Abstract:Phosphorus is an irreplaceable resource and an essential element in organisms. However, there are fewer studies focused on the uptake and transformation of different inorganic non-orthophosphates in microalgae. Therefore, the absorption, metabolism and storage of pyrophosphate and polyphosphate by C. pyrenoidosa were investigated in this study. It was found that both pyrophosphate and polyphosphate could be taken up and utilized by C. pyrenoidosa. The photosynthetic activity was limited by phosphorus deficiency, and cell morphology was affected at high concentration of inorganic phosphorus. Flow cytometric analysis inflected that polyphosphate was more likely to affect photosynthetic activity and pyrophosphate tended to increase the size of the cell. In addition, different inorganic phosphorus forms were found to affect the proportion of intracellular phosphorus composition by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This study would help understand the effects of different inorganic phosphorus forms on microalgae growth and utilization in mariculture wastewater.
