Abstract:Based on fast electric field waveforms of the Low‐frequency E‐field Detection Array (LFEDA), we introduce the time reversal technique into lightning three‐dimensional location for the first time and propose a new algorithm for the three‐dimensional location of lightning low‐frequency discharges. Without using complex filtering algorithms to remove higher‐frequency component, this method obtains similar results to the newly reported LFEDA refinement algorithm. The new algorithm can obtain finer, more continuous, and richer positioning results with a minimum of four stations, 5‐dB signal‐to‐noise ratio, and 500‐ns time error compared with the low‐frequency signal time of arrival three‐dimensional positioning method. These results indicate that the new algorithm has the advantages of low requirements on the number of stations, certain anti‐interference ability, and low requirements on time accuracy. The standard deviations in the X and Y directions for return strokes of triggered lightning flashes are both approximately 90 m.

Abstract:The existing acoustic localization algorithms based on time difference of arrival(TDOA) are computationally quite elaborate and are inaccurate to locate sound source.This work presented a new three-dimensional acoustic localization algorithm based on coordinate conversion.The algorithm calculates the sound source's coordinate in a new coordinate system converted from the original coordinate system in which four microphones have random coordinates.In the new coordinate system,three microphones have fixed freedom,while the last one's coordinate is random.After that,the actual position of the sound source can be quickly figured out.Comparison between the calculated results according to the algorithm with the results measured directly proves that the algorithm is efficient and practical.

Abstract:A time-delay of arrival collection system is built based on the four-microphone array.Real-time space 3D acoustic localization based on Monte Carlo algorithm is presented.It can quickly calculate the sound source position by using three time-delay of arrival to the microphone array.A 3D modular function is built based on the nonlinear function of acoustic lo- calization.The sound position can be localized quickly and accurately by seeking the global convergence and altering the step length according to the tolerance of accuracy.
Passive Localization Based on Spectral Estimation Methods Using Sources of Opportunity

Abstract:Passive localization methods based on Double-Correlation Function (DCF) can localize an unknown source by matching the signal-correlated structures extracted from correlation function of source signal received at two sensors, as the structures are dependent on the position of the source and the waveguide. It is similar to classical matched field processing, but differs in that data-based measured replicas are used instead of modeled replicas, and the signal-correlated structures are matched rather than acoustic field. This paper presents an extension of this method from time domain to frequency domain, by utilizing generalized cross-correlation spectral estimation methods to normalize the cross-correlation function. The analysis based on air experiment shows that the proposed algorithm has significant improvements against interference and on the estimation accuracy.

Abstract:The application of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) in the analysis and processing of lightning electric field waveforms acquired by the low-frequency e-field detection array (LFEDA) in China has significantly improved the capabilities of the low-frequency/very-low-frequency (LF/VLF) time-of-arrival technique for studying the lightning discharge processes. However, the inherent mode mixing and the endpoint effect of EMD lead to certain problems, such as an inadequate noise reduction capability, the incorrect matching of multistation waveforms, and the inaccurate extraction of pulse information, which limit the further development of the LFEDA's positioning ability. To solve these problems, the advanced ensemble EMD (EEMD) technique is introduced into the analysis of LF/VLF lightning measurements, and a double-sided bidirectional mirror (DBM) extension method is proposed to overcome the endpoint effect of EMD. EEMD can effectively suppress mode mixing, and the DBM extension method proposed in this article can effectively suppress the endpoint effect, thus greatly improving the accuracy of a simulated signal after a 25–500-kHz bandpass filter. The resulting DBM_EEMD algorithm can be used in the LFEDA system to process and analyze the detected electric field signals to improve the system's lightning location capabilities, especially in terms of accurate extraction and location of weak signals from lightning discharges. In this article, a 3-D image of artificially triggered lightning obtained from an LF/VLF location system is reported for the first time, and methods for further improving the location capabilities of the LF/VLF lightning detection systems are discussed.

A Fast Estimation Method for 3-D Acoustic Source Localization

Abstract:This paper discusses a type of 3-dimentional rapid sound source location method, which can be widely used in underwater or air environment, such as oil and gas exploration, fish characteristics research, remote conferencing and other fields. Delay-and-sum and Fast Direction of Arrival algorithm are discussed for narrowband signal processing. Sound source positioning only need to calculate and display the power intensity of each different angle of incidence, without the need to extract the specific incident signal, so we can directly apply FDOA algorithm. Since the center frequency of the sound signal is much lower than that of radio waves, laser and other signal carriers, the boundary conditions of the narrowband signal are often not satisfied in the actual workplace. Meanwhile, the system only needs the data characteristics of a certain frequency band in most applications. Therefore, this paper studies a fast beamforming and display method for specifying the frequency band and wave velocity, and verifies the validity of the relevant method with the delay-and-sum beamformer.

Abstract:For eliminating ambiguity of time difference of arrival (TDOA) in radar passive location system, especially with a high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF), a novel method based on frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) and FDOA-rate is proposed in this paper. By using FDOA and FDOA-rate parameters, the radar emitter's position can be roughly estimated in order to provide a direct calculation of TDOA solving its ambiguity. Furthermore, the location accuracy using FDOA and FDOA-rate is derived, and the constraint condition with no TDOA ambiguity is also presented. Simulations show that the proposed method can reduce the TDOA ambiguity effectively along with the extension of sampling time.

Abstract:The measurement accuracy of frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) is usually determinant for emitters location system using rapidly moving receivers. The classic technique of expanding the integration time of the cross ambiguity function (CAF) to achieve better performance of FDOA is likely to incur a significant computational burden especially for wideband signals. In this paper, a nonconsecutive short-time CAF's methods is proposed with expansion of root mean square (RMS) integration time, instead of the integration time, and a factor of estimation precision improvement is given which is relative to the general consecutive method. Furthermore, by analyzing the characteristic of coherent CAF and the influence of FDOA rate, an upper bound of the precision improvement factor is derived. Simulation results are provided to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:We investigate a localization problem using time-difference-of-arrival measurements with unknown and bounded measurement errors. Different from most existing algorithms, we consider the minimization of the worst-case position estimation error to improve the robustness of the algorithm. The localization problem is formulated as a nonconvex optimization problem. We adopt semidefinite relaxation to relax the original problem into a convex optimization problem, which can be solved using existing semidefinite program solvers. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm has lower worst-case position estimation error than other existing algorithms.

Abstract:Using a single three-component geophone to estimate the direction of arrival of a near sound source in the air is a challenging study. Through experimental data, we found that the azimuth angle obtained by using the polarization characteristics of the most energetic part of the signal is different from the true value. The research first analyzes the reasons for this phenomenon, and it is thought that the multipath effect of acoustic-seismic coupling may cause most signals to become interference, which makes it difficult to detect useful Rayleigh waves. Then we propose a method to detect Rayleigh waves by combining polarization characteristics and frequency domain peaks. The simulation and actual data shows that the method proposed in this study is still effective in estimating the azimuth of different sound sources in the air in a low signal-to-noise ratio environment. This study also has important implications for the application of long-distance acoustic-seismic coupling and hydroacoustics.

Abstract:We introduce the empirical mode decomposition algorithm and applied low‐frequency filtering and high‐frequency noise reduction to the waveform of the electric field changes recorded in 1‐ms segments. This algorithm greatly improved the accuracy of the peak time extraction and the number of pulses in the low and very low frequency band, which enhanced the accuracy in positioning the pulse of the electric field change. Compared with the previous algorithm, the algorithm can significantly reduce the time error, giving a better positioning result. With a time error estimate of 100 ns and a limit of goodness of fit less than 5, the number of pulse locations is increased by nearly 7 times. The goodness‐of‐fit distribution of the pulse location results had a normal distribution, and the 95% confidence interval of goodness of fit was 0–4; the corresponding positioning space error was <60 m. The continuity of the lightning channel was significantly improved, and the development characteristics and fine structure of the lightning channel were clearly distinguished. The low‐frequency electric field detection array system gave detailed positioning results for a bolt from the blue lightning strike. By comparing the results from the low‐frequency electric field detection array with the actual lightning strike point, we objectively demonstrated the positioning performance of the new algorithm. The system gave positioning results for the lightning for all seven return strokes. The maximum horizontal distance between the locating point and the real lightning strike point was 57 m, the minimum horizontal distance between them was 3 m, and the mean distance was 27 m.
3-Dimensional Localization Via RFID Tag Array

Abstract:In this paper, we propose 3DLoc, which performs 3-dimensional localization on the tagged objects by using the RFID tag arrays. 3DLoc deploys three arrays of RFID tags on three mutually orthogonal surfaces of each object. When performing 3D localization, 3DLoc continuously moves the RFID antenna and scans the tagged objects in a 2-dimensional space right in front of the tagged objects. It then estimates the object's 3D position according to the phases from the tag arrays. By referring to the fixed layout of the tag array, we use Angle of Arrival-based schemes to accurately estimate the tagged objects' orientation and 3D coordinates in the 3D space. To suppress the localization errors caused by the multipath effect, we use the linear relationship of the AoA parameters to remove the unexpected outliers from the estimated results. We have implemented a prototype system and evaluated the actual performance in the real complex environment. The experimental results show that 3DLoc achieves the mean accuracy of 10cm in free space and 15.3cm in the multipath environment for the tagged object.

Abstract:Time difference of arrival (TDOA) technology has been widely used in positioning and navigation system recently. This paper first introduces and analyzes the basic principle of acoustic source localization using time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurements. Time difference measurement is a key problem in TDOA location method for its accuracy directly determines the position estimation accuracy of the location system. Generalized cross-correlation (GCC) method can weaken the impact of noise on the delay estimation accuracy so this method is adopted in the paper to obtain TDOA measurement by detecting the peak position of the correlation function of two signals. Through the analysis of TDOA location algorithm, an improved Taylor algorithm with 10 iterations is proposed to solve the location coordinate of the acoustic source. This algorithm can achieve a higher accuracy with relatively smaller calculation. In order to forecast system performance, MATLAB simulations are realized for an acoustic source localization system using microphone array. Finally, the implementation of location system and actual test results are presented. In the actual environment, positioning errors are within 3 cm with microphone array element spacing of 50 cm and it is shown the implemented system can be applied to acoustic source localization.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3-D) localization algorithm for multiple near-field (NF) sources considering amplitude attenuation is proposed in this paper. Firstly, we use the symmetry of the array and the delay autocorrelation of NF signals to construct the virtual received data, whose phase factor is linear with the sensor position. By using the symmetry of amplitude attenuation of the virtual received data, a one-dimensional (1-D) peak search estimator is constructed to obtain the first angle parameter. Then, the estimated result is substituted into another spectral peak search function based on the original data to estimate the range parameter. Finally, a single-snapshot virtual received data set is generated, and the remaining angle parameter is solved by a phase retrieval operation. The proposed algorithm can automatically match the 3-D parameters, and has a stable estimation performance considering amplitude attenuation, as demonstrated by simulation results.

Abstract:In this article, a cumulant-based temporal–spatial localization algorithm for near-field (NF) sources is presented, which considers NF sources’ propagation attenuation, to estimate 3-D parameters, namely, azimuth, elevation, and radial range. The proposed method exploits the symmetry of the cross array to construct a special fourth-order cumulant (FOC) matrix by making use of the spatial and temporal information of the array measurements. Trilinear decomposition is performed to the “pseudosnapshots” data matrix, and the 2-D angle and range parameters can be extracted from the phase and amplitude attenuation information. The presented work can realize automatic pairing of 3-D parameters with closed-form expressions and no spectral search is needed. Simulation results show that the proposed method offers a satisfactory estimation performance with a low computational complexity.

Abstract:Due to the limitation of sampling frequency,it's difficult to improve the precision of passive acoustic localization algorithm based on traditional time delay estimation method.To solve this problem,a modified algo-rithm to estimate the location of sound source was presented based on FICP method.According to the acoustic transmission characteristics,the proposed algorithm could improve the fence effect caused by FFT and got high-er precision of time delay estimation by subdividing signal low-frequency spectrum.The target location positio-ning accuracy of the two algorithms were testified by theory simulation and simulated experiments based on five-element cross array system.It was showed that the algorithm could orientate target effectively,and the location accuracy was better than the passive location algorithm based on cross-correlation method.

Abstract:The equivalent propagation method adopts a variable propagation velocity in lightning location, minimizing the location error caused by various factors in the long-range lightning location network. To verify the feasibility of this method, we establish a long-range lightning location network in China. A new method is used to extract the ground wave peak points of the lightning sferics and is combined with the equivalent propagation velocity method for lightning location. By comparing with the lightning data detected by the lightning locating system called advanced direction and time-of-arrival detecting (ADTD) that has been widely used for tens of years in China, the feasibility of this method is initially verified. Additionally, it is found that the relative detection efficiency of our long-range lightning location network can reach 53%, the average location error is 9.17 km, and the detection range can reach more than 3000 km. The equivalent propagation method can improve the average location accuracy by ~1.16 km, compared with the assumed light speed of lightning-radiated sferic from the lightning stroke point to the observation station. The 50th percentile of the equal propagation velocity is 0.998c, which may be used in the long-range lightning location networks.

Abstract:We investigate an algorithm for 3D time-domain airborne electromagnetic (AEM) inversion based on the finite-volume (FV) method and direct Gauss-Newton optimization, where we obtain high efficiency by constraining the modeling volume to the AEM volume of influence (VOI) of a 3D source within the earth, rather than using the larger VOI of the AEM system. A half-space or layered earth is used to model the background field in the time domain, taking into account the transmitter waveform through convolution. Assuming that the 3D source of any secondary field detected at a survey point lies within the moving VOI of the airborne system, we conduct time-domain forward modeling and Jacobian calculation using an FV method within the 3D source VOI that requires a small number of cells for discretization. A local mesh and direct solver are shown to further speed up the computation. A synthetic isolated synclinal conductor inversion shows good agreement with the model geometry and provides a good fit to the data contaminated with noise. A synthetic multiple-body model inversion was also quite successful, showing that our algorithm is effective and about four times faster than inversion using the total-field method. Finally, we inverted GEOTEM data over the Lisheen deposit, where our inversion result was consistent with the published geology.

Abstract:In this study, three-dimensional source localization is investigated based on time delays between the direct (D) and surface-reflected (SR) paths measured using asynchronous distributed sensors in the deep-water reliable-acoustic-path environment. Instead of matching replicas, we develop computationally efficient formulas to locate the source. The formulas are derived by first pseudolinearizing the measurement model of the D–SR time delay and then solving the obtained pseudolinear system of equations using the instrumental variable technique. Furthermore, the Cramér–Rao lower bound of the investigated problem is derived theoretically. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed formulas. The results show that the formulas can provide a localization accuracy comparable to that of the matching algorithm when the measurement noise level is low, while exhibiting an acceptable inferiority at high noise levels. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed formulas is verified using experimental data acquired in the western Pacific. In all experimental test groups, the localization biases of the proposed formulas do not exceed 250 m in the horizontal plane and are less than 5% for depth estimation.

Abstract:Time difference of arrival (TDoA) based on a group of sensor nodes with known locations has been widely used to locate targets. Two-step weighted least squares (TSWLS), constrained weighted least squares (CWLS), and Newton–Raphson (NR) iteration are commonly used passive location methods, among which the initial position is needed and the complexity is high. This paper proposes a hybrid firefly algorithm (hybrid-FA) method, combining the weighted least squares (WLS) algorithm and FA, which can reduce computation as well as achieve high accuracy. The WLS algorithm is performed first, the result of which is used to restrict the search region for the FA method. Simulations showed that the hybrid-FA method required far fewer iterations than the FA method alone to achieve the same accuracy. Additionally, two experiments were conducted to compare the results of hybrid-FA with other methods. The findings indicated that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean distance error of the hybrid-FA method were lower than that of the NR, TSWLS, and genetic algorithm (GA). On the whole, the hybrid-FA outperformed the NR, TSWLS, and GA for TDoA measurement.
