this general model, we apply our general results to a new set of quality competition models. Here an industry has N suppliers of a given product, who compete for the business of one or more buyers. Each of the suppliers encounters an uncertain yield factor, with a given general yield distribution. The buyers face uncertain demands over the course of a given sales season. The suppliers compete by selecting key characteristics of their yield distributions, either their means, their standard deviations, or both. These choices have implications for their per-unit cost rates.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine firms' quality and inventory decisions with consumers who behave heterogeneously not only on the product' s valuation ( horizontal) but also on the reference price setting ( vertical) . Through a three-stage Stackelberg leader-follower model, we derive cost-effective solutions for channel members in two distribution scenarios. Counter-intuitively, the analytical result illustrates that profit-maximizing inventory and quality decisions can be higher when the uncertainty of the market increases because the two-dimensional impacts of market uncertainty on demand are diametrically opposite to each other. Specifically, the vertical uncertainty ( difference in reference effects ) has a buffering effect on the aggregate market demand, which is further amplified by loss-aversion behaviors. However, the horizontal uncertainty ( heterogeneity of consumer valuation) has a promoting effect on the market demand and induces firms to order more. The numerical result further shows that market demand may not inherit the behavioral bias of individual consumers, leading to an inconsistent relationship between the sensitivity of market demand to gain/loss and consumers ' loss-aversion behaviors. Our findings have implications not only for understanding the stochastic market demand with behaviorally biased consumers but also for determining the channel members' optimal inventory and quality decisions.

Abstract:This paper develops a model of two-stage dynamic pricing with heterogeneous consumers.Consumers are heterogeneous along two dimensions.First,customers may either be strategic or myopic.Second,customers' valuation is stochastic distributed.We use bottom price to describe customers' characteristics responding to the seller's pricing strategy and obtain the seller's optimal pricing paths by solving a two-stage dynamic programming problem.The numerical example shows that the markdown degree,the expected purchasing amounts of customers and the expected profits of the seller are decreasing with the increase of the proportion of strategic customers.This paper also analyzes the decision results where the proportion of strategic customers equals zero or one.

Abstract:SAGE Open, Volume 13, Issue 2, April-June 2023. We extend the mental accounting perspective to build models on product quality matching strategy, which is effective in resolving the conflict between traditional and online channels. We consider that perceived values of high-quality and low-quality products belong to different mental accounts, and construct three product quality matching strategies for a dual-channel supply chain. Comparing the profit of each member, we find that (1) the strategy where the traditional channel distributes premium products, while the e-tailer sells low-quality products, is most conducive to the manufacturer; (2) the profit elasticity of the e-tailer is larger than that of the traditional retailer; (3) traditional retailers should sell more price elastic products, and e-tailers should sell the product with lower price elasticity; and (4) the manufacturer has more monopoly power if consumers have a higher degree of acceptance for the online channel that distributes premium products.

Abstract:In this article, we consider an online retailer who sells two similar products (A and B) over a finite selling period. Any stock left at the end of the period has no value (like clothes going out of fashion at the end of a season). Aside from selling the products at regular prices, he may offer an additional option that sells a probabilistic good, A or B, at a discounted price. Whenever a customer buys a probabilistic good, he needs to assign one of the products for the fulfillment. Considering the choice behavior of potential customers, we model the problem using continuous-time, discrete-state, finite-horizon dynamic programming. We study the optimal admission decisions and devise two scenarios, whose value functions can be used as benchmarks to evaluate the demand induction effect and demand dilution effect of probabilistic selling (PS). We further investigate an extension of the base MDP (Markov Decision Process) model in which the fulfillment of probabilistic sales is uncontrollable by the retailer. A special case of the extended model can be used as a benchmark to quantify the potential inventory pooling effect of PS. Abstract:Quality improvement and price-matching are two commonly used competing strategies by the retailers. However, it is still unclear how the retailers should deliberate over the two strategies when selling in both online and offline markets. In this paper, we consider two dual-channel retailers selling a substitutable product to consumers in both online and offline markets. Especially, the retailers compete in the online market, and their offline markets are exclusive to themselves. We establish a game-theoretical model to investigate the trade-off between quality improvement and price-matching in competition, and the impact on retailers' profits and consumer surplus in the dual-channel market structure. The analysis shows that, first, a retailer should choose to improve its quality to avoid price competition when the online market is small; second, when retailers engage in price competition, the retailer with larger offline market is more willing to adopt price-matching, while the retailer with a small share of offline market can be hurt; third, quality improvement can always increase the consumer surplus, while price-matching always hurts consumer surplus due to price collusion.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the seller’s selling strategies in a supply chain consisting of one supplier and multiple retailers, who compete in the same consumer market. The production lead time is relatively long compared to the selling season. Therefore, the supplier can choose to sell the products either before production begins (i.e., advance sale) or after production finishes (i.e. regular sale). Different to existing literature, we analyze the selling strategies in a more realistic environment where each buyer has a private demand signal about the consumer market at the beginning of the selling season. Three different scenarios (i.e., the monopoly retailer, the competing retailers with information sharing, and the competing retailers without information sharing) are analyzed to study the effect of competition and information asymmetry on the supplier’s selling strategy. In each scenario, we establish the equilibrium result and investigate how the competition and information asymmetry affect the supply chain and its each party’s profits with the underlying reason explained. Our main findings include: (1) the supplier is optimal to adopt regular sale when the retailers form as a monopoly retailer, or when the retailers competing with each other with demand information sharing; (2) he prefers advance sale when facing competing retailers with private information; (3) competition and private information also influence the retailers’ and the supply chain’s preferences on the supplier’s sale strategies. Moreover, when the retailers have private information under competition, we find interestingly that (1) the supplier’s profit is increasing in the information precision under advance sale, while it is not affected by information precision under regular sale; and (2) the retailers’ profits may decrease in the information precision under regular sale.
Designing and Optimizing Quality-Contingent Pricing Mechanism of B2C e-Commerce

Abstract:This paper demonstrates that quality-contingent pricing is a useful mechanism for mitigating the negative effects of quality uncertainty in e-commerce. Under contingency pricing of an information good or service, the firm pre-announces a rebate for poor performance. Consumers determine performance probabilities using publicly available historical performance data. Examining the monopoly case, we explicate the critical role of private information and differences in belief between the firm and market in the choice of pricing scheme. Contingent pricing is useful when the market underestimates the firms performance; then it is optimal for the firm to offer a full-price rebate for mis-performance, with a correspondingly higher price for meeting the performance standard. Contingency pricing is a dominant strategy for a firm when the market underestimates the firms' performance.
Online Pricing with Limited Supply and Time-Sensitive Valuations

Abstract:Many efforts have been devoted to online pricing mechanism design for different settings. In this work, we consider a common but challenging setting where the buyers have private time-sensitive valuations and the seller has limited supply. The seller offers a take-it-or-leave-it posted price for each arriving buyer and aims to maximize the expected total revenue. The unknown distribution of time-sensitive valuations and limited supply significantly increase the difficulty of searching the optimal dynamic posted prices. Given B identical items to sell, when the time-dependent valuations can be estimated with a factor of α, we prove Ω(log(1/α)) lower bound with respect to the optimal fixed distribution over prices and design an algorithm achieving tight O(log(1/α)) competitive ratio. When the seller has no information about the future trends of buyers’ valuations, we prove Ω(log B) lower bound and show that there is an algorithm with tight O(log B) competitive ratio by modeling the problem as adversarial bandits with knapsacks optimization. Extensive simulation studies show that our algorithm outperforms previous mechanisms in various settings.

Abstract:Many manufacturers have adopted differentiated distribution channels to market vertically differentiated products. However, there is scant literature addressing the quality differentiation in the presence of differentiated channel policies. We, therefore, examine whether (how) differentiated channel policies affect manufacturers' quality differentiation and all parties' performance. Specifically, we consider a manufacturer who produces high- and low products together, but with two marketing options: (1) distributing both products through one retailer (Model O), or (2) providing high quality products through one channel but low-tier products through another (Model T). Our results show that the manufacturer is more likely to decrease the level of quality differentiation in Model T than in Model O. Moreover, we show that "quality distortion" is not limited to low-tier products but can occur with high-tier products. We also comment on how the additional horizontal consumer heterogeneity affects our results and the implications of the competition at the manufacturer level.

Abstract:Few papers have studied the optimal pricing and ordering with partial lost sales from a two-stage game theoretic perspective. This paper considers a supply chain game with a buyer and a seller through pricing and ordering models with partial lost sales. We evaluate the optimal solutions for the buyer and the seller and provide insights into both the deterministic and stochastic demand models. We also propose search algorithms to obtain the global optimum when convexity and concavity conditions are not satisfied.

Abstract:We study sales quantity competition among multiple sellers, through a combination of laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. We conduct laboratory experiments with a 2×2 design from two dimensions: the procurement cost and the number of sellers. The experimental data eloquently exhibit bell-shaped distributions over all alternatives, with peak values consistently larger than the classical Nash equilibrium predictions. We propose a behavioral model which incorporates the behavioral elements of bounded rationality and social comparison, as well as time trends (the learning process). We derive several useful equilibrium properties of the model. The structural estimations show that the proposed behavioral model can effectively explain the experimental data.

Abstract:This study uses a game-theory-based analytical model to examine the consequences of two markup pricing schemes, fixed-dollar markup and percentage markup, in a supply chain-to-chain competition setting with power imbalance between dominant retailers. Our results show that the equilibrium pricing strategy depends on the level of supply chain-to-chain competition. Specifically, if the level of supply chain competition is not sufficiently high, the equilibrium pricing strategy for the two retailers will be the one in which both retailers choose to adopt the percentage markup pricing policy, i.e., the [PP] strategy. Unfortunately, this equilibrium will lead the retailers into the prisoner's dilemma in some common situations. However, if the level of competition is extremely high, the equilibrium pricing strategy will be that where the leader (Retailer 1) chooses the percentage markup pricing policy and the follower (Retailer 2) selects the fixed-dollar markup pricing policy, i.e., the [PF] strategy. This equilibrium pricing strategy always hurts Manufacturer 1, but might benefit Manufacturer 2 when the level of competition exceeds a certain threshold. From the perspective of the end-consumers, they prefer the level of competition to be kept below a certain threshold such that the [PP] strategy becomes the equilibrium pricing strategy because this equilibrium leads to the lowest retail prices. Furthermore, our results show that Retailer 1 suffers a first-mover disadvantage even under a linear demand curve, and this situation cannot be alleviated by abandoning its price-leader position to share power equally with Retailer 2.
Online Competitive Posted-Pricing Mechanism for Trading Time-Sensitive Valued Data

Abstract:With the rapid growth of the applications in AI, the demand of data has increased significantly. To facilitate the circulation of data, numerous online data sharing and trading platforms (aka, data brokers) have emerged. In many situations the data value is time-sensitive, depending on the freshness of the data. Such a time-dependence can be characterized by a discount function $d(t)$ representing the data value fluctuation factor over the lifetime $t$. In this work, we propose a series of posted-price mechanisms to for data trading. By assuming the buyers' initial valuations follow a given distribution, we design two online posted-price mechanisms which are constant-competitive (approximately maximize the data seller's revenue), value truthful and (semi)-time truthful. We then extend our mechanisms to general value distributions. Finally, we propose an online learning mechanism to resolve the issue that we do not know the parameters of the distribution, and further explore the method of guaranteeing truthfulness. Our simulation results show that our mechanisms achieve more than 90% of the revenue over the offline baseline mechanism, and the competitive ratios converge to 1 as the number of buyers increases.

Abstract:Inspired from practices of Chinese real estate firms, we study dynamic capacity management problems for a firm that sells homogeneous goods over a finite or infinite selling horizon, provided that demand is uncertain, retail price is exogenous but changes according to an auto-regressive process, and there is holding cost for remaining inventory in each period. The capacity problems facing the firm include to determine an initial stock at the beginning of the selling season and to allocate the remaining quantity for the current and future sale in each period to maximize the firm׳s total expected discounted profit. By using Markov decision processes, we show the optimality of a so-called save-up-to level policy (i.e., it is optimal to allocate as much as the save-up-to level to future periods if possible in each period) and the existence of the optimal initial stock. Moreover, we characterize monotone properties of the optimal save-up-to level and the optimal initial stock. Numerical analysis shows that compared to the policy with zero save-up-to level (i.e., always allocating all the remaining inventory to the current period), the advantage of the policy proposed in the present paper is significant when price rising trend is large, holding cost is low, initial price is high, or demand variation is either high or low.
