Abstract:Rapid urbanization in China in the past several decades has been shown to affect surface air temperature (SAT) locally, but its global impact is unclear. Using a global climate model, we have investigated the potential impact of urbanization in China on SAT at the global scale. The expansion of urban areas in China from 1985 to 2017 leads to winter surface air warming by as much as 0.8 degrees C in North America (NA), largely caused by warm temperature advection due to global-scale atmospheric circulation changes. The East Asian jet stream moves northward in eastern and northeastern China where the expansion of urban areas has increased SAT and sensible heat flux, forcing change of the atmospheric stationary waves and so the structure of the jet streams.
Changes in the Impact of the Autumn Tibetan Plateau Snow Cover on the Winter Temperature over North America in the Mid‐1990s

Abstract:This study investigates the changes in the impact of the interannual variation of autumn snow cover over the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP; ASCETP) on winter surface air temperature (SAT) over North America (NA) in the mid-1990s using both observational data and a linear baroclinic numerical model. The index of ASCETP shows an abrupt change with a predominant negative phase before and a predominant positive phase after 1994; thus, the analysis is performed for two subperiods: 1979-1994 (P1) and 1995-2014 (P2). An ASCETP-related energy budget analysis shows that the ASCETP variation has a more pronounced cooling effect on the above atmosphere in P1 than in P2. The snow-related anomalous negative geopotential height above the TP is more pronounced and extends farther northeastward in P1 than in P2. Further analysis shows that the relationship between the ASCETP and NA winter SAT is not steady. During P1, associated with an anomalous positive ASCETP, negative geopotential height anomalies emerge over the northeastern TP. These negative anomalies impose an anomalous vorticity perturbation near the East Asian westerly jet core that propagates eastward, forming a wave train-like pattern. It crosses the North Pacific Ocean and reaches the NA region, leading to positive and negative winter SAT anomalies over western and eastern NA, respectively. In contrast, during P2, the impact of anomalous ASCETP on the variation in the winter SAT over NA is weak, probably due to the relatively weak local cooling effect of the ASCETP and the weak ASCETP-related vorticity forcing around the East Asian westerly jet.

Abstract:Although seasonal snow is recognized as an important component in the global climate system, the ability of snow to affect plant production remains an important unknown for assessing climate change impacts on vegetation dynamics at high-latitude ecosystems. Here, we compile data on satellite observation of vegetation greenness and spring onset date, satellite-based soil moisture, passive microwave snow water equivalent (SWE) and climate data to show that winter SWE can significantly influence vegetation greenness during the early growing season (the period between spring onset date and peak photosynthesis timing) over nearly one-fifth of the land surface in the region north of 30 degrees, but the magnitude and sign of correlation exhibits large spatial heterogeneity. We then apply an assembled path model to disentangle the two main processes (via changing early growing-season soil moisture, and via changing the growth period) in controlling the impact of winter SWE on vegetation greenness, and suggest that the moisture and growth period effect, to a larger extent, result in positive and negative snow-productivity associations, respectively. The magnitude and sign of snow-productivity association is then dependent upon the relative dominance of these two processes, with the moisture effect and positive association predominating in Central, western North America and Greater Himalaya, and the growth period effect and negative association in Central Europe. We also indicate that current state-of-the-art models in general reproduce satellite-based snow-productivity relationship in the region north of 30 degrees, and do a relatively better job of capturing the moisture effect than the growth period effect. Our results therefore work towards an improved understanding of winter snow impact on vegetation greenness in northern ecosystems, and provide a mechanistic basis for more realistic terrestrial carbon cycle models that consider the impacts of winter snow processes.
Influence of Wintertime Surface Sensible Heat Flux Variability over the Central and Eastern Tibetan Plateau on the East Asian Winter Monsoon

Abstract:Analyses of in situ and reanalysis output are performed to examine linkages between surface sensible heat fluxes over the central and eastern Tibetan Plateau (CETP) and indices of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and wintertime near-surface air temperatures over China. The results demonstrate that the sensible heat fluxes over CETP exhibit substantial decadal variability with positive, negative and positive phase during 1980–1987, 1988–2002 and 2003–2014, respectively. This decadal variability exhibits statistically significant associations with sub-components of EAWM and surface temperature anomalies over eastern China. The recovery of decadal change in wintertime sensible heat fluxes from negative to positive phase over CETP over the past decade (since 2003) has been associated with intensification and northward displacement of the East Asian subtropical jet (EASJ), enhanced and westward displacement of East Asian trough and strengthening of the Siberian High. Such processes are associated with the strengthening of EAWM, as well as cold air advection from high latitudes towards the south. Increased wintertime sensible heat fluxes over CETP is associated with markedly changes in the meridional temperature gradient that in term intensifies upper-level zone flow in the EASJ region, which provides a key physical factor linking the anomalies of sensible heat fluxes and EAWM.

Abstract:Abstract This study focuses on the interannual variability of winter mean surface air temperature (SAT) and subseasonal SAT reversal in North China, which have profound impacts on national life and economic activities. The analysis explores the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of these variations and their relationship with the Eurasian Zonal Circulation (EZ). The findings reveal distinct interdecadal changes in North China’s winter mean SAT, along with a general subseasonal reversal of cold and warm conditions. In comparison to the North Atlantic oscillation/Arctic Oscillation, the EZ has a more significant influence on the interannual variability of winter and subseasonal reversals. Strong EZ years are associated with the weakening of the Siberian High and the Ural Blocking High, causing the East Asian Trough to move eastward, which leads to the retention of cold air from the north and increased SAT in North China. Conversely, weak EZ years exhibit opposite circulation patterns. The winter mean EZ is influenced by preceding autumn Arctic sea ice concentrations (SIC). Reduced autumn SIC results in decreased heat flux and reduced eddy energy, leading to substantial attenuation of the winter storm track across Scandinavia and Western Asia. This attenuation, mediated through the interaction between eddies and mean flow, triggers a slowdown of Eurasian zonal circulation and intensification of the Siberian High. These conditions favor a positive phase of the winter Scandinavia pattern, facilitating the transport of cold Arctic air into North China. Likewise, subseasonal reversals in SIC influence corresponding alterations in the EZ.

Abstract:<p>The meteorological conditions in northeast China exhibit particular characteristics associated with snow cover in winter and dramatic land cover transformations. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) is used to assess the influences of snow albedo and land cover changes on wind speed, temperature, relative humidity, and planetary boundary layer height (PBLH). Two new static geographical datasets, a maximum snow albedo dataset (MSA) developed by Beijing Normal University (BNU_MSA) and a land cover dataset developed by Tsinghua University (TU_LC), are employed for updating previous datasets in WRF. Besides, a case study for local anthropogenic heat (AH) parameters is conducted to examine its influences on temperature in winter. Modeled scenarios for 13 December 2017 to 15 January 2018 show that TU_LC yields a lower mean absolute error of 0.55 m/s for simulated wind speed, suggesting the usefulness of the TU_LC in modeled 10-m wind speed. The change in the wind speed is closely related to land cover transformations occurring over urban and forest regions. The spatially varying temperature agrees well with changes in the MSA. Simulation with updated AH parameters induces higher temperature over downtown Harbin and Changchun. Increasing PBLH is observed as compared with that using default datasets because of increasing temperature and heat fluxes induced by the decreases in MSA. The maximum differences of the wind speed and temperature between updated and default datasets in the verticle direction are confined within 600-m height above the ground surface.</p>

Abstract:We present a comprehensive analysis diagnosing the primary factors driving the observed changes in major atmospheric teleconnection patterns in the Northern Hemisphere winter, including the Pacific North American pattern (PNA), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and North American winter dipole (NAWD), with particular focus on their roles in shaping anomalous weather across North America. Our investigation reveals a consistent influence of the NAWD over seven decades, contrasting with fluctuating impacts from PNA and minor impacts from NAO. In particular, an emergent negative correlation between the NAWD and PNA, signaling a shifted phase of teleconnection patterns, is identified. Such a relationship change is traced to enhanced upper-level ridges across western North America, reflecting a reinforced winter stationary wave. Through attribution analysis, we identify greenhouse gas emissions as a probable driver for the northward drift of the Asia-Pacific jet core, which, aided by orographic lifting over the Alaskan Range, subsequently amplifies the winter stationary wave across western North America. This work emphasizes the pronounced effect of human-induced global warming on the structure and teleconnection of large-scale atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere winter, providing vital perspectives on the dynamics of current climate trends.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding the physical and dynamical origin of regional climate extremes remains a major challenge in our effort to anticipate the occurrences and mitigate the adverse impacts of these extremes. China was hit by a record-breaking hot winter in 2016/17 with remarkable surface warming over the northern and southeastern regions. Here we made a quantitative attribution of this 2016/17 winter’s surface temperature anomalies utilizing an updated version of the coupled atmosphere-surface climate feedback response analysis method (CFRAM), that recently incorporates the effect of aerosols and more species of trace gases (CFRAM-A). The CFRAM-A analysis reveals that the overall warming pattern may be largely attributed to the effects of anomalous water vapor, atmospheric dynamics, and aerosols, followed by anomalies of surface albedo, clouds, solar irradiance, ozone, and carbon dioxide. The effect of methane turns out to be negligible. Anomalies in surface dynamics provides an overall cooling effect, compensating the warming associated with other processes to some extent. Among the three major positive contributors, effects of water vapor and atmospheric dynamics prevail over both northern and southeastern China while the impact of anthropogenic aerosols appears much more pronounced over southeastern China, likely due to the implementation of highly effective emission reduction policies in China since 2013. The CFRAM-A thus provides an efficient, model-free approach for quantitatively understanding sources of regional temperature extremes and for assessing the impacts of environmental policies regulating anthropogenic emissions of aerosols and atmospheric trace gases.

Abstract:The default fractional vegetation cover and terrain height were replaced by the estimated fractional vegetation cover, which was calculated by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of Earth Observing System Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (EOS-MODIS) and the Digital Elevation Model of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) system. The near-surface meteorological elements over northeastern China were assimilated into the three-dimensional variational data assimilation system (3DVar) module in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The structure and daily variations of air temperature, humidity, wind and energy fields over northeastern China were simulated using the WRF model. Four groups of numerical experiments were performed, and the simulation results were analyzed of latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, and their relationships with changes in the surface energy flux due to soil moisture and precipitation over different surfaces. The simulations were compared with observations of the stations Tongyu, Naiman, Jinzhou, and Miyun from June to August, 2009. The results showed that the WRF model achieves high-quality simulations of the diurnal characteristics of the surface layer temperature, wind direction, net radiation, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux over semiarid northeastern China in the summer. The simulated near-surface temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed were improved in the data assimilation case (Case 2) compared with control case (Case 1). The simulated sensible heat fluxes and surface heat fluxes were improved by the land surface parameterization case (Case 3) and the combined case (Case 4). The simulated temporal variations in soil moisture over the northeastern arid areas agree well with observations in Case 4, but the simulated precipitation should be improved in the WRF model. This study could improve the land surface parameters by utilizing remote sensing data and could further improve atmospheric elements with a data assimilation system. This work provides an effective attempt at combining multi-source data with different spatial and temporal scales into numerical simulations. The assimilation datasets generated by this work can be applied to research on climate change and environmental monitoring of arid lands, as well as research on the formation and stability of climate over semiarid areas.

Land surface processes response to warming and wetting trend in Northwest China

Abstract:The climate in Northwest China (NWC) has undergone a warming and wetting trend (WWT) since the 1980s, which has attracted considerable attention from the scientific and policy communities. However, the majority of previous studies have focused on overall effects of WWT, and very few have examined how land surface system responds to climate warming or wetting trend, respectively. For this purpose, this study uses the Community Land Model (CLM5) driven by the Chinese Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD) to conduct four modelling experiments: a control experiment (CTRL) and three sensitivity experiments, in which the annual trend of air temperature (NonWarm), precipitation (NonWet), and both (NonWWT) are removed from the CMFD from 1979 to 2018. Compared to CTRL, the land hydrological variables (i.e., soil moisture, runoff and evapotranspiration) show a visible reduction in magnitude, interannual variability, as well as annual trend in NonWet, while they are enhanced in NonWarm. In both NonWarm and NonWet, the magnitude and trend of both net radiation and sensible heat fluxes increase, with a more pronounced change in NonWWT. Further analysis indicates that the land surface processes are more sensitive to wetting trend than to warming trend. Among all land surface hydrological variables and energy variables, runoff and snow cover fraction are the most susceptible to climate change. Overall, the effects of climate change in Ta and Pr on surface hydrological variables are non-linearly offsetting, while the effects on surface energy budgets are non-linearly superimposed. Compared to warming trend, wetting trend plays a larger impact in the variability of land surface processes in NWC.

Interannual Variability of the Wintertime Asian-Bering-North American Teleconnection Linked to Eurasian Snow Cover and Maritime Continent Sea Surface Temperature

Abstract:Recent studies propose that the Asian-Bering-North American (ABNA) teleconnection is a distinct atmo-spheric pattern that is related to Eurasian and North American winter climate besides the Pacific-North America (PNA) pattern, while its origin remains elusive. This study investigates the interannual variability of the ABNA during the past 42 winters (1979-2020) and the associated prior surface boundary forcings. The ABNA explains coherent surface air tempera-ture changes in northern Asia, eastern Siberia-Alaska, and eastern North America, even after removing the impacts of the PNA, the Arctic Oscillation, the North Atlantic Oscillation, and the North Pacific Oscillation. Surface boundary conditions linked to the ABNA could be traced back to a Eurasian snow cover dipole pattern (ESCDP) and a Maritime Continent sea surface temperature anomaly (MCSST) in November. The ESCDP leads to a displacement of the Arctic stratospheric polar vortex via troposphere-stratosphere coupling. The anomalous polar vortex propagates downward in the following winter and generates the tropospheric ABNA pattern. The MCSST induces a diabatic heating anomaly, which is associated with a tropical western Pacific precipitation anomaly (TWPP) in winter. The TWPP excites a poleward Rossby wave train that propagates across the North Pacific and directly strengthens the ABNA. The above physical processes can be well re-produced by a linear baroclinic model (LBM). Based on the ESCDP and MCSST predictors, an empirical model is estab-lished and shows a promising prediction skill of the ABNA during the hindcast period. This can provide a useful strategy for seasonal prediction of winter climate in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Extreme cold events have influenced both Asian and North American continents during the past decades, causing huge socioeconomic impacts. The Asian-Bering-North American teleconnection is found to be responsible for coherent changes of winter climate in these two continents besides the Pacific-North America pattern. Our results indicate that Eurasian snow cover and the Maritime Continent sea surface tempera-ture are important sources of predictability for the Asian-Bering-North American teleconnection, and can be used to predict coherent and cross-continent variations of winter surface air temperature. We propose that the Asian-Bering- North American teleconnection and these two predictors should be included in operational monitoring and prediction systems, helping to improve the prediction skill of winter climate in the Northern Hemisphere continents.

Contribution of Tibetan Plateau Snow Cover to the Extreme Winter Conditions of 2009/10

Abstract:Most of the northern hemisphere experienced extreme climate conditions during winter 2009/10. This winter in Canada was characterized by the warmest and driest conditions in the past 60 years. Across much of the United States, Europe and northern Asia, persistent below-normal temperatures caused a significant adverse economic and societal impact. Dynamical seasonal forecasting systems failed to predict this winter's extreme conditions. Here we show that the snow-cover anomaly over the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas is significantly correlated with the atmospheric circulation pattern that contributes to these anomalous winter conditions. A statistical model using this snow-cover information and the El Nino signal in autumn 2009 was able to predict the general distribution of the anomalous conditions for this winter. This implies that an improved understanding of the Tibetan Plateau snow-cover effect and its representation in general circulation models are important for seasonal predictions, particularly of high-impact climate events.
Urbanization and Heterogeneous Surface Warming in Eastern China

Abstract:With the homogeneity-adjusted surface air temperature (SAT) data at 312 stations in eastern China for 1979-2008 and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) nighttime light data, the spatial heterogeneities of the SAT trends on different scales are detected with a spatial filtering (i.e. moving spatial anomaly) method, and the impact of urbanization in eastern China on surface warming is analyzed. Results show that the urbanization can induce a remarkable summer warming in Yangtze River Delta (YRD) city cluster region and a winter warming in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) city cluster region. The YRD warming in summer primarily results from the significant increasing of maximum temperature, with an estimated urban warming rate at 0.132–0.250°C per decade, accounting for 36%–68% of the total regional warming. The BTH warming in winter is primarily due to the remarkable increasing of minimum temperature, with an estimated urban warming rate at 0.102–0.214°C per decade, accounting for 12%–24% of the total regional warming. The temporal-spatial differences of urban warming effect may be attributed to the variation of regional climatic background and the change of anthropogenic heat release.
Impacts of Autumn-Winter Central Asian Snow Cover on the Interannual Variation in Northeast Asian Winter Precipitation

Abstract:The current work investigated the impact of the interannual variation in the autumn-winter snow cover extent (SCE) over the extratropical Eurasian continent on Northeast Asian winter precipitation (NAWP) using observational data from 1972 to 2019. The leading singular value decomposition (SVD) mode of the interannual variation in the NAWP is significantly related to autumn SCE anomalies over Central Asia (SCE_CA), with decreased autumn SCE_CA corresponding to increased NAWP. The possible mechanisms responsible for this autumn SCE_CA-NAWP relationship are examined. The analytical results show that the reduced autumn SCE_CA has a significant warming effect on the overlying atmosphere and induces an anomalous anticyclone over CA. This anticyclonic response cooperates with the North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomaly (SST)-generated atmospheric wave pattern, promoting a further eastward extension of the wave pattern to the downstream regions of the Eurasian continent. The anomalous autumn SCE_CA can persist to the following winter, and its related atmospheric wave train is maintained and further strengthened by the increased winter SCE over North China (SCE_NC). In winter, the atmospheric circulation features a pronounced low-pressure system over Northeast Asia and a high-pressure system over the western North Pacific sector. The anomalous southeasterly winds between these two systems transport water vapor from the lower-latitude Pacific Ocean to the interior of the continent, accounting for more NAWP. A composite analysis further indicates that this autumn SCE_CA-NAWP relationship is primarily independent of the North Atlantic SSTs.

Abstract:Studying the spatiotemporal changes of the northern limit of winter wheat (NLWW) in China is important to ensure regional food security and deal with the effects of climate change. Previous studies mainly used climate indicators to analyze the variation of the potential NLWW in different historical periods, while little attention has been paid to the actual migrations and changes of the NLWW. The objectives of the present study were three-fold: (i) to map the spatial distribution of winter wheat in northern China in 2001, 2007, 2014 and 2019; (ii) to extract the actual NLWW; and (iii) to quantitatively explore the dynamics of the NLWW. First, we adopted the “combining variations before and after estimated heading dates” method to map the winter wheat in northern China based on time series MODIS EVI2 data. Second, we used the kernel density estimation algorithm to extract the actual NLWW in four historical periods. Finally, the fishnet method was utilized to quantitatively analyze the direction and distance of the spatiotemporal changes of the NLWW. The results demonstrated that the NLWW has exhibited a marked fluctuating trend of migration southward, with a 37-km shift in latitude over the past 20 years. The elevation limit of winter wheat planting was around 1600 m; however, the centroid of winter wheat planting has shifted slowly to lower elevations. There was a gap between the actual NLWW and the potential NLWW. The reason for this gap was that the actual NLWW moved southward under the interacting effects of human activities and climate change, while the potential NLWW moved northward due to climate change. The results of this study are of great scientific value in the formulation of winter wheat planting strategies in climate-sensitive areas to respond to climate change and ensure food security.
